A U.S.-Philippine defense agreement that would help counter China's growing naval power in the disputed South China Sea has yet to be implemented more than a year after it was signed, and could now face a fresh political hurdle in Manila.

Fake eels could show that we are underestimating the brain power of our gilled relatives. Redouan Bshary of the University of Neuchatel explains how his observations of grouper fish hunting together with moray eels plus inventive experiments with fake eels led him to discover fish abilities known previously only in primates. Footage from Bshary, Hans Fricke and Alex Vail shows off the groupers' sea-smarts in the lab and in the wild.

A small group of Japanese and Philippine lawmakers agreed Wednesday to promote peaceful resolution of maritime disputes in Asia on the basis of international law and to seek establishment of a "Parliamentarians' League for Maritime Security in Asia."
"We believe legislators have a role to play in discussing these issues among themselves and suggesting recommendations to their respective governments so that these conflicts can be resolved under international law," Hiroshi Nakada of the newly established, right-leaning The Party for Future Generations told a press conference on the last day of a three-day visit
Nakada was joined by five other legislators from the same opposition political party on a trip that included meetings with legislators from the Philippine House of Representatives and Senate, as well as coast guard officials.
The six, together with 13 Philippine congressmen, signed a "Joint Document for Cooperation on Promotion of the Rule of Law at Sea," which says both sides "will encourage members of their respective parliaments to join efforts to establish a parliamentary association, namely, Parliamentarians' League for Maritime Security in Asia, aiming at protecting and promoting maritime order based on international law."
It also says they "recognize that at sea, states should make and clarify their claims based on international law; states should not use force or coercion in pursuing their claims; and states shall seek to settle disputes by peaceful means and avoid any unilateral attempts to change the status quo through force or coercion, and will strengthen cooperation based on the common recognition."
Among the Philippine signatories was lawmaker Rodolfo Biazon, who chairs a congressional committee on defense and security.
Nakada said that after the Philippines, the political party he represents will reach out to lawmakers in Vietnam, another Southeast Asian country involved in heated maritime disputes with China in the South China Sea.
Japan, for its part, has row with China over the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, and both it and the Philippines accuse the Chinese of bullying tactics in asserting their claims.
Nakada's political party was launched in August with former Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara as its chief advisor. It has 19 members in the 480-member House of Representatives, which is dominated by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's Liberal Democratic Party.
The party advocates strengthening Japan's defense capabilities, drafting a new constitution, establishing "independent diplomacy," fostering patriotism, forming a unicameral legislature, public election of the prime minister, and protecting the "honor and dignity of the Japanese nation and its people" by countering allegations made with regard to the comfort women issue.

Malaysia, PHL Discuss Cooperation Amid Sea Dispute
A U.S.-Philippine defense agreement that would help counter China's growing naval power in the disputed South China Sea has yet to be implemented more than a year after it was signed, and could now face a fresh political hurdle in Manila.
The deal gives U.S. troops wide access to local military bases and approval to build facilities to store fuel and equipment for maritime security, but it was effectively frozen after left-wing politicians and other opponents challenged its constitutionality in the Philippine Supreme Court last year.
The court is expected to issue a ruling before U.S. President Barack Obama visits Manila for an Asia-Pacific summit in November. The deal, called an Enhanced Defence Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), was signed just days before Obama last traveled to Manila in April 2014.
In another complication, 13 senators in the 24-member Philippine Senate have signed a draft resolution insisting the upper house scrutinize the deal before it takes effect.
"In this resolution, we are saying we will not allow the power of the Senate to be eroded," Senator Miriam Santiago, the principal author of the measure, said in a statement last week. The proposed resolution will be lodged in late July, when the Senate reconvenes after a recess.
While a Senate resolution would not be binding on President Benigno Aquino, it would put pressure on him to allow senators to debate the agreement, which would delay it further, Philippine political experts told Reuters.
With national elections due in May 2016, politicians are already focusing on who will contest the presidency when Aquino steps down, possibly putting some congressional business on the back-burner. The Philippine constitution allows presidents to only serve a single six-year term.
"Aquino is increasingly losing his power to influence Congress," said political expert Ramon Casiple.
Further delays might raise eyebrows in Washington, experts said, given Manila has been the most vocal critic of Beijing among the claimants to the South China Sea and has urged the United States to be more assertive in pushing back against China's rapid land reclamation in the waterway.
Senators have said they also want to review an agreement to be negotiated with Tokyo that would allow Japanese military aircraft and naval vessels to use bases in the Philippines for refueling and picking up supplies.
The Senate has ratified previous Philippine defense agreements, including a decades-old security treaty with the United States.
Aquino has said the EDCA only needs executive approval because it's an addition to existing security arrangements.

STORYLINE:
Representatives from 12 member states of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation council (BSEC) met in Moscow on Wednesday for talks aimed at strengthening security and stability in the region.
Amid tense relations between Russia and Georgia, the Georgian Foreign Minister Gela Bezhuashvili flew to Moscow to hold talks with his Russian counterpart on the sidelines of the economic council.
When Georgia briefly detained four purported Russian spies in late September, Moscow responded with a sweeping transport and postal blockade on Georgia and a crackdown on Georgian migrants living in Russia.
Bezhuashvili voiced hope for an easing of tensions between his Caucasus nation and its giant northern neighbour.
"We will be very keen and open to discuss how to end this unusual situation. I think there are good opportunities to do that because we have some understanding of each others interests. We need to dig deeper and to understand them better in order to apply the tools to improve our relationship" he told reporters.
Moscow has shrugged off Western calls for lifting the sanctions against Georgia, saying it was acting because the Georgian government is plotting to bring its breakaway provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia back into the fold by force, allegations Georgia denies.
Meanwhile, Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister welcomed North Korea's announcement that it would return to the six-party talks on its nuclear disarmament and called for the negotiations to resume as soon as possible.
"A date for the renewed talks is being discussed now and we hope it won't be far away." Lavrov told reporters.
Lavrov introduced Serbia as Russia's successor to the chairmanship of the organisation.
Vuk Draskovic, Serbia's Foreign Minister told reporters in Moscow of his country's gratitude of the support it has received from Russia:
"I am very grateful to minister Lavrov, to President Putin and generally to this great state for supporting Serbia to protect (in protecting) the territorial integrity of our state and to approach compromise (in finding compromising) sustainable solutions respecting the legitimate rights of Albanians (and the) territorial integrity of the Serbian charter of United Nations."

Anchorage, Alaska
Alaska is the largest state in the United States in land area at 570,374 square miles, over twice the size of Texas
Mount McKinley, or Denali "The High One" is the highest mountain in the United States and North America with an elevation of 20,320 feet.
Anchorage is Alaska's largest city with over 291,000 residents. At 61 degrees north is it slightly more northern than Oslo and Stockholm.
Because of the northern latitude, in the summer the days are very long although the temperatures rarely rise above the 70s. But that doesn't stop Alaska's residents from shedding their parkas for shorts the moment the sun appears.

China calls for more trust and cooperation
High-level talks between China and the United States aimed at strengthening ties have wrapped up in Washington. The two-day talks were aimed at promoting greater cooperation between the two economic giants. However, this year's talks were also clouded by mistrust over territorial disputes in the South China Sea. China's Ministry of National Defense says it wants military ties with the US that are conducive to regional stability.

Seventy years after its imperial forces were kicked out of the South China Sea, Japan is quietly moving back into the region, forging security ties with the Philippines and Vietnam as both Southeast Asian nations try to cope with China's territorial ambitions.
Tokyo's security cooperation is broad-based: It is supplying maritime patrol boats to the two countries while Japan will hold its first naval exercises with the Philippines in the coming months. Japanese military doctors are even advising Vietnamese submariners on how to deal with decompression sickness.

China's military on Thursday accused the Philippines of trying to "rope in" other countries to the dispute over ownership of the South China Sea and stir regional tension after Japan joined a military drill with the Philippines. According to Japanese and Philippine officials, a Japanese surveillance aircraft, with three Filipino guest crew members, this week flew at 5,000 feet above the edge of Reed Bank, an energy-rich area that is claimed by both China and the Philippines. A modern European country today, it preserved its highly international character and is known for its liberal mentality. As a founding member of EU and NATO, and host to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, the Netherlands is at the heart of international cooperation. Its small size, welcoming attitude to travellers and many sights make it a unique and fairly easy to discover destination and a great addition to any European trip.

Belgium (Dutch: België, French: Belgique, German: Belgien) is a low-lying country on the North Sea coast in the Benelux. With the majority of West European capitals within 1,000km of the Belgian capital of Brussels, and as a member of the long-standing international Benelux community, Belgium sits at the crossroads of Western Europe. Its immediate neighbours are France to the southwest, Luxembourg to the southeast, Germany to the east and the Netherlands to the north.
Understand
Belgium is a densely populated country trying to balance the conflicting demands of urbanization, transport and industry with commercial and intensive agriculture. It imports large quantities of raw materials and exports a large volume of manufactured goods, mostly to other EU countries.

The Netherlands (Dutch: Nederland, also commonly, but incorrectly, called Holland in English) is a European country, bordering Germany to the east, Belgium to the south, and France in the Caribbean as the Dutch territory Sint Maarten borders French territory Saint-Martin. The people, language, and culture of the Netherlands are referred to as "Dutch".

The PIRT (Promoting Innovative Rural Tourism) project is directed to supporting regional cooperation and cross border partnerships for economic and social development in four Black Sea Basin countries (Armenia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia) based on combined resources through creation of rural tourism networks in order to promote joint tourism development initiatives and traditional products.
The project will achieve stronger regional partnerships and cooperation through integrated utilization of physical and human resources and exchange of best practice aimed at enhancing the standards of touristic product and service delivery. All this will contribute to economic and social development in the Black Sea Basin region.
PIRT will build effective and replicable networks of capable local service providers in rural tourism, as well as sophisticated travel agencies to co- develop, market, and sell a new unique touristic product that encourages inter-flows of visitors intra-regionally and contribute to unprecedented cooperation between national authorities in the region and intra-country, aimed ultimately to sustaining the cross-border impacts of rural tourism.
The project consists of 3 main components:
A. Establishment of national and regional networks of service providers and provision of knowledge and means to them to engage and run a hospitality business in rural areas;
B. Development of a brand new, boldly innovative regional touristic product (Single Cross-border Visitor package) and its marketing targeted to the right agents for it in the marketplace;
C. Facilitation of contacts at an inter-and intra- governmental level to advocate for marketing the developed regional touristic product, thus making the contacts between country-specific networks mutually beneficial.

Oscar Anderson was an early Anchorage resident, said to be the 18th person to set foot on the area and his house, built in 1915 was the first wood-frame house in Anchorage.
The Glacier Brewhouse is both a brewery and one of Anchorage's top restaurants. The place gets busy early so it is a good idea to make reservations. Aside from rotisserie meats the menu features lots of fresh local seafood. And who ever had fresh raspberry whet beer? The brewhouse was brewing it and it was delicious. Alaska glacier bottled water is a great way to taste the purity of the environment around Anchorage. This bottled water is a popular drink for Asians who visit and refer glaciers. Although there were rave reviews about the seafood chowder and the calamari, I tried the pita with hummus which was a great appetizer that went well with the raspberry wheat beer.
One can't be in Alaska without tasting king crab legs. The fresh version is more spectacular than the deep freeze version we get in the lower 48. Alaskan halibut also shines over their southern neighbors and at Glacier Brewhouse they serve it with a healthy balsamic salad and a not so healthy side of fries.
A popular street food are reindeer hot dogs which are actually a blend of pork sausage and reindeer. I didn't taste it but I understand it is a must try, unless you are Santa Claus. There are lots of tourist shops selling made in China souvenirs but if you want something that is truly Alaskan and unique, The Oomingmak Qiviut shop is an Alaskan native cooperative that produces Muskox products.
It is owned by approximately 250 Native Alaskan women from remote coastal villages of Alaska who knit each item by hand. Each village has a signature pattern derived from traditional aspects of village life and the Eskimo culture; they may come from an ancient artifact or a beadwork design.
The name Musk Ox is deceiving, as the animal does not produce musk, nor is it related to cattle. Skeletal and behavioral studies show a closer relationship to sheep and goats Qiviut is shed naturally each year during the spring months.
About 40 miles south of Anchorage is the Alyeska ski resort -- even in May there is abundant snow -- although skiers were not about. It has an average of 643" of annual snowfall and is known for its steep terrain. For off piste skiing - Chugach Powder Guides operate snowcat or helicopter adventure in the world-famous Chugach Mountain Range. Helicopters guarantee 16 - 20,000 vertical feet of skiing per day. The cost $1125 per person. If that price is unbearable ... the normal day ski lift pass is $60 for an adult.
Not far from Alyeska is Portage and the home of the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. The center takes in injured and orphaned animals and many who cannot be released into the wild are given a permanent home at the center.
Snickers, the porcupine is one such creature that was raised in a home and has a lot of personality .. so much so that a youtube video featuring him with almost 1.8 million views. (youtube.com/watch?v=U5I5H7EeC8k)
The center had recently taken in three orphaned moose calves who keep the four-year old moose Jack company. Jack had arrived at the center as a 3-day old moose with bite marks and a broken leg .. and a 20% chance of survival.
Muskox who's warm fur is used in making Qiviut products are an arctic survivor. Their thick coat grows up to 36 inches long.
The wood bison were extinct from Alaska until they were reintroduced in 2003. They are the largest land animal in North America.
Bears are also residents at the center including brown bears, black bears and a grizzly bear.
Heading south toward the coastal town of Whittier brings one to the Whittier tunnel. This is the longest combined railroad car tunnel in North America and connects the commuters between the Prince William Sound and Turnagain Arm. The tunnel opened in 1943.
Whittier is home to lots of sea life from birds, to sea otters, seals, whales, and sea lions.
In 1964 a 9.2 magnitude earthquake (the largest ever recorded in North America)
generated a major tectonic tsunami. The waves destroyed Girdwood and Portage and evidence of the damage today is still visible from the dead wood forests in the area.

We show you the best things to do at the black sea coast of Bulgaria in this episode and give tips for excursions and tours you should do when you visit.
Bulgaria has so much more sights than just the beaches like golden sands and sunny beach - it also has more things to do than just drinking cheap alcohol and joining the parties:
The ancient towns of Sozopol and Nesebar are amongst the oldest cities of Bulgaria and are very nice located - totally worth a visit!
Varna is one of the biggest cities of the country and therefore a bit more hustling and bustling, but if you head out of town e.g. to Raponggi Beach you also find some quiet spots to relax.
Especially the coast north of Varna with it's cliffs is very stunning, the following spots have been our favorite places at the black sea coast:
- Cape Kaliakra
- Thracian Cliffs Golf & Beach Resort
- Botanical Garden of Balchik
In the next episode of our Balkan Road Trip we'll visit Skopje in Macedonia!

TUNISIA WORLD TRAVEL GUIDE Discovery Tourism Vacation
TUNISIA WORLD TRAVEL GUIDE Discovery Tourism Vacation
Tunisia is the northernmost country in Africa and, at almost 165,000 square kilometres (64,000 sq mi) in area, the smallest country in the Maghreb region of North Africa.[Notes 2] It is bordered by Algeria to the west, Libya to the southeast, and the Mediterranean Sea to the north and east.
As of 2013, its population is estimated at just under 10.8 million. Its name is derived from its capital city, Tunis, located on the country's northeast coast.
Geographically, Tunisia contains the eastern end of the Atlas Mountains and the northern reaches of the Sahara desert. Much of the rest of the country's land is fertile soil. Its 1,300 kilometres (810 mi) of coastline includes the African conjunction of the western and eastern parts of the Mediterranean Basin and, by means of the Sicilian Strait and Sardinian Channel, features the African mainland's second and third nearest points to Europe after Gibraltar.
Tunisia has a high human development index. It has an association agreement with the European Union and is a member of La Francophonie, the Arab Maghreb Union, the Arab League, and the African Union. Close relations with Europe – in particular with France and with Italy – have been forged through economic cooperation, privatisation and industrial modernization.
In 2011, a revolution resulted in the overthrow of the autocratic President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali followed by the country's first free elections. Since then, Tunisia has been consolidating democracy. The country held its first Parliamentary elections since the 2011 Arab Spring on October 26, 2014, and its Presidentials on November 23, 2014.

Testing Beijing, Japan Eyes Growing Role in South China Sea Security
Seventy years after its imperial forces were kicked out of the South China Sea, Japan is quietly moving back into the region, forging security ties with the Philippines and Vietnam as both Southeast Asian nations try to cope with China's territorial ambitions.
Tokyo's security cooperation is broad-based: It is supplying maritime patrol boats to the two countries while Japan will hold its first naval exercises with the Philippines in the coming months. Japanese military doctors are even advising Vietnamese submariners on how to deal with decompression sickness.
Japanese sources with knowledge of the assistance said Japan is providing this help, and more, in a calibrated escalation of involvement to avoid a backlash from Beijing.
Manila and Hanoi are the two capitals most at odds with Beijing over the South China Sea. Japan itself is embroiled in a bitter row with China over uninhabited islands in the East China Sea, further to the north.

Chinese Defence Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun, asked about the exercises, said that bilateral military cooperation between countries should benefit regional peace and security and not harm the interests of third parties.

BBC Documentary 2015 | 21st Century Warship | National Geographic Documentaries 2015

In early 2013 the vessel took part in the National Geographic TV show "21st Century Warship" along with USS Independence. The show premiered in the UK on the 10th of February 2013.
Freedom left for a 10 month deployment to Singapore in March 2013. On 11 March 2013, Freedom became the first LCS to reach Hawaii.[ On 16 March the ship's diesel engines, which have had years of problems, shut down in mid-ocean, leaving the ship adrift. On April 18, the Freedom arrived at the Changi Naval Base in Singapore, set to participate in joint military exercises.] On 18–19 May, Freedom participated in the Republic of Singapore Navy's Open House 2013 at Changi Naval Base. Visitors to the Open House were allowed to board and visit Freedom. On 21 May, Freedom 's first venture from Singapore harbor was cut short by yet another equipment breakdown,[ followed on 20 July 2013 by yet another breakdown requiring a return to port. The frequent breakdowns found the crew short of the Navy's sleep requirement, even with the maximum possible core crew and help from contractors and the mission module crew. Although billed as a trip for training and international cooperation exercises, Freedom conducted standard patrols while in the South China Sea. Despite suffering several breakdowns, the deployment was deemed a success from a research and development platform standpoint; while deployed for 10 months, the ship had 70 percent availability, on par with most other forward deployed ships in the fleet.
In November 2013, Freedom delivered relief supplies to the Philippines in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan from 16 nautical miles (30 km) off shore, using her own and another ship's helicopters.
From 25 April-16 May 2014, Freedom conducted the future concept of operations (CONOPS) for manned and unmanned helicopters aboard littoral combat ships. Operations had the manned MH-60R working together with the unmanned MQ-8B Fire Scout. The demonstration included one MH-60R and one MQ-8B flying with the surface warfare (SUW) mission package installed, intended to provide fleet protection against small boats and asymmetric threats.

China will work with foreign universities to research life in the deepest depths of the sea, with the help of a manned submersible the country is developing to dive up to 11,000 meters under water.
The Rainbowfish Hadal Life Science Research Center opened in Shanghai on Tuesday.
It has signed agreements to establish a lab with Britain's University of Aberdeen and another with Hawaii Pacific University in the U.S.
China began developing Rainbow Fish in 2014. It will be able to go much deeper than the Jiaolong submersible, which set a Chinese manned diving record when it reached 7,062 meters in the Mariana Trench in June 2012.
With a combined area larger than the United States, the world's 26 hadal trenches are home to many unknown species and bountiful energy and metal resources. Yet explorations at these depths have been held back by many difficulties including high pressures and low temperature.

Aqaba (العقبة al-ʿAqabah) is Jordan's only port city, located on the Gulf of Aqaba in the extreme south of the country.
Aqaba is Jordan's window on the Red Sea. Historically the same city as Eilat on the Israeli side of the border, plans for a shared international airport and other forms of cooperation have cooled down in the past few years during a period of political tension. Aqaba has seen a lot of development in the last few years. This has improved the infrastructure and facilities. Be prepared for road maps to be incorrect/out of date.

Except the sea and diving, Aqaba doesn't have a lot of things to offer. The following could be of interest but could easily be done in one day. The Fort and the museum are right next to each other.

With over 16 million people on an area of just 41,543km², it's a densely populated country with its gorgeous capital Amsterdam being just one of many interesting cities. Once a great naval power, this small nation boasts a wealth of cultural heritage and is famous for its painters, windmills, clogs and notoriously flat lands.
=====================

A. Establishment of national and regional networks of service providers and provision of knowledge and means to them to engage and run a hospitality business in rural areas;
B. Development of a brand new, boldly innovative regional touristic product (Single Cross-border Visitor package) and its marketing targeted to the right agents for it in the marketplace;
C. Facilitation of contacts at an inter-and intra- governmental level to advocate for marketing the developed regional touristic product, thus making the contacts between country-specific networks mutually beneficial.
