Bhutia scored in his international debut for India against Uzbekistan in the 1995 Nehru Cup becoming India's youngest ever goalscorer, at 19.[57] In the 1997 SAFF Championship, India beat the Maldives 5--1 in the final, Bhutia was responsible for one goal.[58] Two years later, the tournament was held in Goa and India successfully defended their title by beating Bangladesh 2--0 in the final. Bhutia scored the second goal for India after Bruno Coutinho opened the scoring and Bhutia was named as the tournament's most valuable player.[59]
He also netted two goals in the final of the 2002 LG Cup held in Vietnam, in which India beat the host nation 3--2, Bhutia's goals came either side of half-time.[60] The football tournament of the 2003 Afro-Asian Games saw India finish as runners-up behind Uzbekistan. Bhutia scored two goals in the tournament, both of which came in the 5--3 semi-final win over Zimbabwe.[61] In the 2007 Nehru Cup, Bhutia scored a penalty in a 6--0 victory over Cambodia in the opening match of the tournament.[62] He also scored in a 1--0 win over Bangladesh[63] and a 3--0 win over Kyrgyzstan.[64] Bhutia played a significant part in the final as he was involved in the build-up to N. P. Pradeep's winning goal against Syria during which India won 1--0 to become champions.[65]
The next successful SAFF Championship was in 2005 where Bhutia was captain, in the group stages he scored a goal in a 3--0 victory over Bhutan but did not score in the other two matches.[66] India progressed to the semi-finals during which Bhutia played in the 1--0 win over the Maldives.[66] The final was a repeat of the 1999 final, as Bangladesh were the opposition, and once again India triumphed 2--0 during which Bhutia scored the second goal in the 81st minute from close range after Mehrajuddin Wadoo's 33rd minute opener.[67] He received the award for the Most Valuable Player and also the Fair Play trophy.[67] The 2008 SAFF Championship started with a 4--0 win over neighbouring Nepal, Bhutia scored the second goal in the 34th minute.[68] It turned out to be Bhutia's only goal of the tournament, however, he did have several chances to score in the semi-final against Bhutan which saw India win 2--1 to reach the final.[69] In the final, India failed to defend their title after losing 1--0 to the Maldives.[70]
He scored twice in a 2--1 victory in the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup against Turkmenistan to reach the semi-finals.[71] The Sikkimese Sniper scored a goal in the final against Tajikistan, during which India won 4--1 thanks to a Sunil Chhetri hat-trick;[72] the victory also allowed them to automatically qualify for the 2011 AFC Asian Cup.[73] He was also selected as the most valuable player of the tournament, finishing with three goals.[41][73]
The 2009 Nehru Cup was significant for Bhutia, as he earned his 100th cap for India in a 2--1 win over Kyrgyzstan, becoming the first Indian player to reach this milestone.[6] He also scored the first goal in this match to help the team recover from their opening day defeat to Lebanon.[74] In the match against Sri Lanka, Bhutia again scored an opening goal which helped India to win 3--1 and solidified their chances of reaching the final. He was adjudged as the "man of the match" for his performance.[75] Bhutia missed the final match of the round-robin, as India were already guaranteed a spot in the deciding match. He was also adjudged as "Player of the Tournament" for his stellar performances in all of the matches, including the decider where they beat Syria in a penalty shootout.[76][77]
At the 2011 AFC Asian Cup in Qatar, Bhutia was injured for their first two games against Australia and Bahrain, but he came on as a second half substitute against South Korea, but failed to save India, losing 4--1 as they were eliminated. Shortly after the Asian Cup, he announced his retirement for India with a record of 43 goals in 107 appearances.

Baichung Bhutia (Hindi: बाईचुंग भुटिया) (born 15 December 1976 in Tinkitam, Sikkim, India) is an Indian footballer. He is considered to be the torchbearer of Indian football in the international arena.[2] He is currently the captain of the Indian team[3] and plays for East Bengal. He is often nicknamed the Sikkimese Sniper because of his shooting skills.[4][5]
During his career Bhutia has had four spells at I-League football team East Bengal Club, the club where he started his career. When he signed for English club Bury F.C. in 1999 he became the first Indian footballer to play professional football in Europe. In addition to this he had a short loan spell at the Malaysian football club Perak FA. As well as this he has played for JCT Mills, where he won the league once, and Mohun Bagan, where he failed to win the league once in two spells, in his native India. He is also India's most capped player and is currently their captain. His international footballing honours include winning the Nehru Cup, LG Cup, South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship (3 times) and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup.
Off the field, Bhutia is known for winning the reality television programme Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, which caused much controversy with his then-club Mohun Bagan, and for refusing to carry the Olympic torch in support of the Tibetan independence movement. He also has a football stadium named after him in honour of his contribution to Indian football, in addition to this Bhutia has won many awards such as the Arjuna Award and the Padma Shri.

Captain Baichung Bhutia scored from a spectacular bicycle kick while India got off to a perfect start with a 4-0 thumping of Nepal in the SAFF Championship
MALE: Captain Baichung Bhutia scored from a spectacular bicycle kick while India got off to a perfect start with a 4-0 thumping of Nepal in the SAFF Championship opener at Maldives National Stadium here on Tuesday.
After N P Pradeep had put defending champions ahead in the 26th minute, Bhutia chested down a Climax Lawrence header with his back towards the Nepal goal before firing a back-volley to double his side's lead in the 34th minute.
Sunil Chetri took the game away from Nepal with a no less brilliant diving header in the 68th minute before substitute Sushil Kumar Singh rounded off the tally seven minutes from time.
India, however, had to play the last 15 minutes of the game with 10 men after defender N S Manju, whose selection for the tourney was doubtful due to an injury, had to leave the field after suffering a hamstring pull and they had made all the three substitutions by then.
India took time to settle down in the rain-soaked match but once they found their grooves, the Nepalese, coached by German Thomas Flath, were simply outclassed. It was Nepal who set the pace of the game initially with some threatening moves inside the Indian box though they could not give any serious problem to Indian back four of Mahesh Gawli, Gouramangi Singh, Deepak Mondal and N S Manju.
Nepal striker Jumanu Rai missed a golden opportunity in the 24th minute and his left footer from inside the box.
But, the Indian forwards could not be kept at bay for long and they took the lead just after the 25th minute mark with Pradeep jumping over his Nepalese marker to connect a Steven Dias' free-kick resulted after Nepal defender Parbat Pandey made a dangerous tackle on Dias. Bhutia then got the cushion for India and the Sikkimese sniper showed his class with a back-volley shot past Nepal 'kepeer Ritesh Thapa after a fine chest control of a midfielder Climax Lawrence head pass.
After resumption, Nepal tried to come back into the match even as rain became heavier and the ground becoming slippery. Sunil Chetri sealed the issue for India with a brilliant diving header, connecting a Steven Dias cross from the right in 68th minute with rival custodian standing a mute spectator.
India play Pakistan on Thursday.
India: Subrata Paul, N.S Manju, Mahesh Gawli, Deepak Mondal, Gouramangi Singh (Anwar Ali), Renedy Singh, N.P. Pradeep, (Mehrajuddin Wadoo), Sunil Chhetri, Baichung Bhutia (Sushil Singh), Steven Dias, Climax Lawrence

Baichung Bhutia chronicles his foray into the football field, a much disregarded and overpassed sport in India.
From humble beginnings in a household that depended on agriculture for sustenance, Baichung Bhutia has sprouted into a truly global personality. Right from the start, Baichung was a fervent sportsman, trying his hand at countless sports such as badminton and track athletics, along with football of course. His financial shortcomings never hindered his pursuit of glory, with his varsity talent bagging him myriads of scholarships that supported his climb to the international pedestal of sports. At his position as a striker, Baichung has played for the Indian National Team and bagged prestigious awards and titles such as Padmashree Award and Arjuna Award. Baichung will be retiring in 2015 from International Football and aims to expand the football training facilities in the Indian subcontinent through his partnership with Carlos Queiroz and Nike in the form of “Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools”.

Our correspondent Partha Acharya is now at New Delhi to provide exclusive updates from the Nehru Cup. There he got India's football icon Bhaichung Bhutia who has retired from the international scene after the Asia Cup and this is for the first time in the recent times, India will field themselves in the Nehru Cup without him.
Here goes the interview..
XtraTime: How much will you miss this Nehru cup?
Bhaichung: As a player I won't miss it, as I feel one should know where to draw line of finishing in every sport.
XtraTime: Do you want to give any special suggestion to Sunil Chettri?
Bhaichung: I think Sunil should play his natural game by not taking any pressure. He should enjoy his game rather than thinking too much. When Sunil used to play under my captaincy he used to play freely and would enjoy his game without any tension.
XtraTime: What is your call on the newly thought "NEW LEAGUE" ?
Bhaichung: New League will definitely bring new opportunities for the youngsters. It will also bring an upliftment in football in our country by adding both commercial as well as professional elements in it. The failures of the old league may convert into positivity in the new league.
XtraTime: Why did u not propose any footballer's name in the Arjuna nomination for the year 2012 despite of being in the selection committee?
Bhaichung: I think for this year, the entire focus was on the olympians. so nomination of any footballer wouldn't help any bit.
