Louella Parsons (August 6, 1881 – December 9, 1972) was the first American movie columnist. She was retained by William Randolph Hearst, possibly because she had praised Hearst's mistress Marion Davies, and her columns were read by 20 million people in 400 newspapers worldwide. She remained Queen of Hollywood until the arrival of flamboyant Hedda Hopper, who displayed similar talents, and with whom she feuded viciously for years
She was born Louella Rose Oettinger in Freeport, Illinois, the daughter of Joshua Oettinger and Helen Stein, both of German Jewish descent. She had two brothers, Edwin and Fred, and a sister, Rae. In 1890, her widowed mother married John H. Edwards. They lived in Dixon, Illinois, later hometown of Ronald Reagan. In her teens, Louella was already a smart and intelligent young woman, but there were few literary outlets for her ambitions. It wasn't until high school that Louella decided to become a writer or a reporter. On June 4, 1901, at her high school graduation, Louella gave a foretelling speech, entitled “Great Men,” after which her principal announced that she would become a great writer.
After high school, Parsons enrolled in a teacher’s course at a local Dixon college. She received a financial contribution from a distant German relative. While still in college, Parsons obtained her first newspaper job as a part-time writer for the Dixon Star. In 1902, she became the first female journalist in Dixon, where she gossiped about Dixon social circles, making a step towards her Hollywood career. She and her first husband, John Parsons, moved to Burlington, Iowa. Her only child, Harriet (1906–1983), who grew up to become a film producer, was born there. While in Burlington, Parsons saw her first motion picture, The Great Train Robbery (1903). When her marriage broke up, Parsons moved to Chicago. In 1912, she had her first taste of the movie industry by selling a script for $25 to the Essanay Company, which would soon be employing Charlie Chaplin. Her small daughter, Harriet, was billed as "Baby Parsons" in several movies, which included The Magic Wand (1912), written by Louella Parsons. She also wrote a book titled How to Write for the Movies.
Beginning in 1928, she hosted a weekly radio program featuring movie star interviews that was sponsored by SunKist. A similar program in 1931 was sponsored by Charis Foundation Garment. In 1934, she signed a contract with the Campbell's Soup Company and began hosting a program titled Hollywood Hotel, which showcased stars in scenes from their upcoming movies.

An unauthorized story on Audrey Hepburn - The essence of chic and a beautiful woman, Audrey Hepburn bought a certain "magic" quality to the screen. Synonymous with big sunglasses and the little black dress, we also reveal the hardship she endured in her earlier years, and her dedicated humanitarian work.

Dr. Christian was a long-running radio series with Jean Hersholt in the title role. It aired on CBS from 1937 to 1954. After Hersholt portrayed the character Dr. John Luke, based on Dr. Allan Roy Dafoe, the obstetrician who delivered and cared for the Dionne Quintuplets, in the 20th Century Fox movie The Country Doctor (1936) and its two sequels. He wanted to do the same role on radio but could not get the rights. He decided to create his own doctor character for radio, and since he was a Hans Christian Andersen enthusiast, he borrowed that name for his character of philosophical Dr. Paul Christian. Dr. Christian practiced in the Midwest town of River's End with the assistance of Nurse Judy Price (Rosemary DeCamp, Lurene Tuttle, Kathleen Fitz, Helen Claire). With the opening theme music of "Rainbow on the River," Dr. Christian was introduced on CBS November 7, 1937 on The Vaseline Program, aka Dr. Christian's Office and later Dr. Christian, sponsored by Chesebrough Manufacturing Company's Vaseline [Petroleum Jelly, Hair Tonic, Lip Ice, etc.].

QUINCY JONES -- THE CMW INTERVIEW
"Legend" is a word that gets tossed around lightly these days, but in the case of Quincy Jones, it is perfectly appropriate. And not just because he won a Grammy Legend Award in 1991. But after six decades in the entertainment industry, a record 79 Grammy Award nominations, 27 Grammys, 7 Academy Award nominations, and the Academy's Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, Q's legacy is secure.
So it was with great pleasure that on Saturday, May 10th as part of the 2014 Music Summit, Canadian Music Week presented a Celebrity Interview with Quincy at the Toronto Marriot Hotel. Conducted by Ross Porter, broadcast executive of JAZZ.FM91, and named to the Order of Canada in 2013 for his own contributions to broadcasting, the hour-long interview covers the width and breadth of Q's career, running the gamut of popular music in the 20th century through blues, jazz, pop, film scores, rhythm and blues, soul and hip-hop. Quincy worked with, as the phrase goes, "everyone who's anyone", from Lionel Hampton to Tupac Shakur, Frank Sinatra to Michael Jackson, from Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan to Lesley Gore and Nikki Yanofsky, and many, many others too numerous to mention, in roles as diverse as jazz trumpeter, band leader, arranger, composer and producer.
In a wide ranging, almost free-association, conversation so apt for a jazz musician, Q reminisces, remonstrates, philosophizes, pontificates, entertains and illuminates the delighted crowd. This interview just scratches the surface of an amazing life, and as Quincy Jones himself says, "Life is the most amazing journey."

Louella Parsons (August 6, 1881 – December 9, 1972) was the first American movie columnist. She was retained by William Randolph Hearst, possibly because she had praised Hearst's mistress Marion Davies, and her columns were read by 20 million people in 400 newspapers worldwide. She remained Queen of Hollywood until the arrival of flamboyant Hedda Hopper, who displayed similar talents, and with whom she feuded viciously for years.
