Peshawar (Pashto: پېښور Pēx̌awar; Hindko: پيشور Pishōr; Urdu: پشاور Pishāwar; Persian: پیشاور P īshāwar; 
pronunciation (help·info)) is the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as NWFP), and the administrative centre and central economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated in a large valley near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass. Known as "City on the Frontier", Peshawar's strategic location on the crossroads of Central Asia and South Asia has made it one of the most culturally vibrant and lively cities in the greater region. Peshawar is irrigated by various canals of the Kabul River and by its right tributary, the Bara River.
Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities. In the last three decades, there has been a significant increase in urban population, in part due to internal migration of people in search of better employment opportunities, education, and services, and in part because of the influx of Afghan refugees and other people displaced by military operations and civil unrest in neighboring regions. Peshawar is the major educational, political and business center of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

On the morning of December 16, armed members of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan entered the Army Public School in Peshawar, the largest city in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The men moved from classroom to classroom, telling the schoolchildren to say their prayers before shooting them at point-blank range. According to the military, the massacre left 141 people dead, including 132 children. On the morning of December 16, armed members of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan entered the Army Public School in Peshawar, the largest city in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The men moved from classroom to classroom, telling the schoolchildren to say their prayers before shooting them at point-blank range. According to the military, the massacre left 141 people dead, including 132 children.
VICE News traveled to Peshawar to meet with survivors, paramedics, and relatives of victims of the attack, and to learn how the region is coming to terms with the massacre.

This is an update: Finally some GREAT news, thanks to efforts of private enthusiasts, civil society heritage bodies and the Culture and Tourism department of the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly NWFP) the fire engines rolled out of their shed in Gor Khatri for renovation in June 2010. Mohsin & Romano experts of the Vintage & Classic Car Club of Pakistan deserve credit for giving a new life to these priceless beauties, which were at the verge of turning into metal junk.
Maureen Lines' FHT, SCN, Albert Godin, Riaz Noor (ex Chief Sec NWFP) , Sufyan Kakakhel, Azam Khan MD STC and the museum authorities deserve credit for making this happen. A big thank you to all. Time line:- 2002: SCN report by Sufyan Kakakhel & Shaheen Buneri appeared in newspapers. 2005: Fire Engines were featured in Insight Travel Guide to Pakistan whose NWFP section was edited by me, 2007-8: Efforts to save the fire engines intensified. Albert Godin introduced Mohsin Ikram and Romano Karim Yusaf of VCCCP to SCN/ FHT. Ishrat Hayyat published a report in The News. 2009: FHT made a proposal for restoration and sent it to the Culture and Tourism Dept. Sarhad Tourism Coporation responded positively and recommended Culture Dept to sanction a sum of Rs 2 Million to FHT for their preservation. 2010: Fire Engines transported to a shed in University Town, Peshawar for renovation.
