Cuba, officially the Republic of Cuba, ( Spanish: República de Cuba) is an island country in the Caribbean. The nation of Cuba consists of the main island of Cuba, the Isla de la Juventud, and several archipelagos. Havana is the largest city in Cuba and the country's capital. Santiago de Cuba is the second largest city. To the north of Cuba lies the United States (140 km or 90 mi away) and the Bahamas, Mexico is to the west, the Cayman Islands and Jamaica are to the south, and Haiti and the Dominican Republic are to the southeast.
In 1492, Christopher Columbus landed on and claimed the island now occupied by Cuba, for the Kingdom of Spain. Cuba remained a territory of Spain until the Spanish--American War ended in 1898, and gained formal independence from the U.S. in 1902. A fragile democracy, increasingly dominated by radical politics eventually evolved, solidified by the Cuban Constitution of 1940, but was definitely quashed in 1952 by former president Fulgencio Batista, and an authoritarian regime was set up, intensifying and catalyzing already rampant corruption, political repression and crippling economic regulations. Batista was ousted in January 1959 by the July 26 movement, and a new administration under Fidel Castro established, which had by 1965 evolved into a single-party state under the revived Communist Party of Cuba, which holds power to date.
Cuba is home to over 11 million people and is the most populous island nation in the Caribbean, as well as the largest by area. Its people, culture, and customs draw from diverse sources, such as the aboriginal Taíno and Ciboney peoples, the period of Spanish colonialism, the introduction of African slaves and its proximity to the United States.
Cuba has a 99.8% literacy rate, an infant death rate lower than some developed countries, and an average life expectancy of 77.64. In 2006, Cuba was the only nation in the world which met the WWF's definition of sustainable development; having an ecological footprint of less than 1.8 hectares per capita and a Human Development Index of over 0.8 for 2007...
Cuba is an archipelago of islands located in the northern Caribbean Sea at the confluence with the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. It lies between latitudes 19° and 24°N, and longitudes 74° and 85°W. The United States lies 90 miles across the Straits of Florida to the north and northwest (to the closest tip of Key West, Florida), the Bahamas to the north, Haiti to the east, Jamaica and the Cayman Islands to the south, and Mexico to the west. Cuba is the principal island, surrounded by four smaller groups of islands: the Colorados Archipelago on the northwestern coast, the Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago on the north-central Atlantic coast, the Jardines de la Reina on the south-central coast and the Canarreos Archipelago on the southwestern coast.
The main island is 1,199 km (745 mi) long, constituting most of the nation's land area (105,006 km2 (40,543 sq mi)) and is the largest island in the Caribbean and 16th-largest island in the world by land area. The main island consists mostly of flat to rolling plains apart from the Sierra Maestra mountains in the southeast, whose highest point is Pico Turquino (1,975 m (6,480 ft)). The second-largest island is Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth) in the Canarreos archipelago, with an area of 3,056 km2 (1,180 sq mi). Cuba has a total land area of 110,860 km2 (42,803 sq mi)...
The local climate is tropical, moderated by northeasterly trade winds that blow year-round. In general (with local variations), there is a drier season from November to April, and a rainier season from May to October. The average temperature is 21 °C (69.8 °F) in January and 27 °C (80.6 °F) in July. The warm temperatures of the Caribbean Sea and the fact that Cuba sits across the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico combine to make the country prone to frequent hurricanes. Cuba: Defending Socialism, Resisting Imperialism brings you voices from Cuba, a country fighting for social and economic justice, representing the aspirations of the poor and oppressed worldwide, building socialism in a capitalist world. The film demonstrates how vital Cuba is to the struggle for socialism in Britain and beyond. Featuring Cuban workers -- including a lawyer, economist, teacher and farmer -- this film explains how the Cuban people have set up their economy, constitution and social provision despite 50 years of imperialist attack, isolation and, since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Special Period. Today it is a nation that not only provides its own people with world-class healthcare and education, but also sends medical assistance to every corner of the globe. Cuba is at the heart of the Latin American trade and cooperation bloc ALBA, which operates on the basis of solidarity and complementarity, not profit and exploitation. Cuba continues to build and deepen its socialist system and democracy despite the punitive US blockade and having to cope with the international capitalist crisis.

STORYLINE:
Cuban activist Oswaldo Paya presented a proposal for a new constitution on Wednesday, calling for the right of Cubans to criticise the government and operate private businesses.
The 170-page document, compiled by the activist''s Christian Liberation Movement with input from Cubans on and off the island, contains a blueprint for a modified constitution and new electoral laws and rules of association.
"Cubans are the ones who have the right and the mission to design a project for Cuba and no one else," Paya told reporters at his home in Havana.
The proposal was released on the fourth anniversary of Paya''s provocative Varela Project.
Under the Varela Project, Paya collected thousands of signatures of people seeking a rights referendum in Cuba, marking the most extensive homegrown, non-violent effort to push for reforms in Cuba''s one-party system since Fidel Castro took power in 1959.
The Cuban government responded with a petition drive of its own to declare socialism an "irrevocable" part of the constitution.
Paya''s latest endeavour appears to take the Varela Project a step further by providing a draft of a new possible constitution that could be debated.
It was produced after two years of discussions with more than 12-thousand Cubans on issues including education, health, religion, the economy and freedom of expression.
The new constitution would make it easier for Cubans to travel, and give those not living on the island but maintaining Cuban citizenship the right to vote.
Paya called for a popular vote on the proposal.
It is highly unlikely that the Cuban government will heed Paya''s calls.
There was no immediate comment from authorities.
During Wednesday''s news conference, Paya also mentioned Cuba''s recent referral to the United Nations Human Rights Commission.
"It would be a joke .... if their (the Human Rights Commission) first decision isn''t to ask for the release of the pacifist political prisoners in Cuba", said Paya.

Since attaining its independence from Spain, Cuba has had five constitutions. The current constitution was drafted in 1976 and has since been amended.
The 1901 Constitution was Cuba's first as an independent state. It contained the Platt Amendment, which allowed the United States to intervene in Cuba's affairs to protect its independence.
The 1901 Constitution was indeed a carbon copy of the Constitution written at La Yara in 1896, and met with fierce opposition from its principal author Major General José Braulio Alemán who strongly opposed the Platt Amendment.[citation needed]
It was Alemán's contention that Cuba should be and remain "Libre y Soberana", Free and Sovereign; and that the Platt Amendment just traded Spain's strong arm tactics on the island for the yoke of American imperialism.[citation needed]
Cuba's second constitution came into effect in 1934. This document was intended to be a provisional constitution.
In 1940, during the de facto presidency of Fulgencio Batista, a constitution was created. It provided for land reform, public education, minimum wage and other progressive ideas. Some of its provisions were not implemented in practice. Following a coup d'etat by Fulgencio Batista in 1952, parts of this constitution were suspended.

Joseph Philippe Pierre Yves Elliott Trudeau CC, CH, PC, QC, FSRC (
/truːˈdoʊ/; French pronunciation: [tʁydo]; October 18, 1919 – September 28, 2000), usually known as Pierre Trudeau or Pierre Elliott Trudeau, was the 15th Prime Minister of Canada from April 20, 1968 to June 4, 1979, and again from March 3, 1980 to June 30, 1984.
Trudeau began his political career campaigning for socialist ideals, but he eventually joined the Liberal Party of Canada when he entered federal politics in the 1960s. He was appointed as Lester Pearson's Parliamentary Secretary, and later became his Minister of Justice. From his base in Montreal, Trudeau took control of the Liberal Party and became a charismatic leader, inspiring "Trudeaumania". From the late 1960s until the mid-1980s, he dominated the Canadian political scene and aroused passionate reactions. "Reason before passion" was his personal motto. He retired from politics in 1984, and John Turner succeeded him as Prime Minister.
Admirers praise the force of Trudeau's intellect and they salute his political acumen in preserving national unity against Quebec separatists, suppressing a violent revolt, and establishing the Charter of Rights and Freedoms within Canada's constitution. Critics accuse him of arrogance, economic mismanagement, and unduly favouring the federal government relative to the provinces, especially in trying to control the oil wealth of the Prairies.

Cuba, officially the Republic of Cuba, ( Spanish: República de Cuba) is an island country in the Caribbean. The nation of Cuba consists of the main island of Cuba, the Isla de la Juventud, and several archipelagos. Havana is the largest city in Cuba and the country's capital. Santiago de Cuba is the second largest city. To the north of Cuba lies the United States (140 km or 90 mi away) and the Bahamas, Mexico is to the west, the Cayman Islands and Jamaica are to the south, and Haiti and the Dominican Republic are to the southeast.
In 1492, Christopher Columbus landed on and claimed the island now occupied by Cuba, for the Kingdom of Spain. Cuba remained a territory of Spain until the Spanish--American War ended in 1898, and gained formal independence from the U.S. in 1902. A fragile democracy, increasingly dominated by radical politics eventually evolved, solidified by the Cuban Constitution of 1940, but was definitely quashed in 1952 by former president Fulgencio Batista, and an authoritarian regime was set up, intensifying and catalyzing already rampant corruption, political repression and crippling economic regulations. Batista was ousted in January 1959 by the July 26 movement, and a new administration under Fidel Castro established, which had by 1965 evolved into a single-party state under the revived Communist Party of Cuba, which holds power to date.
Cuba is home to over 11 million people and is the most populous island nation in the Caribbean, as well as the largest by area. Its people, culture, and customs draw from diverse sources, such as the aboriginal Taíno and Ciboney peoples, the period of Spanish colonialism, the introduction of African slaves and its proximity to the United States.
Cuba has a 99.8% literacy rate, an infant death rate lower than some developed countries, and an average life expectancy of 77.64. In 2006, Cuba was the only nation in the world which met the WWF's definition of sustainable development; having an ecological footprint of less than 1.8 hectares per capita and a Human Development Index of over 0.8 for 2007...
Cuba is an archipelago of islands located in the northern Caribbean Sea at the confluence with the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. It lies between latitudes 19° and 24°N, and longitudes 74° and 85°W. The United States lies 90 miles across the Straits of Florida to the north and northwest (to the closest tip of Key West, Florida), the Bahamas to the north, Haiti to the east, Jamaica and the Cayman Islands to the south, and Mexico to the west. Cuba is the principal island, surrounded by four smaller groups of islands: the Colorados Archipelago on the northwestern coast, the Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago on the north-central Atlantic coast, the Jardines de la Reina on the south-central coast and the Canarreos Archipelago on the southwestern coast.
The main island is 1,199 km (745 mi) long, constituting most of the nation's land area (105,006 km2 (40,543 sq mi)) and is the largest island in the Caribbean and 16th-largest island in the world by land area. The main island consists mostly of flat to rolling plains apart from the Sierra Maestra mountains in the southeast, whose highest point is Pico Turquino (1,975 m (6,480 ft)). The second-largest island is Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth) in the Canarreos archipelago, with an area of 3,056 km2 (1,180 sq mi). Cuba has a total land area of 110,860 km2 (42,803 sq mi)...
The local climate is tropical, moderated by northeasterly trade winds that blow year-round. In general (with local variations), there is a drier season from November to April, and a rainier season from May to October. The average temperature is 21 °C (69.8 °F) in January and 27 °C (80.6 °F) in July. The warm temperatures of the Caribbean Sea and the fact that Cuba sits across the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico combine to make the country prone to frequent hurricanes. These are most common in September and October...

Cuban activist Oswaldo Paya presented a proposal for a new constitution on Wednesday, calling for the right of Cubans to criticise the government and operate private businesses.
The 170-page document, compiled by the activist''s Christian Liberation Movement with input from Cubans on and off the island, contains a blueprint for a modified constitution and new electoral laws and rules of association.
"Cubans are the ones who have the right and the mission to design a project for Cuba and no one else," Paya told reporters at his home in Havana.
The proposal was released on the fourth anniversary of Paya''s provocative Varela Project.
Under the Varela Project, Paya collected thousands of signatures of people seeking a rights referendum in Cuba, marking the most extensive homegrown, non-violent effort to push for reforms in Cuba''s one-party system since Fidel Castro took power in 1959.
The Cuban government responded with a petition drive of its own to declare socialism an "irrevocable" part of the constitution.
Paya''s latest endeavour appears to take the Varela Project a step further by providing a draft of a new possible constitution that could be debated.
It was produced after two years of discussions with more than 12-thousand Cubans on issues including education, health, religion, the economy and freedom of expression.
The new constitution would make it easier for Cubans to travel, and give those not living on the island but maintaining Cuban citizenship the right to vote.
Paya called for a popular vote on the proposal.
It is highly unlikely that the Cuban government will heed Paya''s calls.
There was no immediate comment from authorities.
During Wednesday''s news conference, Paya also mentioned Cuba''s recent referral to the United Nations Human Rights Commission.
