Israel buried former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon at his family farm
on Monday, celebrating the military achievements of a man seen as a war
hero at home but as a war criminal by many in the Arab world.
Eulogised first in a ceremony in Jerusalem, and later in the green fields of his
southern estate, a stream of speakers hailed a life entwined with that of his country, while gently alluding to the controversies that also defined his career.
Sharon, 85, died on Saturday after spending the last eight years of his life
motionless in a hospital bed, pitched into a coma by a stroke and far from

Famous quotes by Ariel Sharon:
"my mood altered and the pain turned to rage."
"Even today I am willing to volunteer to do the dirty work for Israel, to kill as many Arabs as necessary, to deport them, to expel and burn them, to have everyone hate us, to pull the rug from underneath the feet of the Diaspora Jews, so that they will be forced to run to us crying. Even if it means blowing up one or two synagogues here and there, I don't care."
"In principle, I'm sorry that we didn't liquidate him"
"Everybody has to move; run and grab as many hilltops as they can to enlarge the settlements, because everything we take now will stay ours. Everything we don't grab will go to them."
"I am for lasting peace... United, I believe, we can win the battle for peace. But it must be a different peace, one with full recognition of the rights of the Jews in their one and only land: peace with security for generations and peace with a united Jerusalem as the eternal, undivided capital of the Jewish people in the state of Israel forever."
"As one who fought in all of Israel's wars, and learned from personal experience that without proper force, we do not have a chance of surviving in this region, which does not show mercy towards the weak, I have also learned from experience that the sword alone cannot decide this bitter dispute in this land."
"There is no bullet-proof vest in my size."
"I vow that if I was just an Israeli civilian and I met a Palestinian I would burn him and I would make him suffer before killing him."
"A lie should be tried in a place where it will attract the attention of the world."
"Israel may have the right to put others on trial, but certainly no one has the right to put the Jewish people and the State of Israel on trial."
"As long as I'm needed. I'll be ready to serve. I look forward with optimism. We need the Jews here. Move to Israel! Move to Israel!"
"I don't think I have accomplished what I still have to accomplish. There is one thing that I would like to do, and that's to bring security and peace to the Jewish people."
"We are together with the British and Americans because one should fight terror. But we are not going to pay the price for it by endangering Israel and its citizens."
"We have no desire to permanently rule over millions of Palestinians, who double their numbers every generation. Israel, which wishes to be an exemplary democracy, will not be able to bear such a reality over time. The Disengagement Plan presents the possibility of opening a gate to a different reality."
"We extend our hand towards peace. Our people are committed to peace. We know that peace entails painful compromise for both sides."
"Peace should provide security. It should be durable. I'm ready to go far in making painful concessions. But there is one thing I will never make any concessions on and that's the security of the Israeli citizens and the very existence of the state of Israel. The Palestinians are losing time."
"To the citizens of Israel, I say: we have passed difficult years, faced the most painful experiences and overcame them. The future lies before us. We are required to take difficult and controversial steps, but we must not miss the opportunity to try to achieve what we have wished for, for so many years: security, tranquillity and peace."
"We have evidence that Iran makes a reactor to possess nuclear weapons."
"On April 19 1943, the Bermuda conference gathered, with the participation of representatives from Britain and the United States, in order to discuss saving the Jews of Europe. In fact, the participants did everything in their power to avoid dealing with the problem."
"Israel has many hopes, and faces extreme dangers. The most prominent danger is Iran, which is making every effort to acquire nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles, and establishing an enormous terror network together with Syria in Lebanon."

Sharon, 85, died on Saturday after spending the last eight years of his life
motionless in a hospital bed, pitched into a coma by a stroke and far from
the public gaze.

Netanyahu’s moment When politics and media coverage go nuclear
You can’t argue with Benjamin Netanyahu on this point: “Never has so much been written about a speech that hasn’t been given.”
That line, delivered by the Israeli prime minister in an AIPAC speech yesterday, was a good-natured reference to the avalanche of media coverage surrounding his address to Congress on Tuesday.
I viewed this initially as the classic partisan media frenzy. Most conservatives rallied behind Bibi, and most liberals rallied behind President Obama in this most undiplomatic of disputes.
It’s just so predictable: John Boehner invites Netanyahu to give a speech without bothering to tell the Obama White House: the r

STORYLINE
In a sign of closer ties, Israel and Turkey on Sunday said they would set up a hot line for instant communications.
The announcement was made after talks between visiting Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
The hot line between the prime ministers' offices is to boost joint anti-terror efforts and other coordination.
Earlier on Sunday, Erdogan laid a wreath at Israel's Holocaust memorial, Yad Vashem.
But in a break with protocol, he did not cover his head at the Hall of Remembrance, where the ceremony took place.
Israel and Turkey, an overwhelmingly Muslim state, have long had strong military ties and important trade links.
But relations grew strained last year when Erdogan, whose party has its roots in Turkey's Islamic movement, strongly criticised Israel's treatment of the Palestinians.
Erdogan called off a previous planned visit last year after Israel killed the leader of the Islamist Hamas militant group, Sheik Ahmed Yassin, in a
missile strike.
Relations thawed after Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul visited in January and Erdogan has expressed hope that Turkey could act as a mediator between Israel and the Muslim world.
The prime minister on Monday planned to meet Palestinian leaders and visit a hotly contested Jerusalem holy site following a day of talks with Israeli leaders aimed at repairing strained relations.
He was to visit the Al Aqsa Mosque in the Old City of Jerusalem, Islam's third-holiest site, built on the ruins of the biblical Jewish Temples.
The site, claimed by both Israel and the Palestinians, is one of the most explosive issues in the region.
World leaders have been flooding into the region in recent months to capitalise on a drop in violence and new hope for peace following the death
of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat last year.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair visited in December and Russian President Vladimir Putin came last week, in the first visit there by a Kremlin leader.
Both visits were seen as efforts by the leaders to burnish their international reputations by casting themselves as key mediators in the
Mideast conflict.
With some in Washington questioning Turkey's role as a strategic ally, and Europeans increasingly sceptical about letting Turkey into the European Union, Erdogan appeared to have come for the same reason.
Israel has welcomed the visit, which it can use to showcase the benefits of its alliance with a Muslim nation.

STORYLINE:
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said on Monday he endorsed a peace plan recognising the Palestinians' right to a state because continuing to "keep 3.5 million people under occupation is a bad thing for us and them."
Sharon was defending his new position against Likud legislators intent on reminding him of his prior opposition to concessions to the Palestinians.
"This can't continue endlessly," he told angry lawmakers from his Likud Party a day after his Cabinet conditionally approved the US-backed "road map" for Mideast peace.
The plan envisages a Palestinian state by 2005.
The 12-7 Cabinet vote, with four abstentions, marked a sea change in policy, especially for hawks in Sharon's Likud party for whom Palestinian statehood has been anathema.
For decades, Sharon was Israel's most prominent hawk, arguing that a Palestinian state would pose a mortal danger to Israel.
Sharon has also, in the past, pushed for Jewish settlement expansion in the West Bank and Gaza Strip to thwart future land concessions to the Palestinians.
On Monday, he found himself in the unfamiliar position of defending his peace efforts.
"To keep 3.5 million people under occupation is bad for us and them," he said of Israeli's 36-year occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Officials were preparing on Monday for a meeting in the coming days between Sharon and Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas.
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat said on Monday morning the meeting could happen within 48 hours.
That meeting could pave the way for a three-way summit with US President George W. Bush, expected to take place next week.
The "road map" is a three-year, three-phase blueprint for stopping the violence and leading to a full Palestinian state living in peace next to Israel.

It’s just so predictable: John Boehner invites Netanyahu to give a speech without bothering to tell the Obama White House: the right cheers and the left boos.
But flip the script: If Nancy Pelosi had invited Ariel Sharon without telling George W. Bush, conservative commentators would have gone haywire criticizing this slap against the president, while liberal pundits would have focused on how important it was for Congress to hear from Sharon.
My initial assumption was that the impasse would be papered over: Either Obama would meet with Netanyahu despite the protocol of not granting an audience to a prime minister running for reelection, or Bibi would back out of the speech, or it would be moved to another location, or something.
Instead, both sides hit the escalation button. Susan Rice called Netanyahu’s visit “destructive.” Leaked intelligence documents showed Netanyahu’s declaration in 2012 that Iran was a year away from building a nuclear bomb was contradicted by his own secret service. A relationship that had been testy became openly poisonous, not withstanding Netanyahu’s comment yesterday that he means no disrespect to Obama.
That’s why the media coverage, voluminous as it is, is largely warranted. What began as a finger-in-the-eye stunt has mushroomed into a genuine crisis between the United States and its most important Mideast ally.
“The perverse genius of Benjamin Netanyahu and his aides (and their Republican handmaidens) is that they have managed to turn a moment in which President Obama should have been busy defending his pursuit of a nuclear agreement with a dangerous adversary into a stress test of the U.S.-Israel relationship,” says The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg, one of the leading journalists on the Middle East.
There are no heroes here, and National Journal’s Ron Fournier says a pox on all their houses:
“The ugly precedents set in the run-up to Tuesday's address could make it harder for U.S. presidents to execute foreign policy free of domestic politics for years to come—a prospect that should worry Republicans as much as Democrats.
“Who do we blame? Three men leading badly: Netanyahu, House Speaker John Boehner, and President Obama.”
And there are Israeli politics at play as well, as Politico notes:
“If you were coming from Mars to Israel and you would read the newspapers, you would think there is a war between Israel and the United States, or at least between Netanyahu and the White House,” said Eytan Gilboa, a professor who specializes in U.S.-Israel relations at Tel Aviv’s Bar-Ilan University. “The more the White House criticizes Netanyahu, the more votes he gets from the right, and to a certain extent, from the center.”
The backdrop, of course, is that John Kerry seems to be moving aggressively toward striking a nuclear deal with Iran that critics say will concede too much—and Netanyahu regards as an existential threat to his country.
Nobody who follows the issue needs a Bibi speech to explain the stakes or the dangers inherent in any deal with Teheran. But politics is often about theater, and all the anxiety and emotion that revolve around Israel’s struggle to survive is now at center stage.

"Definitely anyone who is familiar with the current affairs in the Middle East and the suffering of the Palestinian people, is happy to know that such people (as Ariel Sharon) die and are eliminated (from the history). It was late though, we hoped to get rid of him much sooner," said Ehteshami, a Tehran resident.
Sharon was loathed by many across the Middle East as a bitter enemy who did his utmost to sabotage the Palestinian independence hopes, by leading military offensives against them in Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza and a settlement drive on the lands they want for a state.
More than any other event, perhaps, the public perception of the man was shaped by the massacres of hundreds of Palestinians in the Lebanese refugee camps of Sabra and Chatilla by Christian militiamen allied with Israel during the 1982 invasion that was largely his brainchild.
"I know that right now in Palestine and in Gaza people are happy and are celebrating, because a criminal who killed 10 to 20 thousand people is dead. So they are happy and we are happy too," said Dadpoor, another Tehran resident.
As an army general and politician, Sharon was at the centre of the most contentious episodes of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
In the early 1990s, Sharon oversaw a massive settlement drive in the West Bank.
Sharon also placed his longtime nemesis, then-Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, under virtual house arrest at his headquarters in the West Bank town of Ramallah.
Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution that brought hardline Islamists to power in Tehran, Iran ended its alliance with Israel and started supporting Palestinian groups, such as Hamas.
The country does not recognise Israel as a state and has opposed all US-initiated peace negotiations between Israel and Palestinians.

Officials at the hospital in Tel Aviv that had been treating Ariel Sharon announced on Saturday that the former Israeli Prime Minister has died.
Hospital spokesman Dr. Shlomo Noy said on Saturday: "The Chaim Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer announces in sorrow that former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has passed."
He said that during the seven years Sharon had been treated, "he was considered to be in a state of minimal consciousness" and he had had "ups and downs in his medical condition."
"When all the systems of his body slowly deteriorated eventually, there was heart failure that caused his death," Noy added.

Mourners gathered on Sunday at the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site, in Jerusalem's Old City, to pray for Ariel Sharon, the former Israeli leader who died on Saturday aged 85.
While arranging traditional Jewish garments, Aharon Nakash, a butcher, said they were praying "with God's help, for Ariel Sharon's soul".
"We all wore phylacteries here at the Western Wall, for the ascent of his soul," he said.
Sharon, one of Israel's most iconic and controversial figures, died on Saturday, eight years after suffering a stroke that left him in a coma.

Settlers react to death of Ariel Sharon
There were mixed reactions among Israeli settlers of Efrat, West Bank, on Saturday, over the death of former leader Ariel Sharon, as some of them remembered him as a great leader, and others criticised what they considered a "mistake", referring to Israel's pull out from the Gaza Strip.
Sharon died on Saturday, eight years after a stroke put him in a coma. He was 85.
As one of Israel's most famous soldiers, Sharon was known for bold tactics and an occasional refusal to obey orders.
"It's a great loss for the Jewish people, Ariel Sharon lived for us and died for us," said Menahem Katz, a 35 year-old resident of Efrat settlement.

Israel's Sharon laid to rest in military funeral
Ariel Sharon was laid to rest on Monday at his ranch in southern Israel as the nation bid a final farewell to one of its most colourful and influential leaders - a man venerated by supporters as a warrior and statesman, but reviled in the Arab world as a war criminal.
Sharon died on Saturday, eight years after a devastating stroke removed the prime minister from office and left him in a coma from which he never recovered. He was 85.
After Israeli politicians and international dignitaries honoured Sharon, the military funeral carried a more personal tone, with Sharon's two sons eulogising their father as an inspiration for the nation.

In an address to the nation, Peres said "he was an outstanding man, and an exceptional commander who moved his people and loved them and the people loved him"

Lasting legacy of attack by Sharon-led troops on West Bank village, which left 69 dead
A village in the West Bank has been remembering its darkest hour - a raid attributed to former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's commando unit that left dozens of people dead.
Sharon died on Saturday, aged 85, after an eight year coma following a stroke in 2005.
In 1953 he was commanding Unit 101, an elite Israeli commando force formed to carry out reprisals for Arab attacks.
After the murder of an Israeli woman and her two children, Sharon's troops blew up more than 40 houses in Qibya - which was then ruled by Jordan - in retaliation for their deaths.
Sixty-nine people are understood to have been killed in the attack, but Qibya vi

In a speech to the closing session of the World Zionist Conference on Thursday, Sharon told delegates that Israel was battling a terrorist organisation with links to the 'axis of evil.'
He said that the regimes of Iraq, Iran and Syria were involved in the current wave of attacks in Israel.
The Prime Minister vowed Israel would continue to do battle with Palestinian militants, reinforcing his well-known view that the time is not right for renewing peace talks.
After his speech, an argument over Israel's continuing occupation of the Palestinian territory descended into scuffles between different groups of conference delegates.
At the scene of Wednesday night's suicide attack municipal workers were busy repairing damage to the bus stop and clearing away debris.
The city is still on a high state of alert with hundreds of extra police offices drafted in to man roadblocks, check identity cards and search vehicles.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said on Sunday peace efforts with the Palestinians would be frozen if they did not crack down on militant groups.
His comments came before convening his weekly Cabinet meeting in the wake of a suicide bombing that killed four people outside a Tel Aviv nightclub on Friday night.
Sharon said, "There will be no progress politically - and I repeat no political progress - until the Palestinians carry out a determined campaign to destroy the terrorist groups and their infrastructure in the territories of the Palestinian Authority."
Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia responded by saying that the Palestinians wanted to continue the peace process.
The latest round of negotiations began earlier this month at a regional summit in Egypt''s Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheik, where both sides declared a cessation of violence.
"If Israel decides to cut off their contact with the Palestinians, then that is their choice, we will not interfere or cry over such a decision, but we say that there is a chance that started in Sharm el-Sheik and we need to develop and push our efforts," Qureia told reporters.
Israeli military officials said on Sunday they received information a month ago that the cell behind Friday''s bombing was planning an attack and passed it along to Palestinian officials.
They claim that the Palestinian officials still did nothing to prevent it.
After Friday''s attack, Israel has frozen its plans to withdraw troops from five towns in the West Bank.
Israel has halted the "security handover" because, Israeli officials said, it no longer believes the Palestinian security forces are capable of controlling the towns.
Qureia criticised the decision as "totally unacceptable."
On Saturday, Palestinian police arrested two suspects with ties to Islamic Jihad.

Palestinians celebrate death of former Israeli PM Ariel Sharon
Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank celebrated the death of former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on Saturday.
In Gaza, crowds gathered to burn pictures of Sharon, and hand out sweets.
Women ululated while others stamped a photograph of Sharon into the ground.
"We congratulate the Islamic and Arab people," said local resident Mosaab Abreem.
"Everyone who suffered from this butcher. We congratulate all of them that he (Sharon) left this world, and we wish that a day will come when Israel won't exist," he continued.
Meanwhile in the West Bank city of Ramallah, people reacted with satisfaction to the news.
"The world lost a butcher" said local resident Fouad Jamhour.
"This is a guy who committed lots of crimes against the Palestinian people. So definitely when he doesn't exist in this world any more, it's something that brings pleasure to the Palestinian people," he added.
Sharon was loathed by many across the Middle East as a bitter enemy who did his utmost to sabotage the Palestinian independence hopes, by leading military offensives against them in Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza and a settlement drive on the lands they want for a state.
He was the godfather of Israel's settlement campaign in the West Bank.
More than any other event, perhaps, the public perception of Sharon was shaped by the massacres of Palestinians in the Lebanese refugee camps of Sabra and Chatilla by Christian militiamen allied with Israel during the 1982 invasion that was largely his brainchild.
He detested Yasser Arafat, his lifelong adversary, as an "obstacle to peace" and was in turn detested in the Arab world.
Israelis called Sharon a war hero while his enemies called him a war criminal.
Sharon suffered a massive stroke on 4 January 2006.
He died in Tel Aviv on Saturday, aged 85.

STORYLINE:
On January 11th 2014 the former Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon died, aged 85.
Sharon never regained consciousness after suffering a massive stroke on January 4th 2006.
Sharon's son Gilad announced his father's death on the afternoon of January 11th.
"He has gone. He went when he decided to go," Gilad Sharon said outside the Sheba Medical Centre near Tel Aviv, where his father had been treated.
Sharon's health had taken a downturn over the past week and a half as a number of his organs, including his kidneys, stopped functioning.
Sharon, an Israeli war hero tarnished by a massacre of Palestinian refugees in the early 1980s, carefully tried to cultivate his right-wing, hawkish image over two decades, capped by his election as the country's 15th prime minister in 2001, the unilateral pullout from Gaza in the summer of 2005 and his founding of a more centrist negotiation-minded party, Kadima, that won elections in March, 2006 as he lay gravely ill in a coma, his public life at an end.
Sharon was one of the most charismatic and controversial figures in Israel during a public career that spanned more than half a century.
He fought in most of Israel's wars, gained a reputation as a military genius and was the godfather of Israel's massive settlement campaign in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. A career hardliner, who assumed a slightly more moderate stance in the last year of his life, Sharon was widely detested in the Arab world.
As a soldier, Sharon was known for daring tactics as well as his disregard for the enemy civilian populace, sometimes wilfully disobeying orders of his commanders. As a politician, he was known as "the bulldozer," never shy of confrontation, a man who could get things done, but who showed little regard for the opinions of his critics.
This go-it-alone attitude also shaped his second term as prime minister. Expressing impatience with stalled peace efforts, Sharon hastily launched a unilateral "disengagement" plan to separate Israelis and Palestinians.
Sharon was born to Russian immigrant parents on February 27th 1928, in the farming community of Kfar Malal north of Tel Aviv.

A team of Israeli and U.S. scientists say new tests on comatose former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon show significant brain activity.
Ben-Gurion University said Sharon responded to external stimuli at Soroka Medical Centre in Beersheba.
He was shown pictures of his family and listened to recordings of his son's voice while undergoing a special brain imaging scan.
Alon Friedman, the Director of Neurology at Soroka Medical Centre said on Monday that the former Prime Minster was tested on "three different modalities": Aural, visual and reaction to touch.
"The brain reacted to the external stimulation which means that the information got into the brain, and was analyzed or was processed within his brain," Friedman said.
However, Sharon remains in a vegetative state.
Longtime Sharon confidante, Raanan Gissin, said his old friend deserves to end his life normally.
"The hope is not that he will return to be the leader that he was, but basically the hope of his family as well as the public in Israel, that Sharon will return to normal life, that he could return back to his farm," Gissin said.
Sharon, 84, led Israel from 2001 until suffering a stroke in 2006. Since then, he has been in a vegetative state, connected to a respirator.
Sharon was a storied military officer who fought in three wars before entering politics.
He unilaterally withdrew Israeli troops and settlers from Gaza in 2005.

EDIT Hospital spokesman announces death of former Israeli PM Ariel Sharon
Sharon, the hard-charging Israeli general and prime minister who was admired and hated for his battlefield exploits and ambitions to reshape the Middle East, was 85 when he died, after a stroke in 2006 left him in a coma from which he never awoke.
As one of Israel's most famous soldiers, Sharon was known for bold tactics and an occasional refusal to obey orders.
As a politician he became known as "the bulldozer," a man contemptuous of his critics while also capable of getting things done.
He led his country into a divisive war in Lebanon in 1982 and was branded as indirectly responsible for the massacre of hundreds of Palestinians at the Sabra and Chatilla refugee camps outside Beirut when his troops allowed allied Lebanese militias into the camps.
Yet ultimately he transformed himself into a prime minister and statesman.

Jews pray at Western Wall for late former PM Sharon
"I pray for him (Sharon), he is a leader of our people, former leader of our people, great, individual, I pray for him, I pray for our people," said Nathaniel Faulkner, a student from the United Sates who was praying at the Western Wall.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Israelis lined up outside Israel's parliament building on Sunday, to pay their last respects to Sharon, whose coffin was displayed in a plaza in front of the Knesset, where a stream of visitors passed by to snap photos and say farewell.
A funeral service to be attended by dignitaries from around the world, including US Vice President Joe Biden, is scheduled for Monday.

The life and career of Sharon will be remembered for its three distinct stages: his eventful and controversial time in uniform, his years as a political operator who helped create Israel's settlement movement and mastermind of the Lebanon invasion in which hundreds of Palestinian refugees were slaughtered, then his successful term as a pragmatist prime minister, capped by a dramatic withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and curtailed at the height of his popularity by his sudden stroke.
His withdrawal plan uprooted all 8,500 Jewish settlers living there.
His allies said the move was a revolutionary step in peacemaking; his detractors said it was a tactical sacrifice to strengthen Israel's hold on much of the West Bank.
"I believe that Ariel Sharon sacrificed the Gaza Strip in order to save Judea and Samaria (the biblical terms for the West Bank) to show what happens when the Israeli army and settlers they move out, no peace comes, comes hell, hell," said Gil Daleski, a Jerusalem resident.
"I remember him as a great man and a great leader but I think he made a mistake with the disengagement because it didn't bring us peace," said Ruth Dakar, an 18 year-old resident of Tekoa settlement.
Either way, the withdrawal and the barrier he was building between Israel and the West Bank permanently changed the face of the conflict and marked the final legacy of a man who shaped Israel as much as any other leader.
Sharon's body was to lie in state at the parliament on Sunday before he is laid to rest at his ranch in southern Israel on Monday, Israeli media reported.

"It was a great privilege to see how you took seriously and with utmost respect and responsibility your role as prime minister," said his son Omri. "How you learned about every subject, weighed and made decisions, how you planned a strategy, learning every implication of your decisions, and especially worrying about the future of the state of Israel, which was so important for you."
With hundreds of officials and everyday Israelis on hand, Sharon's other son, Gilad, addressed his father a final time.
"There is no area in the life of the country that you weren't involved in, influencing it and putting your mark on, from the security of the country and the IDF (Israeli Defence Force), where you set the standards and reached records, to agriculture, to industry, to immigration, to construction, in foreign affairs and more," he said.
Earlier on Monday in a state ceremony, VIPs eulogised Sharon as a fearless warrior and bold leader who devoted his life to protecting Israel's security.
One of Israel's greatest and most divisive figures, Sharon rose through the ranks of the military, moving into politics and overcoming scandal and controversy to become prime minister.
He spent most of his life battling Arab enemies and promoting Jewish settlement on war-won lands.
But in a surprising about-face, he led a historic withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in 2005, uprooting all soldiers and settlers from the territory after a 38-year presence in a move he said was necessary to ensure Israel's security.
His backers called him a hero, remembering his daring exploits that helped turn the tide of the 1973 Mideast war in Israel's favour and, after becoming prime minister, his harsh crackdown that helped end a violent Palestinian uprising.
His detractors held him responsible for years of bloodshed.
They remember his role in a 1953 commando raid that killed 69 Arabs in the West Bank, and as the mastermind of Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon - where he became complicit in a massacre in the Sabra and Chatilla refugee camps by an Israeli-allied militia that killed hundreds of Palestinians.
Even Israel's withdrawal from Gaza is scorned as a unilateral act that left the beleaguered area doomed for failure.

Sixty-nine people are understood to have been killed in the attack, but Qibya village records and memorials show 77 deaths.
Sharon later said he thought the houses were empty.
Qibya resident Hamed Ghethan was just four years old when the raid took place, and said that he can remember older residents placing their hands over the children's mouths so they wouldn't make a sound during the raid.
"Sharon's name reminds me of 77 martyrs from my village Qibya, which symbolises an infinite brutality for killing innocents including women, elders and children," said Ghethan.
Walking around the ruins of buildings destroyed in the raid, Ghethan visited his old family compound, now abandoned.
He said 29 members of his extended family hid in one room during the raid.
"There is no gloating in death," he said. "But this is the inevitable end of each tyrant."
Each year Qibya residents stage a memorial march through the village.
"I think the people of Qibya wished that Sharon was tortured before his death or was tortured in the darkest prison, or was hanged, or died slowly," said Waheed Quttnah, the head of Qibya's village council.
"He would feel the torture he caused to the victims and the survivors of this massacre and to their children afterwards."

The Prophecy: The late Rabbi Yitzhak Kaduri said on his death bed that the Messiah had visited him, His name is Yahshua (aka Jesus Christ) and that He would return to Israel shortly after the death of Ariel Sharon.
This is an update on Ariel Sharon's condition and is intended to inform those who are not aware of this story. As far as being a prophecy, it is extra biblical and is not intended to be taken as 100% valid Bible prophecy. I follow the story at my own interest and I am simply sharing for the benefit of others. Please share this on your networks as well if you would like. Thank you and keep looking up! ~Scottie
Notes of interest:
Ariel Sharon suffered a serious stroke on January 4, 2006, and has been comatose since.

Sharon, 85, died on Saturday after spending the last eight years of his life
motionless in a hospital bed, pitched into a coma by a stroke and far from
the public gaze.

"We are pleased with the Jewish people. From the 15th century and until today our relationships is obvious to everyone. Thank you very much."

STORYLINE:

STORYLINE
