Following the death of Alexander, his vast domains were split up among four of his military commanders, and thus commenced the age of Greek influence throughout the Mediterranean World. The eleventh chapter of Daniel, though complicated and challenging to read, provides insight into this era and evidence of God's providence in protecting his people during turbulent times. 438 BC. The Parthenon is complete. This masterpiece is the crowning achievement of a remarkable century for the Greek people. They have enjoyed a burst of creativity rarely seen in the history of mankind. Led by Athens, the world's first democracy, the Greeks charged to new and dazzling heights of accomplishment. Art and form combined with engineering to create some of the most incredible structures ever seen. The brilliance of their ideas had conquered the world's imagination, but Greece's territorial ambitions were stymied by one civil war after another.
It would take one man's desire for conquest and domination to unify Greece and then vanquish the world. Without Alexander the Great, it is possible Greece's Golden Era would have been just a footnote in history, but Alexander's triumph had its price. The Athenian experiment with democracy had ended and tens of thousands would die during Alexander's relentless attacks on Persia and Egypt. Still, his armies carried Greek life, culture and values far abroad and this empire became known as the Hellenistic World. Greece's amazing engineering achievements and ideas are still with us today.
From Pergamon, a city that still stands today as testament to the genius of Greek city planning and engineering, to theaters with acoustics that still amaze sound engineers today, to the world's first lighthouse and one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, this episode will examine the architecture and infrastructure engineered by the Greek Empire. Engineering an Empire is an excellent series and definitely worth watching.
............................................
Plutarch, "Moralia: On the Fortune of Alexander", I, 328d, 329a:
“O wondrous power of Philosophic Instruction, that brought the Indians to worship Greek gods, and the Scythians to bury their dead, not to devour them! We admire Carneades' power, which made Cleitomachus, formerly called Hasdrubal, and a Carthaginian by birth, adopt Greek ways ... But when Alexander was civilizing Asia, Homer was commonly read, and the children of the Persians, of the Susianians, and of the Gedrosians learned to chant the tragedies of Sophocles and Euripides. Yet through Alexander Bactria and the Caucasus learned to revere the gods of the Greeks... Alexander established more than seventy cities among savage tribes, and sowed all Asia with Greek magistracies ... Egypt would not have its Alexandria, nor Mesopotamia its Seleucia, nor Sogdiana its Prophthasia, nor India its Bucephalia, nor the Caucasus a Greek city, for by the founding of cities in these places savagery was extinguished and the worse element, gaining familiarity with the better, changed under its influence.”

The birth of Greek culture and art were born between the IX and VIII centuries before Christ on the peninsula of Attica, the Peloponnese peninsula, the peninsula on the west coast of Asia Minor and the Aegean islands. The importance of their art and culture is enormous.
Before I have to talk about the Peloponnesian Wars. Were wars between 431-404 BC where greeks and spartans fought. Finally, the spartans won and had the hegemony.
During the Hellenistic Period, that goes from 323 BC (death of Alexander the Great) till 30 BC (suicide of Cleopatra VII and Marcus Antonius), the importance of Greece proper within the Greek-speaking world declined sharply. The great centers of Hellenistic culture were Alexandria and Antioch, capitals of Ptolemaic Egypt and Seleucid Syria respectively. Cities such as Pergamon, Ephesus, Rhodes and Seleucia were also important, and increasing urbanization of the Eastern Mediterranean was characteristic of the time. Alexander the Great did great discoveries and Greece was more openminded.
Skopas. Was the inventor of the pathetic style, called so by the pathos (feeling, expression). Pain expression.
Frontons of the Temple of Athena at Tegea: are very fragmented.
Example of Skopas sculpture: look at the bodies... Skopas sculpted so.
Funerary stele: attributed to Skopas.
Maenad: a meanad is a mythological feminin being related with Dioniso. This sculpture has pathos, with that extreme movement.
Pothos: or Apollo Kitharoidos, player of the zither.
Meleager's head: the head of Meleager.
Meleager: the myth is the hunt dangerous Calydonian Boar, sent by Artemis as punishment for forgetting Oeneus having dedicated sacrifices. Oeneus organized a hunt to kill him and Meleager was the one who did it.
Mausoleum of Halicarnassus: the sculptures of this lost building (one of the Wonders, if you remember), were made, among others, by Skopas. The themes were the Amazonomachy and a race of chariots.
Mausolo (Briaxis): attributed to the sculptor Briaxis, is a very realistic sculpture.
Eirene and Ploutos (Kephistodos): he probably was the father of Praxiteles. Is represented a woman with a baby.
Praxiteles. Most known to create the praxitelian curve.
Hermes and the Infant Dionysus: appear Hermes that go with Dionysus to the place where the nimphs are going to care about the baby.
Apollo Sauroctonos: appear Apollo going to kill a lizard.
Resting Satyr: the curve is even greater.
Aphrodite of Cnidus: she is just leaving the bathroom, being very shy to be Aphrodite.
Aphrodite of Arles: probably is not of him, but by the way that she put the arms, could be.
Lisipo. He was the favourite sculptor of Alexander the Great. The Polykleitos canon is bigger.
Apoxyomenos: represents a young athlete. He is removing the sand stuck in his body due to sweat with a strigil. If in the classical period, the sculpture had contrapposto, now has movement of arms.
Eros: with lot of movement, he is with his bow.
Agias: similar to Apoxyomenos, but with more volume in the muscles, and the mouth opened, with deep eyes.
Farnese Hercules: he is full of muscle, and is a very heavy sculpture. Here there is a great study of the human muscles.
Hermes: a bronze sculpture of Hermes resting.
Socrates, Plato and Homer: few portraits, but not sure if are by him. Probably are from full statues.
Alexander the Great: Lisipo was his sculptor, and represents a man with a fiery power but at same time, very intelligent and kind.
Sarcophagus of Alexander: with scenes of hunt and battles.
