A cartoon animation of a geyser, showing how it erupts, as well as what happens out of sight, underground. Not much is known about the details of the plumbing systems, so this is only a symbolic representation. But it does address some of the common misconceptions (including the fact that the geyser is not heated directly by "lava", but by hot deep groundwater), and shows a little of what goes on in detail (rising steam bubbles and convection warming the entire water column until it is near boiling throughout). Yes, I need to do a much better, detailed one, with a running clock, a moving P-T diagram & temperature profile, etc. Maybe someday, but for now, here's a rough approximation.

Geysertimes.org was predicting the eruption of Beehive Geyser at 5:57 pm, so I headed out on the boardwalk to see if I could capture the show. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Beehive, she is the second or third largest "regularly active" geyser in Yellowstone. Beehive can reach heights of over 200' -- higher than that of her better known nearby rival, Old Faithful. However, unlike Old Faithful, Beehive can be fickle and inconsistent, so witnessing her incredible display can take a bit of patience; she has a variance of -+ 2 hours, and can be dormant for days at a time. Beehive is one of a handful of geysers that has what is called an indicator; a physical feature that sometimes indicates an eruption is imminent. "Beehive's Indicator" is a small vent about 10' to the SE of Beehive that produces a steady 6' stream of water about 10-15 minutes before Beehive's eruption. This year Indicator has been going off for extended periods of time NOT followed by a Beehive eruption (which I had frustratingly witnessed two days earlier). This evening's predicted eruption time came and went -- then at 6:08 pm Indicator sprang to life. Eleven minutes later, Beehive, just 30' from the boardwalk, erupted with a roar, sending a 200' high column of water cascading onto a 50' section of the boardwalk -- I could literally feel the ground shaking under my feet. The bright light of the setting sun danced diamond-like through the glistening spray, producing a complete double rainbow so brilliant that I felt I could actually reach out and touch it. Although it was all over in 5 minutes, Beehive's eruption was phenomenal!!!

My A O Smith Water Geyser.
It is good and energy efficient. The only problem with this geyser is you have to wait for 3-4 minutes in very cold winter to get another bucket of hot water.

A geyser (US /ˈɡaɪzər/; UK /ˈɡiːzə/) is a spring characterized by intermittent discharge of water ejected turbulently and accompanied by a vapour phase (steam). The word geyser comes from Geysir, the name of an erupting spring at Haukadalur, Iceland; that name, in turn, comes from the Icelandic verb geysa, "to gush", the verb itself from Old Norse.
The formation of geysers is due to particular hydrogeological conditions, which exist in only a few places on Earth, so they are a fairly rare phenomenon. Generally all geyser field sites are located near active volcanic areas, and the geyser effect is due to the proximity of magma. Generally, surface water works its way down to an average depth of around 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) where it contacts hot rocks. The resultant boiling of the pressurized water results in the geyser effect of hot water and steam spraying out of the geyser's surface vent (a hydrothermal explosion).
About a thousand known geysers exist worldwide, roughly half of which are in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, United States. A geyser's eruptive activity may change or cease due to ongoing mineral deposition within the geyser plumbing, exchange of functions with nearby hot springs, earthquake influences, and human intervention.

A cartoon animation of a geyser, showing how it erupts, as well as what happens out of sight, underground. Not much is known about the details of the plumbing systems, so this is only a symbolic representation. But it does address some of the common misconceptions (including the fact that the geyser is not heated directly by "lava", but by hot deep groundwater), and shows a little of what goes on in detail (rising steam bubbles and convection warming the entire water column until it is near boiling throughout). Yes, I need to do a much better, detailed one, with a running clock, a moving P-T diagram & temperature profile, etc. Maybe someday, but for now, here's a rough approximation.

Geysertimes.org was predicting the eruption of Beehive Geyser at 5:57 pm, so I headed out on the boardwalk to see if I could capture the show. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Beehive, she is the second or third largest "regularly active" geyser in Yellowstone. Beehive can reach heights of over 200' -- higher than that of her better known nearby rival, Old Faithful. However, unlike Old Faithful, Beehive can be fickle and inconsistent, so witnessing her incredible display can take a bit of patience; she has a variance of -+ 2 hours, and can be dormant for days at a time. Beehive is one of a handful of geysers that has what is called an indicator; a physical feature that sometimes indicates an eruption is imminent. "Beehive's Indicator" is a small vent about 10' to the SE of Beehive that produces a steady 6' stream of water about 10-15 minutes before Beehive's eruption. This year Indicator has been going off for extended periods of time NOT followed by a Beehive eruption (which I had frustratingly witnessed two days earlier). This evening's predicted eruption time came and went -- then at 6:08 pm Indicator sprang to life. Eleven minutes later, Beehive, just 30' from the boardwalk, erupted with a roar, sending a 200' high column of water cascading onto a 50' section of the boardwalk -- I could literally feel the ground shaking under my feet. The bright light of the setting sun danced diamond-like through the glistening spray, producing a complete double rainbow so brilliant that I felt I could actually reach out and touch it. Although it was all over in 5 minutes, Beehive's eruption was phenomenal!!!
