Instrumentalism is one of a multitude of modern schools of thought created by scientists and philosophers throughout the 20th century. Its premises and practices were most clearly and persuasively stated by two philosophers—John Dewey and Karl Popper. Independently, they defined the school quite similarly, but their judgments of it were irreconcilable.
Dewey was a practitioner of instrumentalism who, while fearing that the name was easily misunderstood, adopted it for his modernization of tools of induction and his denial of reality behind experience. Popper was a critic who judged its insistence on induction and its denial of reality behind experience to be hopelessly flawed. These contrary judgments endowed the school with the legacy of confusion and ambiguity described below.

Moral Foundations of Politics (PLSC 118)
In addition to the traditionalist-conservative view covered last time, the other anti-Enlightenment school the course explores is contemporary communitarianism. While Burke and Devlin appealed to tradition as the basis for our values, communitarians appeal to the community-accepted values as the basis for what should guide us. Communitarian Richard Rorty criticizes the Enlightenment endeavor of justifying philosophy from the ground up from indubitable premises as a fool's errand and a dangerous mug's game. The main focus of today's class is the communitarianism of Alasdair MacIntyre. Professor Shapiro introduces this school by exploring the symptoms of the problem wrought by the Enlightenment. One is the rise of emotivism and complete moral subjectivism; that is, the abandonment of the instruments for making moral judgments as a consequence of trying to justify philosophy from the ground up. The second symptom is the triumph of instrumentalism and the rejection of teleology, which is actually a coping mechanism for society's deep pluralism of values. Professor Shapiro discusses MacIntyre's two symptoms, as well as introduces his conceptions of practices and virtues.

wn.com/20. Contemporary Communitarianism (I)
Moral Foundations of Politics (PLSC 118)
Do we need to rethink our approach to civic capacity-building and to the delivery of health and social care?
The RSA is leading the way in imagining what a ‘human welfare economy’ might look like: one in which our social and economic systems and services offer everyone a fair chance at a flourishing and fulfilling life.
Health and wellbeing are key components of the good life well lived, and the RSA has recently completed a 5-year action research study - Connected Communities - which makes the case for greater investment in community capital, arguing that vibrant, connected communities with strong ties and high levels of trust and participation are not only critical to building the kind of society that we'd all like to live in, but can also be mobilised to bring about better individual health outcomes.
We argue that creating stronger communities should, therefore, be a strategic health priority – resulting in services that are built ‘with, not for’ people. And though we can show that a commitment to enhancing community capital does bring about ‘return on investment’, our argument goes beyond instrumentalism; we maintain that we should work on the assumption that connected communities are a good in themselves – and that a good society shouldn’t need a data set to underpin such a belief.
We also recognise that community capital, like financial capital, is unevenly distributed, and so we are interested in better understanding the kinds of services and support networks that need to be developed to help challenge inequalities of health and wellbeing.
So, if we are to fully unleash the power of community to create better health and wellbeing for all, what might this mean for current and future approaches to civic capacity-building and to the delivery of health and social care?

"...What makes the album genuinely remarkable, even among the Art Ensemble's complete output, is the Mitchell composition titled Song for Charles (a dedication to Charles Clark, the talented Young AACM bassist who died in Chicago just nine weeks before this recording). If anything can be said to be "typical" of the group at its best, then this lengthy and complex group improvisation deserves such a description. The multi-instrumentalism creates a constantly shifting surface, yet care is taken to provide thoughtful and logical contexts for the improvisations-notably the central solo by Bowie, which is among his starkest and loveliest recorded improvisations. In other hands the bird-calls and the shouts and the bass sax would sound absurd, but the quartet exploit them with discretion and unfailing aptness"

*Jazzy piano loops, afrobeat percussion, breakbeat exoticism, and bounce make up Drew Dave "SynthBASED," an instrumental ride. Residing in the crux of vintage and modern techniques is Drew Dave, who's faithful to the soul that lives in his hardware, but maintains forward vision for live instrumentation and midi-synths on his latest project. Drew Dave has doodled over the orginal syllabi of Hiphop instrumentalism, creating ornate embellishments of prerequisite texts. Drew Dave's aspirations for musicality over straight beats, his the ability to deliver bangers that loop gravelly roars, and his smooth crisp production lead listeners on a rhapsodic journey. Drew Dave on "SynthBASED"
"SynthBASED is a concept album. It's a soul, kind of jazzy, with some electronic elements, kind of album, w/ the common denominator being that every single track utilizes a synth bass. The synth saw bass to be specific. The title derives from that, with the "BASED" just being a play on "bass" and Lil B's "Based God" ideology. For me, this album has really been the 1st honest attempt, and definitely the beginning, of me really stepping outside of solely sampling. I played with melodies and incorporated live instrumentation and percussion. I played out every bassline, did some slight stuff on the keys, and laid subtle harmonies. And then I had my good friend Drew Kid play some additional melodies and chords throughout the album. Then another dope producer, Charlie Ross from Soular Heights, did the live drums on "FullCircle." So it was definitely me using my resources to make the album as complete as I could. From turning instrumental from just beats, into actual compositions."

Summary:
San Diego-based Delta Spirit is as unconventional an indie-rock band as they come. The group improvises instruments like trash cans lids and orchestral bass drums, multi-instrumentalism and spiritually themed lyrics to create a most engaging and festive hybrid of rock and northern soul. Jon Jameson (bass), Brandon Young (percussion) discovered vocalist Matthew Vasquez (vocals/guitars) busking one day in 2005, and together with Kelly Winrich formed Delta Spirit, one of the most active live performance bands around.

About Ssighborggg (KR)
South Korea-based, US-born Sighborg (often spelled with varying letters. e.g. sssighborgg, siiighborg) is a two-man outfit that features Indie electronica pieced together with live drums, guitar and keyboard. Fans of Battles, Boards of Canada and Don Caballero will appreciate and recognise their influences. The total mix is heavy with math rock and chiptune, driven tightly through multi-instrumentalism and polyrhythms between the duo like a competition between electronics and live instruments. The band has toured Asia plentifully, and was described by Smart Shanghai as "Nintendo-ey, a bit math-ey, a bit Aphex Twin-ey and quite neat-o-ey". The band has played as support for Caribou, Gold Panda, The Dodos, Nosaj Thing, No Age, YACHT, Zach Hill and Xiu Xiu.

"The Politics of Immigration and a Catholic Counternarrative"
Presented by Kristin Heyer, Ph.D.
Gorecki Conference Center 204
The College of Saint Benedict
October 6th, 2014
The United States remains the world's leading destination for immigrants, and across new regions, U.S. residents are increasingly confronted with newcomers. In some quarters, reactions reflect the nation's historic openness to immigrants, in others, its deep ambivalence about "outsiders." As immigration debates continue to simmer, the national conversation too often remains characterized by political posturing and fear-based rhetoric that pits the interests of different constituencies against one another. The realities shaping undocumented immigration remain complex, yet the voices of migrants rarely register in national debates about border control policy or work visa quotas. Kristin Heyer, author of Kinship Across Borders: A Christian Ethic of Immigration, will offer an overview of immigration paradigms and explore the resources the Catholic intellectual tradition brings to bear on this pressing moral issue. In contrast to dominant immigration 'scripts' framing the issue in terms of economic instrumentalism or fixed national identity, Catholic commitments shape a different story, a (counter)narrative of our common humanity, our kinship, with implications for a just immigration ethic. Given her expertise in gendered dimensions of immigration rooted in formative experiences with deported women and mixed-status families, Dr. Heyer will highlight the threats particular to migrant women and families as well as their contributions.
Kristin E. Heyer serves as Bernard J. Hanley Professor of Religious Studies at Santa Clara University. She received her B.A. from Brown University and her Ph.D. in theological ethics from Boston College in 2003. Her books include Kinship Across Borders: A Christian Ethic of Immigration (2012); Prophetic and Public: the Social Witness of U.S. Catholicism (2006), which won the College Theology Society's "Best Book Award," and the edited volume Catholics and Politics: Dynamic Tensions between Faith and Power (2008), all with Georgetown University Press. Her articles have appeared in Theological Studies, The Journal of Catholic Social Thought, The Journal of Peace and Justice Studies, Political Theology and America. She serves on the boards of Catholic Theological Ethics in the World Church and the Seminar on Jesuit Higher Education, and she is an editor for Georgetown University Press' Moral Traditions series.

A series of experimental sound project
Project#1: DURATION
Workshop 1 : Robert Piotrowicz
Title : Why instrument is everything?
Focusing on the role of electronic instrument alongside its application in composition, the workshop will explore the analogue modular synthesizer as a key to drive duration of a piece in electronic music. Since the birth of first electronic instruments, we continue to witness their ongoing development and definition. Key to this process has been the personal engagement of a musician, who through mastering one's own techniques and intimate knowledge of the instrument shapes his individual voice and achieves a skillset required both in studio composition and live improvisation. From the perspective of instrumentalism engaging in time, Robert Piotrowicz will address some aspects related to his live performance and composing practice, explaining why instrument, in this case analogue modular synthesizer, is everything.
