Other countries near the Comoros are Tanzania to the northwest and the Seychelles to the northeast. Its capital is Moroni, on Grande Comore. At 1,862 km2 (719 sq mi), excluding the contested island of Mayotte, the Comoros is the third-smallest African nation by area. The population, excluding Mayotte, is estimated at 798,000. The name "Comoros" derives from the Arabic word قمر qamar ("moon").As a nation formed at a crossroads of many civilizations, the archipelago is noted for its diverse culture and history. The Union of the Comoros has three official languages -- Comorian, Arabic and French -- though French is the sole official language on Mayotte. Officially, in addition to many smaller islands, the country consists of the four major islands in the volcanic Comoros archipelago: northwesternmost Grande Comore (Ngazidja); Mohéli (Mwali); Anjouan (Nzwani); and southeasternmost Mayotte (Maore). Mayotte, however, has never been administered by the Comoros government and continues to be administered by France (currently as an overseas department) as it was the only island in the archipelago that voted against independence in 1974. France has since vetoed United Nations Security Council resolutions that would affirm Comorian sovereignty over the island. In addition, a referendum on the question of Mayotte becoming an overseas department of France in 2011 was held on 29 March 2009 and passed overwhelmingly. The Comoros is the only state to be a member of the African Union, Francophonie, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Arab League (of which it is the southernmost state, being the only member of the Arab League which is entirely within the Southern Hemisphere) and the Indian Ocean Commission. Since independence in 1975, the country has experienced numerous coups d'état and, as of 2008, about half the population lives below the international poverty line of US$1.25 a day. - music played by Myrrh Klimper´s - Composer & Player music- published: 13 Jul 2014

The Comoros, officially the Union of the Comoros (Comorian: Udzima wa Komori, French: Union des Comores, Arabic: الاتحاد القمري al-Ittiḥād al-Qumurī / Qamarī) is a sovereign archipelago island nation in the Indian Ocean, located at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel off the eastern coast of Africa, between northeastern Mozambique and northwestern Madagascar. Each Island have a different financial law and Anjouan and Mwali have International Services Authority. Anjouan is an autonomous island in the Indian Ocean that has formed part of the Comoros since it reached its independence in 1975, when, together with Moheli, it requested secession. It proclaimed itself the independent State of Anjouan in August of 1997, with Foundi Abdallah as president. Then, the island requested integration with the French Republic, but France refused the request. Later, Anjouan adopted a constitution through a referendum held on February 25, 1998. The end of the 20th Century was convulsive for Anjouan, because several coup d'état took place. After the creation of the Union of the Comoros, the islands accepted integration into this new formation in 2002; however, internal problems continued between forces loyal to Mohamed Bacar and the opposition. Anjouan was invaded by the Union military in 2008, followed by its new declaration of independence, with Bacar seeking political asylum. The changes were positive and the island was finally successful in establishing itself politically and economically. Anjouan uses the Comorian Franc, minted by the Bank of France and issued by the island's Central Bank, as its currency. The island's economy depends on agriculture and related industries. These employ more than 80% of the work force. Anjouan is the world's main exporter of ylang-ylang oil, an ingredient used in almost all perfumes. Anjouan has offered licenses to more than 300 offshore banks. The Offshore Financial Authority of Anjouan, whose objective is to attract foreign capital by offering ample fiscal advantages, has existed since 2002. In 2005, by signing new laws, the Limited Services Corporation of Anjouan obtained the right and authority as a registered agent for all international business companies and the issue of bank licenses. This Corporation received some inquiries, but the Supreme Court of Justice of London confirmed its legal rights to operate offshore businesses, with the complete consensus of the Anjouan Government.- published: 26 Mar 2014

Since independence in 1975, the country has experienced numerous coups d'état and, as of 2008, about half the population lives below the international poverty line of US$1.25 a day. The first human inhabitants of the Comoros Islands are thought to have been African and Austronesian settlers who traveled to the islands by boat. These people arrived no later than the sixth century AD, the date of the earliest known archaeological site, found on Nzwani, although settlement beginning as early as the first century has been postulated. The islands of Comoros became populated by a succession of diverse groups from the coast of Africa, the Persian Gulf, the Malay Archipelago, and Madagascar. Swahili settlers first reached the islands as a part of the greater Bantu expansion that took place in Africa throughout the first millennium. According to pre-Islamic mythology, a jinni (spirit) dropped a jewel, which formed a great circular inferno. This became the Kartala volcano, which in turn created the island of Comoros. Yemenia Airways Charged By France Over Deadly Crash In 2009
France has charged Yemenia Airways with manslaughter over a 2009 crash off the Comoros Islands that killed 152 people, judicial sources say. The French authorities say the Airbus A310, which set off from the Yemeni capital, should not have been allowed to fly, the AFP news agency reports. Most of the 152 people killed in the crash were French citizens visiting relatives in the Comoros. There was just one survivor - a teenage girl who was rescued from the sea. Many of the passengers were travelling to the Comoros, but had begun their journey in Paris or Marseille on another jet operated by the national airline of Yemen, before boarding flight IY626 in Sanaa. 'Great relief' An association of the victims' families, AFVCA, has welcomed the charge. "It's a great relief for the families of the victims who have waited four and a half years," a spokesman for the association told the BBC. "Now the company will finally be forced to face up to its responsibilities." Yemenia has previously said that bad weather - strong winds and high seas - was the more likely cause of the crash. The carrier is not included on the current European Union list of banned airlines. The crash caused anger amongst the Comorian community in France as people complained that the aircraft had been in poor condition. The plane was banned from French airspace after inspectors found numerous faults in 2007, according to the then transport minister, Dominique Bussereau. Several European countries had also found a number of problems when they inspected Yemenia aircraft prior to the crash. Officials from Yemen have previously said the plane had undergone a thorough inspection and conformed to international standards.- published: 29 Jan 2014
