With a rich history reaching back more than one thousand years, the six nations of the Iroquois Confederacy - the Mohawk, the Oneida, the Onondaga, the Cayuga, the Seneca and the Tuscarora - are considered to be the most avid storytellers on earth with a collection of tales so vast it would dwarf those of any other society. This mystical culture's supernatural tradition and treasury of tales and beliefs is largely unknown and their most powerful sacred sites unrecognised. Assembling the lore and beliefs of this guarded spiritual legacy, Michael Bastine shares the stories he has collected of both historic and contemporary encounters with beings and places of Iroquois legend: shapeshifting witches, strange forest creatures, ethereal lights, vampire zombies, cursed areas, dark magicians, talking animals, enchanted masks and haunted hills, roads and battlefields as well as accounts of miraculous healings by medicine people such as Mad Bear and Ted Williams.

The Taj Mahal is a mausoleum located in Agra, India, built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal.
The Taj Mahal (also "the Taj") is considered the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements from Persian, Indian, and Islamic architectural styles. In 1983, the Taj Mahal became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was cited as "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage."
While the white domed marble mausoleum is its most familiar component, the Taj Mahal is actually an integrated complex of structures. Building began around 1632 and was completed around 1653, and employed thousands of artisans and craftsmen. The construction of the Taj Mahal was entrusted to a board of architects under imperial supervision including Abd ul-Karim Ma'mur Khan, Makramat Khan, and Ustad Ahmad Lahauri. Lahauri is generally considered to be the principal designer. Among the 20.000 persons who participated in the palace construction there are also many craftsmen and artists from Europe and Central Asia. Among them was also an Italian artist: Geronimo Veroneo, that someone suspect can be one of the possible architects of this monument.
In 1631, Shah Jahan, emperor during the Mughal empire's period of greatest prosperity, was griefstricken when his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal, died during the birth of their fourteenth child, Gauhara Begum.Construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1632, one year after her death. The court chronicles of Shah Jahan's grief illustrate the love story traditionally held as an inspiration for Taj Mahal. The principal mausoleum was completed in 1648 and the surrounding buildings and garden were finished five years later. Emperor Shah Jahan himself described the Taj in these words:
"Should guilty seek asylum here / Like one pardoned, he becomes free from sin. / Should a sinner make his way to this mansion / All his past sins are to be washed away / The sight of this mansion creates sorrowing sighs / And the sun and the moon shed tears from their eyes / In this world this edifice has been made; To display thereby the creator's glory".
The Taj Mahal incorporates and expands on design traditions of Persian architecture and earlier Mughal architecture. While earlier Mughal buildings were primarily constructed of red sandstone, Shah Jahan promoted the use of white marble inlaid with semi-precious stones, and buildings under his patronage reached new levels of refinement. The central focus of the complex is the tomb. This large, white marble structure stands on a square plinth and consists of a symmetrical building with an iwan (an arch-shaped doorway) topped by a large dome and finial.

This video is about a book (Indian Caribbean Folklore Spirits) that captivates and provides details of the presence of a brood of spirits believed to roam the Caribbean since the abolition of slavery. Only a few elderly East Indians/ South Asians in the region are actually aware of them. Their grandparents had migrated from India between 1838 and 1917 as indentured laborers to replace freed slaves in the sugar plantations.
Now, for the first time in history, the existence of these spirits is revealed collectively to the general public, in this compilation.
These supernatural beings are:

Classic, Ghazal Music in Afghanistan.
In general, The classical music in Afghanistan comes from North India. Rhythm is necessary. The Tabla is usually used for this. But any other drum instrument is good like the dholak or daira. (list of instruments)
The Harmonium (or Harmonia), Sitar, Rubab is used to accompany this and play a melody (or "Raag").
Voice isn't necessary in this classical Music, but it is possible. Like Ustad Sarahang did. (Ustad means: Master).
Some Classical Afghan singers:
Ustad Sarahang, Ustad Rahim Bakhsh, Ustad Hashem, Ustad Amahang.
Ghazal is more the kind of music that should give you some rest. An Harmonium and Tabla required. The voice is very, the stinger and the texts.
These are poetic texts and can be lovesongs or religious songs.
Some Afghan Ghazal singers:
Ustad Sarahang, Nashenaas, Ustad Mahwash, Ahmad Wali, Farhad Darya.
Some famous (Indian) raga's:
Kalvani, Todi, Kamboji, Bhairavi, Chandrakauns, Pantuvarali
Folklore (Mahali)
Afghan folklore music is actually played in combination with some drums (tabla, daira, dholak, Kozak or any other) with Rubab and Harmonium.
Some singers come from "Kharabad" a region in Afghanistan. Folk music is played in all regions in Afghanistan and different languages.
Some famous folklore singers in Afghanistan:
Durai Loghari, Sallaam Loghari, Behltun, Faiz Karezi.

VOICED BY LOUISE BATES

The earthquake which devastated western India last week (Jan 26) is still sending out aftershocks, but now of a spiritual kind.
Villagers near its epicentre have reported almost supernatural phenomenon, with claims of pillars of water gushing high into the air.
In a town not far from the scene, a shrine for two accursed medieval lovers is attracting throngs of devotees convinced that an explanation for last week's devastation lies in the unfortunate couple's tale.
VOICE-OVER:
When two of the plates that make up the Indian subcontinent moved, it created the recent earthquake and this sink hole at its epicentre.
But the villagers of nearby Anjar have another explanation.
They say the quake was caused by two young lovers, dead for 500 years.
Jassal and Toral lie side by side in these wrecked mausoleums, separated by a 30 centimeter gap.
According to legend, should the tombs ever meet, the world will end.
It is still not clear if the quake caused the two tombs to come together, but many people are taking it as a sign.
Hundreds have visited the site since the earthquake.
This man says, in his mind, it is beyond doubt that the legend is true.
The quake proves it.
SOUNDUP: (Gujarati) Indulal Saputraj - Villager
But the man who watches over the shrine says that's absurd.
Beneath the rubble the tombs are still apart, he says.
SOUNDUP: (Gujarati) Ghamsgyam Ansari - Temple Watchman
Even so, until the tombs are cleared the Temple Watchman and the people who have been flocking here are keeping an open mind.

Nakai: Earth Spirit - Native American Music
This collection of solo flute pieces from Navajo-Ute musician R. Carlos Nakai is an evocative delight. The album consists of mostly original material, from the composition "Canyon Reverie," to the improvisational "In Media Res," to "Athabascan Song," an arrangement of a traditional song. The latter in particular stands out, with a faster rhythm and more lilting melody than most of the other pieces

The latter in particular stands out, with a faster rhythm and more lilting melody than most of the other pieces. There's also "Ancient Dreams," performed on a bone whistle; the instrument almost exceeds the upper range of human hearing, and Nakai occasionally sounds like he's imitating birdcalls. A classically trained musician, Nakai blends musical traditions to create a whole that reminds one, on occasion, of Japanese shakuhachi music.
This album best captures the timeless serenity of the solo Native American flute. R. Carlos Nakai's music speaks to the spirit with a simplicity that transcends place and time. Includes original compositions, traditional Athabascan and Omaha melodies.

Ray Carlos Nakai (a.k.a. R Carlos Nakai ) was born in Flagstaff Arizona on April 16, 1946 and now resides in Tucson, Arizona. He is a Native American of Navajo-Ute heritage who began his musical career as a freshman at Northern Arizona University studying brass instruments and playing in the NAU marching band. In his sophomore year he enlisted in the US Navy with the hope of eventually playing in the Armed Forces Band. He passed the highly competitive auditions for the Armed Forces School of Music and was 28th on the waiting list for admission. Playing with the Armed Forces Band became impossible, however, because an auto accident damaged his mouth making it impossible to produce the correct embouchure to continue playing brass instruments. Shortly after this accident, he was presented with a gift of a traditional Native American cedar flute and challenged to master it.
Nakai says that most of his inspiration comes from the expressions of native communities and his desire to preserve his own Native American heritage. In addition, he likes to blend his native music with that of other cultures thereby helping to preserve their heritage as well. To that end, he has collaborated with a Japanese folk ensemble, the Philadelphia Orchestra's Israeli cellist Udi Bar-David, and many others. He has worked with American composer Philip Glass Tibetan flutist Nawang Khechog and flutist Paul Horn. A 2005 collaboration with slack key guitar master Keola Beamer fused two very different indigenous American cultural forms and resulted in the album "our Beloved Land." He has expressed his philosophy and views of Native American culture in the modern world in an interview with Native Digest.
The Library of Congress has more than 30 of his recordings preserved in the American Folklife Center.
His "Earth Spirit" and "Canyon Trilogy" albums are the only Native American albums to be certified Gold by the RIAA.
Nakai developed a system of tablature notation ( commonly known as Nakai Tablature ) that could be used across a wide variety of flute keys and tunings. He published this in The Art of the Native American Flute (1996) with James Demars, Ken Light and David P. McAllester. This provided resources and support for other musicians playing the Native American flute.
In 2005 he was inducted into the Arizona Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame. He was awarded the Arizona Governor's Arts Award in 1992. He received an honorary doctorate from Northern Arizona University in 1994 and the NAUAA Dwight Patterson (1934) Alumnus of the Year Award in 2001. Nakai earned a Master's Degree in American Indian Studies from the University of Arizona.
