This meter gauge 850V DC third rail train climbs from Villefranche de Conflent 1165 meters on gradients up to 6%. It crosses several viaducts and passes through numerous tunnels while climbing up several steep gorges. From the summit It descends to an Alpine plateau and its terminus at La Tour de Carol close to the Spanish border. Here three different gauged railways meet (meter gauge, French standard gauge and Spanish Iberian gauge [1668mm]).

This third rail 850V DC line with a maximum grade of 6% was built from Villefranche de Conflent to Mont Louis between 1903 & 1910. An extension to Latour de Carol was completed in 1927. The train climbs about 4000 feet in altitude along the Tet River valley on a narrow ledge often supported by large rock walls. Many tributaries to the Tet are crossed by stone viaducts and there are numerous tunnels. There are two very large bridges over the Tet - one a suspension bridge and the other a stone viaduct. From Font-Romeu the line drops over 1000 feet through a number of hairpin bends to an alpine plateau and then runs close to the Spanish border.
