http://democracynow.org - At the Venice Biennale, the oldest and most prestigious international biennial art exhibition in the world, we speak with one of the most celebrated Palestinian artists, Emily Jacir. In 2007, she won the Golden Lion here at the Venice Biennale for her work "Material for a Film," a large-scale installation based on the life of Palestinian writer Wael Zuaiter, who was assassinated near his home in Rome, Italy, by Israeli Mossad agents in 1972. For years Jacir has created groundbreaking art to capture the Palestinian experience and other issues. In 2001, she presented a piece titled "Memorial to 418 Palestinian Villages Destroyed, Depopulated, and Occupied by Israel in 1948," consisting of a large refugee tent on which the names of 418 Palestinians villages were embroidered. She later did a project called "ex libris" that commemorated the approximately 30,000 books from Palestinian homes, libraries and institutions that were looted by Israeli authorities in 1948.

PALESTINE RESISTS THROUGH THE EYES OF ARTIST SULEIMAN MANSOUR. He is one of the leading Palestinian artists born in the Palestinian village of Birzeit in 1947. He studied Fine Arts at the Bezalel Art Academy in Jerusalem. He is a co-founder of the Wasiti Art Center in Jerusalem (Now director of the Center). He is also a member of the “New Vision” artist group, which focuses on the use of local material in artwork. Mansour’s creativity and determination to revive Palestinian identity has led him through a diverse range of disciplines, including cartoon drawing and authoring two books on Palestinian folklore. He has had solo exhibitions in Ramallah, New York, Cairo, Gaza and Stavanger, Norway. In 1998 he won the ‘Nile award’ at the Cairo Biennial and the Palestine Prize for Visual arts.
Mansour first came to prominence for his surrealist masterpiece, Camels of Hardship in 1973. The Dali-esque image @ 3:52 of a Palestinian peasant struggling under the literal weight of dispossession has become a classic of its kind, and became the launch pad for a career that would be defined by original approaches to representing the struggle for his homeland.
Identified as a subversive by Israeli security forces, Mansour was plagued with harassment. In 1981 at Gallery79 (during the Intifada), an exhibition was closed after only six hours and he was arrested. “They told us we are not allowed to use red, green, black, and white in our works,” he recounted in a later interview. Such treatment was to be a recurring theme of a career that was regularly interrupted with jail time.

Nabil Anani is one of the most prominent Palestinian artists working today, born in Latroun in 1943. After graduating in Fine Arts from Alexandria University, Egypt in 1969, Anani returned to the occupied Palestinian territory and began a fruitful career as an artist and a teaching mentor at the UN training college in Ramallah. He is considered as a key founder of the contemporary Palestinian art movement. He held his first exhibition in Jerusalem in 1972 and has since exhibited widely in Europe, North America, the Middle East, North Africa and Japan – both as an individual artist and with groups of his Palestinian contemporaries.
Anani is a multi-talented artist, for he is a painter, a ceramicist and a sculptor. He pioneered the use of local media such as leather, henna, natural dyes, Papier-mâché, wood, beads and copper. Over the past four decades, he built an impressive catalogue of outstanding, innovative and unique art. Anani was awarded the first Palestinian National Prize for Visual Art in 1997 and became the head of the League of Palestinian Artists in 1998. Much of Anani’s work focuses on the symbolism of the olive tree, a major component of Palestine’s landscape. For him, the destruction of the olive tree by Israeli forces parallels the plight of the people living under the occupation.

The large-scale installation has two components; a full-sized, interior maze and a large cardboard model of an Arab town or refugee camp. The walls of the maze are clad in lenticular micro-lens panels depicting photographs of walls, windows, doors and various architectural details and streets in East Jerusalem, Hebron and some of the larger Palestinian refugee camps. This lenticular panel allows the images to be visible and interchangeable by movement. The slightest movement within the maze of this installation is enough to transform and relocate your surroundings completely; it pushes on the limits of the relationship between movement and narrative.
At the end of the maze there is a large open space revealing a model consisting of hundreds of cardboard boxes apparently stacked randomly against the gallery walls and around the floor. Windows and doors have been cut into the boxes to create rudimentary model houses. Enter Ghost, Exit Ghost offers us a compelling illusion within an illusion; an installation which asks its occupants how we are figured within the fundamental ambiguities of the spectral spaces of occupation and the political rhetoric of security and defense used to justify them, along with the control and suppression of civil life and human rights they bring about. The installation plays with our ambivalent relationship with these kinds of spaces in which the pleasures and thrill of the maze are partly depend upon disorientation and fear.

Art may have different purposes and intentions. For artist Lina Qadri, art is a way to express the feelings and dreams of women living in a traditional community. While many people observe women's day in March, Qadri's defense of women issues is a daily journey.

Palestinian Artists Turn Horrors Of War Into Shockingly Powerful Art
It is often said that during times of war, man’s creativity is pushed to the limit, and for Palestinians Tawfik Gebreel, Bushra Shanan, and Belal Khaled, this statement certainly rings true. When recent Israeli rocket strikes into Gaza intensified and the death toll catastrophically rose, these artists decided to use their skills to turn the images of destruction into one that more closely resembl

A state-of-the art Palestinian city with residential towers, a mall and a convention centre is rapidly going up on once desolate West Bank hills and turning into a symbol of national pride.
But the West Bank's largest private investment project, totalling more than 1 (b) billion US dollars, has also suffered costly delays because of wrangling with Israel over an access road that still lacks final approval.
"We've been five years waiting for a reasonable access road; we've got a small part of the road and a temporary approval, not a permanent approval," explained Palestinian-American developer Bashar Masri. "Although a city requires several roads."
Rawabi's bumpy history illustrates the constraints of doing business under occupation, Masri said.
It's the first new Palestinian city to be built since Israel captured the West Bank in 1967.
But the project is about much more then real estate, Masri said.
"It's a message to our people that we can also put facts on the ground," he said, using a phrase associated with Israel's settlement construction on lands the Palestinians want for a future state.
"It's a statement for ourselves that we can build a state, we can build a city, we can do large projects, we can create the pillars of the state. (The) economy is part of the pillars of the state; better standards of living is part of the pillars of the state," he added.
It's a harbinger of challenges US Secretary of State John Kerry likely will face as he promotes a three-year plan for even more ambitious economic projects in the Palestinian territories, particularly in areas where Israel has restricted Palestinian development in the past.
The plan is meant to transform a sluggish Palestinian economy held back by Israeli constraints on access and movement, as Israelis and Palestinians negotiate the terms of Palestinian statehood.
But progress on the economic track is unlikely without a breakthrough in the talks, which are stuck after four months.
Kerry was back in the region last week to try to break the impasse, but the two sides remain far apart.
Rawabi - Arabic for hills - offers a glimpse of what could be if statehood talks succeed.
The city looks like the large urban Israeli settlements in the West Bank with neat rows of apartment buildings and will have amenities unheard of in Palestinian towns, at least in such a concentration.
Those include an open-air shopping mall, a convention centre, restaurants, three movie theatres, a gym, a five-star hotel, a science museum, a medical complex, an
amphitheatre seating 5-thousand and a football stadium.
It's the first Palestinian city built according to a master plan, in contrast to the crowded and often chaotic West Bank towns and refugee camps.
The Palestinians have lived for the most part under someone else's rule, with limited local authority that didn't allow for large-scale urban design.
Construction in Rawabi began in 2011, with 5-thousand labourers working in two shifts.
Eventually, Rawabi is to have 30-thousand residents in 6-thousand apartments and homes.
Construction worker Ahmed Abu Odeh said he hoped to one day buy an apartment in the new city.
"I am a resident of Al-Amari refugee camp. It's a crowded place with a big population and there are no services there. I started working in Rawabi a year and a half ago. It is a nice city and there is a municipality and services here, everything," he said.
"If I have enough money I would like to buy an apartment here for me or for my son."
Apartments in two of 23 neighbourhoods and parts of the town centre have been completed, and the first tenants are to move in by May.
The World Bank has said that less than 1 percent of Area C is open for Palestinian use.

After the great success of the Palestine Peace Festival of May 2014, DSTT CULTURE in cooperation with Palestinian General Delegation in Canada invite you to the Palestinian Cultural Show ; one of the most festive events of this year with the participation of several figures from the world of Palestinian art and music. Last year the Palestine Peace Festival (May 2014) had more than 1,000 supporters, where we presented, for the first time in history, our flag of peace (66 meters) which was signed by more than 30 000 thousand people from different origins, religions, colours and countries. It has been featured in over 70 events and festivals and finally was delivered to Palestine where it was displayed at a rally in the city of Ramallah in October 2014 where it was placed on the tomb of the martyr leader Abu Ammar in the tenth anniversary of his death.
This event is designed to keep the Palestinian heritage we cherish alive, and to showcase the identity of the young Palestinian generation who are the sons of the original community rooted in the land of Palestine, since the time of the ancient Canaanite civilization. We wish to promote the cultural heritage of the Palestinian identity and to share the beauty of this heritage with people of all nationalities.

It is often said that during times of war, man’s creativity is pushed to the limit, and for Palestinians Tawfik Gebreel, Bushra Shanan, and Belal Khaled, this statement certainly rings true. When recent Israeli rocket strikes into Gaza intensified and the death toll catastrophically rose, these artists decided to use their skills to turn the images of destruction into one that more closely resembled their experience. Some of these powerful images are filled with messages of resistance and hope, while others convey strong feelings of despair and grief.
We hope, for their sake, they will have less smoke to work with in the future.

Palestine
Palestine is the Muslim and Arab half of the Holy Land. After visiting Jerusalem, we harvest olives near Ramallah, follow pilgrims to the place of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, approach Abraham’s tomb — as both Jews and Muslims do — in Hebron, drop in on friends for dinner, and bob in the Dead Sea. We'll also learn about walls, Israeli settlements, and the challenges facing this region. | © 2014 Rick

Najat’s Statement
Why I want to tell this story: I was asked by good people of conscience who wanted to hear my story and let other people hear it as well. This is the essence of humanity when people sit together, listen to each other, share feelings and emotions, and show concern and love that come from within their hearts. Those people care to know the true stories of what really happened to other people’s lives and what caused their suffering. Human nature is universal. Every human being on this earth has the same feelings of love and hate, happiness and sadness, security and instability, greed and hostility, fear, agony, suffering, and worry… and the list can go on. As long as one is aware of the fact that people are all equal and have the same rights, without distinction between race, colour, ethnicity, religion, and above all have a heart that guides from within, “love and peace” can prevail among all people. As a Palestinian artist, I dedicate myself to preserving our heritage by painting my culture’s embroidery designs on porcelain tiles. Each piece aims to give a voice to the voiceless. Each piece aims to elevate truth and justice. Indeed, each piece aims to bring peace to all peoples living in the Holy land. That is why I decided to tell my story: to shed light to the masses so they can hopefully spread love for humanity’s sake.
Najat’s Bio
Najat El-Taji El-Khairy is a Canadian porcelain artist of Palestinian origin. She was born in Heliopolis Cairo Egypt in 1948, the year of the Nakba (or Disaster) that defined all generations of the Palestinian people.
Her father, Subhi El-Taji El-Farouki, was born in Ramla in 1910. Following his school years in Ramla and university years in Britain, where he learned agriculture, he moved on to help his father Abdel Rahman El Taji El-Farouki’s business. His father (Najat’s grandfather) was born in Palestine and was a wealthy land owner in Ramla, who worked in trading oranges grown in his fields in Wadi Hunein.
Najat’s mother Suad El Taji El-Farouki, born in Ramla in 1910, is Shukri El Taji El-Farouki’s daughter. Suad’s father was also born in Palestine. Suad attended the Schmitt School in Jerusalem and later graduated from the Friends girl’s school in Ramallah. Both of Najat’s grandfathers sought to expand their wealth and bought lands in Egypt. In 1948 they were forced out of Palestine leaving their mansions, lands and properties behind.
In 1968, Najat graduated from Mère de Dieu, a French Catholic private school. That same year, she married Mazen Nazif El-Khairy born in Jerusalem in 1938. She moved to Riyadh Saudi Arabia with her husband; they had two girls, Rasha born in Cairo in 1970, and & Mona born in Beirut in 1971. Najat completed a BA in English literature at King Saud University (University of Riyadh) in 1976. Mohammad and Ridha, her two sons, were born in Geneva Switzerland in 1980 & 1981 respectively.
In 1988 Najat moved with her family to Montreal Canada where, in 1992, she became a Canadian citizen.
Throughout her life between Cairo, Riyadh and Montreal Najat studied music, painting, ballet, embroidery, stained glass, pottery, silk painting and painting on porcelain. In addition, she researches, lectures, and advocates Palestinian art heritage. She has applied her forty years of art experience to the creation of a new and exciting medium: Palestinian Embroidery art painted and preserved on porcelain tiles. Najat utilizes a variety of proprietary painting techniques developed over her career. Her artwork is displayed in various museums and galleries throughout North America.

This master class is presented by Palestine Cuts, a new art initiative by the Center for Palestine Studies. Mohanad Yaqubi will deliver a Master Class on Palestinian Militant Cinema. Drawing on recently found film rushes, rare documentary footage and clips of Third Cinema, Yaqubi will introduce us to a fascinating and often neglected world that engages with the depth of Palestine's film-making history, its role in shaping Palestinian identity, and its ties to the wider Third Cinema movement. The presentation will raise questions with regards to the role of 'militant cinema' as a tool of documentation but also to intervene in the political upheavals and liberation movements that shook the world in the midst of the past century. Counterpoising the militant period of Palestine cinema with post-Oslo cinema will open up a conversation about the political role and nature of Palestinian cinematic language today, its potential and possibility.
Palestine Cuts is a new space for emerging and established filmmakers and video-artists to present and discuss their work in an engaging and encouraging environment. It promotes stimulating audiovisual projects (documentary and fiction film, video, installations, etc.) that challenge existing conventions and offer critical and alternative views about Palestine and Palestinians. Palestine Cuts also is interested in the broader regional and global socio-political, economic and cultural context of which Palestine is an intrinsic part. In this sense, we hope to bring Palestine-related work into conversation with other Arab and international filmmakers and audiovisual artists. Through screenings, discussions, master classes as well as open and closed workshops for work in progress and finished projects, Palestine Cuts hopes to attract a wide array of artists, producers, curators, critics, scholars, activists and others interested in committed audiovisual work that opens up new spaces for imagination.

Part 2 https://vimeo.com/debalie/impactofart2 or http://youtu.be/OH3M1rTAH-E -
- To conclude the three-day conference What’s Art Got to Do with It?, some of the most complex and intriguing issues of the whole conference, will be shared with the public. This final program is a co-creation of about 30 artists from Israel, Palestine, the Netherlands and Flanders, who are especially assembled for What’s Art Got to Do with It?
The artists with various disciplinary backgrounds -theatre, dance, and visual art- will discuss the following questions with the audience:
- What is the relation between the engaged or critical artist and the political-economic system in which he or she operates?
- What is the value and power of art in a heavily politicized context such as Israel/Palestine?
- What is the value in countries such as the Netherlands and Flanders, where there is debate about the intrinsic value of art and art seems to be primarily legitimized on the premise of its economic value? What is then the role of the public as art consumer?
- Does the public have the power to actually influence political policy decisions, for example through a cultural boycott of Israel?
About What's Art Got to Do With It?
From April 29th until May 1st 30 artists from Israel, Palestine, the Netherlands, and Flanders come together in De Balie for What’s Art Got to Do with It?, a three-day cultural conference - with discussions, film, dance, theatre, and literature – about art in the context of the conflict, and the complex relations between (the) art (scene), government, and public. An in-depth debate about art in which art itself plays a major role. What’s Art Got to Do with It? is organized by De Balie, Dancing on the Edge, and A Different Jewish Voice.
With Nir de Volff, Taher Najib, Eran Ben Michael and George Elias Tobal.

The Center for Public Scholarship (http://www.newschool.edu/cps/) at The New School (http://www.newschool.edu) presents a public conference on The Fear of Art. Jeffrey Deitch (art dealer), Boris Groys, (art critic), Jack Persekian, (Palestinian Museum director), Lisa Phillips, (New Museum director), and Svetlana Mintcheva (program director at the National Coalition Against Censorship) will examine self-censorship in arts institutions.
Artists are imprisoned and exiled. Art continues to be banned and destroyed. This is evidence of the power of images to unsettle, to speak truth to power, to question our cherished cultural norms and our ideas about what is sacred. Join artists, scholars, and museum directors to discuss the power of art and the importance of advocating for art, artists, and freedom of expression.
For complete information, please visit: http://www.newschool.edu/cps/fear-of-art/
The conference has been made possible with generous support from Agnes Gund, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts (http://www.warholfoundation.org/), Ford Foundation (http://www.fordfoundation.org/), ArteEast (http://www.arteeast.org/), and Larry Warsh. The movement for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions against the State of Israel has taken major strides recently in the United States. With divestment votes moving forward on campuses across the country, and votes to boycott Israeli institutions passed by the American Studies Association and other organizations, discussions of the movement and its objectives have entered the mainstream.
At the same time, others have redoubled their efforts to suppress discussion of Israel's escalating war against Palestinians, promoting legislation to defund institutions that participate in boycotts, and pressuring university administrations to punish students and faculty who support BDS.
ALI ABUNIMAH and MAX BLUMENTHAL, two leading voices in the movement in solidarity with Palestine, discuss their acclaimed new books, recent developments in the Middle East and United States, and the future of Palestine.
Ali Abunimah is the author of The Battle for Justice in Palestine. Max Blumenthal is the author of Goliath: Life and Loathing in Greater Israel.

Sponsored by Haymarket Books and Lannan Foundation.
