On the modern day side, you're an Initiate working through his sequence of memories to uncover the Sage he encounters -- the Grand Master Templar that has precusor DNA that Abstergo is trying to obtain to gain power of the triple helix via The Phoenix Project. The decision to make missions open-ended gives the perfectionist player (like myself) hours of content. The new engine allows for more freedom in traversing structures quickly. The core mechanics will always remain the same, so the story has to pick up the interest for veteran players of the series and it succeeds. The jump to the next-gen graphics is impressive as it transitions from cinematic to gameplay seamlessly to aid in recreating the time period as authentically as possible.
