Although the Inca were the largest pre-Colombian American empire, they lacked a written language
For this reason (lack of census records) estimates of their size has varied ranging from 4 million people to nearly 40 million
The Incas practiced something known as skull deformation. Basically they wrapped cloth around the heads of their kids so that they would elongate.
Some of their kings would only wear their clothes once and then burn them
In spite of the fact that they built over 30,000 km of road, they never developed or discovered the wheel
Mail was delivered along this network of roads by way of messengers who would hand mail off to each other using a sort of relay system
Since there was no writing system the messengers had to memorize the messages!
The Incas introduced the world to potatoes via the Spanish conquistadors
In fact, nearly a quarter of Europe's growth between the 1700s and the 1900s was attributed to the introduction of this crop
The Incas constructed buildings without mortar. Basically the huge stones they used fit together so perfectly and tightly that nothing could get between them.

A look at the Ancient Civilizations of the Inca and Maya Empires. Discover the gems of the 15th Century Incan empire, a domain which covered much of South America. The splendid cities of Curzo and Chairana and the grandeur of Machu Picchu captivated the imagination and, unfortunately, greed of the Spanish conquistadors. Lifelike virtual construction gives us a close look at the massive sacred grounds of the Temple of the Sun at Cuzco, religious and political capital of a world known to generations of European adventurers as El Dorado.
Part starts at 26:33 and looks at the Mayan Empire. Between the 3rd and 10th centuries A.D., the Mayan civilization ruled much of Central America. Travel back to the magnificent Mayan cities of Uxmal, Tulum, Chichén Itza and the capital Palenque, with its breathtaking pyramid built by master mathematicians. Being that it is located on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, it is, to this day, one of the most picturesque places in the world.
Ancient Civilizations offers a comparative analysis of the field, including both old world and new civilizations, and explores the connections between all civilizations around the earth. The volume provides a jargon-free introduction to ancient civilizations from the first civilizations, and the great powers in the Near East, to the first Aegean civilizations, the Mediterranean world in the first millennium, Imperial Rome, northeast Africa, divine kings in southeast Asia, and empires in East Asia, as well as early states in the Americas and Andean civilization. For those interested in ancient civilizations.
Today’s civilizations owe an immense debt to the powerful empires and mighty cities of antiquity. Their inventions, techniques and concepts enabled the advancement of humankind and lay the foundation for life in the modern world.

hrough a mix of crime-lab science, archeology, and history, this documentary presents new evidence that is changing what we know about the final days of the once-mighty Inca Empire. This probing story of archeological discovery begins in a cemetery crammed with skeletons that offer tantalizing clues about a fierce 16th-century battle between warriors of the collapsing Inca Empire and Spanish invaders. Now, the long-accepted account of a swift Spanish conquest of the Inca—achieved with guns, steel, and horses—is being replaced by a more complete story based on surprising new evidence, including what may be the first gunshot wound in the Americas.
The largest empire in pre-Columbian America, the Inca ruled the most advanced civilization in the New World. By the time the Spanish arrived, the Inca had built the breathtaking city of Machu Picchu, pioneered a sophisticated system of high-altitude highways, and forged luxurious treasures of gold. So how could a tiny Spanish army of gold-seeking adventurers bring the powerful Inca Empire, home to over 10 million people, so quickly to its knees?
According to traditional historical accounts, Francisco Pizarro and his band of fewer than 200 Spanish conquistadors, in search of treasure and power, vanquished the Inca emperor and his army in a bloody ambush in 1532. It was said that the Inca, overwhelmed by the Spaniards' horses and weapons, and vulnerable to the infectious diseases they carried, quickly succumbed and surrendered.
But the latest archeological findings and historical analysis from leading experts, like archeologist Guillermo Cock and ethnohistorian Maria Rostworowski, both Peruvians, support a different version of the story, one that historians have long suspected. Their field research, forensic science, and recently discovered documents suggest that it took the Spanish years, as well as the formation of military alliances with thousands of Indian mercenaries, to defeat the Inca Empire.
This documentary delves into the intriguing process of how science is helping to rewrite the history of the Spanish conquest. The story begins in Puruchuco, an Inca cemetery uncovered in the modern suburbs of Lima, where Guillermo Cock and his team of archeologists have found a strange group of more than 70 skeletons unlike any unearthed there before. Hastily buried in shallow graves, many of the corpses are shockingly mutilated, their bones crushed and marked with deep cuts, suggestive of battle injuries (see Grave Analysis). For Cock, these grim remains were an exhilarating find, providing fresh insight into the Incas' demise.
To confirm suspicions about how these warriors buried in Puruchuco had been killed, Cock approached forensic scientists at the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science at the University of New Haven. One head wound was a perfectly round hole. Along its inner rim the forensic team identified fragments of iron, strongly suggesting that the hole was a bullet wound from a Spanish arquebus, a primitive but deadly gun. If true, it would be the first documented gunshot wound in the New World.
Combining these latest developments with newly explored 16th-century historical records, the film recreates an untold final chapter of the conquest. What emerges is a never-before-told account of a protracted and intensely brutal war in which the weakened Inca were forced to battle not only a small core of well-armed conquistadors but also a far larger supporting army of Indians who were key to turning the

In the first of a two-part series, Dr Jago Cooper reassesses the achievements of the Inca Empire. He begins in Peru, where evidence is still being uncovered that challenges preconceptions about its origins and significance. Venturing from the coast to the clouds, he reveals how the Inca transformed one of the most challenging landscapes in the world to ward off the worst effects of the climate, and created sophisticated systems of communication. He shows how one of many independent societies became a commanding empire - not through force, but by using subtle methods of persuasion.

Ancient Technology: we will take an in depth look at the anomalies found at the sites, and show that at least one highly advanced technological civilization preceded the Inca. We will compare this with evidence for a highly sophisticated civilization in Egypt, existing prior to the Dynastic Egyptians. The Inca did have advanced metallurgy, but mostly used it to develop tools, jewelry and ornaments. Although the Inca did have weapons of bronze and hardened alloys, most of the Inca weaponry were made of wood and stone that were used for hand to hand combat and/or to capture people rather than kill and conquer. The Inca were in the middle of political problems when the Spanish arrived with the spread of disease put the Inca State at a extreme disadvantage, nether the less, the Inca did go toe to toe with the Spanish in many military battles. The Spanish used all kinds of backstabbing, killing women and children and destroying inter-trade, but the biggest weapon the Spanish had was disease which caused the Inca population of 20 million to drop to a few million.
The social structure of the Inca Empire varied from area to area, but still had the same basic structure, On top was the Sapa Inca, or the emperor. Then came the nobles, these were often the priests and relatives of past emperors or the current ones. After, there were craftsmen and architects, they were very high on the social ladder because of the skill that they had was required by the Empire for such buildings. then came the working class, farmers and laborers that were kept in their social groupings (Some were slaves)
The Inca Empire was a federalist system which consisted of a central government with the Inca at its head and four quarters, or suyu: Chinchay Suyu (NW), Anti Suyu (NE), Kunti Suyu (SW), and Qulla Suyu (SE). The four corners of these quarters met at the center, Cusco. These suyu were likely created around 1460 during the reign of Pachacuti before the empire assumed it largest territorial extent. It is probably the case that at the time the suyu were established they were roughly of equal size and only later changing their proportions as the empire expanded north and south along the Andes.
The Inca state had no separate judiciary or codified set of laws. While customs, expectations, and traditional local power holders did much in the way of governing behavior, the state, too, had legal force, such as through tokoyrikoq (lit. "he who sees all"), or inspectors. The highest such inspector, typically a blood relation to the Sapa Inca, acted independently of the conventional hierarchy, providing a point of view for the Sapa Inca free of bureaucratic influence

Seeking land ownership, Japanese farmers began emigrating to Peru in 1899 when the two countries established diplomatic ties. With the intent of recreating Japanese dishes using local ingredients, Nikkei (Japanese descendants abroad) informally created Nikkei cuisine, a fusion popularized worldwide by Nobu Matsuhisa's empire. MUNCHIES flew to the Land of the Incas to interview three very different local and proud Nikkei chefs: Mitsuharu Tsumura (of Maido, a top 15 restaurant in all of Latin America), Toshiro Konishi (of Toshiro's, a favorite amongst Lima's Elite) and Toshi Matsufuji (of Al Toke Pez, a delicious hole-in-the-wall in one of Lima's working-class neighborhoods). Our skilled chefs took time from preparing entrées like ceviche with ponzu, dashi, and tempura seaweed to explain why the flavors of the far-flung nations pair so well.
