David Nicholls - Drei auf Reisen Hörbuch.
"Ich habe das Gefühl, unsere Ehe ist am Ende, Douglas. Ich glaube, ich will dich verlassen", verkündet Connie eines Nachts ihrem darauf absolut unvorbereiteten Ehemann Douglas. Nach über zwanzig Jahren glücklicher Ehe sei der ideale Zeitpunkt für eine Trennung und einen Neuanfang gekommen - jetzt, wo auch ihr Sohn Albie bald ausziehe. Doch der letzten gemeinsamen, bereits geplanten Reise, der Grand Tour durch bedeutende Städte Europas - Paris, Amsterdam, München, Venedig, Florenz, Madrid, Barcelona -, soll laut Connie dennoch nichts im Wege stehen. Unterwegs erinnert sich Douglas an ihre zahlreichen Erlebnisse und an die verschiedenen Phasen ihrer Beziehung und hofft, seine Frau auf dieser Reise zurückzugewinnen und zugleich die Beziehung zu seinem Sohn vertiefen zu können - ein ambitioniertes Unterfangen, das trotz akribischer Planung unerwartete Wendungen nimmt.
Meine Erwartungen waren hoch. Die Leseprobe war spritzig und ich kenne bereits ein Buch von David Nicholls. Auch wenn ich zugeben muss, dass diesmal die Protagonisten etwas älter sein, als ich es so aus eigener Sicht kenne.
Connie will Douglass nach vielen Jahren Ehe verlassen. Das Ganze scheint erst mal ziemlich rational und kühl berechnend, denn sie will genau so lange warten, bis der Sohn auszieht. Damit die Veränderung einfach und ohne großes Trara für den Sohn über die Bühne geht. Das ist auch ein Markenzeichen Connie. Sie handelt überlegt und rational will aber gleichzeitig, dass ihr Mann anders reagiert, als er eigentlich ist. Aber Douglas ist natürlich aus der Bahn geworfen, hat wohl nicht damit gerechnet, dass seine Frau ihn so einfach verlassen will.
Schritt für Schritt wird nun erzählt, wie die beiden sich kennengelernt haben und wie ihre Beziehung, ihre Ehe verlaufen ist. Dabei gab es einige gravierende Tiefpunkte, wie den Tod der gemeinsamen Tochter. Douglas ist sicherlich ein Mannes, der vor allem Pragmatiker und als Biochemiker nicht gerade der liebevollste und impulsivste Mensch ist. Aber hat Connie das nicht gewusst und vielleicht auch gerade geschätzt an ihm? Seine Ruhe, seine Zuverlässigkeit, seine abgeklärte Art mit den Dingen des Lebens umzugehen. Douglas beschließt, um seine Frau zu kämpfen.
Auf einer großen langen Urlaubsreise versucht er seiner Frau wieder näher zu kommen. Aber er verzettelt sich. Vor allem, weil auch sein Sohn mit von der Partie ist und die beiden ebenfalls große Beziehungsprobleme haben. Douglass hat es einfach nicht verstanden, mit seiner Familie so umzugehen, dass sie ihm erhalten bleibt. Und nun fällt es ihm schwer, mit den Folgen umzugehen.
Seine Reise wird zusehends verzweifelter und ohne zu viel zu verraten steht er irgendwann alleine da und ist hilflos und unglücklich. Wie soll er jetzt bloß weitermachen.
Ob es ein Happy End gibt verrate ich nicht. Mir hat das Buch gut gefallen.

Sir Douglas Ralph "Doug" Nicholls KCVO, OBE, (9 December 1906 – 4 June 1988) was a prominent Aboriginal Australian from the Yorta Yorta people. He was a professional athlete, Churches of Christ pastor and church planter, ceremonial officer and a pioneering campaigner for reconciliation.
Nicholls was the first Aboriginal person to be knighted and the first Aboriginal person appointed to vice-regal office, serving as Governor of South Australia from 1 December 1976 until his resignation on 30 April 1977 due to poor health.
Douglas Nicholls was born in 1906 on the Cummeragunja Mission in New South Wales. Schooling at the mission was provided to Grade 3 standard and strict religious principles were emphasised. When he was eight, he saw his 16-year-old sister Hilda forcibly taken from his family by the police and taken to the Cootamundra Training Home for Girls.
At 13 he worked with his uncle as a tar boy and general hand on sheep stations, and he lived with the shearers. He worked hard and had a cheerful disposition. This annoyed one of the shearers so much that he challenged Nicholls to a fight, with the loser to hand over one week's pay (30 shillings – $3). After six rounds the shearer who challenged him conceded defeat.

"Ich habe das Gefühl, unsere Ehe ist am Ende, Douglas. Ich glaube, ich will dich verlassen", verkündet Connie eines Nachts ihrem darauf absolut unvorbereiteten Ehemann Douglas. Nach über zwanzig Jahren glücklicher Ehe sei der ideale Zeitpunkt für eine Trennung und einen Neuanfang gekommen - jetzt, wo auch ihr Sohn Albie bald ausziehe. Doch der letzten gemeinsamen, bereits geplanten Reise, der Grand Tour durch bedeutende Städte Europas - Paris, Amsterdam, München, Venedig, Florenz, Madrid, Barcelona -, soll laut Connie dennoch nichts im Wege stehen. Unterwegs erinnert sich Douglas an ihre zahlreichen Erlebnisse und an die verschiedenen Phasen ihrer Beziehung und hofft, seine Frau auf dieser Reise zurückzugewinnen und zugleich die Beziehung zu seinem Sohn vertiefen zu können - ein ambitioniertes Unterfangen, das trotz akribischer Planung unerwartete Wendungen nimmt.
Meine Erwartungen waren hoch. Die Leseprobe war spritzig und ich kenne bereits ein Buch von David Nicholls. Auch wenn ich zugeben muss, dass diesmal die Protagonisten etwas älter sein, als ich es so aus eigener Sicht kenne.
Connie will Douglass nach vielen Jahren Ehe verlassen. Das Ganze scheint erst mal ziemlich rational und kühl berechnend, denn sie will genau so lange warten, bis der Sohn auszieht. Damit die Veränderung einfach und ohne großes Trara für den Sohn über die Bühne geht. Das ist auch ein Markenzeichen Connie. Sie handelt überlegt und rational will aber gleichzeitig, dass ihr Mann anders reagiert, als er eigentlich ist. Aber Douglas ist natürlich aus der Bahn geworfen, hat wohl nicht damit gerechnet, dass seine Frau ihn so einfach verlassen will.
Schritt für Schritt wird nun erzählt, wie die beiden sich kennengelernt haben und wie ihre Beziehung, ihre Ehe verlaufen ist. Dabei gab es einige gravierende Tiefpunkte, wie den Tod der gemeinsamen Tochter. Douglas ist sicherlich ein Mannes, der vor allem Pragmatiker und als Biochemiker nicht gerade der liebevollste und impulsivste Mensch ist. Aber hat Connie das nicht gewusst und vielleicht auch gerade geschätzt an ihm? Seine Ruhe, seine Zuverlässigkeit, seine abgeklärte Art mit den Dingen des Lebens umzugehen. Douglas beschließt, um seine Frau zu kämpfen.
Auf einer großen langen Urlaubsreise versucht er seiner Frau wieder näher zu kommen. Aber er verzettelt sich. Vor allem, weil auch sein Sohn mit von der Partie ist und die beiden ebenfalls große Beziehungsprobleme haben. Douglass hat es einfach nicht verstanden, mit seiner Familie so umzugehen, dass sie ihm erhalten bleibt. Und nun fällt es ihm schwer, mit den Folgen umzugehen.
Seine Reise wird zusehends verzweifelter und ohne zu viel zu verraten steht er irgendwann alleine da und ist hilflos und unglücklich. Wie soll er jetzt bloß weitermachen.
Ob es ein Happy End gibt verrate ich nicht. Mir hat das Buch gut gefallen.

Douglas and Connie have been married for 21 years when she announces that it's run its course and she wants out. They've planned a Grand Tour of Europe to mark their son Albie's end of school, as a kind of coming of age trip although you get the feeling that Albie might have come of age sometime prior. Nonetheless, with all the emotional turmoil firmly in place they embark on their trip only to have it quickly start to unravel and fall apart - which was inevitable, and you could see it coming a mile off. But Douglas is very surprised by it. He harks back frequently to the young woman that Connie once was, and the beginnings of their relationship - and even then you can clearly see that it was a monumental mis-match and wonder that they've made it this far. As Douglas re-lives their life together, and Albie does his best to disrupt things from the sidelines (an ungrateful child. The money could have been so much better spent) - you, the reader, can clearly see why things have failed. It's only poor old Douglas who can't. But in his accounting of things and his narrative of their shared story, I found it easy to understand what was clearly still a complete mystery to him. From the author of the wonderful One Day, this is a book for an older generation who may well see something of themselves in Douglas and Connie, and wonder what happened to that bright shiny future that we all saw ahead of us so long ago. It's terrific.

Blavatsky’s Tower: A Tragi-Comedie
A blind visionary and his family, secluded in a decaying tower, face mortality. Blavatsky’s Tower is Paradise Lost of a world that is the result of a narcissistic architect’s attempts to shape his domain into a Utopia. Playwright Moira Buffini has crafted the ultimate soap opera of contemporary family life. The play is a modern Glass Menagerie with fascinating characters to unravel.

Great Expectations Synopsis
Visually ravishing and rippling with immediacy, this new adaptation of the classic novel, directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire; Four Weddings and a Funeral), provides a fitting conclusion to both the 56th BFI London Film Festival and London's bicentenary celebrations of the life and work of Charles Dickens. Frightened into aiding an escaped convict (Ralph Fiennes in top form as Magwitch), young orphan Pip incurs the wrath of his abusive sister and guardian (Sally Hawkins) and is sent to satisfy the mysterious whims of the immensely rich and grim Miss Havisham (Helena Bonham Carter) and her adopted daughter Estella (Helena Barlow as the girl). This short-lived interlude leaves Pip captivated by the beautiful Estella and with a newly-acquired taste for grander things. Years later, when he is training with his kindly brother-in-law Joe (Jason Flemyng) as a blacksmith's apprentice, Pip learns from London lawyer Jaggers (Robbie Coltrane) that he has come into a fortune which will allow him to live as a gentleman. He assumes that his benefactor is the same lovelorn lady he visited as a child. David Nicholl's splendid script has an acute respect for the complexities of Dicken's original text (and I shall leave you in suspense as to which ending he chooses). The arc of Pip's journey - his youthful, innocent love for Estella, his corruption by social ambition and the dangerously possessive desire that follows - is also superbly expressed in the transition from Toby Irvine as the loyal young Pip, to Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) as the self-centred, careless adult. Holliday Grainger is delectable as the adult Estella, her calculated remove a perfect study of contained voluptuousness. One of the film's many accomplished strokes comes from costume designer Beatrix Aruna Pasztor's (Drugstore Cowboy; The Fisher King; Good Will Hunting) whose phantasmagorical gothic creation of Miss Havisham's brittle, papery wedding gown is both a knowing tribute to the actress who wears it and a sublime interpretation of Dickens' most melancholic character.
