How To Vote for the Climate

VOTING SUGGESTIONS FOR DAREBIN COUNCIL ELECTION

By now you will have received your ballot paper for the Darebin Council Elections. However with over 15 candidates in each ward, many of them unknowns, some of them ‘dummy’ candidates, how can voters choose who to support? We believe actions speak louder than words. Our independent how-to-vote recommendations are based on the actions of candidates not just their 150 word statement – click the pictures below to review our analysis!

As you will have read in our previous newlsetter, DarebinCAN has worked as part of the Darebin Community Network to send questionnaires to candidates and to collate their responses into a scorecard on views and action on:

  • climate change, sustainability, appropriate development, accessibility, responsiveness and,
  • the candidate’s preference allocation has also been noted for consistency with the candidate’s policies.

These scorecards were sent to you in our last newlsetter. Thanks to our willing letterboxinger’s this has gone to 22,000 households in Darebin.

Here below are the candidates we listed on the scorecards for Rucker and Cazaly wards – and we have now added suggestions about how to vote.

Don’t forget to fill in your voting paper asap to make sure it is returned in time to count by October 26.

Darebin Council Election 2012 – candidate score card

Candidate score card

As you probably know there have been some very troubling recent times in Darebin Council with regard to climate change, development, accountability and responsibility.

  • The Council voted to discontinue Darebin’s membership of the Northern Alliance for Greenhouse Action (NAGA) depriving residents of more than $1.5 million in practical help to reduce their greenhouse emissions and their power bills.  More here
  • Many residents have been disturbed by Council deciding in favour of inappropriate development counter to Council policy. More here 
  • Council decision making and possible State and Federal political interference on planning and grants has been referred for investigation by the State Government Ombusdman. More here

In this context the Darebin Community Network was formed by several local community groups to help the community make informed decisions about their vote in the upcoming elections.

DCAN has been an active member and we hope you will consider climate change a key factor in your vote.

Candidates have been sent a questionnaire on their attitudes and active history on climate change, appropriate development, accountability and responsiveness.

Letter boxing the score cards – can you help?

CAN YOU HELP PLEASE TO LETTERBOX THE LEAFLETS – some time between Saturday 6th and Wednesday 10th. Postal voting starts on October 10.

We would like you to pick up the leaflets about noon tomorrow (Saturday 6th) from 12 Auburn Grove Northcote –  so please let us know if this time is not possible so other arrangements can be made. We would be very grateful – but so will the residents of Darebin overwhelmed with candidates!

Ride to work day

Ride to work day – time to get fit and get a pancake!

Hi DCAN members – get on that bike and get riding to work, and to help you along the way there’s a free organic coffee and pancake to get that energy into those pumping legs. Save the environment, have pancakes – sounds good to me!

Their response to the questionaires have been collated in to a printed guide for voters – and this needs to be letterboxed to voters in Rucker and Kazaly Wards – this weekend.
