Quality of life (QOL) is the general well-being of individuals and societies. QOL has a wide range of contexts, including the fields of international development, healthcare, politics and employment. It is important not to mix up the concept of QOL with a more recent growing area of health related QOL (HRQOL). When we look at HRQOL we in effect look at QOL and its relationship with health.
Quality of life should not be confused with the concept of standard of living, which is based primarily on income.
Standard indicators of the quality of life include not only wealth and employment but also the built environment, physical and mental health, education, recreation and leisure time, and social belonging.
According to ecological economist Robert Costanza:
One approach, called engaged theory, outlined in the journal of Applied Research in the Quality of Life, posits four domains in assessing quality of life: ecology, economics, politics and culture. In the domain of culture, for example, it includes the following subdomains of quality of life:

Crash Course (also known as Driving Academy) is a 1988 made for television teen film directed by Oz Scott.
Crash Course centers on a group of high schoolers in a driver’s education class; many for the second or third time. The recently divorced teacher, super-passive Larry Pearl, is on thin ice with the football fanatic principal, Principal Paulson, who is being pressured by the district superintendent to raise driver’s education completion rates or lose his coveted football program. With this in mind, Principal Paulson and his assistant, with a secret desire for his job, Abner Frasier, hire an outside driver’s education instructor with a very tough reputation, Edna Savage, aka E.W. Savage, who quickly takes control of the class.
The plot focuses mostly on the students and their interactions with their teachers and each other. In the beginning, Rico is the loner with just a few friends, Chadley is the bookish nerd with few friends who longs to be cool and also longs to be a part of Vanessa’s life who is the young, friendly and attractive girl who had to fake her mother’s signature on her driver’s education permission slip. Kichi is the hip-hop Asian kid who often raps what he has to say and constantly flirts with Maria, the rich foreign girl who thinks that the right-of-way on the roadways always goes to (insert awesomely fake foreign Latino accent) “my father’s limo”. Finally you have stereotypical football meathead J.J., who needs to pass his English exam to keep his eligibility and constantly asks out and gets rejected by Alice, the tomboy whose father owns “Santini & Son” Concrete Company. Alice is portrayed as being the “son” her father wanted.
Live Music Now is the name of several connected charities around the world, who bring high-quality live music to people in challenging circumstances who rarely, if ever, have the opportunity to experience live music. It was the original idea of the violinist Yehudi Menuhin , who founded the first Live Music Now in the UK in 1977, together with his friend Ian Stouztker CBE.
'Music, amongst all the great arts, is the language which penetrates most deeply into the human spirit, reaching people through every barrier, disability, language and circumstance. This is why it has been my dream to bring music back into the lives of those people whose lives are especially prone to stress and suffering... so that it might comfort, heal and bring delight.' - Yehudi Menuhin
Live Music Now was first founded in 1977 in the United Kingdom by the violinist Yehudi Menuhin and Founder Chairman, Ian Stoutzker CBE. By 2013, Live Music Now UK had reached two million people through over 50,000 workshops and interactive performances. In September 2014 it was announced that Julian Lloyd Webber, who had recorded and performed with Yehudi Menuhin, would become a spokesperson for Live Music Now in the United Kingdom.
James Carroll Booker III (December 17, 1939 – November 8, 1983) was a New Orleans rhythm and blues musician born in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. Booker's unique style combined rhythm and blues with jazz standards. Musician Dr. John described Booker as "the best black, gay, one-eyed junkie piano genius New Orleans has ever produced." Flamboyant in personality, he was known as "the Black Liberace".
Booker was the son and grandson of Baptist ministers, both of whom played the piano. He spent most of his childhood on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where his father pastored a church. Booker received a saxophone as a gift from his mother, but he demonstrated a stronger interest in the keyboard. He first played organ in his father's churches.
After returning to New Orleans in his early adolescence, Booker attended the Xavier Academy Preparatory School. He learned some elements of his keyboard style from Tuts Washington and Edward Frank. Booker was highly skilled in classical music and played Bach and Chopin, among other composers. He also mastered and memorized solos by Erroll Garner and Liberace. His performances combined elements of stride, blues, gospel and Latin piano styles.
Here's ten year-old James, who acquired a head injury after falling off a changing table at nursery when he was just nine months old. He's paraplegic and can really only move his head. We've lent James a computer that he controls just by moving his eyes, and now he can do things for himself for the first time. James uses his eyes as the mouse to play games, make choices and select music - and communicate through an artificial voice. "He was able to tell me that he loved me for the first time," said James' mum, "And it's made a difference to the way his sisters interact with him... it's brought them closer together." James' nurse Denise agrees. "When James first started to use eye-gaze it was like a light bulb going off in his head, like he really believed that he could do it." Our cha...

"The Co$t of Inequality" will examine findings disclosed in Beyond the Talk: Improving Race Relations, the landmark JCCI study completed in 2002. The study's findings included the following statistics: • Forty-four percent of black households in Duval County earned income below $15,000, compared to 19 percent of white households and 15 percent of Asian households. • Sixty-seven percent of black students in Duval County public schools participate in the free or reduced-cost lunch program. That figure compares to 27- and 55-percent participation for white and Hispanic students, respectively. • During the past decade, through boom times and bust, black unemployment rates have remained more than twice the rate of white unemployment. • In 1999, white male professionals earned an average of 3...

On Thursday, November 12, Wake Forest University Professor James Otteson gave a spirited defense of capitalism, but argued that we should take seriously some of the moral concerns that lead people to embrace socialism. Otteson conceded that most people today do not embrace full-blown socialism, but he did say that many support “socialist-inclined” policy, which advocates centralized economic decision making over individual autonomy and choice. Professor Otteson began by emphasizing the enormous diversity of human preferences, and the complexity of information government agents would need to gather and process in order to understand how to satisfy their preferences. This is especially true, he argued, because our preferences are often opaque even to ourselves: individual preferences change...

Wiki for the most recent updates: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaia_hypothesis There are two forms of Gaia theory, weak gaia theory and strong gaia theory. The weak gaia theory is pretty much just saying that the earth and the organisms within it are an interconnected system with feedback loops and therefore capable of self-regulating up to a point. Strong gaia theory argues for the system to be considered an organism, and some take it further to talk about an organism with a singular purpose or even consciousness. Weak gaia is just systems theory applied to the earth and makes good sense, while the strong version is controversial. Unfortunately a lot of the good points in this work have been rubbished because people associate the good stuff with the strong theory. My impression is that L...
