The Irrawaddy dolphin, Orcaella brevirostris, is a euryhaline species of oceanic dolphin found in discontinuous subpopulations near sea coasts and in estuaries and rivers in parts of the Bay of Bengal and Southeast Asia.
The Irrawaddy dolphin was first described by Sir Richard Owen in 1866 based on a specimen found in 1852, in the harbour of Visakhapatnam on the east coast of India. It is one of two species in its genus. It has sometimes been listed variously in a family containing just itself and in Monodontidae and in Delphinapteridae. There is now widespread agreement to list it in the Delphinidae family.
Genetically, the Irrawaddy dolphin is closely related to the killer whale (orca). The species name brevirostris comes from the Latin meaning short-beaked. In 2005, genetic analysis showed the Australian snubfin dolphin found at the coast of northern Australia forms a second species in the Orcaella genus.
Overall, the dolphins' color is grey to dark slate blue, paler underneath, with no distinctive pattern. The dorsal fin is small and rounded behind the middle of the back. The forehead is high and rounded; the beak is lacking. The flippers are broad and rounded. The species found in Borneo, the finless porpoise, Neophocaena phocaenoides, is similar and has no back fin; the humpback dolphin, Sausa chinensis, is larger, has a longer beak and a larger dorsal fin.
Jackie Chan, SBS, MBE (born Chan Kong-sang, 陳港生; 7 April 1954) is a Hong Kong-born Chinesestuntman, actor, and director whose perilous acrobatic stunts and engaging physical humour made him an action-film star in Asia and helped to bring kung fu movies into the mainstream of American cinema. In his movies, he is known for his acrobatic fighting style, comic timing, use of improvised weapons, and innovative stunts. Jackie Chan has been acting since the 1960s and has appeared in over 100 films.
Chan has received stars on the Hong Kong Avenue of Stars and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. As a cultural icon, Chan has been referenced in various pop songs, cartoons, and video games. An operatically trained vocalist, Chan is also a Cantopop and Mandopop star, having released a number of albums and sung many of the theme songs for the films in which he has starred. In addition to acting, Chan pursued a career in the Hong Kong music industry, releasing a number of original albums beginning in 1984. He founded the Jackie Chan Charitable Organization in 1998, which, among other projects, offers scholarships to Hong Kong youths, and he worked as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF.

It’s possible to charter a boat or take a taxi to travel the 30km (20 miles) north of Kratie to the peaceful riverside village of Sambor, with its attractive temple. I booked a small boat with a couple I met staying at the Arun Mekong Guesthouse to take us up early morning to the area near Sambor to watch the very rare freshwater dolphins in Cambodia.
If you travel on the river there is a chance of seeing the rare Mekong dolphin, an endangered species which has become a major attraction. More correctly known as the Irrawaddy dolphin, this is a delightful and sociable mammal.

The "Irrawaddy dolphin" is a euryhaline species of oceanic dolphin found in discontinuous subpopulations near sea coasts and in estuaries and rivers in parts of the Bay of Bengal and Southeast Asia.
One of the earliest recorded descriptions of the Irrawaddy dolphin was by Sir Richard Owen in 1866 based on a specimen found in 1852, in the harbour of Visakhapatnam on the east coast of India. It is one of two species in its genus. It has sometimes been listed variously in a family containing just itself and in Monodontidae and in Delphinapteridae. There is now widespread agreement to list it in the Delphinidae family.
Genetically, the Irrawaddy dolphin is closely related to the killer whale . It is also closely related to the Australian snubfin dolphin, and these two were only recently recognised as distinct species. The species name "brevirostris" comes from the Latin meaning short-beaked. In 2005, genetic analysis showed the Australian snubfin dolphin found at the coast of northern Australia forms a second species in the "Orcaella" genus.
Overall, the dolphins' colour is grey to dark slate blue, paler underneath, with no distinctive pattern. The dorsal fin is small and rounded behind the middle of the back. The forehead is high and rounded; the beak is lacking. The front of its snout is sort of blunt. The flippers are broad and rounded. The species found in Borneo, the finless porpoise, "Neophocaena phocaenoides", is similar and has no back fin; the humpback dolphin, "Sousa chinensis", is larger, has a longer beak and a larger dorsal fin.

WestIslandKev filmed: February 4, 2015 - Kratie, Cambodia.
Just to show you the area where we take the hired boats to view the Mekong dolphins. Up the top of the stairs and a short walk and you will find vendors selling soft drinks, water and snacks as well as the ticket booth for the hired boats. Also there is a nice view of the river.
Amazing Day hiring a boat for an hour and touring around catching wonderful glimpses of the amazing beautiful Irrawaddy Freshwater Dolphins on the Mekong River. I enjoyed the 1.5 hour trip up river from Kratie to the Dolphin viewing area as well as the 1 hour viewing them. It was a fun day and we saw much of life along the river. Around 20 kilometres north of Kratie, at the village of Kampi, the swirling waters of the Mekong are considered one of the best places in the world to see the critically endangered Mekong Irrawaddy dolphin.
Info:
The Mekong dolphin population is now restricted to the upper 190km (190km = 118.06 miles) of the Cambodian Mekong River, from Kratie north to the Laos/Cambodian border. Photo-identification studies have shown that the total population was an estimated 127 individuals in 2005, as may now be as few as 86
Irrawaddy dolphin is not a true river dolphin but an oceanic type that has developed after years to live in the freshwater of Irrawaddy River. Irrawaddy dolphins are a very lovely and helpful animal that are considered a friend and a lucky charm to the local fishers. They are known to help fishermen drive fish into their nets. Classified as critically endangered.
The best spot to watch the dolphins is Kampi village, where there is a good chance to see them hanging around. The dry season offers generally better opportunities to see groups together and spectacular behaviours, and in wet season the boat trip is considerably longer as the animals move several kilometres upstream. Boat trips are available at $7.

Boating around trying to find the Freshwater Irrawaddy Dolphin - Kratie, Cambodia
WestIslandKev filmed: February 4, 2015 - Kratie, Cambodia.
Dolphin watching in Kratie, it takes patience to slowly boat around and spot dolphins. I hope that we are not stressing the dolphins and that this human need to observe them is not bad for their health.

Boat Ride up the Mekong River from Kratie to Sambor to watch Irrawaddy Dolphins
WestIslandKev filmed: February 4, 2015 - Kratie, Cambodia.

10 Weird animals that actually exist:
Wonderful and strange animals that we didn't know that exist. Weird ones such as,Aye-aye,The Maned Wolf,Tufted Deer,Irrawaddy Dolphin,The Gerenuk,The Fossa,Sunda Colugo,Cantor’s Giant Soft Shelled Turtle, giant oarfish, and the Axolotl, never heard of?
Reed the informations about them and enjoy.
The aye-aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis) is a lemur, a strepsirrhine primate native to Madagascar that combines rodent-like teeth and a special thin middle finger to fill the same ecological niche as a woodpecker.
The maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) is the largest canid of South America. Its markings resemble those of foxes, but it is not a fox, nor is it a wolf, as it is not closely related to other canids. It is the only species in the genus Chrysocyon (meaning "golden dog").
The tufted deer (Elaphodus cephalophus) is a small species of deer characterized by a prominent tuft of black hair on its forehead and fang-like canines for the males.
The Irrawaddy dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris) is a euryhaline species of oceanic dolphin found in discontinuous subpopulations near sea coasts and in estuaries and rivers in parts of the Bay of Bengal and Southeast Asia.
The gerenuk, also known as the Waller's gazelle, is a long-necked species of antelope found in dry thorn shrubland and desert in the Horn of Africa and the African Great Lakes region.
The fossa is a cat-like, carnivorous mammal endemic to Madagascar. It is a member of the Eupleridae, a family of carnivorans closely related to the mongoose family (Herpestidae).
The Sunda flying lemur (Galeopterus variegatus), also known as the Malayan flying lemur or Malayan colugo, is a species of colugo. Until recently, it was thought to be one of only two species of flying lemur, the other being the Philippine flying lemur which is found only in the Philippines. The Sunda flying lemur is found throughout Southeast Asia in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore.
The Cantor's giant softshell turtle or Asian giant softshell turtle is a species of freshwater turtle. The turtle has a broad head and small eyes close to the tip of its snout. The carapace is smooth and olive-colored. Juveniles may have dark-spotted carapaces and heads, with yellow around the carapace.
The giant oarfish (Regalecus glesne), also called the king of herrings, is a species of oarfish of the family Regalecidae. It is an oceanodromous species with a worldwide distribution, excluding polar regions.
Axolotl. Also known as a Mexican salamander (Ambystoma mexicanum) or a Mexican walking fish, is a neotenic salamander, closely related to the tiger salamander.Although the axolotl is colloquially known as a "walking fish", it is not a fish, but an amphibian. The species originates from numerous lakes, such as Lake Xochimilco underlying Mexico City.[5] Axolotls are unusual among amphibians in that they reach adulthood without undergoing metamorphosis. Instead of developing lungs and taking to land, the adults remain aquatic and gilled.

A giant flying squirrel, a skydiving gecko, a fish that mates head-to-head, and an eyeless cave-dwelling spider are among 367 new species discovered and catalogued by scientists in the Greater Mekong region in 2012-2013.
This makes the Greater Mekong region one of the world's top five for biodiversity.
"The species discoveries affirm the Greater Mekong as one of the world's richest and most biodiverse regions" Dr Thomas Gray, Manager of WWF-Greater Mekong's Species Programme, said at the launch of the WWF's ''Mysterious Mekong'' report in June.
"If we're to prevent these new species disappearing into extinction, and to keep alive the hope

In this video, our group of friend and family are taking boat tour to the river to see dolphin in the daylight and it's hot but we want to see DOLPHIN so, hot is not a problem. When we get to somewhere we believe there are dolphins, the boat man put off engine and wait and look around, a minute later, there are dolphins get up from the water but it's about 10 meter aways from us. It's a great time but so hot.

Cambodia Untamed Wildlife Reveals - Biodiversity @ its Best....
Explore Cambodia, one of the most bio-diverse countries in Southeast Asia, whose wildlife and climate is ruled by the impact of the annual monsoon cycle.
Cambodia is home to a diverse array of wildlife. There are 212 mammal species, 536 bird species, 176 reptile species (including 89 subspecies), 850 freshwater fish species (Tonlé Sap Lake area), and 435 marine fish species. Many of the country's species are recognized by the IUCN or World Conservation Union as threatened, endangered, or critically endangered due to deforestation and habitat destruction, poaching, the illegal wildlife trade, and farming, fishing, and forestry concessions. Intensive poaching may have already driven Cambodia's national animal, the Kouprey, to extinction, and wild tigers, Eld's deer, wild water buffaloes and hog deer are at critically low numbers.
Wildlife in Cambodia includes dholes, elephants, deer (sambar, Eld's deer, hog deer and muntjac), wild oxen (banteng and gaur), panthers, bears, and tigers. Cormorants, cranes, ibises, parrots, green peafowl, pheasants, and wild ducks are also found, and poisonous snakes are numerous. Deforestation, mining activities, and unregulated hunting, have diminished the country’s wildlife diversity rapidly.
Cambodia also has many endangered species. Cambodia has 16 globally endangered species and two critically endangered species. Some of Cambodia's endangered species are the Asian elephant, Siamese crocodile, wild water buffalo, and the Germain's silver langur.
Much work is being done in this area to help conserve and protect Cambodia's unique wildlife. Wildlife conservation organizations operating in Cambodia include Conservation International, World Wildlife Fund, the Wildlife Conservation Society, Fauna and Flora International, Birdlife International, Wildlife Alliance, and many others.
Cambodia large variety of habitats both on land and in water are home to a significant diversity of threatened wildlife species. Among mammals, wild cattle and deer species as well as predators like tiger and leopard still roam the remote forests of the Eastern Plains Landscape, while a small population of Irrawaddy Dolphin inhabits the Cambodian section of the Mekong River. Birds are equally plentiful - especially Cambodia's populations of large waterbirds in both forests and wetlands stand out as globally significant. The Mekong River is also home to several endangered and iconic fish and reptile species, and critically endangered Siamese crocodile have been observed in the Eastern Plains' Srepok River.

Laos Simply Beautiful (Adventures in Wonderland) - An Unchartered and Unexplored Land
.Laos is home to over one hundred species of large mammal. Many of these are familiar Asian species such as Tiger, Asian Elephant and Gaur (a species of wild cattle). Laos is also home to an impressive diversity of primates including five species of gibbon, five species of macaque and fours species of leaf monkey including the incredibly beautiful Douc Langur.
In recent years Laos has received international attention after the discovery of an incredible variety of species new to science. These recent discoveries include the Saola, a strange and beautiful forest dwelling antelope-like creature, an incredible diversity of small deer species known as muntjacs, a small striped rabbit and a completely new family of rodent known locally as the Kha-nyou and closely related to porcupines.
In addition to mammals, Lao supports over 165 species of amphibians and reptiles, including species such as the Rock and Burmese Pythons, King Cobras and the large and noisy Tokay Gecko (Gekko gecko) a formidable resident of many Lao houses.
Opportunities to view this incredible diversity of wildlife are steadily growing. A long history of market and subsistence hunting have depressed many wildlife populations across the country. The increase in ecotourism and traveler's interest in viewing wildlife now provides positive financial reinforcement for residents to conserve many of these species. Let people know that you want to visit the habitats of Lao wildlife. In particular there are several projects that specifically search for gibbons and elephants.
There are certain countries that, mysteriously, seem to elude the prying eyes of the rest of the world, that evade the noise and pressure of modern life.
After years of war and isolation, Southeast Asia’s most pristine environment, intact cultures and quite possibly the most chilled-out people on earth mean destination Laos is fast earning cult status among travellers. It is developing quickly but still has much of the tradition that has sadly disappeared elsewhere in the region. Village life is refreshingly simple and even in Vientiane it’s hard to believe this sort of languid riverfront life exists in a national capital. Then, of course, there is the historic royal city of Luang Prabang, where watching as hundreds of saffron-robed monks move silently among centuries-old monasteries is as romantic a scene as you’ll experience anywhere in Asia.
Away from the cities, there is so much more to see; the Plain of Jars in Xieng Khuang Province, the forested mountains of Northern Laos, the gothic limestone karsts around the backpacker-haven Vang Vieng and in the deep south, past the market town Pakse, is Si Phan Don (Four Thousand Islands), where the mighty Mekong spreads out and all the hammocks are taken.
The Lao wilderness is drawing travellers looking for nature, adventure or both. Kayaking, rafting, rock-climbing and biking are all available, but it’s the community-based trekking that is most popular because it combines spectacular natural attractions with the chance to experience the ‘real Laos’ with a village homestay – while spending your money where it’s needed most.
There is undoubtedly a growing tourist trail in Laos, but that just means there’s plenty of roads off Rte 13 where you can make your own trail. After all, half the fun of travelling here is in the travel itself – the people you meet, chickens you share seats with, wrong turns you take and lào-láo you drink with the smiling family at the end of the road less travelled.
Laos has become popular with tourists for its relaxed style of living and for retaining elements of the "original Asia" lost elsewhere. The official tourism slogan is "Simply Beautiful". The main attractions for tourists include Buddhist culture and colonial architecture in Luang Prabang; gastronomy and ancient temples in the capital of Vientiane; backpacking in Muang Ngoi Neua and Vang Vieng; ancient and modern culture and history in The Plain of Jars region (main article: Phonsavan); Laos Civil War history in Sam Neua; trekking and visiting hill tribes in a number of areas including Phongsaly and Luang Namtha; spotting tigers and other wildlife in Nam Et-Phou Louey; caves and waterfalls near Thakhek; relaxation, the Irrawaddy dolphin and Khone Phapheng Falls at Si Phan Don or, as they are known in English, the Four Thousand Islands; Wat Phu, an ancient Khmer temple complex; and the Bolaven Plateau for waterfalls and coffee.
Luang Prabang and Wat Phu are both UNESCO World Heritage sites, with the Plain of Jars expected to join them once more work to clear UXO has been completed. Major festivals include Laos New Year which is celebrated around 13–15 April and involves a water festival similar but more subdued than that of Thailand and other South-East Asian countries.

Amazing Fresh Water Dolphin - The Capital of Kratié Province Part I - Kratié is the capital of Kratié Province in eastern Cambodia.
The small town has a population of about 38,215 and lies on the banks of the Mekong River. The city is dominated by a central marketplace surrounded by old, French colonial buildings. Along the river red-flower trees grows in rows along the riverbank. The picturesque town contains big islands with white sand beaches out front that bends in the river. The stretch of river north of the city is home to a group of rare Irrawaddy dolphins. The dolphins are the town's main tourist attraction.
A survey conducted in 2007 by Cambodian Mekong Dolphin Conservation Project (CMDCP), a collaborative project between WWF, World Conservation Society, Fisheries Administration and Cambodian Rural Development Team (CRDT), estimated that there are between 66 and 86 dolphins left in the upper Cambodian Mekong area.

"If we're to prevent these new species disappearing into extinction, and to keep alive the hope of finding other fascinating creatures in years to come, it's critical that governments invest in conservation and green growth strategies."
But are they?
The same Greater Mekong region has lost nearly one-third of its forests in the last 35-40 years - and could be left with only 10-20% by 2030.
The tiger has virtually disappeared from Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. There are some left in Thailand, where the Western Forest Complex bordering Myanmar remains the last hope for tigers on the south east Asian mainland.
New roads and soon new railways as well, across the Greater Mekong region are set to further dismember natural habitat. In Cambodia, conservationists are trying to stop a 36-kilometer road through Mondulkiri Protected Forest.
The demand for Rosewood in China is stripping the forests of the region of the valuable tree. In southern Myanmar, nearly 70,000 acres of forests were cleared or burned in 2010 and 2011 to make space for commercial plantations. In the town of Mong La on the Myanmar (Shan State) - China border, wildlife trade is rampant, operates with impunity and beyond the reach of any enforcement authority - and is emptying out the forests of mainland south east Asia.
Meanwhile dams on the Mekong are set to submerge thousands of acres, interrupt fish migration and kill off the last remaining Irrawaddy Dolphins.
Does the Mekong's fabled biodiversity stand a chance, or is it being discovered just as it is doomed to vanish?
To consider this question the FCCT is hosting a top notch panel on July 29
- Dr Anak Pattanavibool - A former park ranger, Dr Anak did a Masters in Wildlife Science at Oregon State University in 1993 on a USAID scholarship, and a PhD in Environmental Geography at the University of Victoria, BC, Canada. He has worked extensively in Thailand's Western Forest Complex mapping distributions of large mammals and birds. He has lectured at Mahidol University, and in October 2004 took up the position of Country Program Director for the New York-based Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). He also currently lectures at Kasetsart University training next generations of wildlife and national park managers for Thailand and researching wildlife and ecosystem restoration.
- Dr Thomas Gray - Regional Species Manager for WWF Greater Mekong based in Phnom Penh, Dr Gray first came to the region in 2005 to study the Bengal florican, a critically endangered bird found in the human modified grasslands of the Tonle Sap floodplain, and has since been leading research into many of the threatened species of the Mekong region on both land and in the water. Recent work has included using leeches to search for the Saola, the ''Asian unicorn'' and one of the world's most poorly known but most highly threatened mammals, and sampling water along the Mekong for the mysterious and massive Mekong giant catfish.
- Brian Gonzales & Marc Su - Experts on regional wildlife trafficking and enforcement, Brian Gonzales and Marc Su are with the Freeland Foundation, and work closely with the Asean Wildlife Enforcement Network (ASEAN-WEN) and its enforcement arm, the Law Enforcement Extension Office (LEEO).

ʬ Travel Planet: Laos Simply Beautiful (Adventures in Wonderland) - An Unchartered and Unexplored La
ʬ .Laos is home to over one hundred species of large mammal.

Boat tour to see DOLPHIN at Kampi resort in Kratie province, Cambodia
At Kampi resort in Kratie province is a place where all the tourist can enjoy watching the fresh water dolphin in the river. We can sit and watch from the top but we can take a boat to the river to get closer to DOLPHIN in the river.

Jackie Chan, in support of effort to save the endangered Irrawaddy Dolphin in Myanmar from lawless electro-fishing, made a short film to plead for the stopping of such illegal activities. The iconic action star is very popular in the country and thus his calling can be very effective. The film launched in Myanmar beginning April 1, 2015 through social media and is organized by the Hong Kong based China Exploration & Research Society (CERS) in conjunction with First Myanmar Investment (FMI).

April is the hottest time in Cambodia. Even in the afternoon temperatures descend I did not know. But I had to take the boat again. Meet the Mekong River Irrawaddy dolphin owner called wihaeseoda. There already are numerous river boats are competing with each other to grab a good seat. Tourists waiting while forgetting anything except the neck sunburned, dolphins finally appeared. But soon he went into the water like a dolphin nicknamed one seconds. Is watching too much killing. Dolphins did not come readily to my side. At that moment I saw the eyes of the Irrawaddy dolphin. Referred to as a very brief moment, but Irrawaddy dolphins are an endangered species remaining, barely out of 100 horses is now smiling dolphins in the Mekong River bulrineunde called because facial expressions. "After the fall of Pol Pot's regime it did not protect the dolphins in anarchy. By bored soldiers were also shooting a gun, and it's also a lot of dead, throwing bombs. "If you can be a long time to see the beautiful Mekong River Irrawaddy dolphin smile of hope, like a sunset.

Amazing Fresh Water Dolphin - The Capital of Kratié Province Part II - Kratié is the capital of Kratié Province in eastern Cambodia.

The Mekong River is also home to several endangered and iconic fish and reptile species, and critically endangered Siamese crocodile have been observed in the Eastern Plains' Srepok River.

.Laos is home to over one hundred species of large mammal.

We might heard about the fresh water Cambodian dolphin at Kratie province, right? It's now i'm sharing it the video from my trip to Kratie province and it's from the boat at Kampi resort, the river where we can see dolphin swimming and jumping up out of the water a little bit and we can see them clearly from the boats. It's hot that day as we take a boat to see dolphin at around 2pm. but it's fine as we achieved what we want to see.

At Kampi resort in Kratie province is a place where all the tourist can enjoy watching the fresh water dolphin in the river. We can sit and watch from the top but we can take a boat to the river to get closer to DOLPHIN in the river.
