CN Rail blockade ends peacefully near Portage la Prairie

A handful of demonstrators ended their blockade of the main CN Rail line crossing the Yellowhead Highway, just north of the Trans-Canada Highway. Around 6:00 pm the demonstrators called off blockade after about 6 hours of halting train traffic.

this train is based at the muskoka heritage place,Huntsville,Ontario ,Canada,,it was made in 1920,,,its full name is Huntsville and Muskoka Lakes Potage Flyer,,, it goes out about 1 mile is manually turned around and than comes back,,short ride ,,but lots of fun!! p..s,,, my son (Brennen)was the assistnant coductor,, the conductor in the white beard is my Dad,(Don sr),believe it or not,he also plays santa at christmas time,,

Loram Rail Grinder and BNSF 6-Unit Power Move at Portage 4/12/2010

A Loram Rail Grinder and some other MoW equipment is seen on the east side of Portage, while an unusually large contingent of BNSF locomotives from the Columbia coal train waits. Rail Line blockade west of Portage la Prairie. January 16th, 2013

Protesters blocked a railway line just west of Portage la Prairie. the blockade is part of the "National Day of Action", from Idle No More. Former Roseau River First Nation Chief Terry Nelson, is a part of the protest, and says they'd like to keep the protest going over the next few days. Nelson says they decided to stage the protest along the rail line, because of the billions of dollars worth of product, that is shipped every day. he says action like this will make the leaders of commerce, take notice.

BNSF Power on Columbia Coal Duty at Portage in January 2008

The Columbia Power Plant is located on the Canadian Pacific M&P; Branch just south of Portage. The coal trains that serve it (Trains 882 and 883) usually operate with Burlington Northern Santa Fe power. On January 21, we catch SD70MACs BNSF 9753 and unpatched BN 9541, and ES44AC BNSF 6135, running light to pick up empties at the plant. They are first seen at the Wauona Trail crossing on the east side of Portage where the branch parallels the main, then at a crossing within the plant. A week later on January 28, a similar lashup including ES44AC BSNF 5934 and SD70MACs BNSF 9420 and BNSF 8879 is taped bringing a loaded train out to the plant. The first shot of this train is again at Wauona Trail, and the second is at the branch line's crossing of US Highway 51. Video by my dad.

Portage La Prairie Canadian Hot Spot

This is the intro to our program "Portage la Prairie - Canadian Hot Spot". Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, fifty five miles west of Winnipeg in the Assiniboine and Red River Valleys, is one of the best places in Canada to see freight trains. All transcontinental traffic between eastern and western Canada on Canadian National and Canadian Pacific passes through Portage La Prairie. Both railroads have secondary main lines to Edmonton including CNs aptly named Prairie North Line that diverge from the main lines on the west side of Portage. When grain or potash is moving, nearly 60 trains pass through Portage in 24 hours. And these are not just any trains. CN runs the heaviest manifest or mixed carload trains on the continent through Portage La Prairie and CPs trains are quite fascinating also. The power on these trains can be anything on each railroads roster from the newest AC and DC units to venerable SD40-2s. This program shows 24 hours of action on CP and then 24 more hours of action on CN in and around Portage La Prairie in October of 2008.

Two CP AC4400CW/GCFX SD40-2 Pairs Departing Portage 4/3/2008

My dad caught two trains leaving Portage Yard on April 3. Both of them were powered by a Canadian Pacific GE AC4400CW leading a leased GCFX SD40-2. First was CP 8541 leading GCFX 3077 on an eastbound manifest which started to depart but then came to a stop. Then CP 9654 and GCFX 3073 headed westbound with a unit ADM hopper train.

Amtrak #7 Comes Into Wisconsin Dells, CP 9781 WB at Portage 8/15/2008

Two westbound trains (we missed a third, Train 883 [coal empties], in between) on the evening of August 15, 2008. First it's Amtrak #7, the westbound Empire Builder, making its station stop at Wisconsin Dells. Then, just before dark, a westbound freight with AC4400CWs CP 9781 and 9542, which had been sitting in Portage East Siding, finally gets going and passes through Portage Yard.

Railfanning Ogden Dunes, Portage, Indiana, 26.06.12: South Shore Line, NS & Amtrak

Trains 1 and 2: Car #109 leads South Shore Line train #113 eastward, pulling out of the Portage/Ogden Dunes stop. This rush-hour train ran express from Van Buren Street in Chicago to Hegewisch, and will end its run in Michigan City. Meanwhile, a Norfolk Southern intermodal heads west on the adjacent Chicago Line, with two Dash-9s leading, as commuters leave the parking lot. Train 3: Car #107 leads South Shore train #15 at a good clip past the Ogden Dunes platform. This is the only train that skips this station. Train 4: Amtrak's train #370, the 'Pere Marquette', is running with just three Superliners today, as it zips through Ogden Dunes on its way to Grand Rapids, Michigan. P42DC #124 leads. Train 5: Car 103 leads an eight-car (with two trailers) train #115, the express to East Chicago and Michigan City. Train 6: P42s #36 and 126 bookend eastbound 'Wolverine' train #354, on its way to Detroit. Trains 7 and 8: NS C40-9W #9921, ES44DC #7699 and SD70 #2547 rush west with an intermodal for Chicago, as South Shore Line train #117, seen through the TOFC cars on the NS train, arrives at Ogden Dunes with a six-car set of new bilevels. Car #314 brings up the rear. Train 9: Amtrak's eastbound 'Capitol Limited races through with an amazing consist! P42s #134, 13, and Phase I Heritage #156 lead, with the full-length dome lounge 'Ocean View' immediately behind the power, then the usual consist of the train, with an ex-Pennsylvania Railroad private car tacked on the rear! Train 10 ...

A day in Portage, WI - part 1

It starts ominously. Fog hovering over the cooling pond. Threatening skies and a threatening silhouette of the power plant. An empty coal train. Its contents gone up in smoke. But no train movement. Even trackside my luck changes only marginally. A hi-rail pickup drifts by. I am waiting for the 2816. Then Amtrak shows up. And disappears. Followed by a freight. Slowly. Only one engine. Zero speed. Boring. As I meander toward downtown and bag a crane on a spur, another freight is announced by the scanner. Excitement builds as I head back to the same spot and bag it, too.
