The National Consultative Assembly of Iran (Persian: Majles-e Shorâ-ye Eslami, lit. Majles), also called The Iranian Parliament or People's House, is the national legislative body of Iran. The Parliament currently has 290 representatives, changed from the previous 272 seats since the 18 February 2000 election. The recent election took place on 2 March 2012 and the new parliament was opened on 27 May 2012.
It was created by the Iran Constitution of 1906 and first convened on 6 November 1906 (Iranian Calendar: 1285-Mehr-13,), soon gaining power under the rule of the Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Noteworthy bills passed by the Parliament under the Pahlavi Dynasty include the Oil Nationalization Bill (15 March 1951) and the Family Protection Law (1967), which gave women many basic rights such as custody of children in the case of divorce.
Women were not allowed to vote or be elected to the Parliament until 1963, as part of reforms under the Shah's "White Revolution". The reforms were regarded as dangerous, Westernizing trends by traditionalists, especially by the powerful Shia religious leaders, including Ayatollah Khomeini. The events led to a revolt on 5 June 1963 and the exile of Khomeini to Iraq. The twenty-first National Consultative Assembly, which included female representatives, opened on 6 October 1963.
Iran (i/ɪˈrɑːn/ or /aɪˈræn/;Persian: ایران [ʔiˈɾɒn] (listen)), officially the Islamic Republic of Iran (Persian: جمهوری اسلامی ایران Jomhuri-ye Eslāmi-ye Irān), is a country in Southern and Western Asia. The name "Iran", which in Persian means "Land of the Aryans", has been in use natively since the Sassanian era. It came into use internationally in 1935, before which the country was known to the Western world as Persia (/ˈpɜrʒə/ or /ˈpɜrʃə/). Both "Persia" and "Iran" are used interchangeably in cultural contexts; however, "Iran" is the name used officially in political contexts.
The 18th-largest country in the world in terms of area at 1,648,195 km2 (636,372 sq mi), Iran has a population of around 79 million. It is a country of particular geopolitical significance owing to its location in the Middle East and central Eurasia. Iran is bordered on the north by Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. As Iran is a littoral state of the Caspian Sea, which is an inland sea, Kazakhstan and Russia are also Iran's direct neighbors to the north. Iran is bordered on the east by Afghanistan and Pakistan, on the south by the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, on the west by Iraq and on the northwest by Turkey. Tehran is the capital, the country's largest city and the political, cultural, commercial and industrial center of the nation. Iran is a regional power, and holds an important position in international energy security and world economy as a result of its large reserves of petroleum and natural gas. Iran has the second largest proven natural gas reserves in the world and the fourth largest proven petroleum reserves.

The three month struggle by the Iranian government to replace its fallen science minister finally came to an end as MPs voted “YES” to President Hassan Rouhani’s last nominee, as Iran’s minister of science research and technology. This was the fifth time that President Rouhani attended the Parliament to defend his proposed science minister, since he took office on August 2013. The vote of confidence to Mohammad Farhadi was a hit for a government whose previous nominees for the post were either rejected or dismissed by MPs, amid concerns over political polarization of Iran’s academic atmosphere.

Speaker for Iran's Parliament suggested the idea of prisoner swap for jailed Washington Post jour…
The Islamic Republic's top nuclear negotiator was quoted as saying on Saturday that Iran's parliament does not have authority over the nuclear agreement signed with world powers last month.
The comments from Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of Iran's atomic energy agency, are the latest volley in a lengthy battle between Iranian officials supportive of the deal, and hardliners who are skeptical of it.
The conservative-dominated parliament in June passed a bill imposing strict conditions on any nuclear deal, such as barring international inspectors from Iran's military sites.
Under the terms of the final deal, however, Iran must provide access to suspect sites including at its military facilities within 24 days, or risk sanctions being reimposed.
Iran nuclear deal reached with six world powers on July 14 imposes strict limits on its nuclear program in exchange for relief from international sanctions, breaking decades of mounting hostility with the West.

Iran's government: Parliament nuclear bill violates constitution
Government Spokesperson, Mohammad Bagher Nobakht, noted that based on the Constitution, the Supreme National Security Council is the only body which can make pronouncements on nuclear negotiations between Iran and P-five-plus-one countries. He added that the issue of negotiations is not in the area of responsibility of neither the government nor the parliament. Nobakht also thanked the lawmakers for supporting the Iranian negotiating team, and gave assurances that the government will present a report on the nuclear talks to the parliament in due time.

The Chairman of Russia's parliament said on Monday that the country shares a common stance with Iran, and described Western sanctions as "an instrument for the West's political, economic and media propaganda."
The Western sanctions "have no value from the international point of view," Sergei Naryshkin added.
A high-ranking Russian parliamentary delegation met with the chairman of Iran's Islamic Parliament and Iranian lawmakers in Tehran.
Naryshkin said the purpose of the trip to Iran was to further bolster the friendly ties between the two countries in all areas.
He also expressed Russia's readiness to work with oil producing countries, including Iran, to reduce the economic consequences of falling oil prices.
Iran's nuclear programme, terrorism, instability in Iraq and Syria, and the conflict in Ukraine were also on the agenda of the negotiations.

Iran's parliament has approved a deal on its nuclear programme agreed with six world powers, state media say.
The deal was passed with 161 votes in favour, 59 against and 13 abstentions, the official IRNA news agency said.
However, parliament insisted that international inspectors would have only limited access to military sites.
The agreement, struck in July, authorises the lifting of sanctions in return for Iran curbing sensitive nuclear activities.

PM Visits Bombing Site
Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has visited the site of the double bombing in the capital Ankara on Saturday. The attack happened just before a peace rally and killed at least 97 people and injured at least 500. Davutoglu has announced that ISIS is the main suspect. He says the attack targeted Turkey’s democracy and peace. It was the most deadly of its kind in modern Turkish history.
Parliament Approves Nuclear Deal
State media reports that Iran’s parliament has passed a bill backing the deal limiting the country’s nuclear programme. President Hassan Rouhani’s government reached an agreement with six world powers in July. It aims to limit Iran’s nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions being lifted. But parliament insists Iran should supervise international inspections of nuclear sites.
Violence in Jerusalem
Israeli police say there were four separate stabbing attacks across Jerusalem on Monday. Police shot dead two Palestinians they accused of injuring Israelis. Violence has increased in Israel and occupied Palestine since the beginning of the month. The Israeli government has continued to build illegal Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank. The Palestinian Authority’s Ministry of Health says Israeli forces have killed at least 27 Palestinians and injured 1,990 since October 3rd. Palestinians have killed four Israelis and injured at least 67.
Protests in Pristina
Police have used tear gas to disperse at least 200 people demonstrating against the arrest of an opposition lawmaker. Authorities arrested Albin Kurti last week after HE used tear gas in parliament. He was later released. Kurti was protesting against a deal between Kosovo and Serbia. It would give minority Serbs in Kosovo more local power. Belgrade doesn’t recognise Kosovo. It declared independence from Serbia in 2008, as a sovereign state.

False Alarm at Ankara Bomb Site
Police found what they called a suspicious package at the site of the double bombings in Ankara. But they conducted a controlled explosion and it turned out to be a false alarm. Earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu visited the site to pay his respects. The bombs went off just before a peace rally. They killed at least 97 people and injured nearly 500 others. Davutoglu has announced that ISIS is the main suspect. It was the most fatal attack of its kind in modern Turkish history.
Jerusalem Bus Attack
Gunmen in Jerusalem have reportedly opened fire on a bus and stabbed some passengers inside. Medical sources say they wounded 18 people. Police say they “shot and neutralised” two attackers inside the vehicle. Violence has increased in Israel and the occupied territories since the beginning of the month. The Israeli government has continued to build illegal Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank. The Palestinian Ministry of Health says Israeli forces have killed at least 27 Palestinians and injured 1,990 others since October 3rd. El Nino Could Ease Drought
Forecasters say this year’s El Nino may cause a weather pattern that could be as strong as the one in the late 1990s. El Nino happens when waters in the Pacific Ocean warm and create extreme weather conditions. A scientist at NASA says the storms that El Nino could bring this year would help ease the drought in the US state of California. But he also warned it could be dangerous. In 1997 and 98, the storms caused damaging weather conditions in the state and killed 17 people.

The Iranian parliament Sunday passed the framework of an agenda to allow the government to honor the nuclear agreement reached by Iran and the six powers with additional conditions.
Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani announced that the agenda was passed with 139 votes in favor, 100 in rejection and 12 abstentions.
The agreement was reached between Iran and the six powers on the basis of cooperation and mutual respect, and any threatening activities or pressure against Iran will force the nation to review the cooperation, according to the agenda.
Should the other side violates the agreement, especially over the articles on sanctions against Iran, the Iranian government will stop implementing the agreement, and take measures to safeguard the nation’s right, the agenda stipulates.
The agenda also requests the Iranian government to take every measure to protect Iran’s military and security secrets and prohibits the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to check Iran’s military facilities in the name of honoring the agreement.
The parliament members for and against the agenda had fierce arguments over the agenda and the situation was in chaos for a while.
“Just now, a brother came to me and said that he swore to Allah that he would kill me and bury me in the cement. Is that the manner that the Islamic Republic of Iran should have? Is that moral? Can you speak in that way to bury one person in cement, the cement of Arak heavy water reactor?” said Ali Akbar Salehi, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran.
Hardline parliament members have tried to delay the passing of the agenda, and Ali Hoseini Khamenei has not taken a clear stand.
“I voted in rejection because I think the agreement will pose serious threats to our national security, and will cause infiltration of our enemies into our economic sectors inclding industry, manufacturing and agriculture,” said Naghavi Hosseini, spokesman for the Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Commission.
However, the parliament members for the agenda said that it will pave the road for implementing the agreement and help improve Iran’s international environment.
“Think about it, if we reject the agreement, where on earth do we want to go? How on earth will we deal with the nuclear issue? The opposition said they do not want to pass the agreement, so have you heard they have any plans? Where do they want to lead us to?” said parliament member Pezeshkian.
The parliament will further examine the details of the agenda and publicize the result in the near future.

Iran parliament passes general outlines of motion on nuclear deal with P5+1
Iran’s parliament has passed the general outlines of a motion that gives the go-ahead to the government for the conditional implementation of the nuclear agreement with the P5+1 countries.
The lawmakers approved the urgent motion following hours of heated debate. Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his deputies along with Iran's nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi attended the open session of parliament. On Tuesday, the legislature will discuss the details of the bill which stipulates that the nuclear agreement should be enforced on a voluntary basis. Based on the motion, the government should stop all its voluntary activities in case the six-member panel violates the terms of the agreement. In June, Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany agreed on a joint comprehensive plan of action over Tehran’ nuclear energy program.

Ezekiel 25:17 And *I will execute great vengeance upon them with furious rebukes*; and *they shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall lay my vengeance upon them*.
15 Thus saith the Lord God; Because the Philistines have dealt by revenge, and have taken vengeance with a despiteful heart, to destroy it for the old hatred;
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will stretch out mine hand upon the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethims, and destroy the remnant of the sea coast.
17 And I will execute great vengeance upon them with furious rebukes; and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall lay my vengeance upon them.
1 The word of the Lord came again unto me, saying,
2 Son of man, set thy face against the Ammonites, and prophesy against them;
3 And say unto the Ammonites, Hear the word of the Lord God; Thus saith the Lord God; Because thou saidst, Aha, against my sanctuary, when it was profaned; and against the land of Israel, when it was desolate; and against the house of Judah, when they went into captivity;
4 Behold, therefore I will deliver thee to the men of the east for a possession, and they shall set their palaces in thee, and make their dwellings in thee: they shall eat thy fruit, and they shall drink thy milk.
5 And I will make Rabbah a stable for camels, and the Ammonites a couching place for flocks: and ye shall know that I am the Lord.
6 For thus saith the Lord God; Because thou hast clapped thine hands, and stamped with the feet, and rejoiced in heart with all thy despite against the land of Israel;
7 Behold, therefore I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and will deliver thee for a spoil to the heathen; and I will cut thee off from the people, and I will cause thee to perish out of the countries: I will destroy thee; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord.
8 Thus saith the Lord God; Because that Moab and Seir do say, Behold, the house of Judah is like unto all the heathen;
9 Therefore, behold, I will open the side of Moab from the cities, from his cities which are on his frontiers, the glory of the country, Bethjeshimoth, Baalmeon, and Kiriathaim,
10 Unto the men of the east with the Ammonites, and will give them in possession, that the Ammonites may not be remembered among the nations.
11 And I will execute judgments upon Moab; and they shall know that I am the Lord.
12 Thus saith the Lord God; Because that Edom hath dealt against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and hath greatly offended, and revenged himself upon them;
13 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; I will also stretch out mine hand upon Edom, and will cut off man and beast from it; and I will make it desolate from Teman; and they of Dedan shall fall by the sword.
14 And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom by the hand of my people Israel: and they shall do in Edom according to mine anger and according to my fury; and they shall know my vengeance, saith the Lord God.
15 Thus saith the Lord God; Because the Philistines have dealt by revenge, and have taken vengeance with a despiteful heart, to destroy it for the old hatred;

In a statement, the parliamentarians demanded the mission include all the countries that have lost their citizens in the tragedy. The Iranian MPs, also called on the country's judiciary to follow up the case in international rights organizations in order to hold those behind the deadly incident accountable. They blamed the Mina incident on Saudi officials' mismanagement and incompetency. The lawmakers also slammed Al Saud dynasty for playing the blame game instead of accepting responsibility. Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani has said that reports suggest the Saudi government is to blame for the tragedy. He said Saudi officials had not adopted the required measures to cope with such a tragic event.

Ali Larijani expects heated debate on country’s nuclear conclusion
Iran’s parliament speaker predicts a heated debate among Iranian lawmakers before voting on the country’s nuclear conclusion with the P5+1.
Ali Larijani says the debate could be more dramatic than that which is taking place at US Congress. He stressed that the agreement must be approved by the Iranian parliament. The speaker said a 15-member parliamentary committee is examining the legality of the deal. Larijani said the Parliament will have to make a decision in about a month. Tehran and the P-five-plus-one finalized the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action over the Iranian nuclear program in Vienna on July 14. Under the agreement, Iran is to limit its nuclear activities in exchange for the removal of all economic and financial sanctions.

American and Iranian scholars talked about the new Parliament in Iran and its implications for U.S.-Iran relations. Elections had brought reform-minded legislators to the Parliament, but hard-line Islamic Fundamentalists still maintained control of the government, tempering any general reform movement. The Clinton administration was seeking to normalize relations with Iran, including the return of funds seized following the 1979 revolution there.

Mr. President, please be here at 8 am sharp; tomorrow's meeting has not been cancelled. That was the message the Iranian parliament gave Mr. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on the 13th of March 2012.
11 of the 79 MPs who drew up the questions for the president took back their signatures in the 11th hour. In the days leading up to the questioning, the parliament's pro-Ahmadinejad members said they wouldn't be at the meeting, hoping to delegitimize the proceedings.
At 8 am on the 14th of March 90 chairs stood empty. That was enough for a point to be made, but not enough to derail the meeting. This was the parliament's 12th attempt to make this happen.
All previous attempts failed for various reasons. One reason why some say the president shouldn't face questioning is because it would be the first time the parliament has summoned any president for this reason.
Ahmadinejad is known for many things. Among his fans he's a man of the people, who has served the nation well. During his two terms he's traveled the length of breadth of the country, helping deprived areas and gaining a lot of support consequently. Some say such a president, shouldn't be the first to be questioned by parliament in this way.
But not all Ahmadinejad's actions have been hailed by all and sundry. His financial decisions and his behavior on the political scene have caused outcry in parliament, the home of the people's representatives. The fact that a principlist president, is being called into question by a predominantly principlist parliament speaks volumes in itself.
On the 14th of March, the president entered the parliament for questioning, along with 8 of his cabinet ministers. His answers, if deemed unsatisfactory, could lead to his impeachment.
In this edition of the show we'll be telling you what transpired in that question session.

STORYLINE
Iranian lawmakers on Sunday impeached the country's labour minister over his controversial appointment of an official implicated in the deaths of prisoners.
The development is part of a power struggle between President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his conservative rivals in parliament.
Out of 272 lawmakers in the parliament on Sunday, 192 voted against the labour minister, Abdolreza Sheikholeslami.
The lawmakers are angry over the labour minister's decision to appoint Saeed Mortazavi as head of Iran's social security organisation.
Larijani denied the charge saying he has no business relation with his brother.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani has stressed Tehran’s support for the Syrian government, describing the situation in the Arab country as extraordinary.
Larijani made the remarks in a meeting with Syrian health minister Nizar Yaziji in Tehran. Referring to the large numbers of Syrian civilians who have lost their lives in the conflict, Larijani said Iran will spare no efforts to continue helping Syria. He also said he is hopeful Damascus defeats the terrorist groups soon. The Syrian health minister, for his part, thanked Iran’s support for the Syrian people during the crisis. Yaziji also called for more cooperation in health and medical fields between the two countries.

Ali Larijani made the comments during a meeting with the Secretary General of the People's Front for the Liberation of Palestine in Tehran. Larijani condemned Israel’s terrorist attack in the Qunaytarah region.

Iran insists that its nuclear programme is entirely peaceful.
The UN Security Council passed seven resolutions between 2006 and 2015 requiring Iran to stop producing enriched uranium - which can be used for civilian purposes, but also to build nuclear bombs.
Four of the resolutions imposed sanctions in an effort to persuade Iran to comply.

And since then, Palestinians have killed four Israelis and injured at least 67.

Iran Passes Agenda to Honor Nuclear Agreement

Iran’s parliament speaker Ali Larijani says the idea of creating Israel was part of the West’s larger plan to cause divisions among Muslim nations..
Addressing worshippers at Tehran Friday Prayers, Larijani noted that Israel owes its survival to quote- the weakness and corruption of some Arab states and rivalries among them. He said Iran’s Islamic Revolution inspired Muslim states to fight Israel. The Iranian parliament speaker also spoke of the issue of terrorism. He said Takfiri terrorists demonize Islam and the West supports them to take revenge on Islam by tarnishing its image. Touching on the nuclear talks between Iran and P5+1 group of countries in Vienna, Larijani said the negotiations are a major test for Western governments. He added that a failure of nuclear talks would be a strategic mistake and wouldn’t benefit the West’s interests.
