Chechnya's President on Saturday claimed he had proof the Russians have long been planning mass deportations of his people.
Speaking exclusively to APTV in the nearly besieged capital of Grozny, he produced documents which he alleged were signed by the Russian Prime Minister on December 1st.
He also said the Russians would have to resort to nuclear weapons to defeat Chechen forces.
While two of the Chechen army's few tanks patrolled outside the Presidential palace, inside President Dzhokhar Dudayev was ready to produce his supposed proof of Russia's plans for the Chechen people.

On December 28, 2014, Ramzan Kadyrov, the Head of the Russian Chechen Republic, gathered 20,000 officers of the Chechen Security and Law Enforcement departments by sending them false orders stating that they need to be immediately ready for departure to fulfill some Putin’s order. They all appeared at the indicated location fully equipped and armed. All of these officers had to submit resignation letters to become volunteers, because as Kadyrov said – volunteers can do much more than the regular army, i.e. they do not need to obey the laws of war. About 500 out of 20,000 Chechen officers refused to submit such letters and were fired.

RUSSIA: CHECHNYA: ALLEGED CHECHEN REBEL LEADER INTERVIEW
Russian/Nat
In an exclusive interview with APTV, Russia's Most Wanted man has claimed Chechen soldiers hiding in the hills of their breakaway republic are inflicting physical and emotional damage on their Russian enemies.
Shamil Basayev, the Chechen leader wanted by Russian security forces for his attack last summer on a hospital in southern Russia, says his troops are using traps, kidnappings and surprise attacks to undermine the morale of Russian soldiers .
APTV has this exclusive interview with the Chechen rebel leader.
These are the most wanted men in Russia. Hidden away in the remote
hills of the breakaway republic of Chechnya, they carefully plot each new attack on the Russian troops.
They claim they have taken no lives since June, and consider that to be a failure on their behalf..
SOUNDBITE (Russian):
"I haven't killed anyone since Budyennovsk, although every day that I don't kill an occupier I consider to be a wasted day."
SUPERCAPTION: Shamil Basayev, Chechen rebel
Shamil Basayev led the rebels on a devastating attack into the southern Russian town of Budyennovsk in June. Dozens of innocent civilians were killed, and another 500 were held hostage for several days in the main hospital.
When Russian special troops tried to storm the building, many more lives were lost.
Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin won the release of the surviving hostages by guaranteeing safe passage for Basayev and his men back to Chechnya.
Since then there have been repeated attempts by the Russians and Chechen authorities to agree on a ceasefire but these broke down after an assassination attempt on the life of General Anatoly Romanov, Russia's top military commander in the republic.
Basayev is determined not to give in to Russian domination.
SOUNDBITE (Russian):
"The people of Russia are simple slaves and they themselves don't want to be free of slavehood, they are crazy, they like to suffer and be
tormented, and they like their role as slave but why should I be a
slave?"
SUPERCAPTION: Shamil Basayev, Chechen rebel
Basayev and his men say they were ready to disarm but the Russians
broke their agreement.
Now they say they will only give up their arms on the day the Russians leave Chechen territory.
SOUNDBITE (Russian):
"I want to live in freedom and for that they made me become a terrorist and gangster in the eyes of the world and they shouldn't have done that. But I know that before God and my people I am pure and that is all that matters to me."
Basayev and his men have fought for a year already to free themselves from Russia.
It appears they have no intention of giving up until they win.

RUSSIA: CHECHNYA: CHECHEN FIGHTERS READY FOR WAR
Russian/nat
As Russian troops move in on Grozny, Chechen fighters in the capital are steeling for a possible invasion.
They are digging themselves in and their commanders say they are ready for war.
And despite the Russian deployment, the Chechen president remains defiant.
In an exclusive interview with APTV, General Dzhokhar Dudayev warned of a bloodbath if Russia didn't pull out.
Tanks roll through the streets in a show of strength as Chechen troops prepare themselves for a possible showdown with Russian forces.
Local authorities said a regiment of one-thousand men had been formed 45 kilometers outside Grozny.
The troops are equipped with tanks, armoured personnel carriers and helicopters.
The Chechen president has repeatedly stated his people are determined to fight for their independence.
Chechnya, a mostly Muslim republic in the Caucasus Mountains of southern Russia, declared independence in 1991.
Moscow has refused to recognise the claim and has backed Chechen rebels opposed to President Dzhokhar Dudayev, a former Soviet air force general.
Russia regards the Chechen government as a criminal regime.
It claims the Chechen fighters are simply gangsters and terrorists.
And on Sunday, President Yeltsin said the military operation was aimed at protecting Russian civilians in Chechnya from "armed extremism".
Yeltsin sent in troops before, in late 1991, after Chechnya declared its independence during the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The Russian forces retreated in face of stiff opposition.
And despite the latest Russian invasion, the Chechen president remains defiant.
In an exclusive interview with APTV, he warned the international community of the possibility of a bloodbath if Russia didn't pull out of his republic.

He decides who disappears and who lives. As stated by one of the activists featured in the film: "Chechnya is North Korea in the middle of the Russian Federation." The war, which left thousands dead and missing, is not openly discussed. The film mixes the moving stories of those who search in vain for their loved ones with footage capturing the polished surface of a country that is inwardly restless and unhappy.

Omar the Chechen interview
Born in 1986 to a Christian father and Georgian Chechen Muslim mother, he had fought in the 2008 war and rose to the rank of sergeant in an intelligence unit. Two years later he was dismissed for health reasons.
It was during his subsequent prison term that his religious faith deepened and upon his release he returned home and burned his family’s pictures of himself, according to his father Temur.
Batirashvili then left Georgia to resurface as Omar al-Shishani, or “Omar the Chechen,” leading dozens of his compatriots and others in the siege of Aleppo in northern Syria. He soon after assumed control of Islamic State’s northern forces.
As tales of the fighting trickle home, he’s become a role model for some in Pankisi. One young man in his late teens who called himself “Vaynakh,” a word Chechens use for themselves, and would give no other information about himself for fear of reprisal, said he’s eager to join returning Chechens to fight the Russians. Vaynakh said that’s a dream he’s had ever since he first shot an assault rifle as a young boy.
“I would go fight,” he said. “They fight for the name of God and for the name of the brotherhood to revenge for Chechnya. They will come back better prepared and more powerful. I’m sure of it.”
When the Islamic State commander known as “Omar the Chechen” called to tell his father they’d routed the Iraqi army and taken the city of Mosul, he added a stark message: Russia would be next.
“He said ‘don’t worry dad, I’ll come home and show the Russians,’” Temur Batirashvili said from his home in Georgia’s Pankisi Gorge, on the border with the Russian region of Chechnya. “I have many thousands following me now and I’ll get more. We’ll have our revenge against Russia.”
Al-Shishani is the tactical mastermind behind Islamic State’s swift military gains on the ground in Iraq’s Anbar province, west of Baghdad, including an encirclement in which his forces killed as many as 500 Iraqi troops and captured 180 more near Fallujah, according to Daveed Gartenstein-Ross, senior fellow at the Washington-based Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

RUSSIA: CHECHNYA: DZHOKHAR DUDAYEV DEPORTATION CLAIM
Russian/nat
Chechnya's President on Saturday claimed he had proof the Russians have long been planning mass deportations of his people.
Speaking exclusively to APTV in the nearly besieged capital of Grozny, he produced documents which he alleged were signed by the Russian Prime Minister on December 1st.
He also said the Russians would have to resort to nuclear weapons to defeat Chechen forces.
While two of the Chechen army's few tanks patrolled outside the Presidential palace, inside President Dzhokhar Dudayev was ready to produce his supposed proof of Russia's plans for the Chechen people.
This document, he claimed, was outwardly an economic report on Chechnya. However, pointing to one of the pages he read the following, supposedly written by the Russian Immigration Service:
SOUNDBITE:
"In the next month we need to establish refugee camps on the Chechen territory."
SUPER CAPTION: Dzhokhar Dudayev, President of Chechnya
"Why?" - he asks in surprise.
He said the documents were signed by Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin on December 1st.
However, he wouldn't say how he got the papers or release a copy.
Sounding defiant, though, Dudayev said the Russians would never defeat the Chechens short of using nuclear weapons.
SOUNDBITE:
"The Russian government has nothing more to use against the Chechen people except nuclear weapons."
SUPER CAPTION: Dzhokhar Dudayev, President of Chechnya
Also in the Presidential palace is vice president Zelenkhan Yanderbiev, who, in another exclusive interview with APTV, was claiming some successes against Russian forces attacking the Chechen capital Grozny.
Yanderbiev, speaking from a bunker underneath the palace, said Chechen soldiers have succeeded in driving back the Russians in some areas.
He paints a grim picture of the overall situation, but says captured Russians are being treated well.
SOUNDBITE:
(Translation from Russian)
"During the night the fighting continued on all fronts, our forces experienced fierce opposition from Russian forces and in several places forced them back. At night, massed bombing continued over Grozny, there were many victims among the civilian population, whole families were wiped out in their homes."
(Cutaway)
"Not a single prisoner of war has been shot, we are continuing to uphold our responsibilities regarding international conventions"
SUPER CAPTION: Zelenkhan Yanderbiev, Vice President of Chechnya
The overnight bombing destroyed several more buildings, including the city's main toy shop and the capital is now without water or electricity.
With civilian casualties mounting, international and Russian criticism of the assault is growing.

20,000 Kadyrov’s soldiers are ready to kill Ukrainians if Putin will give an order.

More than 100,000 people marched through the capital of the Chechen Republic, Grozny, to celebrate the 62nd birthday of Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday.
Columns of young people, some carrying flags and portraits of Putin, paraded along Ahmad Kadyrov Avenue towards central square in front of City Hall. Participants were dressed in specific colours which when seen from above formed the Russian and Chechen flags, stretching for 2.5 kilometres (1.5 miles).
Chechen leader, Ramzan Kadyrov, led the procession carrying a portrait of Putin and was followed by other officials. This was followed by a concert on Grozny central square.

Police waged hours-long gun-battles with Islamic militants on Thursday.
The new violence raised fears of more attacks in Chechnya and widening unrest in the rest of Russia's volatile North Caucasus region.

One fighter, who gave his name as Timur, said they had held a meeting in the Chechen capital Grozny back in May 2014, and 38 men had agreed to travel to eastern Ukraine to fight.
The civil war in eastern Ukraine is believed to have drawn hundreds of Chechen fighters loyal to the pro-Russian government in Grozny to the side of the rebels.
There are also reports of Chechens fighting on the side of the Ukrainian government against pro-Russian forces.

President Yeltsin met this morning with his Security Council - and at a news conference afterwards , reporters were told that time was running out for the Chechens.
It would appear that General Dudayev's last chance to surrender and disarm has come and gone.

Aftermath of attack by militants that killed 20 people in the Chechen capital
Residents in the Chechen capital of Grozny removed rubble from several damaged buildings on Friday, following an attack by militants that killed at least 20 people.
The battle left the ten-story Press House, which housed local media offices, gutted by a blazing fire that also spread to a nearby street market.
Police waged hours-long gun-battles with Islamic militants on Thursday.
The new violence raised fears of more attacks in Chechnya and widening unrest in the rest of Russia's volatile North Caucasus region.
The insurgents in Chechnya and other Caucasus regions want to create an independent state governed by their strict interpretation of Islamic law.

Chechen fighters join struggle alongside pro-Russian fighters in east
A group of Muslim Chechen fighters in eastern Ukraine said on Sunday they had joined the civil war there on the side of the pro-Russian rebels.
Commenting on the recent attacks in Paris which have left 20 people dead, including three gunmen, a fighter called Timur said, "There is nothing in Islam which would force a person to be so violent."
Another fighter, Alehan, condemned the murder of civilians, but also said that the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, which was attacked on Wednesday leaving 12 people dead, should "be careful with the feelings of billions of people".
Charlie Hebdo published a cartoon caricature of the Prophet Muhammad, which is forbidden in Islam.
Fighting in eastern Ukraine was ongoing despite a ceasefire reached in September, because the two sides have failed to agree on a line of division to create a buffer zone.
More than 4,700 people have been killed there since April.

Concord among your peoples is a priceless wealth!
There is no mother, but you, to caress the people of Chechnya.
Extolling you, we beg to bless
Our life and our death in Motherland’s hearth!
Our ancestors’ souls come down to the top of Bashlam.

Russians and other officials gathered on Tuesday to pay their respects at one of the stations hit in yesterday''s suicide bombings in Moscow''s metro system.
Mourners, including US ambassador to Russia, John Beyrle, left flowers at a makeshift memorial in the Lubyanka metro station.
"As the US Ambassador I would like to say with all my heart that the American people stands together at this moment with the people of Russia," Beyrle said.
The blasts shocked a country that had grown accustomed to such violence being confined to a restive southern corner - and marked the return of acts of terror to the everyday lives of Muscovites after a six-year break.
As senior politicians call for the return of the death penalty, the attacks have raised fears that civil liberties may again be sacrificed under the pretext of fighting terrorism - a charge Putin faced during his eight-year presidency.
As president, Putin consolidated control in the wake of the 2004 Beslan school hostage crisis by abolishing the election of regional governors, and came to power in 1999 promising a strong crackdown on rebels in Russia''s North Caucasus.
The attacks provide a serious challenge to the Russian government, and in particular its claims to have pacified the region.

STORYLINE:
Chechen rebels claimed responsibility Wednesday for blowing up a high-speed Russian train last week, an attack that killed 26 people, injured scores of others and raised fears of a fresh wave of terror attacks.
The Chechen claim, posted on a Web site sympathetic to the militants, could buttress the suspicions of Russian investigators, who have been tracing the attack to Islamist separatists in Russia's volatile North Caucasus region.
The separatist statement, issued on behalf of Chechen separatist leader Doku Umarov, claimed Friday's bombing of a Moscow-St. Petersburg express train was carried out on his orders.
"We declare that this operation was prepared and carried out ... pursuant to the order of the Emir of Caucasus Emirate," or Umarov, it said.
Umarov is thought to head a network of separatist cells across the mainly Muslim North Caucasus region that are fighting to break free from Moscow's rule.
The rebels are blamed for regular attacks on law enforcement officials in the area's five autonomous republics since the end of two bloody separatist wars in Chechnya.
Russian authorities have said the train's derailment was an act of terrorism and traces of explosives and a crater were found at the disaster site.
Government officials were among those killed in the train bombing.
The bombing was the first deadly terrorist attack outside the North Caucasus since the bombings of two airliners and a Moscow subway station attack in 2004.
The attack has struck a nerve in Russian society.
More than a thousand people also gathered in St. Petersburg on Wednesday for a similar protest.

RUSSIA: CHECHNYA: DISARM DEADLINE FOR CHECHEN FORCES
Russian/Nat
Moscow is adopting an increasingly hard line with Chechnya, as the hours tick down to its midnight ( Saturday) deadline for Chechen forces to disarm.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister, Nikolai Yegorov, has threatened a missile attack on strategic targets in the capital, Grozny, if the Chechens don't lay down their weapons.
President Yeltsin met this morning with his Security Council - and at a news conference afterwards , reporters were told that time was running out for the Chechens.
It would appear that General Dudayev's last chance to surrender and disarm has come and gone.
An emergency sitting this morning of the Russian Security Council, dominated by hardline ministers, has decided that the midnight deadline stands.
SOUNDBITE: (RUSSIAN - )
"A final decision has been made that there will be no extension of the deadline for voluntarily giving up arms. This is a decision of the Security Council and of the President of the Russian Federation. There will be no extension. There are only hours left to act sensibly at this historic moment."
SUPER CAPTION: OLEG LOBOV, SECRETARY RUSSIAN SECURITY COUNCIL
Lobov explained that the Russian army would not act indiscriminately if it was ordered to take military action and had identified strategic areas which it would target.
SOUNDBITE: (RUSSIAN - )
"And the suggestion has been made to all unarmed civilians - women, children , old people - those who are not armed, to get out and leave those areas. And there has been an order from the Security Council and the President to the leaders of Russian structures (meaning the army - Ed) to guarantee the normal evacuation of unarmed citizens."
SUPER CAPTION: OLEG LOBOV
But the Russian government was still holding out some hope that Dudayev may talk even though Lobov was told by journalists that Moscow's offer of talks had been rejected
SOUNDBITE: This is very regretful. I have told you the only
chance that is left. That is if there is a meeting then we would
need to hear just what his position is. If he is for the people, if
he is for stabilization of the situation, for the peaceful
resolution of the conflict, then he must give us a document on
ceasing military activity and on disarming. Any other document of
course will not serve as the basis for calling off any measures to
be taken by the Russian authorities, state structures and by those
armed forces which have been brought in to Chechen territory
SUPER CAPTION: OLEG LOBOV
So with only hours left before the deadline runs out it would
appear that the patience of the Russian government is wearing thin
and that General Dudayev may have seen his last chance of averting
bloodshed disappear.

RUSSIA: CHECHNYA: DISARM DEADLINE FOR CHECHEN FORCES
Russian/nat
Moscow is adopting an increasingly hard line with Chechnya, as the clock ticks down to tonight's ( Saturday) midnight deadline (2100G) for Chechen forces to disarm.
Deputy Prime Minister, Nikolai Yegorov, has threatened a missile attack on strategic targets in the capital, Grozny, if the Chechens don't lay down their weapons.
Russian officials have also asked all foreign journalists to get out of Chechnya. Foreign correspondents are responding with complaints of Soviet-style censorship.
In the rebel republic of Chechnya, young men are preparing to sacrifice their lives. These Chechen troops say they won't disarm.
Despite an invitation to take part in last minute talks with the Russian military, Chechen President Dzhokhar Dudayev declined to attend.
A team of human rights observers from the Russian Parliament inspected a village near Grozny where Russian rockets have killed civilians and demolished homes.
Russian soldiers and tanks have dug in to the hills surrounding Chechnya's capital city Grozny. Most people in the area however expect they will be pounded by the Russian airforce first.
Officials in Moscow have also given foreign journalists a deadline. they have until midnight to clear out of the conflict zone. Russia has been embarrassed by media reports on civilian casualties and hesitant Russian soldiers.
A secretary to Russia's Security Council spoke to journalists at a press conference in Moscow, explaining that this last ultimatum really was Dudayev's last chance to surrender.

RUSSIA: CHECHNYA: GROZNY: CHECHEN DEMONSTRATION
Russian/Nat
Peace talks resumed in the Chechen capital Grozny Saturday between Russian negotiators and Chechen rebels.
The talks had almost been derailed by the murder of eight Chechen civilians Friday, allegedly by Russian soldiers.
Russian President Boris Yeltsin says he will personally head an inquiry into the killings.
Hundreds of angry Chechens demonstrated outside the Russian Chechen peace talks in Grozny Saturday, accusing Russian soldiers of murdering an innocent Chechen family Friday and demanding independence for their small republic.
Despite all the killing that has gone on in Russia's six-month war with breakaway Chechnya, Friday's killings of eight people including four children on a farm north of Grozny touched a nerve and set off impassioned demonstrations.
The murders came during peace talks and an unofficial ceasefire, and allegedly resulted from a looting raid.
Today was declared a day of mourning in Chechnya in honour of the victims.
The Chechens had threatened to cancel the talks following the brutal murders.
But peace talks between Russian and Chechen negotiators reopened Saturday morning in the Chechen capital, Grozny.
The talks have generally been making progress, with both the Chechen and Russian sides making concessions.
Some of the victims of Friday's attack were buried yesterday and more were buried today.
Most Chechens are Muslims, and their religion dictates that the dead be buried quickly.
Chechen men prayed above the graves in this rapidly-filling Chechen cemetery.
News reports have cited Russian military officials calling the murders a provocation by fanatic Chechen rebels trying to wreck the peace talks.
But Arkady Volsky, one of the Russian negotiators, said the talks will not be stopped.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian).
Some will go to the funerals, but the rest will work. We have more to think about than funerals.
SUPER CAPTION: Arkady Volsky, Russian Negotiator.
The talks in Grozny are being moderated by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which has taken an active role in trying to bring the two warring sides to a settlement.
Russian President Boris Yeltsin says he will personally head an inquiry into Friday's killings.
But Yeltsin's promise of a full and fair inquiry may not be enough to calm today's frenzied demonstrators.

RUSSIA: CHECHNYA: NORTH OSSETIA: CHECHEN REFUGEES AID ARRIVAL
English/Nat
The first plane load of aid for Chechen refugees has arrived in nearby North Ossetia.
It's been delayed a month but U-N officials say they're delighted to have got vital supplies in.
The plane, carrying 40 tons of blankets, plastic sheeting, kitchen sets and soap, had been stuck for more than a week in Moscow while UN officials waited for permission to fly.
The Russian authorities had given permission to distribute aid to refugees from the war in Chechnya at the end of December.
At the UNHCR office in North Ossetia officials expressed frustration at the delays.
SOUNDBITE:
Sadly we have not been given freedom of movement. If we had freedom of movement then we could move around and do a complete assessment. Our knowledge so far is that there are many displaced people from the Chechen crisis, there are many within Chechnya itself that have been displaced, but there undoubtedly Chechens living in Ossetia and Dagestan who need aid. It is our task to assess the magnitude of the needs and to get some support out
here.
SUPER CAPTION: Larry Hollingworth, UNHCR Senior Field Officer
The supplies were taken to an airport about 50 miles southwest of the Chechen capital, Grozny.
SOUNDBITE:
We would like to be able to send part of that load into Ingushetia but if we ourselves have no freedom of movement I am not quite sure how we can take our aid into Ingushetia. But not only that, it hinders our complete assessment mission.
SUPER CAPTION: Larry Hollingworth, UNHCR Senior Field Officer
And Hollingworth says another planeload is expected within 48 hours.
An estimated 300,000 people have been displaced in Chechnya and neighbouring territories since Russian sent troops in five weeks ago.

RUSSIA: RELIEF SUPPLIES ARRIVE FOR CHECHEN REFUGEES
English/Nat
The first load of humanitarian aid from the United Nations arrived in Dagestan Saturday.
The relief supplies are intended for the tens of thousands of refugees who've fled the war in neighbouring Chechnya.
The 47 tons of oil, sugar and flour arrived at Makhachkala airport on Saturday afternoon.
The relief supplies will be distributed to refugee camps in the area over the next few days.
Saturday's flight was the first to Dagestan, but more are to follow.
SOUNDBITE:
"The first UNHCR plane arrived in Dagestan. It contains forty seven tons of flour, of sugar, of oil and of soap and it is for the people of Chechnya who are displaced here in Dagestan. It is the first aircraft. We have a second aircraft arriving soon which is from UNICEF which contains medicine and children's clothes and we hope that these two planes will be the first of many to support the people who need aid here. "
SUPER CAPTION: Larry Hollingworth - Spokesman United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
Some 45-thousand people have fled from the beleaguered Chechen republic to the safety of neighbouring Dagestan.
It is thought up to 15-hundred more are arriving in the area every day.
Two previous UN flights landed at North Ossetia to the west of Chechnya.
Those supplies were aimed for Ingushetia, the republic east of Chechnya where there are an estimated 100-thousand displaced people.

RUSSIA: CHECHNYA: GUDERMES: CHECHEN HOSPITAL
Russian/Nat
Russian helicopter gunships attacked several villages west of Grozny Monday morning, killing a number of people.
APTV was at a hospital in the Gudermes district when one of the victims was brought in.
But the man died, despite desperate attempts by doctors to save him.
The victim, 26-year-old Vismagomed, was wounded in Argun during an aerial bombardment carried out by five Russian helicopter gunships.
Fellow Chechen fighters rushed him to the nearest hospital - the Gudermes district hospital 21 kilometres away.
Doctors at the hospital tried desperately to keep Vismagomed alive.
But he was too badly wounded and even heart massage couldn't save the fighter from Serzhen Yurt.
UPSOUND:
"Stop filming, there is no point in filming anymore."
Although casualty estimates vary wildly, thousands of people are believed to have been killed since December 11th when Moscow sent troops into the breakaway republic.

RUSSIA: RUSSIANS FEAR THE NEXT CHECHEN REBELS TERRORIST ATTACK
Russian/Nat
Russians are taking security into their own hands after last week's siege in Budyonnovsk shook their faith in the government's ability to keep them safe.
Gun sales in Moscow are reportedly up as Russians live in fear of the next terrorist strike by rebel Chechens.
Last week's siege in Budyonnovsk shocked the Russian government into tightening security in the capital, but the horrifying incident which left more than 100 dead has shaken people's faith in national security.
Although military checkpoints have been set up around the city, Russians now feel they may be safer with their own gun in their hands.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
"Our militia can't protect our citizens and therefore people want to defend themselves against hooligans and criminals and so they buy the weapons to arm themselves."
SUPERCAPTION: Vitaliy Gadrani, Manager, Kolchuga Gun Shop
Gadrani says gun sales have gone up since last week's siege and plenty of people are clearly thinking about arming themselves if not actually buying immediately.
The war in Chechnya has rocked the popularity of President Boris Yeltsin's government and alienated many of his former supporters.
And a no-confidence vote in Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin's administration on Wednesday further undermined people's confidence.
But still many Russians are skeptical about changing the status quo now.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
"Now he (Yeltsin) has lost the trust of the people and it's because the war is continuing, there are many conflicts and immediately people have lost faith in the government. Everything depends on their policies.
SUPERCAPTION: Pavel Lebed, Army Captain
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
"Now the government is working and should be allowed to continue in power until the end of its term. It's better not to change horses midstream. Chernomyrdin is handling the situation correctly."
SUPERCAPTION: Vasiliy Merkushev, Construction Worker
The government, under fire for its handling of the Budyonnovsk hostage crisis, may face another no-confidence vote which could lead to parliament being dissolved and Yeltsin calling new elections.
But Yeltsin's supporters say the show of dissatisfaction by the opposition is nothing more than a political move to undermine the government.
SOUNDBITE:
This decision is a political decision intended to destablise the situation in the country. As you all probably know there's been no serious discussion or serious analysis of the government's work. Criticisms of the government are extremely contradictory this was shown not only by the discussions but also by the vote itself.
SUPERCAPTION: Georgiy Satarov, Yeltsin's political advisor
The hostage incident in Budyonnovsk has crystallised the opposition, but so far it looks like Yeltsin may gamble on lawmakers not being ready for new elections now.

Dagestan - Chechen Refugees Welcomed In Dagestan
More Chechens are fleeing the fighting in their breakaway republic
every day (11-12/1). They are joining the more than 50 thousand
refugees already in the neighbouring republic of Dagestan. A few small supply operations have been organised by the International Committee of the Red Cross and French aid organisation, Medecins sans Frontieres (MSF). Mostly, the fleeing Chechens are relying on the strong solidarity of the Chechen community living in Dagestan. In the small town of Khasavyurt, on the border with Chechnya, which is the closest safe city to Grozny, the refugees are immediately registered and helped
by the local Chechen authorities. After a few formalities, they
receive food collected by the Chechens or from the Islamic relief
associations and the Red Cross. Chechen volunteers are providing a
place to stay for the refugees and immediate help.
