The vehicles travelled in gradually got smaller and smaller, bumpier and bumpier - finally 5 hrs on a speedboat. Looking back the first day was relatively luxurious - a local bus with rattling windows, plastic seats filling the aisles and not a farang in sight. Lots of spit flying past the window as this seems to be the local habit, which isn't very pleasant if you're in the seat behind with the window open!!! The road was little better than a mud track so we did fly around a bit but the bus stayed on it and in one piece. And the great thing about this bumpy journey was that it was only 3 hrs - 2 hrs less than we thought. We ended up in a place called Sainyabuli (many ways to spell this) - which is the capital of the Sainyabuli province but consists of a few roads and a colourful market (not a falang in sight). We stayed in a friendly place that helped us get to the bus station the next morning - and they invited us to a lau-lao (local whisky made from rice) that they'd obviously been drinking like water with the evening family meal. In fact, the bus station is perhaps a bit grand a word for this space. It was a bit of a field (without grass) that had a <b>...</b>
