Spanish/Nat
One of South America's most wanted drug smugglers was captured by Colombian secret police in the north of Bogota.
Thursday's swoop came after a three month operation headed by Colombian and Venezuelan authorities together with the U-S Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
Fernando Florez was presented at a press conference held by Colombian National Police on the day of the arrest.
One of the Cali drug cartel's biggest drug smugglers was captured by Colombian secret police on Thursday.
Fernando Florez was escorted into a press conference held by the Colombian National Police.
Florez is Venezuelan by origin and is known as 'El Gordo' - the fat one.
He has spent most of his time in Colombia working with the Cali drug cartel.
General Luis Guillevert, Chief of National Police operations confirmed the nature of the arrest.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"More than five tonnes of cocaine have been siezed in the south of La Florida, using an undercover operation and our contacts in Venezuela. These are the same methods for dealing with the Cali drugs cartel."
SUPER CAPTION: General Luis Guillevert, Chief of National Police operations
A three month operation finally led under cover cops to a luxury hotel in the north of Bogota.
Authorities from three different countries were involved with the swoop.
Colombian and Venezuelan secret agents were working together with the U-S Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"With the help of the Colombian attorney general, special agents from the Colombian police today succeeded in capturing one of the leaders of drug trafficking in Venezuela. The action happened in an area in the north of Bogota."
SUPER CAPTION: General Luis Guillevert, Chief of National Police operations
Joint forces tracked Florez' movements for three months as he networked his contacts in Colombia.
Over five tonnes of cocaine destined for the U-S was siezed by the operation in Florencia.
These pictures show the Colombian forces inspecting a similar haul in December 1997.
Florez is wanted in the U-S for smuggling drugs into the country via Florida.
He is also wanted in Venezuela.
During his stay in Colombia, Florez had taken on two separate Colombian identities.
But the secret police were not fooled for long.
Both sets of finger prints for the two fake identities matched Florez' own.

Deep in guerrilla territory drug growers’ tip their precious harvest of coca leaves into a worn oil drum. In their warehouse laboratory they sweat until their mulching and stirring yields a sack of white gold: raw cocaine. In this territory, such rich rewards must be shared with the guerrilla. With calculator and log book a FARC guerrilla calculates their cut. A high-ranking member of FARC command defends their use of drug money. "It isn't true that we are a drug cartel. As there is a war tax in Colombia against the guerrilla, paid by the powerful, we also charge with a war tax, but we do it to defend the poor class in Colombia"
There are now one and a half million displaced persons in Colombia with no end to the war in sight. FARC already control 40% of the country and they’re gunning for more. “We've won our space...we're closer to the cities…logically, the course of the fight has to be in that direction," says a high ranking member of FARC’s command. In the next few weeks Bogota itself could come under attack. A former general predicts the day when Colombia will be split between a guerrilla controlled South and an army held North.
With huge political and historical insight, this powerful documentary delves into the reality of Colombia’s brutal civil war.

Spanish/Nat
One of the leaders of Colombia's Cali drug cartel has confessed to charges of drug trafficking in return for a reduced sentence.
Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela - serving time at La Picota high security prison - will be sentenced in a few weeks.
In Colombia drug trafficking carries a prison term of 18 to 24 years. Rodriguez Orejuela's sentence will be reduced by three to four years because of his confession.
Cali cartel kingpin Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela makes his home at La Picota Prison in Bogota, Colombia.
This is the same jail from where another Cali kingpin - Fernando Santacruz Londono - escaped earlier this year.
Rodriguez Orejuela admitted in a deposition Thursday that he shipped 1,650 pounds (800 kilos) of cocaine to the United States in 1982 and 1983.
He told prosecutors he accepts responsibility for the charges against him.
Rodriguez Orejuela has been cooperating with authorities since his arrest last June.
His confession may trim his sentence by three or four years.
La Picota is a maximum security jail.
Prison guard salaries are among the highest in the country to avoid corruption.
When Fernando Santacruz Londono escaped in January, La Picota's director resigned and the new management has done everything possible to beef up security and avoid another embarrassing escape.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
\"As you can see the prison is equipped with security elements which make it like a special pavilion. It is not that this type of security does not exist in other establishments. All Colombian jails have security, communications and elements to insure prisoners' loss of liberty.\"
SUPER CAPTION: Miller Rubio, Press Officer, Penitentiary Institute of Colombia (INPEC)
Five other charges of drug trafficking and illegal enrichment are pending against Rodriguez Orejuela.
The prosecutor's office said that if he is convicted of those charges any sentences would be served concurrently.
Rodriguez Orejuela, his brother and four other Cali leaders were arrested last year in a crackdown by Colombian police amid intense U-S pressure.
Miguel Rodriguez has already confessed and is awaiting sentencing.
The Cali cartel is believed to control 80 percent of the world's cocaine market and a growing share of the global heroin trade.
