The conquests of Alexander the Great and the Wars of his Successors which we covered in our previous animated historical documentaries (http://bit.ly/2BoFtRD) opened Asia to the Greek influence and culture and the process of Hellenization encompassed all regions from Egypt to China. However, the easternmost state the Ancient Greeks created was the kingdom of Bactria, which gained independence from the Seleucid Empire. This state became the shining beacon of the civilization in the region and influenced it for centuries to come, most famously by creating a synthesis with one of the Buddhist sects - the Mahayana.

What happened to the Greek settlers in ancient India and Pakistan that have been around the area for at least 2,000 years? Today, we're going to look at the history of the former area of the Macedonian empire under Alexandros III of Macedon, better known to the rest of the world as Alexander the Great.

Michael Alram received the 2016 recipient of the Archer M. Huntington Award in recognition of outstanding career contributions to numismatic scholarship, discusses money, power, and coinage in ancient Bactria and gave the 2016 Silvia Mani Hurter Memorial Lecture entitled “Money and Power in Ancient Bactria.”
Dr. Alram is a distinguished scholar, scientist, researcher and teacher who has been a formidable presence in the numismatic community for the past four decades. Remarkably for such a scholar—and most fittingly for the mission of the American Numismatic Society—he is a rare example of a researcher who has strived throughout his career to bring the study and love of numismatics to a wider audience. He is also an exemplary model of administrative accomplishments, serving in leadership capacities at the Coin Cabinet of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the International Committee of Money and Banking Museums and the International Numismatic Council, where he currently serves as President.
This lecture was delivered on June 8, 2016.

Bactria
Bactria (from Βακτριανή, the Hellenized version of Bactrian βαχλο, Bakhlo; Persian/Pashto: باختر Bākhtar; Uzbek: Балх; Tajik: Бохтар; Chinese: 大夏 Dàxià; Sanskrit बाह्लीक Bāhlika) is the ancient name of a historical region, one of the ancient civilizations of Iranian peoples. Ancient Bactria was located between the Hindu Kush mountain range and the Amu Darya river, covering the flat region that straddles modern-day Afghanistan and Tajikistan.
Bactria was the birthplace of Zoroastrianism, and later also hosted Buddhism before becoming Muslim after the arrival of the Rashidun and the Umayyad Caliphates in the 7th century. Bactria was also sometimes referred to by the Greeks as Bactriana.

Bactria–Margiana Archaeological Complex (BMAC)
The Bactria–Margiana Archaeological Complex (BMAC, also known as the "Oxus civilization") is the modern archaeological designation for a Bronze Age culture of Central Asia, dated to ca. 2200–1700 BC, located in present day eastern Turkmenistan, northern Afghanistan, southern Uzbekistan and western Tajikistan, centered on the upper Amu Darya (Oxus), an area covering ancient Bactria. Its sites were discovered and named by the Soviet archaeologist Viktor Sarianidi (1976). Bactria was the Greek name for Old Persian Bāxtriš (from native *Bāxçiš) (named for its capital Bactra, modern Balkh), in what is now northern Afghanistan, and Margiana was the Greek name for the Persian satrapy of Margu, the capital of which was Merv, in today's Turkmenistan.

The conquests of Alexander the Great and the Wars of his Successors which we covered in our previous animated historical documentaries (http://bit.ly/2BoFtRD) opened Asia to the Greek influence and culture and the process of Hellenization encompassed all regions from Egypt to China. However, the easternmost state the Ancient Greeks created was the kingdom of Bactria, which gained independence from the Seleucid Empire. This state became the shining beacon of the civilization in the region and influenced it for centuries to come, most famously by creating a synthesis with one of the Buddhist sects - the Mahayana.

Huntington Award in recognition of outstanding career contributions to numismatic scholarship, discusses money, power, and coinage in ancient Bactria and gave the 2016 Silvia Mani Hurter Memorial Lecture entitled “Money and Power in Ancient Bactria.”
Dr. Alram is a distinguished scholar, scientist, researcher and teacher who has been a formidable presence in the numismatic community for the past four decades. Remarkably for such a scholar—and most fittingly for the mission of the American Numismatic Society—he is a rare example of a researcher who has strived throughout his career to bring the study and love of numismatics to a wider audience. He is also an exemplary model of administrative accomplishments, serving in leadership capacities at the Coin Cabinet of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the International Committee of Money and Banking Museums and the International Numismatic Council, where he currently serves as President.
This lecture was delivered on June 8, 2016.

The conquests of Alexander the Great and the Wars of his Successors which we covered in our previous animated historical documentaries (http://bit.ly/2BoFtRD) opened Asia to the Greek influence and culture and the process of Hellenization encompassed all regions from Egypt to China. However, the easternmost state the Ancient Greeks created was the kingdom of Bactria, which gained independence from the Seleucid Empire. This state became the shining beacon of the civilization in the region and influenced it for centuries to come, most famously by creating a synthesis with one of the Buddhist sects - the Mahayana.

Today, we're going to look at the history of the former area of the Macedonian empire under Alexandros III of Macedon, better known to the rest of the world as Alexander the Great.

Michael Alram received the 2016 recipient of the Archer M. Huntington Award in recognition of outstanding career contributions to numismatic scholarship, discusses money, power, and coinage in ancient Bactria and gave the 2016 Silvia Mani Hurter Memorial Lecture entitled “Money and Power in Ancient Bactria.”
Dr. Alram is a distinguished scholar, scientist, researcher and teacher who has been a formidable presence in the numismatic community for the past four decades. Remarkably for such a scholar—and most fittingly for the mission of the American Numismatic Society—he is a rare example of a researcher who has strived throughout his career to bring the study and love of numismatics to a wider audience. He is also an exemplary model of administrative accomplishments, serving in leadership capacities at the Coin Cabinet of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the International Committee of Money and Banking Museums and the International Numismatic Council, where he currently serves as President.
This lecture was delivered on June 8, 2016.

Bactria
Bactria (from Βακτριανή, the Hellenized version of Bactrian βαχλο, Bakhlo; Persian/Pashto: باختر Bākhtar; Uzbek: Балх; Tajik: Бохтар; Chinese: 大夏 Dàxià; Sanskrit बाह्लीक Bāhlika) is the ancient name of a historical region, one of the ancient civilizations of Iranian peoples. Ancient Bactria was located between the Hindu Kush mountain range and the Amu Darya river, covering the flat region that straddles modern-day Afghanistan and Tajikistan.
Bactria was the birthplace of Zoroastrianism, and later also hosted Buddhism before becoming Muslim after the arrival of the Rashidun and the Umayyad Caliphates in the 7th century. Bactria was also sometimes referred to by the Greeks as Bactriana.

Bactria–Margiana Archaeological Complex (BMAC)
The Bactria–Margiana Archaeological Complex (BMAC, also known as the "Oxus civilization") is the modern archaeological designation for a Bronze Age culture of Central Asia, dated to ca. 2200–1700 BC, located in present day eastern Turkmenistan, northern Afghanistan, southern Uzbekistan and western Tajikistan, centered on the upper Amu Darya (Oxus), an area covering ancient Bactria. Its sites were discovered and named by the Soviet archaeologist Viktor Sarianidi (1976). Bactria was the Greek name for Old Persian Bāxtriš (from native *Bāxçiš) (named for its capital Bactra, modern Balkh), in what is now northern Afghanistan, and Margiana was the Greek name for the Persian satrapy of Margu, the capital of which was Merv, in today's Turkmenistan.
