The Gulfstream G650 is capable of traveling 7,000 nautical miles/12,964 kilometers at Mach 0.85 or 6,000 nm/11,112 km at Mach 0.90. Powered by two Rolls-Royce BR725 engines, the G650 has a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.925 and can climb to a maximum altitude of 51,000 feet/15,545 meters, allowing it to avoid airline-traffic congestion and adverse weather.
The cabin on the G650 includes a number of technologically advanced systems, including the Gulfstream-designed Cabin Management System, which allows passengers to use personal electronic devices to control high-definition audio and video components as well as lighting, temperature, window shades and other cabin functions. The cabin also features 100 percent fresh air, the lowest cabin altitude in its class and 16 Gulfstream signature large oval windows.
Gulfstream announced the G650 on March 13, 2008. In front of more than 7,000 employees, customers and suppliers, the aircraft rolled out under its own power on Sept. 29, 2009, and took its first flight nearly two months later, on Nov. 25, 2009. The aircraft received its type certificate from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Sept. 7, 2012, and from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) on Dec. 21, 2012. The first G650 was delivered on Dec. 20, 2012. In 2015, the G650 was awarded the 2014 Robert J. Collier Trophy, the most prestigious award in aviation in North America, in recognition of the aircraft’s “significant technological advancements in aircraft performance, cabin comfort and safety.”

The cabin on the G650 includes a number of technologically advanced systems, including the Gulfstream-designed Cabin Management System, which allows passengers to use personal electronic devices to control high-definition audio and video components as well as lighting, temperature, window shades and other cabin functions. The cabin also features 100 percent fresh air, the lowest cabin altitude in its class and 16 Gulfstream signature large oval windows.
Gulfstream announced the G650 on March 13, 2008. In front of more than 7,000 employees, customers and suppliers, the aircraft rolled out under its own power on Sept. 29, 2009, and took its first flight nearly two months later, on Nov. 25, 2009. The aircraft received its type certificate from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Sept. 7, 2012, and from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) on Dec. 21, 2012. The first G650 was delivered on Dec. 20, 2012. In 2015, the G650 was awarded the 2014 Robert J. Collier Trophy, the most prestigious award in aviation in North America, in recognition of the aircraft’s “significant technological advancements in aircraft performance, cabin comfort and safety.”

On September 29th, 2009, Gulfstream Aerospace premiered its new flagship business jet at the company headquarters in Savannah, Georgia. Over 7,000 people gathered to watch the debut including local dignitaries, Mayor Otis Johnson and Commissioner Pete Liakakis, General Dynamics CEO Jay Johnson, and representatives of the G650 development team.
The G650 marks an innovative improvement in the Gulfstream family as the longest range, fastest speed, largest cabin aircraft in the fleet. The G650 is capable of traveling 7,000 nautical miles at 0.85 Mach, with a maximum operating speed of 0.925, making it the fastest civil aircraft available in the world. The Rolls Royce BR725 engines allow the aircraft to climb to an altitude of 51,000 feet, avoiding both heavy traffic and poor weather conditions.
The all-new fuselage cross section will provide a wider, taller cabin than previous models; the cabin measures 102 inches wide and 77 inches high making it the largest cabin available in business aviation. Featuring EssentialTM systems, the cabin will include fiber optic and wireless technologies. In addition, the aircraft is equipped with the most technologically advanced flight deck, the PlaneViewTM II cockpit.
First announced on March 13, 2008, the G650 is on schedule for first flight later this year. Service entry is on track for first customer deliveries for 2012.

Probable Cause
The NTSB determines that the probable cause of this accident was the flight crewmembers’ failure to perform the flight control check before takeoff, their attempt to take off with the gust lock system engaged, and their delayed execution of a rejected takeoff after they became aware that the controls were locked. Contributing to the accident were the flight crew’s habitual noncompliance with checklists, Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation’s failure to ensure that the G-IV gust lock/throttle lever interlock system would prevent an attempted takeoff with the gust lock engaged, and the Federal Aviation Administration’s failure to detect this inadequacy during the G-IV’s certification.
Recommendations
As a result of this investigation, the NTSB makes safety recommendations to the FAA, the International Business Aviation Council, and the National Business Aviation Association:
To the Federal Aviation Administration:
1. Identify nonfrangible structures outside of a runway safety area during annual 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 139 inspections and place increased emphasis on replacing nonfrangible fittings of any objects along the extended runway centerline up to the perimeter fence with frangible fittings, wherever feasible, during the next routine maintenance cycle.
2. After Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation develops a modification of the G-IV gust lock/throttle lever interlock, require that the gust lock system on all existing G-IV airplanes be retrofitted to comply with the certification requirement that the gust lock physically limit the operation of the airplane so that the pilot receives an unmistakable warning at the start of takeoff.
3. Develop and issue guidance on the appropriate use and limitations of the review of engineering drawings in a design review performed as a means of showing compliance with certification regulations.
Findings
1. The flight crew was qualified to operate the airplane, and the use of alcohol or drugs, fatigue, and medical conditions were not factors in the flight crew’s performance.
2. The flight crew failed to disengage the gust lock system as called for in the Starting Engines checklist and failed to conduct a flight control check as called for in the After Starting Engines checklist, during which the crewmembers would have detected that the gust lock system was engaged.
3. Given that the flight crew neglected to perform complete flight control checks before 98% of the crewmembers’ previous 175 takeoffs in the airplane, the flight crew’s omission of a flight control check before the accident takeoff indicates intentional, habitual noncompliance with standard operating procedures.
4. About the time that the airplane reached a speed of 150 knots, one of the pilots activated the flight power shutoff valve, likely in an attempt to unlock the flight controls, but this action
was ineffective because high aerodynamic loads on the elevator were likely impeding gust lock hook release.
5. The flight crew delayed initiating a rejected takeoff until the accident was unavoidable; this delay likely resulted from surprise, the unsuccessful attempt to resolve the problem through use of the flight power shutoff valve, and ineffective communication.
6. The flight crewmembers’ lack of adherence to industry best practices involving the execution of normal checklists eliminated the opportunity for them to recognize that the gust lock handle was in the ON position and delayed their detection of this error.
7. Independent safety audits performed by an industry safety organization did not adequately encourage best practices for the execution of normal checklists.
8. An analysis of Corporate Flight Operational Quality Assurance Centerline data specifically evaluating the rate of noncompliance with flight control checks before takeoff could help define the scope of procedural noncompliance in business aviation and guide the development of strategies to address it. (SAVANNAH, GA) Tuesday, April 28, the second lecture in the 2015 Enmark Encourage Health Education Series, “Crossfit, Why and How It Works in Weight Loss,” will be presented by Drew McKenzie, owner and operator with Crossfit Hyperformance.
McKenzie was introduced to the crossfit methodology in 2006, and has been doing it every since. He holds a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science and is certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. McKenzie is an Adjunct Professor for Health Sciences at Armstrong University.
This Enmark Encourage Health presentation will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Auditorium of the Savannah Morning News, located at 1375 Chatham Parkway in Savannah. A healthy lunch will be provided by local business sponsors. Attendance is free and open to the public, but RSVPs are required at Healthy Savannah’s website, http://healthysavannah.org/event-signup-form-crossfit/.
GA Bikes! has been selected as the nonprofit organization to be awarded the $2,000 Encourage Health grant during the lecture. GA Bikes! is a Savannah-based nonprofit organization working to promote bicycling for fitness, fun, and transportation. The group strives to help improve bicycling conditions throughout Georgia.
GA Bikes! will also be raising funds on Saturday, May 2 at the Enmark Station located at 7406 Waters Ave from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. During this “Enmark Dollar Day” there will be opportunities for GA Bikes! to receive $1 for every car wash, $1 at their charity table and $1 donations will be accepted at the Enmark cash registers.
Along with the Dollar Day, the four selected nonprofit organization chosen for the Encourage Health Grants are competing for a grand prize. The groups will be given a scannable bar code that can be used throughout the year with the Enmark mobile app to rack up points for the different nonprofit organizations. Washington, DC, May 8, 2015—Seventy years after Allied forces won the world’s freedom in Europe, 56 vintage World War II airplanes celebrated Victory in Europe Day in a tremendous display of airpower and history before a crowd of thousands gathered along the National Mall in Washington, DC.
The Arsenal of Democracy: World War II Victory Capitol Flyover included aircraft flying in 15 historically sequenced formations that represented the major battles of the war, starting with Pearl Harbor and ending with a missing man formation led by Congressman Sam Graves (R-MO) in a TBM Avenger, the same model of airplane former President George H.W. Bush flew when he was shot down overseas.
Under a nearly perfect sky, the event honored the men and women who flew and fought in the war, and those at home who manufactured the planes, ships, and tanks that allowed the Allies to secure victory. Among those in attendance for the historic flyover were more than 400 veterans of World War II, drawn to both the commemoration of VE Day and the unprecedented display of vintage military aircraft. For many, it was the first time they had seen these types of airplanes since they saw them over the skies of Europe and the Pacific more than seven decades ago.
The planes flew at 1,000 feet, making them easily visible to onlookers from the ground. A live webcast provided narration about the planes and their role in the battles to Americans across the country. All of the airplanes returned successfully to either Manassas or Culpeper Regional Airport except for one that made a precautionary landing at Reagan National Airport.
The Flyover was months in the planning, with many Federal government agencies providing key support. They included the Federal Aviation Administration, the Transportation Security Administration, the National Park Service, the U.S. Capitol Police, and the U.S. Secret Service.
“We are thrilled that today’s flights went extremely well and, most importantly, safely,” said the Arsenal of Democracy Flyover Executive Committee, which includes Stephan C. Brown, President and CEO of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF); Pete Bunce, President and CEO of theGeneral Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA); John Cudahy, President of the International Council of Air Shows (ICAS); Paul Rinaldi, President of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA); and Doug Rozendaal of the Texas Flying Legends Museum.
“The owners, pilots, and crew of these aircraft demonstrated an extremely high level of professionalism at every instance, and we thank them, our government partners, our Honorary Co-Chairs, our Honorary Congressional Committee, and especially our sponsors for making today’s event possible. Everyone worked together with the one goal of honoring our nation’s heroes. We hope this unforgettable experience was as meaningful to them as it has been for us.”

What a cool week! You really have to admire a company that says what they're going to do and then follows through. That's exactly what happened with Eclipse Aerospace, as Mason Holland took the stage during the first International Eclipse Dealer and Sales Conference held this past Friday in Albuquerque and announced the official launch of initial production of the new model Eclipse 550 twin-engine jet. It's rare that we get a news release from a company concerning an Airworthiness Directive (AD), but the folks at WACO (WALK-o) thought it was important to note that they are taking seriously an AD for Great Lakes airplanes built before they held the type certificate. The solar-powered Solar Impulse airplane completed a trip from Switzerland to Morocco across the Strait of Gibraltar this week. We have ALL this and SO MUCH MORE in this week's edition of AIRBORNE!

A survivor of the Auschwitz death camp is now the world's oldest man, the Guinness World Records organisation says. Yisrael Kristal was born near Zarnow in Poland in 1903 and lived through two world wars before moving to the Israeli city of Haifa.
