The Pitcairn Islands are a loosely grouped handful of tiny islands in the remote South Pacific, farther from any continent than any other inhabited island. The islands are the last British colony in the South Pacific and the most isolated British dependency, apart from Tristan da Cunha. The rugged main island was settled by the infamous mutineers of the HMS Bounty and their Polynesian companions, and most of Pitcairn's mere four dozen current inhabitants are their descendants. They are one of the least-populated entities given an ISO country code (PN).

The remains of the Bounty are in Bounty Bay. The ship was deliberately burned and sunk by the mutineers, and it's been well picked over by divers in the meantime, but there's still an allure to seeing (what little is left of) the vessel of the true tale that made "Captain Bligh" and "the Bounty" household names.
The Bounty's anchor is on display in front of the Public Hall in the town square, where the library/post office building, and the Adventist church can also be found.
The new museum in Adamstown contains artifacts from the Bounty (including Fletcher Christian's Bible), stamps, issues of National Geographic featuring the islands, and other items of local interest. One of the ship's four cannons is planned to be displayed here.
The island's school lies up in the western "suburbs" of Adamstown.
The grave of John Adams, the last surviving mutineer who first Christianised the community, the only one with a preserved grave.
Fletcher Christian's cave, past the school and further up, is where the lead mutineer is said to have watched for approaching ships and/or hid from his ruthless fellow settlers when necessary.
A Galapagos tortoise named Mrs. Turpin was left on the island in the early 20th century, and now lives in Tedside on the northwest shore of the island.
Taro Ground which is in the southern part of Pitcairn is the largest flat area on the island and site of the island's traditional link to the outside world: its ham radio station.
Flatland is a smaller plateau at the upper extent of Adamstown, with a tennis court, volleyball, and picnic facilities.
Garnet's Ridge, at 300 m one of the highest parts of a tall island, offers great views to both the west and east.
Highest Point is the... highest point on the island, at 337 m.
Down Rope, a cliff on the southeast edge of the island, has ancient Polynesian petroglyphs in its face and an isolated sandy beach at its base.
Gudgeon is a sea-level cave on the southwest side of the island, which hides a sandy beach in a large, wide space carved by the waves.

If the ocean is calm enough, go swimming in St. Paul's Pool, a picturesque tidal pool nestled among the seaside rocks in eastern part of Pitcairn. (Swimming in the ocean itself generally isn't safe due to the rocky shoreline.)
Sail yourself or perhaps travel with the locals to another of the islands. Oeno has sandy beaches suitable for swimming, Henderson offers rare opportunities for birdwatching and exploration of ancient caves (dwellings?), and both are good for snorkeling or scuba diving among coral reefs and a few shipwrecks. Ducie is over 300 miles away, out of range of the islanders' boats, and therefore rarely visited, but is also good for seeing rare birds.
Every year on January 23, "Bounty Day" is celebrated with a huge community dinner and the burning of a model of the Bounty.

The Mutiny on the Bounty was a mutiny aboard the British Royal Navy ship HMS Bounty on 28 April 1789. The mutiny was led by Fletcher Christian against their captain, Lieutenant William Bligh. According to accounts, the sailors were attracted to the "idyllic" life and sexual opportunities afforded on the Pacific island of Tahiti. It has also been argued that they were motivated by Bligh's allegedly harsh treatment of them.
Eighteen mutineers set Bligh afloat in a small boat with eighteen of the twenty-two crew loyal to him. To avoid detection and prevent desertion, the mutineers then variously settled on Pitcairn Island or on Tahiti and burned Bounty off Pitcairn.
In an extraordinary feat of seamanship, Bligh navigated the 23-foot (7 m) open launch on a 47-day voyage to Timor in the Dutch East Indies, equipped with a quadrant and pocket watch and without charts or compass. He recorded the distance as 3,618 nautical miles (6,701 km; 4,164 mi). He then returned to Britain and reported the mutiny to the Admiralty on 15 March 1790, 2 years and 11 weeks after his original departure.
The British government dispatched HMS Pandora to capture the mutineers, and Pandora reached Tahiti on 23 March 1791. Four of the men from Bounty came on board soon after her arrival, and ten more were arrested within a few weeks. These fourteen were imprisoned in a makeshift cell on Pandora's deck. Pandora ran aground on part of the Great Barrier Reef on 29 August 1791, with the loss of 31 of the crew and four of the prisoners. The surviving ten prisoners were eventually repatriated to England, tried in a naval court, with three hanged, four acquitted, and three pardoned.
Descendants of some of the mutineers and Tahitians still live on Pitcairn. The mutiny has been commemorated in books, films, and songs.
The story of the mutiny has been adapted numerous times to the page, the screen, and the stage.
Although William Bligh has frequently been portrayed as a middle-aged man in stage and screen productions about the Bounty, he was thirty-four years old at the time of the mutiny, having been born in 1754. Mary Russell Mitford wrote her poem "Christina, the Maid of the South Seas" in 1811, following the 1810 publication of Captain Mayhew Folger's rediscovery of Pitcairn. Pitcairn's Island: A New Melo Dramatic Ballet of Action, opened in Drury Lane in April 1816, following publication in the Naval Chronicle of an account of the 1814 visit to Pitcairn of Captain Sir Thomas Staines, of the Briton, and Captain Philip Pipon, of the Tagus. Lord Byron published his poem The Island in 1823. Sir John Barrow's book, The Eventful History of the Mutiny and Piratical Seizure of H.M.S. Bounty: Its Cause and Consequences (1831), ensured the enduring fame of the Bounty and her people. Mark Twain describes the mutiny as background to his story "The Great Revolution in Pitcairn" (1879). The Mutineers of the Bounty (original title Les révoltés de la Bounty, 1879) by Jules Verne, based on a work by Gabriel Marcel.[32] R. M. Ballantyne wrote a novel about the mutineers on the Bounty called The Lonely Island (1880). A first movie (The Mutiny of the Bounty, 1916) was made in Australia. A trilogy of novels, (Mutiny on the 'Bounty' (1932), Men Against the Sea, and Pitcairn's Island) by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall (also published in one volume as The Bounty Trilogy), as well as the movies and television shows based on them, relate fictionalized versions of the mutiny. The second film version was the Australian film In the Wake of the Bounty (1933), starring Errol Flynn as Fletcher Christian. The next movie was Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), which won the Oscar for Best Picture that year. It starred Charles Laughton as Bligh and Clark Gable as Christian. Another film version of the Mutiny on the Bounty (1962) stars Trevor Howard as Bligh and Marlon Brando as Christian. The 1962 motion picture is generally considered the least historically accurate, with such changes or errors as Christian and Bligh's meeting (and subsequently hating) each other at the first sailing of the Bounty, the mutiny's occurring in the middle of the day sparked by Bligh's order to let a sailor die of ingested saltwater poisoning rather than be given water set aside for the breadfruits, and Fletcher Christian's dying from injuries sustained in the fire aboard Bounty while trying to save the ship. Bengt Danielsson, a Kon-Tiki crew member, wrote What Happened on the Bounty in 1962.

Travel video about destination Rapa Nui in Chile.
Around 3,500 kilometres west of the mainland of Chile is the Pacific island of Rapa Nui, otherwise known as Easter Island. Three million years ago volcanic activity created this small island of lava that covers an area of a hundred and sixty square kilometres.Rapa Nui is one of the most remote places on Earth and its closest neighbour is Pitcairn Island more than two thousand kilometres west. Since its discovery by Dutch sailors on Easter Sunday, 1722, there has been a great deal of interest in the island. In spite of its growing tourist trade the island has retained an air of tranquillity and is ideal for nature lovers and those interested in its history. Theories abound as to who were the first settlers to arrive on this tiny island but scientists believe that its first inhabitants originated from Eastern Polynesia. But the island’s main focal point are its gigantic and mysterious stone monuments that date back to late pre-historic times. These mighty statues have always stimulated a certain amount of fantasy as the island was thought to be part of a lost continent. Nearly all the mighty figures, known as Moai, originated from the slopes of the Rano Raraku Volcano. Its Tuff stone was an ideal sculpting material and its soft texture made it possible for the islanders to create tall, massive statues out of the rock within only a few weeks. There are still almost four hundred individually crafted Moai figures on the island. During the 19th century slave traders arrived and took with them thousands of the island’s inhabitants. Those that were left of the island’s religious leaders took their knowledge of the island and its culture to their graves. Thus the exact meaning of the intriguing, giant Megalithic sculptures will remain an unsolved mystery for the rest of time.

Easter Island (Rapa Nui) is a Polynesian island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, at the southeasternmost point of the Polynesian Triangle. Easter Island is famous for its 887 extant monumental statues, called moai, created by the early Rapa Nui people. In 1995, UNESCO named Easter Island a World Heritage Site, with much of the island protected within Rapa Nui National Park.
Polynesian people settled on Easter Island in the first millennium CE, and created a thriving culture, as evidenced by the moai and other artifacts. However, human activity, the introduction of the Polynesian rat and overpopulation led to gradual deforestation and extinction of natural resources, which caused the demise of the Rapa Nui civilization. By the time of European arrival in 1722, the island's population had dropped to 2,000–3,000 from a high of approximately 15,000 just a century earlier. Diseases carried by European sailors and Peruvian slave raiding of the 1860s further reduced the Rapa Nui population, down to 111 in 1877.
Easter Island is one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world. The nearest inhabited land (50 residents) is Pitcairn Island 2,075 kilometres (1,289 mi) away, the nearest town with a population over 500 is Rikitea on island Mangareva 2,606 km (1,619 mi) away, and the nearest continental point lies in central Chile, 3,512 kilometres (2,182 mi) away.

==========================
The biggest tourist attractions on Easter Island are the Moai. The Moai are standing upon ceremonial platforms called Ahu.
Please note that the Moai and their platforms are protected by law and should not be approached under any circumstances. Do not walk on the Ahu. It would be an extremely disrespectful gesture and in case you damage the sites, even accidentally, the punishment is severe.
Rano Raraku and Orongo require entrance to the national park that can be bought at the airport upon arrival or, alternatively, at the CONAF office. The same entrance is valid in both locations so make sure you keep your ticket safe. The rest of the island can be visited without an entrance.
Ahus are mostly located along the coastline of the island. First time visitors may be struck by how many archaeological sites there are around the island, where you can be virtually alone depending the season and time of the day.
Each clan typically had an ahu even though not all of them had moais and thus while you drive around the south coast of the island every mile will contain sites where you will see ruins.
Two exceptional sites are the volcanic craters of Rano Kau and Rano Raraku. The slightly inland quarry at "Rano Raraku" is where the majority of moais were created, on a hillside. This 300 foot volcano remnant provided the stones for the great figures and is where a visitor can see various stages of the carving, as well as partially-finished figures scattered around. A climb to the left side of the crater, over the top, and into the bowl, is well worth it. Hiking to the opposite lip of the crater, where the most moai are found, is one of the most dramatic sites on the island.
Similarly, Rano Kau is the remains of a volcanic cinder cone, which like Rano Raraku, is filled with fresh rainwater and has a mottled unearthly appearance that is breathtaking.
Easter Island features two white sand beaches. Anakena, on the north side of the island, is an excellent shorebreak bodysurfing location with a bit of north swell. Even the 1 inch waves barrel (it's also possible to surf in the harbour at Hanga Roa and many of the locals do so). There's a small parking lot, a restroom/changing facility (costing $1 U.S.D.), several small BBQ joints with cold drinks, and a shaded picnic area.
The second beach is a hidden gem called Ovahe, not far from Anakena. This beautiful and desolate beach is surrounded by breathtaking cliffs. Note of caution: the path leading down to the beach is somewhat treacherous and unstable and best reached by foot - driving off-road (contrary to the misguided and somewhat callous actions of some tourists) on most of the island is illegal anyway.
One of the surprising facts is that occasionally a natural phenomenon, great waves, wash away all the sand from Ovahe that slowly returns along with waves. Last time this occurred was in 2012.
Some sources refer that you might sleep overnight in one of the caverns near Ovahe beach but that information is outdated since water now leaks in from the cracks above the cave. Additionally, entering areas without guidance when its dark might be a bad idea.

Fast facts and underwater footage explain and reveal the world’s largest protected marine reserve—home to dozens of rare and threatened sea creatures, including humpback and blue whales, green sea turtles, reef sharks, and more.
In March 2015 the U.K. government announced the Pitcairn Islands Marine Reserve in the southern Pacific Ocean. One of the remotest places in the world, the Pitcairn Islands will soon see more than 322,000 square miles (over 834,000 square kilometers) of their near pristine waters protected.
Why does it matter? Because large, highly protected marine reserves help counter global effects of overfishing, pollution, and development—and can make the planet more resilient to the consequences of climate change.

The fascinating underwater world that surrounds the legendary Cocos Island is a unique treasure. Its biodiversity and vast populations of marine life have turned it into a paradise for both divers and marine biologists alike. From the small harbour of Puntarenas the journey of the Undersea Hunter and its experienced crew travels more than five hundred kilometres in a southwesterly direction, far away from the economic problems of Costa Rica to an unspoiled and natural world, once the haunt of pirates. The journey from the mainland to the isolated and remote Cocos Island takes a little over thirty hours. In the underwater caves, rocky alcoves and ocean bed around Cocos Island there are huge numbers of Whitetip Sharks. Scientists and marine biologists such as Frenchman, Jacques Cousteau, and Austrian, Hans Hass, developed much interest in the island and travelled to this remote location in the South Pacific to document the beauty of this special place. The plant life beneath the water is like that of an enchanting garden. Both the surroundings of Cocos Island and its marine flora are protected as they form the basis of a unique habitat. Here it is rare to spot only a single fish, so diverse and full of life is the ocean close to the island that began to rise from the bottom of the Pacific around two and a half million years ago as a result of volcanic activity. Due to this exceptional habitat and its fantastic biodiversity it is no wonder that the waters of Cocos Island attract divers from all over the world. Nevertheless, the island and the sea creatures that inhabit its coastal waters have been spared mass tourism. Even though no one has discovered buried treasure each member of the expedition has been made richer by their many wonderful impressions of this wonderful island.

Tahiti is a world beyond all other island destinations. It’s a land of timeless beauty, azure lagoons, intoxicating aromas, pure, untouched beaches and ancient traditions. The legendary name “Tahiti” not only identifies the main island, but also describes the groups of islands that make up French Polynesia. These exotic locales lend themselves to a vacation that surpasses all other tropical escapes.
Moorea charms visitors with her emerald mountains and sandy shores; Bora Bora romances lovers with her gentle lagoons of unimaginable blue and turquoise; Huahine, Raiatea, and Taha’a captivate explorers with their lush vanilla plantations and ancient maraes; Rangiroa and the Tuamotu Atolls beckon divers with their untouched coral reefs and vibrant marine life; and the remote Marquesas Islands enchant adventurers with their rugged cliffs and soaring mountain peaks.
The first recorded settlers of the Marquesas were Polynesians, who, from archeological evidence, are believed to have arrived before 100 AD.However, a recent study using revised, high-precision radiocarbon dates pushes forward the date of Polynesian settlement to between 1200-1277 AD.Ethnological and linguistic evidence suggests that they likely arrived from the region of Tonga and Samoa.
The first Europeans to reach the Marquesas may have been the crew of San Lesmes, a Spanish vessel which disappeared in a storm while passing through the region as part of an expedition headed by García Jofre de Loaísa in June 1526. The islands were given their name by the Spanish explorer Álvaro de Mendaña who reached them seventy years later on 21 July 1595. He named them after his patron, García Hurtado de Mendoza, 5th Marquis of Cañete (Spanish: Marqués de Cañete) who was Viceroy of Peru at the time. Mendaña visited first Fatu Hiva and then Tahuata before continuing on to the Solomon Islands. They charted the four southernmost Marquesas as Magdalena (Fatu Hiva), Dominica (Hiva Oa), San Pedro (Moho Tani), and Santa Cristina (Tahuata).
The American maritime fur trader Joseph Ingraham first visited the northern Marquesas while commanding the brig Hope in 1791, giving them the name Washington Islands. In 1813, Commodore David Porter claimed Nuku Hiva for the United States, but the United States Congress never ratified that claim. In 1842, France—following a successful military operation on behalf of a native chief (named Iotete) who claimed he was king of the whole island of Tahuata—took possession of the whole group and established a settlement (abandoned in 1859) on Nuku Hiva. France reestablished control over the group in 1870, and later incorporated it into French Polynesia.
Of all major island groups in the Pacific, the Marquesas suffered the greatest population decline from diseases brought by Western explorers. Imported diseases reduced the eighteenth century population of over 78,000 inhabitants, to about 20,000 by the middle of the nineteenth century, and to just over 4,000 by the beginning of the 1900s. During the course of the twentieth century, the population increased to 8,548 at the November 2002 census,[9] not including the Marquesan community residing on Tahiti, and it has continued to increase since then, reaching 9,264 inhabitants at the August 2012 census.
The sparsely populated Marquesas Islands, located 1,371 km (852 mi) from Tahiti, the most populous island and dominant political center of French Polynesia, often feels neglected by politicians in Tahiti, and some favor a direct link with Paris instead of depending on Papeete. Several prominent Marquesan political leaders have repeatedly declared themselves in favor of separating from French Polynesia and remaining within the French Republic in case French Polynesian political leaders in Tahiti proclaim independence from France. This has generated controversies in Tahiti where pro-independence Tahitian leaders have accused the French central government of encouraging the separation of the Marquesas Islands from French Polynesia.
Below you will find extraordinary vacation packages to the islands of Tahiti, including romantic honeymoons and great island specials, plus descriptions of these exquisite islands, their hotels and their infamous overwater bungalows. Whether planning an unforgettable honeymoon, a special vacation or a spontaneous getaway, start your journey with Tahiti Legends .
The Marquesas Islands (/mɑːˈkeɪsæs/; French: Îles Marquises or Archipel des Marquises or Marquises; Marquesan: Te Henua (K)enana (North Marquesan) and Te Fenua `Enata (South Marquesan), both meaning "The Land of Men") are a group of volcanic islands in French Polynesia, an overseas collectivity of France in the southern Pacific Ocean. The Marquesas are located at 9° 00S, 139° 30W. The highest point is the peak of Mount Oave (French: Mont Oave) on Ua Pu island at 1,230 m (4,035 ft) above sea level.
