The number of refugees entering the EU and Turkey has risen dramatically as a result of conflicts and crises in North Africa and the Middle East. The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reported that European countries recorded 264,000 asylum applications during the first six months of 2014, an increase of 24% from the same period the year before. The largest increase – 73% – in asylum seekers was reported by countries in Southern Europe, in particular Italy and Turkey. Refugees originated primarily from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Eritrea, and Serbia/Kosovo and North Africa. With conflict and destabilization in these regions continuing, European policy makers seek solutions that respond to both humanitarian concerns and an increasingly radicalized voting public. Participants in this session of Conversations on Europe discuss EU and Turkish responses to this growing crisis. Moderated by Ron Linden (University of Pittsburgh), the panel includes Suzanna Crage (University of Pittsburgh), Ayselin Yildiz (Yașar University, Turkey), and Franck Duvell, (University of Oxford, UK).

Environmental Degradation is a serious challenge facing us.
The Urban waste is a real challenge and threat facing our Nile Basin environmental integrity and sustainability. Should considerable magnitude of urban solid waste and sewerage stemming from residential loci and in general the urban waste finish in the Nile Basin, the livelihood of millions will be severely challenged and endangered. This is an example of the many small tributaries, which are literally flushing away litters, garbage and growing urban waste due to the connected urban sprawl and poor planning. This is part of the my research focus and from my field survey, I observed that the issue is serious in all over the territories I travelled to Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sudan, Egypt. And I assume that the case is similar in Burundi, Congo DR, Eritrea, and Tanzania. The Nile Basin Population in 2014 totaled 464,023,000 and projected to follow a doubling rate in most of the Nile Basin Riparian Territories, if not in all: Burundi (10,483,000), Democratic Republic of Congo (69,360,000), Egypt (83,387,000), Eritrea (6,536,000), Ethiopia (96,506,000), Kenya (45,546,000), Rwanda (12,100,000), South Sudan (11,739,000), Sudan (38,764,000), Uganda (38,845,000), and the United Republic of Tanzania (50,757,000), the magnitude of urban waste could be estimated in relation to the demography. The authorities have legislations in place, but there are challenges and constraints of implementation, follow-up, human capacities, poor institutional capacities, financial and technological constraints. The Policy of NOT on our Backyards (NOBs) could apply also to this huge case...NOT from the Nile on our Mediterranean. (NOMs) measures should be applied for major ownership of problems, partnership in problem solving, accountability and transparency for the benefit of the collectivity. The Nile Basin is luckily endowed with wonderful landscapes and fascinating nature and still human dimensioned assets and that should be guarded.
Not all the people will afford to drink from Rwnenzori or Wechecha mountains. so people should safeguard their environment from the grass-root.
