Ben-Hur es una película estadounidense de 1959 de los géneros épico y dramático ambientada mayormente en la provincia romana de Judea en tiempos del emperador Tiberio.
Fue dirigida por William Wyler y producida por Sam Zimbalist para Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Sus papeles principales los interpretan Charlton Heston, Stephen Boyd, Jack Hawkins, Hugh Griffith y Haya Harareet. Adaptación de la película muda del mismo título de 1925, Ben-Hur se basaba en la novela homónima escrita por Lewis Wallace en 1880.
El guion lo firma Karl Tunberg, aunque el libreto incluye aportaciones de Maxwell Anderson, S. N. Behrman, Gore Vidal y Christopher Fry.
Ben-Hur contó con el mayor presupuesto que hasta entonces había tenido una película, superior a los quince millones de dólares estadounidenses, y para su filmación se construyeron los decorados más grandes jamás empleados en un filme.
La diseñadora Elizabeth Haffenden supervisó a un equipo de cien costureras para crear el vestuario y en la construcción de los decorados intervinieron doscientos artistas y obreros, necesarios para crear cientos de frisos y estatuas.
La filmación comenzó el 18 de mayo de 1958 y duró hasta el 7 de enero de 1959, con jornadas de rodaje de entre doce y catorce horas que se desarrollaron seis días a la semana.
La preproducción comenzó en los estudios Cinecittà de Roma en octubre de 1957 y la posproducción se extendió seis meses.
Los directivos de MGM encargaron al director de fotografía Robert L. Surtees que filmara la película en formato panorámico, que no era del gusto de Wyler. En el rodaje se emplearon más de doscientos camellos, 2500 caballos y unos 10 000 extras.
La batalla naval se filmó con miniaturas en un gran tanque de agua en los estudios de la Metro en Culver City (California). La carrera de carros, de nueve minutos de duración, es una de las secuencias más famosas de la historia del cine, mientras que la banda sonora, compuesta y dirigida por Miklós Rózsa, es la de mayor duración que se ha creado para un filme e influyó profundamente en el cine durante más de quince años.

El clásico de la Semana Santa vuelve a la pantalla grande de los cines, el próximo 2 de abril las cuádrigas de "Ben-Hur" volverán a correr en una espectacular versión remasterizada y restaurada.
“Ben-Hur” es una película legendaria, de ésas cuyo nombre está esculpido con letras de oro en la historia del séptimo arte. Una macro superproducción que utiliza toda su magnitud para convertir una historia en una epopeya que carece del sentido de la mesura pero que sin embargo contiene tal cantidad de hallazgos narrativos, visuales y estéticos capaces de hacer de sus más de tres horas y media un entretenimiento.
“Ben-Hur” resume y condensa la quintaesencia del cine como entretenimiento y arte total: un espectáculo de principio a fin lleno de escenas épicas de una grandeza colosal, y al tiempo compuesto por maravillosas escenas íntimas -y llenas de detalles- no menos fascinantes. Todo al servicio de una memorable historia sobre la venganza y el perdón bifurcada en dos relatos que se entrecruzan y fluyen ante los ojos del espectador
Su director, William Wyler, logró la proeza nunca superada de ganar 11 Oscar en las categorías de mejor película (para el legendario productor Sam Zimbalist), director, actor principal (Charlton Heston), actor de reparto (Hugh Griffin), dirección artística, fotografía, diseño de vestuario, efectos visuales, montaje, banda sonora y sonido. Aunque “Titanic” y “El Señor de los Anillos: El retorno del rey” lograron años más tarde igualar el récord, ni una ni otra se llevaron premios en los apartados actorales.
Vale la pena volver a descubrirla o contemplarla por primera vez en una pantalla de cine. Para disfrutar de esta historia inigualable de los tiempos de Cristo.

Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo is a 1944 American war film released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It is based on the true story of the Doolittle Raid, America's first retaliatory air strike against Japan four months after the December 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
Mervyn Le Roy directed Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo and Sam Zimbalist produced the film. The screenplay by Dalton Trumbo was based on the 1943 book of the same name, written by Captain Ted W. Lawson, a pilot who participated in the raid. In both the book and the film, Lawson gives an eyewitness account of the training, the mission, and the aftermath as experienced by his crew and others who flew the mission on April 18, 1942. Lawson piloted "The Ruptured Duck", the seventh of 16 B-25s to take off from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet aka, "Shangri-La."
Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo stars Van Johnson as Lawson, Phyllis Thaxter as his wife Ellen, Robert Walker as Corporal David Thatcher, Robert Mitchum as Lieutenant Bob Gray and Spencer Tracy as Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle, the man who planned and led the raid. The film is noted for its accurate depiction of the historical details of the raid, as well as its use of actual wartime footage of the bombers in some flying scenes.

Plot:
Allan Quatermain (Stewart Granger), an experienced hunter and guide, reluctantly agrees to help courageous, flame-haired Elizabeth Curtis (Deborah Kerr) and her brother John Goode (Richard Carlson) search for her husband, who disappeared in the unexplored African interior while searching for the legendary mines. They have a copy of the map he used. A tall, mysterious native, Umbopa (Siriaque), joins the safari. Quartermain has no use for women on a safari, but soon finds himself irresistibly attracted to the outwardly prim but inwardly passionate Elizabeth. During the long and grueling journey, they begin falling in love.
The party encounters Van Brun (Hugo Haas), a lone white man living with a tribe. They learn that he met Curtis. However, when Allan recognizes him as a fugitive who cannot afford to let them go, they take him hostage to leave the village safely. Van Brun tries to shoot Allan, killing his faithful right-hand man Khiva (Kimursi). Allan dispatches Van Brun and the party flees from the angry villagers.
When they finally reach the region where the mines are supposed to be, they are met by people who resemble Umbopa. They discover that their companion is royalty; he has returned to attempt to dethrone the evil King Twala (Baziga). Umbopa leaves with his supporters, while Allan, Elizabeth and John travel to a tense meeting with Twala. With his last rifle bullet, John kills a would-be attacker, temporarily quelling the natives.
The king's advisor, Gagool (Sekaryongo), communicates that they have seen Curtis and leads them to a cave that contains a trove of jewels and in which they find the skeletal remains of Elizabeth's husband. While they are distracted by this discovery, Gagool sneaks away and triggers a booby trap that seals them inside the cave. Leaving the jewels behind, they find a way out through an underground stream and return to the settlement, just as Umbopa and his followers arrive.
Umbopa's people have an unusual method of deciding the kingship. The two claimants duel to the death. Despite cheating by one of Twala's men, Umbopa wins. Afterwards, he provides an escort for his friends' return trip.

Sam Zimbalist
Sam Zimbalist (March 31, 1904, New York – November 4, 1958, Rome, Italy) was an American film producer.
Early life
Born to a Jewish family, he began his career at 16 as a film cutter at Metro Studios. He remained with Metro when the studio merged with Goldwyn Pictures and with Mayer Pictures in 1924 to become Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Among the films he edited at MGM was Lon Chaney's While the City Sleeps (1928).
Film producer
He was promoted to assistant producer in 1929 and full producer in 1936. He produced the films King Solomon's Mines (1950) and Quo Vadis (1951), both of which received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture. He also was the producer for the 1944 film Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, the story of the Doolittle Raiders.
Death
Zimbalist died suddenly of a heart attack In Italy, while working on MGM's most elaborate production until that time, the 1959 epic Ben-Hur. He was buried at the Hillside Memorial Park in Culver City, California. He received a posthumous Oscar for the film, and remains the only person to ever posthumously receive a Best Picture award. His Oscar was accepted by his wife Mary Zimbalist, who made a speech in honor of her late husband.

They discover that their companion is royalty; he has returned to attempt to dethrone the evil King Twala (Baziga). Umbopa leaves with his supporters, while Allan, Elizabeth and John travel to a tense meeting with Twala. With his last rifle bullet, John kills a would-be attacker, temporarily quelling the natives. The king's advisor, Gagool (Sekaryongo), communicates that they have seen Curtis and leads them to a cave that contains a trove of jewels and in which they find the skeletal remains of Elizabeth's husband. While they are distracted by this discovery, Gagool sneaks away and triggers a booby trap that seals them inside the cave. Leaving the jewels behind, they find a way out through an underground stream and return to the settlement, just as Umbopa and his followers arrive. Umbopa's people have an unusual method of deciding the kingship. The two claimants duel to the death. Despite cheating by one of Twala's men, Umbopa wins. Todo al servicio de una memorable historia sobre la venganza y el perdón bifurcada en dos relatos que se entrecruzan y fluyen ante los ojos del espectador
Su director, William Wyler, logró la proeza nunca superada de ganar 11 Oscar en las categorías de mejor película (para el legendario productor Sam Zimbalist), director, actor principal (Charlton Heston), actor de reparto (Hugh Griffin), dirección artística, fotografía, diseño de vestuario, efectos visuales, montaje, banda sonora y sonido. Aunque “Titanic” y “El Señor de los Anillos: El retorno del rey” lograron años más tarde igualar el récord, ni una ni otra se llevaron premios en los apartados actorales.

“Ben-Hur” es una película legendaria, de ésas cuyo nombre está esculpido con letras de oro en la historia del séptimo arte. Una macro superproducción que utiliza toda su magnitud para convertir una historia en una epopeya que carece del sentido de la mesura pero que sin embargo contiene tal cantidad de hallazgos narrativos, visuales y estéticos capaces de hacer de sus más de tres horas y media un entretenimiento.
“Ben-Hur” resume y condensa la quintaesencia del cine como entretenimiento y arte total: un espectáculo de principio a fin lleno de escenas épicas de una grandeza colosal, y al tiempo compuesto por maravillosas escenas íntimas -y llenas de detalles- no menos fascinantes. Todo al servicio de una memorable historia sobre la venganza y el perdón bifurcada en dos relatos que se entrecruzan y fluyen ante los ojos del espectador
Su director, William Wyler, logró la proeza nunca superada de ganar 11 Oscar en las categorías de mejor película (para el legendario productor Sam Zimbalist), director, actor principal (Charlton Heston), actor de reparto (Hugh Griffin), dirección artística, fotografía, diseño de vestuario, efectos visuales, montaje, banda sonora y sonido. Aunque “Titanic” y “El Señor de los Anillos: El retorno del rey” lograron años más tarde igualar el récord, ni una ni otra se llevaron premios en los apartados actorales.
Vale la pena volver a descubrirla o contemplarla por primera vez en una pantalla de cine. Para disfrutar de esta historia inigualable de los tiempos de Cristo.

Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo is a 1944 American war film released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It is based on the true story of the Doolittle Raid, America's first retaliatory air strike against Japan four months after the December 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
Mervyn Le Roy directed Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo and Sam Zimbalist produced the film. The screenplay by Dalton Trumbo was based on the 1943 book of the same name, written by Captain Ted W. Lawson, a pilot who participated in the raid. In both the book and the film, Lawson gives an eyewitness account of the training, the mission, and the aftermath as experienced by his crew and others who flew the mission on April 18, 1942. Lawson piloted "The Ruptured Duck", the seventh of 16 B-25s to take off from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet aka, "Shangri-La."
Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo stars Van Johnson as Lawson, Phyllis Thaxter as his wife Ellen, Robert Walker as Corporal David Thatcher, Robert Mitchum as Lieutenant Bob Gray and Spencer Tracy as Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle, the man who planned and led the raid. The film is noted for its accurate depiction of the historical details of the raid, as well as its use of actual wartime footage of the bombers in some flying scenes.

Plot:
Allan Quatermain (Stewart Granger), an experienced hunter and guide, reluctantly agrees to help courageous, flame-haired Elizabeth Curtis (Deborah Kerr) and her brother John Goode (Richard Carlson) search for her husband, who disappeared in the unexplored African interior while searching for the legendary mines. They have a copy of the map he used. A tall, mysterious native, Umbopa (Siriaque), joins the safari. Quartermain has no use for women on a safari, but soon finds himself irresistibly attracted to the outwardly prim but inwardly passionate Elizabeth. During the long and grueling journey, they begin falling in love.
The party encounters Van Brun (Hugo Haas), a lone white man living with a tribe. They learn that he met Curtis. However, when Allan recognizes him as a fugitive who cannot afford to let them go, they take him hostage to leave the village safely. Van Brun tries to shoot Allan, killing his faithful right-hand man Khiva (Kimursi). Allan dispatches Van Brun and the party flees from the angry villagers.
When they finally reach the region where the mines are supposed to be, they are met by people who resemble Umbopa. They discover that their companion is royalty; he has returned to attempt to dethrone the evil King Twala (Baziga). Umbopa leaves with his supporters, while Allan, Elizabeth and John travel to a tense meeting with Twala. With his last rifle bullet, John kills a would-be attacker, temporarily quelling the natives.
The king's advisor, Gagool (Sekaryongo), communicates that they have seen Curtis and leads them to a cave that contains a trove of jewels and in which they find the skeletal remains of Elizabeth's husband. While they are distracted by this discovery, Gagool sneaks away and triggers a booby trap that seals them inside the cave. Leaving the jewels behind, they find a way out through an underground stream and return to the settlement, just as Umbopa and his followers arrive.
Umbopa's people have an unusual method of deciding the kingship. The two claimants duel to the death. Despite cheating by one of Twala's men, Umbopa wins. Afterwards, he provides an escort for his friends' return trip.

Outro filme para a TV contando o romance que Elvis teve com LindaThompson . Don Johnson faz o papel de Elvis nos anos 70. Linda Thompson foi Miss Tennessee, fato que facilitou sua aproximação com Elvis em 1972. Era a Rainha da Beleza e o Rei do Rock que novamente era o centro das atenções após seu grande retorno aos shows! Elvis estava separado de Priscilla e não havia nenhuma namorada "fixa" naquele momento! O primeiro encontro foi num cinema que foi reservado somente para Elvis e sua equipe! Era um lugar até simples para ser freqüentado por um grande ídolo como Elvis, mas era sua forma de relaxar e esquecer dos problemas do dia a dia. Apreciador de Karatê gostava de assistir muitos filmes do gênero, e foi numa destas seções que Linda estava! Começava ali um relacionamento de 4 anos, uma história tensa que deixou muitos fãs boquiabertos! Linda Thompson vendeu sua história em 1981 para a TV NBC que acabou colocando o ator Don Johnson (que ficou famoso no seriado Miami Vice) no papel de Elvis! Em 1988 Priscilla Presley iria fazer o mesmo lançando na TV uma minissérie chamada "Elvis e Eu". A história que envolveu Elvis e Linda é muito interessante, repleta de temas polêmicos e importantes na vida de Elvis, porém o filme peca na escolha do ator. Não que Don Johnson fosse mal ator, é que como muitos outros atores que fizeram "Elvis", a aparência conta nestas horas. Johnson não possui uma fisionomia que lembre "Elvis". Suas performances no palco também deixam muito a desejar, isso porque ele apenas dupla a voz de "Ronnie Mcdowell", o mesmo cover que cedeu sua voz para o filme "Elvis não Morreu". Há também os corriqueiros erros que os fãs mais atentos não deixam passar em branco. Um deles é "Elvis" cantando "Separate Ways" ao vivo em Las Vegas, algo que nunca ocorreu na realidade. Outra coisa engraçada é a gola do macacão usada no filme, uma coisa simples de se fazer, mas alguém da produção do filme quis "inovar" e o resultado ficou horroroso! Mesmo assim a história é interessante e vai prender o fã até o final para entender o que Linda passou ao lado de Elvis entre 1972 a 1976. Alguns fatos que ocorreram com Priscilla e que foram relatados em seu livro "Elvis and me", também ocorreram com Linda. Alguns membros da Máfia de Memphis também confirmaram em livros e em entrevistas vários fatos que estão no filme. Linda era irmã de Sam Thompson que também fazia a segurança de Elvis. Quando Elvis deu tiros numa suíte em Las Vegas que quase acertaram Linda numa outra sala está no filme! Os tiros não foram para acertar Linda, mas são frutos de uma "brincadeira" com os seguranças que estavam na sala, um dos tiros passou a poucos centímetros da cabeça de Linda. Caso esta bala acertasse Linda, talvez a carreira de Elvis tivesse uma trágica reviravolta! Segundo Linda, Elvis estava dependente dos medicamentos que foram receitados pelo seu médico particular, mas se recusava procurar ajuda. Em algumas situações Elvis teria ficado desacordado, sendo socorrido por Linda que acionava o socorro médico, estes fatos também estão no filme. As "traições" de Elvis também são mencionadas por Linda, fato que foi decisivo em seu afastamento de Elvis. Porém a própria Linda menciona no filme que traiu Elvis como uma forma de retaliação. O fim do relacionamento se dá no final de 1976 quando Elvis conhece Ginger Alden. Segundo a história de quem conviveu com Elvis, Ginger não tinha a maturidade de Linda e não soube lidar com os problemas que ele vinha passando. Assista e tire suas conclusões.

Elvis estava separado de Priscilla e não havia nenhuma namorada "fixa" naquele momento! O primeiro encontro foi num cinema que foi reservado somente para Elvis e sua equipe! Era um lugar até simples para ser freqüentado por um grande ídolo como Elvis, mas era sua forma de relaxar e esquecer dos problemas do dia a dia. Apreciador de Karatê gostava de assistir muitos filmes do gênero, e foi numa destas seções que Linda estava! Começava ali um relacionamento de 4 anos, uma história tensa que deixou muitos fãs boquiabertos! Linda Thompson vendeu sua história em 1981 para a TV NBC que acabou colocando o ator Don Johnson (que ficou famoso no seriado Miami Vice) no papel de Elvis! Em 1988 Priscilla Presley iria fazer o mesmo lançando na TV uma minissérie chamada "Elvis e Eu". A história que envolveu Elvis e Linda é muito interessante, repleta de temas polêmicos e importantes na vida de Elvis, porém o filme peca na escolha do ator. Não que Don Johnson fosse mal ator, é que como muitos outros atores que fizeram "Elvis", a aparência conta nestas horas. Johnson não possui uma fisionomia que lembre "Elvis". Suas performances no palco também deixam muito a desejar, isso porque ele apenas dupla a voz de "Ronnie Mcdowell", o mesmo cover que cedeu sua voz para o filme "Elvis não Morreu". Há também os corriqueiros erros que os fãs mais atentos não deixam passar em branco. Um deles é "Elvis" cantando "Separate Ways" ao vivo em Las Vegas, algo que nunca ocorreu na realidade. Outra coisa engraçada é a gola do macacão usada no filme, uma coisa simples de se fazer, mas alguém da produção do filme quis "inovar" e o resultado ficou horroroso! Mesmo assim a história é interessante e vai prender o fã até o final para entender o que Linda passou ao lado de Elvis entre 1972 a 1976. Alguns fatos que ocorreram com Priscilla e que foram relatados em seu livro "Elvis and me", também ocorreram com Linda. Alguns membros da Máfia de Memphis também confirmaram em livros e em entrevistas vários fatos que estão no filme. Linda era irmã de Sam Thompson que também fazia a segurança de Elvis. Quando Elvis deu tiros numa suíte em Las Vegas que quase acertaram Linda numa outra sala está no filme! Os tiros não foram para acertar Linda, mas são frutos de uma "brincadeira" com os seguranças que estavam na sala, um dos tiros passou a poucos centímetros da cabeça de Linda. Caso esta bala acertasse Linda, talvez a carreira de Elvis tivesse uma trágica reviravolta! Segundo Linda, Elvis estava dependente dos medicamentos que foram receitados pelo seu médico particular, mas se recusava procurar ajuda. Em algumas situações Elvis teria ficado desacordado, sendo socorrido por Linda que acionava o socorro médico, estes fatos também estão no filme. As "traições" de Elvis também são mencionadas por Linda, fato que foi decisivo em seu afastamento de Elvis. Porém a própria Linda menciona no filme que traiu Elvis como uma forma de retaliação. O fim do relacionamento se dá no final de 1976 quando Elvis conhece Ginger Alden. Segundo a história de quem conviveu com Elvis, Ginger não tinha a maturidade de Linda e não soube lidar com os problemas que ele vinha passando. Assista e tire suas conclusões.
