Get ready for hilarity, because this week, we're diving head first into Greek Comedy. Actually, though, maybe don't get TOO ready for hilarity. Taste in humor has changed a little over the last couple of thousand years. You already know about Greek Tragedies, with their hamartia and catharsis and whatnot. Today we're going to look at how Greek comedy evolved out of those tragedies, first as Satyr plays, and later as full-blown comedies. So come along. There are a few laughs involved, I promise.

In Aristophanes’s classic play Lysistrata, the heroine of the title leads the women of the warring Athens and Sparta in a sex strike, hoping to persuade their husbands to sue for peace.
Though the effect is comic, with the stymied men of Greece ultimately caving to the demands of their wives, the action reflects a more sober reality. The Peloponnesian War was a savage, three decade conflict between two factions of Greek city-states vying for dominance of the region.
Written in the latter half of the conflict, the play's comic relief would have been especially welcome in the playwright's home of Athens, which ultimately lost the conflict.
Greek comedic and satirical writer Aristophanes created Lysistrata, which was first performed in 411 BCE, only 7 years after the Peloponnesian War ended. It is considered by some to be his best play. Aristophanes’s works often criticized the statesmen who drove Athens into the war with Sparta. His witty plays still resonate with audiences today.
The play contains many powerful themes such as determination, femininity vs. masculinity, and civil disobedience. Other symbols include the Acropolis, staffs, and bowls & wine.

Aristophanes
Aristophanes (/ˌærᵻˈstɒfəniːz/ or /ˌɛrᵻˈstɒfəniːz/;Greek: Ἀριστοφάνης, pronounced [aristopʰánɛːs]; c. 446 – c. 386 BC), son of Philippus, of the deme Cydathenaeum, was a comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his thirty plays survive virtually complete. These, together with fragments of some of his other plays, provide the only real examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy, and they are used to define the genre.
Also known as the Father of Comedy and the Prince of Ancient Comedy, Aristophanes has been said to recreate the life of ancient Athens more convincingly than any other author. His powers of ridicule were feared and acknowledged by influential contemporaries; Plato singled out Aristophanes' play The Clouds as slander that contributed to the trial and subsequent condemning to death of Socrates although other satirical playwrights had also caricatured the philosopher.
His second play, The Babylonians (now lost), was denounced by the demagogue Cleon as a slander against the Athenian polis. It is possible that the case was argued in court but details of the trial are not recorded and Aristophanes caricatured Cleon mercilessly in his subsequent plays, especially The Knights, the first of many plays that he directed himself. "In my opinion," he says through the Chorus in that play, "the author-director of comedies has the hardest job of all." (κωμῳδοδιδασκαλίαν εἶναι χαλεπώτατον ἔργον ἁπάντων)

Crux (comics)
Crux is an American comic book published by CrossGen Entertainment from May 2001 to February 2004. It was cancelled due to bankruptcy in 2004. Crux was one of the later titles that came first in a sort of second wave of Crossgen titles which included Sojourn and Brath. It detailed the exploits of six Atlanteans who were put into stasis and are awoken 100, 000 years later.
Plot synopsis
The main story arc centered on Capricia and the other Atlanteans efforts to revive the remaining Atlanteans still in stasis and to find out what happened to the human race, and perhaps to a latter extent how to go through 'transition' themselves. The group go through a series of battles with Negation forces who eventually attempt a full-scale invasion of Earth.
During this time the group come across Australia hidden from the outside world due to a gigantic tachyon supercollider and find a 'transition' portal with humans getting ready to go through. They are attacked by a Negation squad leaving Tug blind for a time. Tug and Verityn then come across a 100,000-year-old Atlantean named Aristophanes, a legend they had heard stories about as children. The group also feels the loss of Gammid to the Negation Universe via 'transition' portal which was meant to lead him and the remaining humans found in Australia to a "higher plane of existence" but instead takes them to the Negation Universe.

Aristophanes (vase painter)
Aristophanes (Greek: Ἀριστοφάνης; active between 430 and 400 BC in Athens) was an ancient Greek vase painter of the Attic red-figure style. Three pieces signed by him are known. Two of them are bowls made by the potter Erginos, now in Berlin (Antikensammlung Berlin) and Boston (Museum of Fine Arts), the third is the fragment of a krater in Agrigento (Museo Archeologico Regionale). A number of further works are attributed to him. Aristophanes strove to make his figures appear as lively as possible. His paintings are characterised by carefully drawn separate lines. In some cases, the drawing of garment folds or women's hair leads to a somewhat artificial impression.

Aristophanes, often referred to as the Father of Comedy, wrote the world’s earliest surviving comic dramas. They're stuffed full of parodies, songs, sexual jokes and surreal fantasy -- and they’ve shaped how comedy’s been written and performed ever since. Mark Robinson shares a brief history of Aristophanes.

In Aristophanes’s classic play Lysistrata, the heroine of the title leads the women of the warring Athens and Sparta in a sex strike, hoping to persuade their husbands to sue for peace.
Though the effect is comic, with the stymied men of Greece ultimately caving to the demands of their wives, the action reflects a more sober reality. The Peloponnesian War was a savage, three decade conflict between two factions of Greek city-states vying for dominance of the region.
Written in the latter half of the conflict, the play's comic relief would have been especially welcome in the playwright's home of Athens, which ultimately lost the conflict.
Greek comedic and satirical writer Aristophanes created Lysistrata, which was first performed in 411 BCE, only 7 years after the Peloponnesian War ended. It is considered by some to be his best play. Aristophanes’s works often criticized the statesmen who drove Athens into the war with Sparta. His witty plays still resonate with audiences today.
The play contains many powerful themes such as determination, femininity vs. masculinity, and civil disobedience. Other symbols include the Acropolis, staffs, and bowls & wine.

In Aristophanes’s classic play Lysistrata, the heroine of the title leads the women of the warring Athens and Sparta in a sex strike, hoping to persuade their husbands to sue for peace.
Though the effect is comic, with the stymied men of Greece ultimately caving to the demands of their wives, the action reflects a more sober reality. The Peloponnesian War was a savage, three decade conflict between two factions of Greek city-states vying for dominance of the region.
Written in the latter half of the conflict, the play's comic relief would have been especially welcome in the playwright's home of Athens, which ultimately lost the conflict.
Greek comedic and satirical writer Aristophanes created Lysistrata, which was first performed in 411 BCE, only 7 years after the Peloponnesian War ended. It is considered by some to be his best play. Aristophanes’s works often criticized the statesmen who drove Athens into the war with Sparta. His witty plays still resonate with audiences today.
The play contains many powerful themes such as determination, femininity vs. masculinity, and civil disobedience. Other symbols include the Acropolis, staffs, and bowls & wine.

Aristophanes
Aristophanes (/ˌærᵻˈstɒfəniːz/ or /ˌɛrᵻˈstɒfəniːz/;Greek: Ἀριστοφάνης, pronounced [aristopʰánɛːs]; c. 446 – c. 386 BC), son of Philippus, of the deme Cydathenaeum, was a comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his thirty plays survive virtually complete. These, together with fragments of some of his other plays, provide the only real examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy, and they are used to define the genre.
Also known as the Father of Comedy and the Prince of Ancient Comedy, Aristophanes has been said to recreate the life of ancient Athens more convincingly than any other author. His powers of ridicule were feared and acknowledged by influential contemporaries; Plato singled out Aristophanes' play The Clouds as slander that contributed to the trial and subsequent condemning to death of Socrates although other satirical playwrights had also caricatured the philosopher.
His second play, The Babylonians (now lost), was denounced by the demagogue Cleon as a slander against the Athenian polis. It is possible that the case was argued in court but details of the trial are not recorded and Aristophanes caricatured Cleon mercilessly in his subsequent plays, especially The Knights, the first of many plays that he directed himself. "In my opinion," he says through the Chorus in that play, "the author-director of comedies has the hardest job of all." (κωμῳδοδιδασκαλίαν εἶναι χαλεπώτατον ἔργον ἁπάντων)
