Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix (26 April 1798 – 13 August 1863) was a French Romantic artist regarded from the outset of his career as the leader of the French Romantic school. Delacroix's use of expressive brushstrokes and his study of the optical effects of colour profoundly shaped the work of the Impressionists, while his passion for the exotic inspired the artists of the Symbolist movement. A fine lithographer, Delacroix illustrated various works of William Shakespeare, the Scottish writer Walter Scott and the German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
In contrast to the Neoclassical perfectionism of his chief rival Ingres, Delacroix took for his inspiration the art of Rubens and painters of the Venetian Renaissance, with an attendant emphasis on colour and movement rather than clarity of outline and carefully modeled form. Dramatic and romantic content characterized the central themes of his maturity, and led him not to the classical models of Greek and Roman art, but to travel in North Africa, in search of the exotic. Friend and spiritual heir to Théodore Géricault, Delacroix was also inspired by Lord Byron, with whom he shared a strong identification with the "forces of the sublime", of nature in often violent action.

Eugène Delacroix est un peintre français, artiste majeur du Romantisme du XIXe siècle. Il naquit en 1798 et mourut en 1863. En 1822 Eugène connaît son premier grand succès et sa première exposition en salon avec "Dante et Virgile aux enfers". Le 5 décembre 1831, le Comte de Mornay invite Delacroix à l’accompagner lors d’une mission diplomatique au Maroc. Le départ de l’ambassade se fera le 1er janvier 1832, ils resteront six mois au Maroc. Des son arrivé a Tanger, Delacroix débute ses carnets de croquis dits " Carnets du Maroc". Un peu plus d’un mois après son arrivée au Maroc, Eugène assiste à une noce juive par l’intermédiaire d’amis. Cett -

Eugène Delacroix est un peintre français, artiste majeur du Romantisme du XIXe siècle. Il naquit en 1798 et mourut en 1863. En 1822 Eugène connaît son premier grand succès et sa première exposition en salon avec "Dante et Virgile aux enfers". Le 5 décembre 1831, le Comte de Mornay invite Delacroix à l’accompagner lors d’une mission diplomatique au Maroc. Le départ de l’ambassade se fera le 1er janvier 1832, ils resteront six mois au Maroc.
Des son arrivé a Tanger, Delacroix débute ses carnets de croquis dits " Carnets du Maroc". Un peu plus d’un mois après son arrivée au Maroc, Eugène assiste à une noce juive par l’intermédiaire d’amis. Cette noce lui inspira le tableau dont nous allons vous parler. Ce voyage fut le plus important et le plus long de sa vie. Après son retour en France, il continua de peindre et d’exposer, mais s’éteint a la suite d’une longue maladie le 13 août 1863.
La noce juive au Maroc fut peinte en 1841, Delacroix se basa donc sur sa mémoire ainsi que sur ses croquis. C’est une peinture à l’huile sur toile, ses dimensions sont : 104x104 cm. Cette œuvre est conservée au Musée du Louvre à Paris.
Ce tableau est une scène de genre, une scène de vie. C’est donc une peinture figurative. Des noces sont célébrées dans une famille Juive à Tanger. La scène se déroule dans la cour intérieure d’une maison. Des hommes, des femmes et des enfants se tiennent assis, le long des murs de la cour, ou debout jusque dans les escaliers ou les balcons. Ils discutent, se passent un plateau ou observent la femme qui danse devant les musiciens.
C’est un plan d’ensemble de la scène, avec une composition organisée par rapport à la perspective de la salle. Cette perspective est linéaire à un point de fuite, c’est à dire que les lignes obliques convergent toutes vers le même point : au dessus du musicien qui joue du luth. L’assemblée des personnages est organisée avec ceux de dos au premier plan, les personnages alignés contre les murs et ceux face à nous. La lumière vient du haut éclairant le mur blanc et se diffuse sur les personnages en s’atténuant selon leur éloignement. Les personnages très peu éclairés, comme ceux qui se tiennent dans les escaliers, ont des contours moins nets et des couleurs passées. L’éclairage doux et naturel appuie le coté intime de la scène, les couleurs sont chaudes, à part le vert des boiseries typiquement marocaines, dans une gamme des beiges, crèmes, marrons, rouges orangés, avec des touches de blanc. Les jeux d’ombre et de lumière sur les personnages renforcent l’intimité et donnent de la profondeur à la scène. Les différentes portes, fenêtres et ouvertures attisent notre curiosité, ce grand mur blanc vide souligne l’absence de la mariée.
Le voyage que Delacroix a effectué en Afrique du Nord, pour accompagner la mission diplomatique, est une étape essentielle de sa création. Il en rapporte de nombreux carnets de voyage, des croquis, des aquarelles et des notations, servant à mémoriser les scènes, les attitudes, les personnages pour composer ses futures toiles, dont ce mariage.
Delacroix produira plus de quatre-vingts peintures sur des thèmes orientaux, notamment Les Femmes d’Alger dans leur appartement (1834, musée du Louvre), La Noce juive au Maroc (1841, musée du Louvre), Le Sultan du Maroc (1845, musée des Augustins de Toulouse). Il popularisera l’Orientalisme. Les thèmes abordés dans cette peinture orientaliste sont assez variés, mais se réfère quasi-tous à la vision que les occidentaux ont de l’orient. Au XIXe siècle, siècle de Delacroix, on trouve surtout des scènes de harem, des scènes de chasses et de combats ou encore des représentations de paysages typiques comme les déserts, les oasis ou les villes orientales. Parmi les grands peintres orientalistes, on peut notamment cité Horace Vernet, Ingres, Théodore Chassériau, Jean-Léon Gérôme, Fromentin et bien sur Eugéne Delacroix.

The Raft of the Medusa (French: Le Radeau de la Méduse) is an oil painting of 1818--1819 by the French Romantic painter and lithographer Théodore Géricault (1791--1824). At 491 cm × 716 cm it is an over-life-size painting that depicts a moment from the aftermath of the wreck of the French naval frigate Méduse, which ran aground off the coast of today's Mauritania on July 5, 1816. In a mosaic technique work like «Vibrations florales» there is so much happening. How does one consolidate miniscule droplets of floral energy into such a complex solution of color? He is not revealing any secrets, any more than you would know if Pollock had a plan when he dripped all that paint, or if Vincent knew exactly where he was going when he produced the first star in Starry Night. No one can say for sure, but what Carson does share with the aforementioned artists is total devotion to painting.

The Raft of the Medusa (French: Le Radeau de la Méduse) is an oil painting of 1818--1819 by the French Romantic painter and lithographer Théodore Géricault (1791--1824).
Completed when the artist was just 27, the work has become an icon of French Romanticism. At 491 cm × 716 cm it is an over-life-size painting that depicts a moment from the aftermath of the wreck of the French naval frigate Méduse, which ran aground off the coast of today's Mauritania on July 5, 1816.
Although the Méduse was carrying 400 people, including 160 crew, there was space for only about 250 in the boats. The remainder of the ship's complement—at least 146 men and one woman—were piled onto a hastily-built raft, that partially submerged once it was loaded.
Seventeen crew members opted to stay aboard the grounded Méduse. The captain and crew aboard the other boats intended to tow the raft, but after only a few miles the raft was turned loose.For sustenance the crew of the raft had only a bag of ship's biscuit (consumed on the first day), two casks of water (lost overboard during fighting) and a few casks of wine.At least 147 people were set adrift on a hurriedly constructed raft; all but 15 died in the 13 days before their rescue, and those who survived endured starvation, dehydration, cannibalism and madness.
The event fascinated the young artist, and before he began work on the final painting, he undertook extensive research and produced many preparatory sketches.
He interviewed two of the survivors, and constructed a detailed scale model of the raft. His efforts took him to morgues and hospitals where he could view, first-hand, the colour and texture of the flesh of the dying and dead.
As the artist had anticipated, the painting proved highly controversial at its first appearance in the 1819 Paris Salon, attracting passionate praise and condemnation in equal measure. However, it established his international reputation, and today is widely seen as seminal in the early history of the Romantic movement in French painting.
Although The Raft of the Medusa retains elements of the traditions of history painting, in both its choice of subject matter and its dramatic presentation, it represents a break from the calm and order of the then-prevailing Neoclassical school. Géricault's work attracted wide attention almost immediately from its first showing, and was subsequently exhibited in London. It was acquired by the Louvre soon after the artist's early death at the age of 32. The painting's influence can be seen in the works of Eugène Delacroix, J. M. W. Turner, Gustave Courbet and Édouard Manet.
He used friends as models, most notably the painter Eugène Delacroix (1798--1863), who modelled for the figure in the foreground with face turned downward and one arm outstretched.
Two of the raft's survivors are seen in shadow at the foot of the mast; three of the figures were painted from life—Corréard, Savigny and Lavillette. Jamar posed nude for the dead youth shown in the foreground about to slip into the sea, and was also the model for two other figures.
According to Hubert Wellington, Delacroix—who would become the standard-bearer of French Romanticism after Géricault's death—wrote, "Géricault allowed me to see his Raft of Medusa while he was still working on it. It made so tremendous an impression on me that when I came out of the studio I started running like a madman and did not stop till I reached my own room" .
