Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of
Rovinj, which was a little fishing village under the rule of the
Venetian republic.
Besides fishermen, famous sailors, seamen, pirates also lived here and the little town is also famous for the stones carried from here to the doge's palace on the Venetian
St. Mark's Square.
Rovinj was once a little fishing village under the rule of the Venetian republic. Besides fishermen, famous sailors, seamen, moreover, pirates also lived here. The little town is also famous for the stones carried from here to the doge's palace on the Venetian St. Mark's Square. The clock tower and the triumphal arch like gate are still decorated by the coat of arms of
Venice, the winged lion.
Uphill, downhill, winding narrow alleys, passages and small streets constitute the old town which can be approached through seven gates. Of these, three stand in the harbor. The tall houses and the narrow streets provide protection from the scorching sun and laundry of course is not kept in the bathrooms to dry.
Intimate archaic houses climb up the Monterosso
Hill.
Above them, sits enthroned, the biggest baroque church of
Istria St. Euphemia Parish built in the 1700s. Its 60m high bell tower was designed after the Campanella of Venice. On top, there's a statue of the saint for which it was named which rotates around its axis indicating
the direction of the wind for sailors.
Behind the altar stands the stone coffin of
Saint Euphenia who died as a
martyr under the rule of
Diocletian. According to legend, the virgin who held on to her
Christian faith until the end was cast in front of lions but the beast submitted to her. Her persecutors executed her then. The frescoes of the churches depict these scenes and the miraculous arrival of the stone sarcophagus from Venice over the sea.
As homage to the saint, every autumn a series of festivals is organized with fine arts exhibitions and a series of classical music performances. On the cobblestone streets of the old town, we can walk down to the harbor where the bustling and colorful sight of fishing boats, sailing boats, yachts and motorboats awaits us.
Something we can never tire off. Lots of creatures of the sea are sold on small boats. Clams, corals, snails, crabs, all processed into gifts.
The streets surrounding the harbor not only make for pleasant evening walks.
We can also have lunch, coffee or ice cream under the umbrellas of the espresso bars and restaurants. A channel stretched in place of the former main square, castle walls and towers protected the city which became a peninsula only in the
17th century when the channel was filled in. Many cruises depart from the harbor of Rovinj.
The Fjord of Limski is one of the spectacles of Istria.
Let's take a look at pirate cave which was the hiding place of sea robbers.
Today, it's a tourist attraction and the site of many adventure film shootings. The fjord is famous all around Croatia for its oyster farms. The fjord, lying between Rovinj and
Vrsar is nothing more than a 600m wide, 30m deep, 12km long scenic bay that was deepened by a lost river and flooded by the sea. Its spectacular green water can be attributed to the mixing of fresh and salt water.
