People and Power - The Baltic and the Bear
For months, NATO has been building up its military presence in the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania amid fears that, after the Russian sponsored separatist conflict in Eastern Ukraine, their turn may be next.
But have these nations, part of the Soviet Union until the early 1990s, been adding to the tension by discriminating against their large ethnic-Russian minorities?

The largest NATO exercise in 13 years will take place this October.
Exercise Trident Juncture will involve 36,000 personnel from more than 30 allied and partner nations and will be the culmination of a year of NATO exercises.
Right now the Royal Air Force, already busy with operations over Iraq and deployments around the world, is supporting NATO in the Baltic Air Policing Mission.
Although it's been ongoing since 2004, recent years have seen the UK's involvement increase in the wake of the Ukraine crisis.
However, it's not just the pilots and the aircraft that are based in the Baltic, it involves a range of personnel with different trades and skills.
Forces TV's Laura Hawkins was given an exclusive look at what is involved.

The Baltic Way or Baltic Chain ( Estonian: Balti kett, Latvian: Baltijas ceļš, Lithuanian: Baltijos kelias, Russian: Балтийский путь) was a peaceful political demonstration that occurred on August 23, 1989. Approximately two million people joined their hands to form a human chain spanning over 600 kilometres (370 mi) across the three Baltic states -- Estonian SSR, Latvian SSR, and Lithuanian SSR, republics of the Soviet Union. It marked the 50th anniversary of the Molotov--Ribbentrop Pact between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. The pact and its secret protocols divided Eastern Europe into spheres of influence and led to the occupation of the Baltic states in 1940. The event was organised by Baltic pro-independence movements: Rahvarinne of Estonia, the Popular Front of Latvia, and Sąjūdis of Lithuania. The protest was designed to draw global attention by demonstrating a popular desire for independence for each of the entities. It also illustrated solidarity among the three nations. It has been described as an effective publicity campaign, and an emotionally captivating and visually stunning scene. The event presented an opportunity for the Baltic activists to publicize the illegal Soviet occupation and position the question of Baltic independence not as a political matter, but as a moral issue.

When the Baltic States became part of the EU, the leaders of Latvia and Lithuania hoped their countries would turn into economic paradise with a high standard of living. However, soon their dreams about the bright future turned into a nightmare, Nrg Maariv said.
"Over the last decade, thousands of people left these countries, especially the young generation. They took advantage of their European passports and migrated to more developed European countries, such as Britain and Germany. Thus, Latvia and Lithuania are left with nothing: with the economy on the brink of collapse and an aging population," the newspaper reported.
In 1991, before the fall of the Soviet Union, Latvia had 2.7 million people. Today, there are only 1.97 million. The situation will only continue to get worse — by 2060 there will be 1.4 million people in Latvia.
"Young people are moving to more developed countries, while we remain with an aging population. The mortality rate is above the birth rate. We can say that we're dying out," demographer Parsella Aglita said, according to Nrg Maariv.
The situation is similar in Lithuania. Out of 3.7 million people in 1991, there are now 2.9 million. The country is expected to lose another 40 percent of its population by 2060, according to EU forecasts.
Until both Baltic nations start to develop their own economies and introduce innovations they will be considered as the backwater of Europe and young folks will continue to run away to more developed countries in the West, the newspaper said, citing words of a Latvian politician.

STORYLINE
The Baltic state of Estonia early on Saturday became the 17th European Union member to adopt the joint European currency, the euro.
The small nation's decision to change from the Estonian kroon to the euro was the final step in a two decade-long effort to integrate its economy with Europe after it achieved independence in 1991.
Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip was the first person in the country of 1.3 (m) million to withdraw euro notes from a cash machine specially installed for the midnight changeover at the opera house in central Tallinn.
Ansip's example was followed by EU transport commissioner Siim Kallas, Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius and Latvian Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis.
The four men waved their fresh euro notes at a crowd of some five thousand cheering people as New Year fireworks burst in the cold night marking the advent of 2011 and a new era for Estonia.
The Finance Ministry said banks and information systems were prepared to cope with the changeover as hundreds of cash machines were being loaded with euro notes.
Selected bank branches and post offices were to stay open over the weekend to accommodate the switch, but police urged citizens not to rush about with large amounts of cash due to robbery risks.
Estonia is the first former Soviet republic to join the single currency club.
After Slovenia and Slovakia, it is the third east European country using the euro.
Seven other countries in the region - Poland, Romania, Hungary, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Lithuania and Latvia - also are required to phase in the euro as part of European Union membership, though there is no deadline to do so.
Latvia and Lithuania, Estonia's Baltic neighbours, are enthusiastic supporters of the euro and could become the club's newest members in 2014.
The inclusion of Estonia, a minuscule 19 (B) billion US dollars economy, in the 12.5 (tr) trillion US dollars eurozone is being touted for its symbolic importance after the currency was battered throughout 2010 by bad news.
Two members - Greece and Ireland - required international bailout funds to avoid bankruptcy.
But Estonia's leaders and many economists believe the country's economy, which contracted a staggering 14 percent in 2009, will benefit with the euro, though the country still has painful structural reforms to implement before reaching western European living standards.
The small nation will be the poorest member of the euro zone, a cause for concern for many Estonians who fear they will have to cough up scarce resources to help other member countries that failed to maintain fiscal discipline.

A pyrotechnic competition in Latvia attracted huge crowds.
People ate traditional food, listened to music and danced the night away, as well as watching teams from the Baltic region battle it out to become the 'Fire Fern' fireworks display champion.
STORYLINE:
Thousands of people gathered near the ancient Latvian city of Valmiera to watch the International Fireworks Festival go off in a shower of sparks.
Fireworks teams from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Poland participated in the "Fire Fern 2006", the International Baltic Firework Festival.
The festival is hugely popular in the Baltic countries and every year attracts people from all over the region.
The festival wasn't just about fireworks, there were also food stalls, musical performances and even a disco.
One man attending the festival, Yanis, said he hadn't seen anything like the festival before.
The crackers were launched from boats moored on the river Gauja.
One member of the Latvian fireworks team, Arnas Sostakas, said each team began the competition on an equal footing.
The fireworks teams used the latest equipment and brand-new techniques to create pictures and patterns in the Latvian night sky.
The teams synchronised their fire shows to music of various genres, from hard-rock to classics.
The jury, consisting of representatives from local authorities and festival sponsors, evaluated each team's performance.
And even the spectators could vote for the team they liked the most.
In the end it was a hometown victory for the Latvian team.

STORYLINE:
This weekend the Baltic countries are marking two important events in their history - the 70th anniversary of the Molotov Ribbentrop Pact, which led to their occupation by the Soviet Union, and the 20th anniversary of the Baltic Chain, which led to their eventual independence in 1991.
On August 23, 1939, German and Soviet Foreign Ministers Joachim von Ribbentrop and Vyacheslav Molotov signed a pact of non-aggression between their two countries.
But the pact also contained the so-called "secret protocols" under which Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union divided Central and Eastern Europe.
Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia were given to Stalin and in June 1940 all three countries were annexed by the Soviet Union. Apart from a 3 year occupation by the Nazis, the Baltic states remained part of the Soviet Union for the next 50 years.
In July this year, delegates at the OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe) annual parliamentary meeting in Vilnius voted to condemn both Stalinism and Fascism for starting World War 2.
The resolution was proposed by Lithuanian conservative MP Vilija Aleknaite-Abramikiene.
For her, Stalin and Hitler bear equal responsibility for starting the war, but Stalin caused more suffering to the people of the Baltic states.
"Stalin had no right to occupy independent states, he had no right to apply the laws of occupying country to the citizens of other country, he had no right for torturing or turning our people into slaves in Siberia", she said speaking on Thursday, ahead of the anniversary.
Albinas Kentras was just a boy when the Soviet Union invaded Lithuania. After the war he became a "forest brother", the name given to those who fought against the Soviet occupation. He was arrested and spent two years in KGB prisons.
On August 23, 1989, on the 50th anniversary of the Pact, millions of people joined hands across all three Baltic countries calling for an end to Soviet occupation. It was called the Baltic Chain.
Kentras filmed the event, the first steps made by the Baltic states towards independence from Moscow.
"Information was very essential at that time and Lithuania needed support from other countries and we got it", he said.
Kentras will be taking part in this weekend's celebrations of the 20th anniversary of the Chain. But it will also be a day for remembering those people who suffered as a result of the Soviet occupation.
"Then we can bury them. They are our heroes."

The evening's celebrations got under way in Lithuania on Sunday to mark the 20th anniversary of the Baltic Way human chain protest, when Baltic states joined hands to protest at their occupation by Soviet Russia.
In the countryside 16 kilometres (10 miles) outside the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius there was a huge bonfire and traditional dancing.
Lithuanian president, who attended the festivities said the event celebrated the people's history and their fight for independence.
All three nations - Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia - held special events to mark the 20th anniversary of one of the key events in their struggle against Soviet occupation.
On 23 August, 1989, millions of people joined hands across the three Baltic countries to call for an end to Soviet occupation, forming a nearly unbroken 400 miles (644 kilometres) long human chain, known as the Baltic Way.
The event was staged on the 50th anniversary of the 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, which carved up Eastern Europe between Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia.
The 1939 non-aggression pact signed between German and Soviet Foreign Ministers Joachim von Ribbentrop and Vyacheslav Molotov contained the so-called "secret protocols" under which Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union divided Central and Eastern Europe.
Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia were given to Stalin and in June 1940 all three countries were annexed by the Soviet Union.
Apart from a three-year occupation by the Nazis, the Baltic states remained part of the Soviet Union for the next 50 years.

Motorcyclists from the Baltic states on Saturday finished a commemorative ride ahead of the twentieth anniversary of the Baltic Way, a human chain formed in 1989 to highlight the Soviet occupation of the Baltic States.
Bikers from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania rode from their respective homes to the town of Sigulda in Latvia.
The town was chosen because it was considered to be almost equidistant between Tallinn and Vilnius.
The bike ride is one of many events in the Baltic countries marking two important events in their history this weekend - the 70th anniversary of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, which led to their occupation by the Soviet Union, and the 20th anniversary of the Baltic Chain.
Jannis Dukaiskis, vice president of the Association of Latvian Motorcycle Clubs said the anniversary was a time to, "both remember and to celebrate."

STORYLINE:
US President George W. Bush in Latvia on Saturday saluted three former Soviet republics' fledgling democracies, saying America will never forget the communist oppression they endured for half a century.
Bush said, "We recognise your painful history," after meeting the leaders of Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia.
His visit to Riga, on his way to Moscow where he will mark the 60th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany, has rankled Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Bush called for free elections, set for next year, in the former Soviet republic of Belarus, one of the last remaining authoritarian leaderships in Europe.
The people of Belarus "should be allowed to express themselves in free and open and fair elections," Bush said about the former Soviet republic run by President Alexander Lukashenko.
In a reference to Putin's steps away from democratic reforms and Belarus, Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus said he reassured Bush that the Baltics will support peoples' quest for the same freedoms they now enjoy.
He said the Baltic leaders hoped they could introduce to other nations "some kind of dose of oxygen into the resistance and opposition that is striving for the same rights we are enjoying."
Bush's stop here prompted a letter of protest from Moscow, which was upset that the president was visiting both Latvia and Georgia during his European trip.
Asked about criticism that the United States is meddling in Russia's backyard, Bush said freedom is a universal right.
Every step of Bush's brief stay here was aimed at celebrating the democracy that was ushered into Latvia and other parts of Europe with the end of the Cold War.
But his visit also underscored still-simmering anger at the Soviet Union's 1940 annexation of the Baltics that resulted in an oppressive occupation that lasted 50 years.

STORYLINE
A spell of Arctic cold has gripped Russia and the Baltics this week.
Many residents in Kaunas, Lithuania's second largest city, are not used to such cold, or temperatures ever dropping below twenty degrees centigrade.
Several hundred wild swans and geese have found shelter from bitter frosts in a pond near a thermal power plant outside Kaunas.
The birds did not migrate to Turkey this year.
Local residents are helping them live through the winter.
Despite the cold spell, Lithuania's top belly dancers gathered for a performance in the Kaunas' Pompeja club, saying they're ready to perform whatever the weather.

Felice Vinci is a nuclear engineer, amateur historian and author of The Baltic Origins of Homer's Epic Tales, The Illiad, The Odyssey and The Migration of Myth. William Mullen received his BA in Classics from Harvard College and his PhD from the University of Texas. He was a Professor or post-doctoral Fellow at Berkeley, Princeton, Boston University, and Harvard's Center for Hellenic Studies and St. John's College. Dr. Mullen settled in the Classics Department at Bard College in 1985. Felice shares compelling evidence that the events of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey took place in the Baltic and not the Mediterranean. For years scholars have debated the incongruities in Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, given that his descriptions are at odds with the geography of the areas he purportedly describes. Felice and Bill discuss how a climate change forced the migration of a people and their myth to ancient Greece. Felice identifies the true geographic sites of Troy and Ithaca in the Baltic Sea and Calypso's Isle in the North Atlantic Ocean. We'll hear where the story suggests that the events took place in the Baltic, such as Ulysses' journey along what sounds like the coasts of Norway. Also, we talk about why some tribes in Northern Europe might have stayed during the climate change. Later, we compare Homeric poems with Viking mythology to find similarities and compare Greco-Roman Gods and Goddesses to Norse Gods and Goddesses. Felice Vinci offers a key to open many doors that allow us to consider the age-old question of the Indo-European diaspora and the origin of the Greek civilization from a new perspective.

This is the second time we have done this trip which indicates how much we enjoy our 14 nights cruising the Baltic. The tour visits eight countries and I really can't think of any better way to do that in luxury than on a cruise.
I suggest you watch it on a big screen because the sunsets are magnificent. My favourites are the Russian MIG 29 fighters in St Petersburg, Tallin in Estonia, which is really delightful and that ship sailing in front of the sunset video.
Sorry Mr Putin but your Russia is a disaster, you really are a poor leader for your people and it comes across in the video.
