After a walkabout in central Lisbon, the opposition Social Democrat Party (PSD) candidate Pedro Passos Coelho addressed supporters saying his party would "pay every euro" of the EU-IMF 78 (b) billion euro bailout package. According to opinion polls, Passos Coelho's party looks set this Sunday to oust the governing Socialists, who would become the latest political victims of Europe's financial troubles. Socialist Party candidate and outgoing Prime Minister Jose Socrates told a rally of supporters on Friday that the PSD leader was to blame for the current financial crisis. He said Passos Coelho "has a historical responsibility for this and this will weigh on his shoulders". Both Portugal's main parties have asked voters to give them strong majorities in Parliament where approval is needed to enact urgent and far-reaching social and fiscal reforms, including more austerity measures, to restore national fiscal health and spur growth. Any sign of backtracking on commitments to cut Portugal's burdensome debt levels would trigger a fresh bout of market fears about the eurozone's ability to improve its economic prospects. According to a poll by Intercampus. the centre-right Social Democrats will collect 36.5 percent of the vote in Sunday's elections compared with 31 percent for the centre-left Socialists. The poll of 1,026 voters had a margin of error of 3.06 percent. A Eurosondagem survey for Expresso gave the Social Democrats 36 percent and the Socialists 31 percent. Based on 507 interviews, its margin of error was 2.17 percent. That outcome would leave the Social Democratic Party shy of an overall parliamentary majority, meaning opposition parties could together foil its plans.
