A single-party state, one-party state, one-party system, or single-party system is a type of state in which a single political party has the right to form the government, usually based on the existing constitution. All other parties are either outlawed or allowed to take only a limited and controlled participation in elections. Sometimes the term de facto single-party state is used to describe a dominant-party system that, unlike the single-party state, allows democratic multiparty elections, but the existing practices or balance of political power effectively prevent the opposition from winning the elections.

Keeping power in a single party state: Mussolini and Castro
Fascist dictator Mussolini and Marxist leader Castro show remarkable similarities in their methods to ensure that they would not lose their power. Secret police, militarising society, and imprisoning opponents were balanced with instigating campaigns for economic improvements and installing pride in their subjects by extending national influence to other countries. One leader entered retirement as an old man, the other was killed by his subjects and hung at an Esso gas station, together with his mistress.

The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is a collegiate athletic conference in the United States in which its fifteen member universities compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA's) Division I, with its football teams competing in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest levels for athletic competition in US-based collegiate sports. The ACC sponsors competition in twenty-five sports with many of its member institutions' athletic programs held in high regard nationally. ACC teams and athletes have claimed dozens of national championships in multiple sports throughout the conference's history. Generally, the ACC's top athletes and teams in any particular sport in a given year are considered to be among the top collegiate competitors in the nation. The ACC is considered to be one of the six collegiate power conferences, all of which enjoy extensive media coverage and automatic qualifying for their football champion into the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). With the advent of the College Football Playoff in 2014, the ACC will be one of five conferences with a contractual tie-in to an "access bowl", the successors to the BCS.
Founded in 1953 in Greensboro, North Carolina, by seven universities located in the South Atlantic States, the conference added additional members in late 1953, 1979, 1991, 2004, and 2013. The 2004 and 2013 additions extended the conference's footprint into the Northeast and Midwest. The most recent expansion in 2013 saw the additions of the University of Notre Dame, the University of Pittsburgh, and Syracuse University. In 2012, the University of Maryland's Board of Regents voted to withdraw from the ACC to join the Big Ten Conference. On November 28, 2012, the ACC's Council of Presidents voted unanimously to invite the University of Louisville as a full member, replacing Maryland.

Title: Gov′t confirms plan to publish single, state-authorized history textbook
The South Korean government has made it official.
The education ministry will oversee the publication of a single, state-authored history textbook for the nation′s middle and high school students.
Our Ji Myung-kil fills starts us off.
Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn and Education Minister Hwang Woo-yea called on the public to support the government′s textbook plan.
Speaking at the government complex in Seoul, the prime minister said they want to provide students with history textbooks that are not biased... and present what they call a proper description of Korean history.
"We cannot teach our children using history textbooks that are distorted and biased. The government will publish textbooks that are based on objective fact and that are faithful to Korea′s constitutional values."
The prime minister went on to say that the government cannot rely on the current system,... in which eight private companies publish history textbooks... pending government approval.
"Although the government recommends private history textbook publishers to revise distorted contents... they have a tendency to refuse the suggestions... even filing lawsuits against the government."
Education Minister Hwang Woo-yea sought to reassure the public about concerns that the government would try to whitewash modern Korean history.
He said the public has no reason to worry.
"Considering Korea′s social maturity, it would be unthinkable to publish history textbooks with favorable descriptions of Japanese collaborators or the country′s military dictators and related events."
By mid-November, the education ministry hopes to put together a team of history scholars and teachers who will write the books.
The National Institute of Korean History will be in charge of making the historical content neutral... and ensuring the books have a balanced perspective.
Ji Myung-kil, Arirang News.
Title: Standoff between rival parties over history textbook deepens
And how is parliament reacting to the government′s decision to stick to its history textbook plan?
The opposition bloc has been adamant that the government change the plan, but with today′s announcement, the party has vowed to continue its protests.
For more, we turn to our Park Ji-won.
Lawmakers from the New Politics Alliance for Democracy party have been protesting at the National Assembly since Monday night,... when the government′s decision to move forward with its textbook plan was made official.
Party leader Moon Jae-in characterized the move as dictatorial.
"Our party will stand with the public. We will confront this group that opposes liberal democracy... and we will confront dictatorship. We will protect academic freedom and neutrality in education."
Party floor leader Lee Jong-kul also criticized the government for not taking enough time to collect opposing views

Controversy has also erupted over the government′s push for a single state-published textbook for all middle and high schools.
Neither of the country′s two rival parties is backing down from its position.
Our Ji Myung-kil has more.
The floor leader of the ruling Saenuri Party voiced his party′s concerns about the history textbooks currently used by middle and high school students in Korea.
″For example, the Korean War was carefully planned by North Korean founder Kim Il-sung, with support from the Soviet Union and China. But some textbooks don′t mention that... and even avoid saying it was a North Korean invasion.″
Speaking at the National Assembly on Thursday, the floor leader went on to say that some textbooks leave out important historical facts, such as the bombing of Korean Air flight 858 in 1987, North Korea′s torpedo attack on the South Korean warship Cheonan in 2010 and the North′s repeated threats to the maritime border off South Korea′s western coast.
He said the answer is a well-balanced, single textbook, which he said is needed to eliminate factual errors and ideological bias.
The main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy disagrees, and has called for a full-fledged debate on the issue.
″We propose holding a public hearing on the history textbook issue within the month. The rival parties and the government must agree on neutral figures who can serve on a panel of experts. A social consensus needs to be reached before a single, state-published textbook is adopted.″
The party′s floor leader condemned the conservative government for what he said is a step backward into authoritarian territory, saying a majority of citizens, historians and teachers oppose the push for a single, state-authored textbook.
The issue is a sensitive one for Korea, as authoritarian governments once used history textbooks to control the public′s perception of history.
″The ruling Saenuri Party and the presidential office are expected to make a decision on the issue, and the fate of the nation′s history texts, at a cabinet meeting next week.″

as a part of Fujian Province and islands the ROC controls in the South China Sea as a part of Hainan Province. These claims are controversial because of the complex political status of Taiwan.
Covering approximately 9.6 million square kilometers, China is the world's second-largest country by land area,[18] and either the third or fourth-largest by total area, depending on the method of measurement.[i] China's landscape is vast and diverse, ranging from forest steppes and the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts in the arid north to subtropical forests in the wetter south. The Himalaya, Karakoram, Pamir and Tian Shan mountain ranges separate China from South and Central Asia. The Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, the third- and sixth-longest in the world, run from the Tibetan Plateau to the densely populated eastern seaboard. China's coastline along the Pacific Ocean is 14,500 kilometres (9,000 mi) long, and is bounded by the Bohai, Yellow, East and South China Seas.
China is considered a cradle of civilization, with its known history beginning with an ancient civilization – one of the world's earliest – that flourished in the fertile basin of the Yellow River in the North China Plain. For millennia, China's political system was based on hereditary monarchies, known as dynasties, beginning with the semi-mythological Xia of the Yellow River basin (c. 2800 BCE). Since 221 BCE, when the Qin Dynasty first conquered several states to form a Chinese empire, the country has expanded, fractured and been reformed numerous times. The Republic of China (ROC) overthrew the last dynasty in 1911, and ruled the Chinese mainland until 1949. After the surrender of the Empire of Japan in World War II, the Communist Party defeated the nationalist Kuomintang in mainland China and established the People's Republic of China in Beijing on 1 October 1949, while the Kuomintang relocated the ROC government to its present capital of Taipei.
China had the largest and most complex economy in the world for most of the past two thousand years, during which it has seen cycles of prosperity and decline.[19][20] Since the introduction of economic reforms in 1978, China has become one of the world's fastest-growing major economies. As of 2014, it is the world's second-largest economy by nominal total GDP and largest by purchasing power parity (PPP). China is also the world's largest exporter and second-largest importer of goods.[21] China is a recognized nuclear weapons state and has the world's largest standing army, with the second-largest defence budget.[22][23] The PRC has been a United Nations member since 1971, when it replaced the ROC as a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council. China is also a member of numerous formal and informal multilateral organizations, including the WTO, APEC, BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the BCIM and the G-20. China is a great power and a major regional power within Asia, and has been characterized as a potential superpower by a number of commentators

The PRC is a single-party state governed by the Chinese Communist Party, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing.[16] It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces, five autonomous regions, four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing), and two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau). The PRC also claims the territories governed by the Republic of China (ROC), a separate political entity today commonly known as Taiwan, as a part of its territory, which includes the island of Taiwan as Taiwan Province, Kinmen and Matsu
as a part of Fujian Province and islands the ROC controls in the South China Sea as a part of Hainan Province.

China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a sovereign state in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion.
China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a sovereign state in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. The PRC is a single-party state governed by the Communist Party of China, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing. It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces, five autonomous regions, four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing), and two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau). These claims are controversial because of the complex political status of Taiwan

China had the largest and most complex economy in the world for most of the past two thousand years, during which it has seen cycles of prosperity and decline.Since the introduction of economic reforms in 1978, China has become one of the world's fastest-growing major economies. As of 2014, it is the world's second-largest economy by nominal total GDP and largest by purchasing power parity (PPP). China is a recognized nuclear weapons state and has the world's largest standing army, with the second-largest defence budget. The PRC has been a United Nations member since 1971, when it replaced the ROC as a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council. The word "China" is derived from the Persian word Chīn (چین), which in turn is thought to have been derived from the Sanskrit word Cīna (चीन).Cīna was first used in early Hindu scripture, including the Mahābhārata (5th century BCE) and the Laws of Manu (2nd century BCE) The word "China" itself was first recorded in 1516 in the journal of the Portuguese explorer Duarte Barbosa. The journal was translated and published in England in 1555.The traditional theory, proposed in the 17th century by Martino Martini and supported by many later scholars, is that the word China and its earlier related forms are ultimately derived from the state of "Qin" (秦), the westernmost of the Chinese kingdoms during the Zhou dynasty which unified China to form the Qin dynasty.Other suggestions for the derivation of "China" however exist.

The PRC also claims the territories governed by the Republic of China (ROC), a separate political entity today commonly known as Taiwan, as a part of its territory, which includes the island of Taiwan as Taiwan ,Province, Kinmen and Matsu as a part of Fujian Province and islands the ROC controls in the South China Sea as a part of Hainan Province and Guangdong Province. These claims are controversial because of the complex political status of Taiwan
Covering approximately 9.6 million square kilometers, China is the world's second-largest country by land area, and either the third or fourth-largest by total area, depending on the method of measurement.China's landscape is vast and diverse, ranging from forest steppes and the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts in the arid north to subtropical forests in the wetter south.
China is also the world's largest exporter and second-largest importer of goods. China is a recognized nuclear weapons state and has the world's largest standing army, with the second-largest defence budget. The PRC has been a United Nations member since 1971, when it replaced the ROC as a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council. China is also a member of numerous formal and informal multilateral organizations, including the WTO, APEC, BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the BCIM and the G-20. China is a great power and a major regional power within Asia, and has been characterized as a potential superpower by a number of commentators

NEWSCENTER
The Korean government announces that it will publish history textbooks for use in schools from 2017... taking a necessary step to strip current teaching of what it says is ideological bias.
Tensions peak with the U.S. and China... in the South China Sea. The United States says its naval operations near territory claimed by China are designed to defend freedom of navigation in international waters.
It′s unlikely that the Chinese economy is headed for a hard landing... BUT Korea′s exports will be hard hit IF the nation′s largest trading partner slows down below a certain level... that′s according to the Bank of Korea.
Good evening to our viewers here in Korea and hello to those around the world.
Title: Gov′t confirms plan to publish single, state-authorized history textbook
The South Korean government has made it official.
It will publish history textbooks for use in the nation′s middle and high schools fro 2017. That is a necessary step to strip current teaching of its "ideological bias′ - according to the Seoul government.
The move to stop use of textbooks written by private-sector scholars and issued by private publishers have capped weeks of debate in this country.
First, on the government′s announcement today, here′s our Ji Myung-kil.
