wn.com/Sam Smith Takes Portraits After Big Grammy Win
Sam Smith made a big splash at Sunday's Grammy Awards, winning four of his six nominations.
After being named best new artist, the British singer won pop vocal album (In the Lonely Hour) and song of the year (a songwriter's award) and record of the year for "Stay with Me."
Smith lost album of the year to Beck, who also won rock album for Morning Phase, and pop solo performance to Pharrell Williams for "Happy."
Williams and Beyonce, both of whom had six nods as well, each won three awards. Williams also won best music video for "Happy" and urban contemporary album for Girl during the pre-show, while Beyonce snagged R&B; song and R&B; performance for "Drunk in Love," and surround sound album for her eponymous EP. She has now won 20 Grammys, surpassing Aretha Franklin for second most won by a female artist. (Alison Krauss leads with 27.)
Kendrick Lamar and Eminem split the rap categories, with the former winning rap performance and rap song for "i" and the latter taking rap/sung collaboration with Rihanna for "Monster" and rap album for The Marshall Mathers LP 2. Eminem has now won an unprecedented six best rap album Grammys.
Other winners include Miranda Lambert (country album for Platinum), Carrie Underwood (country solo performance for "Something in the Water"), A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera (pop/duo group performance for "Say Something") and Joan Rivers, who won a posthumous spoken word album Grammy for Diary of a Mad Diva.

Sam Smith was the early big winner at the 57th Grammy Awards. Within an hour of the ceremony's start, the English star had already won two Grammys: one for Best Pop Vocal Album (for 2014's In The Lonely Hour) and one for Best New Artist. Taylor Swift presented the latter award, cheekily reminding the audience that she lost that award in 2008. (Read about why some artists might not want to be the recipient of Best New Artist.)
Try Newsweek for only $1.25 per week
Other big winners include Beyoncé, who thanked her "bey-hive" after taking home the Best R&B; Performance Grammy for "Drunk in Love," and indie chameleon Beck, who won Best Rock Album for the decidedly un-rocking Morning Phase. (Beck beat out U2's controversial iPhone giveaway album Songs of Innocence in this category.)
Meanwhile, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga won Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for Cheek to Cheek; Miranda Lambert won Best Country Album for Platinum; and Pharrell Williams won Best Pop Solo Performance for 2013 mega-hit "Happy," which the artist performed in a choir arrangement.

Some of country music’s hottest young artists are among the nominees at the upcoming 2015 Grammy Awards, but Taste of Country predicts it’ll be a night for country veterans to shine.
Miranda Lambert is up for Best Country Album, Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance, but we don’t think this is her year at the Grammys, despite a strong showing at the CMA Awards. There were just too many wildcards this year, and despite some very fine efforts all around, we think she’ll be going home empty-handed that night, along with names like Dierks Bentley, Hunter Hayes and even Keith Urban.
Find out if our predictions are true when the 57th annual Grammy Awards air live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday, Feb. 8 at 7PM ET on CBS.

Australian musicians lead charge at Grammy Awards - Iggy Azalea
Hip-hop artist Iggy Azalea, from New South Wales, is nominated for four Grammy Awards
Today, Australian music is popular with American recording companies and US college students alike, and Australian musicians are set to win a bunch of Grammys this month. But it wasn't always so.
In 1983, when Australian band Men at Work won Best New Artist at the Grammys, one thing stuck out for lead vocalist Colin Hay: a compliment from rock and roll legend Little Richard.
"He told me he liked my coat," says the Scottish-Australian former front man, adding: "It was very exciting - all of a sudden we were in this [famous] company."
In the 1970s and 1980s, Australian musicians - with a few notable exceptions such as Olivia Newton John and AC/DC - were invisible on the global music scene.
"There was a sense that it was too hard to get famous outside of Australia," says Iain Shedden, music writer at The Australian newspaper. "The music for some reason didn't travel that well."
Three decades later Australians are not only topping the charts worldwide, they are leading the charge at the Grammys, America's largest and most important annual music awards.
Gotye won a hat-trick of awards at the 2013 Grammys
The 57th Annual Grammy Awards, held on 8 February in Los Angeles, sees four Australian artists nominated. To boot, iconic Aussie rockers AC/DC will perform on the night.
Competing for coveted Record of the Year is hip-hop artist Iggy Azalea, a native of Mullumbimby in New South Wales, and the Adelaide-born singer-songwriter sensation Sia Furler. Both are nominated for four Grammys each.
Meanwhile, composer Fiona Joy's song Grace is up for Best New Age Release, and Grammy-award-winning Keith Urban is nominated for Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Duo/Group Performance.
"It's a strong reflection that Australian music is doing incredibly well around the world," says Dan Rosen, chief executive officer of the Australian Recording Industry Association (Aria).
Last year's Grammys attracted 28.51 million viewers on CBS; countless more tuned in on social media (15.2 million Tweets were sent about the awards according to Twitter). The moneymaking event is as much about glitz, glamour and show biz as it is a celebration of music.
But big audiences mean big profit. And performing at the awards - particularly in the wake of YouTube - can arguably lead to greater exposure than winning. In the digital age of downloads and online streaming, the Grammys has a near instantaneous effect on sales and charts.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is the debut solo album by American recording artist Lauryn Hill, released on August 25, 1998, by Ruffhouse Records and Columbia Records. After touring with former group the Fugees, Hill met Rohan Marley, and became pregnant with his child. The pregnancy, along with several other circumstances, would inspire her to make a solo record which would eventually become The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Recording sessions for the album took place from late 1997 to June 1998, and were held primarily at Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston, Jamaica.
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is a neo soul album that incorporates styles such as R&B;, hip hop, soul, and reggae. Its lyrics touch upon Hill's pregnancy at the time and the turmoil in her former group the Fugees, along with themes of love and God. The album's title was inspired by the film and autobiographical novel The Education of Sonny Carson, and Carter G. Woodson's The Mis-Education of the Negro.
Upon its release, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill received rave reviews from music critics who frequently complimented it for Hill's honest presentation of a female's view on life and love. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 422,624 copies in its first week and eventually being certified eight-times-platinum in the U.S. The album's success propelled Hill to superstardom and helped bring hip hop and neo soul to the forefront of popular music. The Miseducation has been ranked in numerous best-album lists by critics. At the 41st Grammy Awards, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill earned her five Grammy Awards, including the award for Album of the Year.
The album produced three hit singles—"Doo Wop (That Thing)", "Ex-Factor", and "Everything Is Everything". The album's lead single "Doo Wop (That Thing)" peaked at number one in the US, with the latter two singles peaking with in the top forty of the country. The album was later promoted with an international supporting tour by Hill in 1999.

The three brothers emerged as a group in Nashville in the 1990s. After moving back to their home state of Texas they recorded an album in 2003 in Austin at Willie Nelson's Pedernales recording studio.[2] The album was initially released by Or Music and later acquired by Epic Records for distribution in March 2004.
The group's first single, "Heaven", reached No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart, and No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, also crossing over even to the Hot Country Songs chart, where it peaked at No. 46. "Heaven" was featured in Guitar Hero: On Tour. In 2005 the song won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Other songs nominated for Grammys include "More Than Love" and "Onda," both in 2006.
In 2005, the group recorded "I Don't Wanna Lose Your Love" with Carlos Santana for the Santana album All That I Am. Their 2006 album, Sacred, features the song "Outlaws". In a "closing of the circle," Enrique Garza Sr. sings the verse about the "missing outlaws, just like me." Willie Nelson, who is credited on the 2004 album, also provides a verse which makes reference to his hit "On the Road Again".
In 2007, Los Lonely Boys participated in Amnesty International's "Make Some Noise" project. Their cover of John Lennon's "Whatever Gets You thru the Night" is the second single from the "Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur." The song was released on iTunes on April 17, with the entire album available on June 12 courtesy of Warner Bros. Records. "Whatever Gets You thru the Night" is noteworthy as John Lennon's only US number one solo single while he was alive.
Their third studio album, Forgiven, was released on July 1, 2008. The album was recorded at East Side Stages in Austin and was produced by Steve Jordan. On October 23, 2008, Los Lonely Boys sang the national anthem to open game two of the 2008 World Series in St. Petersburg, Florida.[3]
In March 2009, Los Lonely Boys left Sony/Epic and signed on with Austin-based Playing In Traffic Records. In March 2010, the group was awarded "Best Rock Band" in the Austin Music Awards.
The trio released a tribute EP titled 1969 on October 13, 2009, paying homage to the 40th anniversary of the titular year with covers of Santana's "Evil Ways", The Doors' "Roadhouse Blues", Blind Faith's "Well All Right", The Beatles' "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window", and Tony Joe White's "Polk Salad Annie." The EP was produced by Andy Johns and marked the first release on their new label.
Los Lonely Boys' yet-to-be-titled fourth studio album was originally slated to drop in fall 2010. However, due to bassist Jojo Garza's vocal cord injury, the album has been pushed back. The band also had to cancel a handful of tour dates in late April and early May, but has since resumed

Elvis is a 2005 biographical CBS mini-series written by Patrick Sheane Duncan and directed by James Steven Sadwith. It chronicles the rise of American music icon Elvis Presley from his high school years to his international superstardom.
The cast includes Irish actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Elvis, Rose McGowan as Ann-Margret, Randy Quaid as "Colonel" Tom Parker, Camryn Manheim as Gladys Presley, Robert Patrick as Vernon Presley, Tim Guinee as Sam Phillips, Jack Noseworthy as Steve Binder, Antonia Bernath as Priscilla Presley, Stuart Greer as Captain Beaulieu, Clay Steakley as Bill Black, Mark Adam as Scotty Moore, John Boyd West as Red West and Randy McDowell as Gene Smith.
Meyers won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film for his performance as Elvis Presley.
Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977) was an American singer and actor. Regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century, he is often referred to as "the King of Rock and Roll", or simply, "the King".
Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, Presley and his family moved to Memphis, Tennessee, when he was 13 years old. His music career began there in 1954, when he started to work with Sam Phillips, the owner of Sun Records. Accompanied by guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, Presley was an early popularizer of rockabilly, an uptempo, backbeat-driven fusion of country music and rhythm and blues. RCA Victor acquired his contract in a deal arranged by Colonel Tom Parker, who was to manage the singer for more than two decades. Presley's first RCA single, "Heartbreak Hotel", released in January 1956, was a number-one hit in the US. He became the leading figure of rock and roll after a series of network television appearances and chart-topping records. His energized interpretations of songs and sexually provocative performance style, combined with a singularly potent mix of influences across color lines that coincided with the dawn of the Civil Rights Movement, made him enormously popular—and controversial.
In November 1956, he made his film debut in Love Me Tender. In 1958, he was drafted into military service: He resumed his recording career two years later, producing some of his most commercially successful work before devoting much of the 1960s to making Hollywood movies and their accompanying soundtrack albums, most of which were critically derided. In 1968, following a seven-year break from live performances, he returned to the stage in the acclaimed televised comeback special Elvis, which led to an extended Las Vegas concert residency and a string of highly profitable tours. In 1973, Presley was featured in the first globally broadcast concert via satellite, Aloha from Hawaii. Several years of prescription drug abuse severely damaged his health, and he died in 1977 at the age of 42.
Presley is one of the most celebrated and influential musicians of the 20th century. Commercially successful in many genres, including pop, blues and gospel, he is the best-selling solo artist in the history of recorded music, with estimated album sales of around 600 million units worldwide. He was nominated for 14 competitive Grammys and won three, also receiving the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at age 36, and has been inducted into multiple music halls of fame.

Mariah Carey (born March 27, 1969 or 1970) is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, and occasional actress. She rose to prominence after releasing her self-titled debut studio album Mariah Carey in 1990; it went multiplatinum and spawned four consecutive number one singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. Under the guidance of Columbia Records executive and later husband Tommy Mottola, Carey continued booking success with followup albums Emotions (1991), Music Box (1993), and Merry Christmas (1994), and was established as Columbia's highest-selling act. Daydream (1995) made music history when its second single "One Sweet Day", a duet with Boyz II Men, spent a record sixteen weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100, and remains the longest-running number-one song in U.S. chart history. During the recording of the album, Carey began to deviate from her R&B; and pop beginnings and slowly traversed into hip hop. This musical change became evident with the release of Butterfly (1997), at which time Carey had separated from Mottola.
Throughout her career, Carey has sold more than 200 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time. In 1998, she was honored as the world's best-selling recording artist of the 1990s at the World Music Awards. Carey was also named the best-selling female artist of the millennium in 2000. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, she is the third-best-selling female artist in the United States, with 63.5 million certified albums. With the release of "Touch My Body" (2008), Carey gained her 18th number-one single in the United States, more than any other solo artist. In 2012, Carey was ranked second on VH1's list of the "100 Greatest Women in Music". Aside from her commercial accomplishments, Carey has won five Grammy Awards, 19 World Music Awards, 11 American Music Awards, and 31 Billboard Music Awards. Referred to as the "songbird supreme" by the Guinness World Records, she is famed for her five-octave vocal range, power, melismatic style and signature use of the whistle register.
The lead single, "Beautiful" featuring singer Miguel, was released on May 6, 2013, and peaked at number 15 on the Hot 100.Carey taped a performance of "Beautiful" along with a medley of her greatest hits on May 15, 2013; the taping aired on the American Idol finale the following day. On October 14, 2013, Carey announced that the album's former title track has been chosen as the second single; it premiered via Facebook on November 11, 2013. During a Q&A; session following the song's release, Carey gave an update about the album, stating: "Now I've been inspired to add two more songs, so we're almost there. I can't even express this properly but I feel like this is gonna be my favorite album".[220] Following another song release, "You're Mine (Eternal)", it was announced that The Art of Letting Go would no longer be the title of the album. After the final name was announced, Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse was released on May 27, 2014. A fourth single, "You Don't Know What to Do" featuring rapper Wale, was released on June 30, 2014 with limited success, not charting in her home country of the US but peaking at number 2 on the South Korea GAON International chart and 14 on the Belgium Ultratip Wallonia chart

Alabama Music Office.com goes to east Birmingham to attend a performance by Blue Lou Marini & Ray Reach at St. Martin's in The Pines Retirement Community on November 12, 2014.
"Blue" Lou Marini, Jr. (born May 13, 1945) is an American saxophonist, arranger and composer. He is noted for his work in the jazz, rock, blues and soul music traditions, and more popularly, for being an original member of the Blues Brothers band as well as featuring in the eponymous, very successful movie in 1980.
Marini has spent most of his professional life working as a sideman and arranger. In 2001, Marini recorded his first recording as a leader, with Ray Reach and the Magic City Jazz Orchestra, titled "Lou's Blues" (released 2003). This recording features his arrangements and compositions, many of which have become favorites for the Lab Bands at the University of North Texas. The liner notes[1] of the CD were written by Grammy Award winning composer / arranger / producer Bob Belden. Lou is currently working on a new CD project, again collaborating with Ray Reach, with vocals by his son, Lou Marini III.
Lou Marini, Jr. is an unsung jazz hero. Ask any top New York jazz musician who Lou Marini is, and they will tell you he's one of the absolute best jazz musicians in New York. Yet, because he has made a name for himself as a sideman in various high profile pop groups (Steely Dan, James Taylor, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Saturday Night Live Band, the Blues Brothers, etc.), he is all but ignored by the jazz press. This is wrong, because "Lou's Blues" displays Lou Marini's incredible talent and skill as both a composer and as a multi-woodwind player of the highest possible calibre. Lou has a lot to say, and all should listen.

Raymond Everett Reach, Jr. (born August 3, 1948) is an American pianist, vocalist and educator residing in Birmingham, Alabama, now serving as Director of Student Jazz Programs for the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, director of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame All-Stars and President and CEO of Ray Reach Music and Magic City Music Productions. He is noted for his versatility and mastery of many diverse styles. In addition, he is an accomplished guitarist, arranger, composer, conductor and music producer. As a studio musician, he has played on hundreds of recordings of all descriptions. He has composed, arranged and performed in a variety of genre, and is well known for his work in Pop, R & B, Motown/Soul, Gospel, Rock, Classic Rock, Country (contemporary and traditional), Contemporary Christian, Classical and jazz music, and is perhaps best known for his work in the jazz idiom, combining straight-ahead jazz piano stylings with Sinatra-style vocals. Like many male jazz vocalists, Reach's jazz repertoire centers on the classic popular standards and jazz standards of the Great American Songbook. However, he differs from many of his jazz vocal colleagues in that he does most of his own arrangements and accompanies himself on the piano.
