The Denmark Strait or Greenland Strait (Danish: Danmarksstrædet, Icelandic: Grænlandssund, the latter meaning GreenlandSound) is an oceanic strait between Greenland (to its northwest) and Iceland (to its southeast). The Norwegian island of Jan Mayen lies northeast of the strait.
It connects the Greenland Sea, an extension of the Arctic Ocean, to the Irminger Sea, a part of the Atlantic Ocean, and is 300 miles (480 km) long and 180 miles (290 km) miles wide at its narrowest, from Straumnes, the northwestern headland of the north west Icelandicpeninsula of Hornstrandir, und Cape Tupinier on Blosseville Coast in East Greenland). The official IHO delineation between the Arctic and the North Atlantic Oceans, however, runs from Straumness to Cape Nansen, which is 132 km (82 miles) southwest of Cape Tunipier. From Straumnes to Cape Nansen the distance is 336 km (209 miles).
The narrow depth, where the Greenland-Iceland Rise runs on the bottom of the sea, is 625 feet (191 m). The cold East Greenland Current passes through the strait and carries icebergs south into the north Atlantic Ocean. It hosts important fishing grounds.
Denmark is the southernmost of the Nordic countries, located southwest of Sweden and south of Norway, and bordered to the south by Germany. The country consists of a large peninsula, Jutland and many islands, most notably Zealand, Funen, Lolland, Falster and Bornholm, as well as hundreds of minor islands often referred to as the Danish Archipelago.

The last battle of the German battleship Bismarck took place in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 300 nmi (350 mi; 560 km) west of Brest, France, on 26–27 May 1941. Although it was a decisive action between capital ships, it has no generally accepted name.
The battle was a sequel to the Battle of the Denmark Strait, fought on 24 May 1941, in which Bismarck and her consort the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen had sunk the prestigious British battlecruiser HMS Hood and damaged the battleship Prince of Wales, forcing her to withdraw. Following that battle Bismarck was pursued for more than two days by ships and aircraft of the Royal Navy and Royal Air

The next year she went down to Gibraltar and Spain and in 1922 visited Brazil and the West Indies. After a brief call on Denmark and Norway in 1923, Hood was flagship on a eleven-month cruise around the World, accompanied by the smaller battlecruiser Repulse and a number of light cruisers. In 1925, she called on Lisbon to help commemorate Portugal's contributions to navigation and exploration.
For ten years after 1925, Hood was assigned to the Royal Navy's Home and Atlantic Fleets, operating primarily around Europe, with a visit to the West Indies in 1932. She served with the Mediterranean Fleet in 1936-39, protecting British interests during the Spanish Civil War. Back with the Home Fleet after mid-1939, Hood operated in the North Atlantic and North Sea through the first part of World War II and received minor damage in a German air attack on 26 September 1939, an event that demonstrated the relative ineffectiveness of contemporary anti-aircraft gunfire. In June and July 1940, the battlecruiser was in the Mediterranean area. She was flagship during the 3 July Mers-el-Kebir battle, the most dramatic and destructive of several incidents in which the British Navy seized, interned, destroyed or attempted to destroy the warships of their recent ally, France. These acts were undertaken on Government orders to allay fears that the French Navy might fall into German hands.
Hood spent the remainder of her service operating from Scapa Flow, covering the North Sea and Atlantic from the threat of German surface raiders. She was now elderly, overloaded, and burdened with an inadequate armoring arrangement. However, her great operational value had acted through the 1930s to prevent the Royal Navy from taking her out of service for a badly-needed modernization, and now it was too late. In May 1941, in company with the new battleship Prince of Wales, she was sent out to search for the German battleship Bismarck, which had left Norway for the Atlantic. On the morning of 24 May, the two British capital ships found the enemy to the west of Iceland. In the resulting Battle of the Denmark Strait, one or more of Bismarck's fifteen-inch shells got into Hood's after magazines. They erupted in a massive explosion. The great ship sank in moments with all but three of her large crew, an event that shocked the Royal Navy, the British nation and the entire World. HMS Hood's remains were located and photographed by a British deep sea expedition in July 2001.
This page features selected views of the British battlecruiser Hood.

Copenhagen Travel Guide - Copenhagen (Danish: København) is the capital city of Denmark and forms the moderate conurbation that one million Danes call home. This "friendly old girl of a town" is big enough to form a small Danish 'metropolis', with shopping, culture and nightlife par excellence, yet small enough still to feel intimate and be safe. Although mixed in its urban scene, the city is easy to navigate. Overlooking the Øresund Strait, with neighbouring Sweden just minutes away, Copenhagen serves as a cultural and geographic link between mainland Europe and Scandinavia. Copenhagen is where old fairy tales blend with flashy new architect

The Öresund is the shortest sea route between the North and the Baltic Seas. For centuries it was a bone of contention for many maritime nations. But not all ships can sail through it, because the shipping channel is only eight metres deep in some places. This means that heavy commercial ships and fully laden tankers have to navigate the twists and turns of the Grea

Danish Design is a style of functionalistic design and architecture that was developed in mid-20th century. Influenced by the German Bauhaus school, many Danish designers used the new industrial technologies, combined with ideas of simplicity and functionalism to design buildings, furniture and household objects, many of which have become iconic and are still in use and production.

When it opened in July 2000, the Øresund Bridge that links Denmark and Sweden had to meet several requirements: the bridge had to provide access for both road and rail travel across the Øresund Strait without interfering with airplane traffic at the nearby Copenhagen Airport, while also allowing ship traffic to flow through the strait uninterrupted.
The answer? A kind of hybrid between a bridge and a tunnel, with a man-made artificial island that connects the two. Today it's the longest combination road and rail bridge anywhere in Europe, and allows travelers to pass between the two countries usua

Copenhagen is where old fairy tales blend with flashy new architecture and world-class design; where warm jazz mixes with crisp electronica from Copenhagen's basements. You could feel you've seen all of Copenhagen in one day, but further exploration will have you discovering more for months.

Great documentary film from 1930s that shows how the bridge was built, piece by piece, girder by girder across the Golden Gate. Stock footage of completed bridge; informative narration; explanative illustrations illuminate bridges dimensions and other structural aspects of design.

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate strait, the mile-wide, three-mile-long channel between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The structure links the U.S. city of San Francisco, on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, to Marin County, bridging both U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1 across the strait. The bridge is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco, California, and the United States. It has been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The Frommers travel guide considers the Golden Gate Bridge "possibly the most beautiful, certainly the most photographed, bridge in the world". It opened in 1937 and was, until 1964, the longest suspension bridge main spanin the world, at 4,200 feet (1,300 m).
Before the bridge was built, the only practical short route between San Francisco and what is now Marin County was by boat across a section of San Francisco Bay. Ferry service began as early as 1820, with regularly scheduled service beginning in the 1840s for purposes of transporting water to San Francisco.
Building of the Golden Gate Bridge:
Many experts said that a bridge could not be built across the 6,700 ft (2,042 m) strait, which had strong, swirling tides and currents, with water 372 ft (113 m) deep at the center of the channel, and frequent strong winds. Experts said that ferocious winds and blinding fogs would prevent construction and operation.
The construction began on January 5, 1933. The project cost more than $35 million, completing ahead of schedule and under budget. The Golden Gate Bridge construction project was carried out by the McClintic-Marshall Construction Co., a subsidiary of Bethlehem Steel Corporation. The chief engineer in charge of overall design and construction of the bridge project was Joseph Strauss. However, because he had little understanding or experience with cable-suspension designs, responsibility for much of the engineering and architecture fell on other experts. The project was finished and the bridge was opened on May 27, 1937.
Specifications:
Until 1964, the Golden Gate Bridge had the longest suspension bridge main span in the world, at 4,200 feet (1,300 m). Since 1964 its main span length has been surpassed by ten bridges; it now has the second-longest main span in the United States, after the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York City. Total length of the Golden Gate Bridge from abutment to abutment is 8,981 feet (2,737 m). The Golden Gate Bridge's clearance above high water averages 220 feet (67 m) while its towers, at 746 feet (227 m) above the water, were the world's tallest on a suspension bridge until 1998 when bridges in Denmark and Japan were completed.
Structure:
The weight of the roadway is hung from two cables that pass through the two main towers and are fixed in concrete at each end. Each cable is made of 27,572 strands of wire. There are 80,000 miles (130,000 km) of wire in the main cables. The bridge has approximately 1,200,000 total rivets.

The Öresund is the shortest sea route between the North and the Baltic Seas. For centuries it was a bone of contention for many maritime nations. But not all ships can sail through it, because the shipping channel is only eight metres deep in some places. This means that heavy commercial ships and fully laden tankers have to navigate the twists and turns of the Great Belt. Denmark and Sweden have been connected by the Oresund Bridge for ten years. The result is that Copenhagen and Malmö have almost merged.

13 Awesome Attractions in Denmark according to Lonely Planet
13. Danish Design
12. Viking History
The Vikings ensured that the Danes were known and feared throughout northern Europe from the 8th to 11th centuries, but battle and bloodlust is far from the whole story. Getting a feel for the Viking era is easy, whether visiting the ship-burial ground of Ladby or the Viking forts of Zealand.
11. Ribe
Though Ribe is a small town - there is much to experience. Ribe is the oldest town in Denmark and the closest neighbour to marshland and the Wadden Sea. In Ribe you can stroll around in cobblestoned streets with half-timbered houses an enjoy the atmosphere, the cosy cafés and the speciality shops.
10. Bog Bodies
Relics and monuments from Denmark's illustrious past abound. Two stars of the early Iron Age are the intact bodies of the Tollund Manand the Grauballe Man, who lived around 300 BC and were exhumed from Denmark's peat bogs after their two-millennia-long slumber. Their discoveries bring us tantalisingly close to ancient societies.
9. Skagen
Skagen s the northernmost town in Denmark, with the northernmost point in Denmark, Grenen. This is where Kattegat (waters between Denmark and Sweden) and the Skagerrak (part of the North Sea) meet. It is a town where the main turnover are the fishing fleet and the connected industries - food industries and different industries supporting the fleet. Second income is tourism.
8. Kronborg Castle
Originally build by King Eric of Pomerania in the 1420s at the narrowest point of the Øresund strait. It was opened to the public in 1935 following nearly 10 years of renovations. In 2000 Kronborg was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, citing Kronborg as "an outstanding example of the Renaissance castle, and one which played a highly significant role in the history of northern Europe."
7. Sailing & Windsurfing
Denmark's long and varied coastline and abundance of islands, big and small, are made for exploration by sail. The mixture of lakes, placid fjords and calm inshore areas, combined with excellent marinas at old fishing ports, make Denmark a prime sailing destination.
6. Copenhagen Jazz Festival
Copenhagen Jazz Festival is an annual Jazz event, taking place in Copenhagen each July. Copenhagen Jazz Festival was established as a festival in 1979, but already from 1964 Tivoli Gardens presented a series of concerts under the name Copenhagen Jazz Festival with Thelonius Monk, Miles Davis and many others.
5. Legoland
Legoland Billund, the original Legoland park, opened on June 7, 1968 in Billund. The park is located next to the original Lego factory and Denmark's second busiest airport Billund Airport. Legoland is the largest tourist attraction in Denmark outside of Copenhagen.
4. Bornholm
Bornholm is Denmark's crown jewel. 'The Pearl of the Baltic' has sandy beaches on the south of the island which are renowned for their Mediterranean light and feel. Its forests impart a more rugged feel than found elsewhere in densely-populated Denmark.
3. Cycling
Is Denmark the best nation for bicycle touring in the world? Probably, thanks to its extensive national network of cycle routes, terrain that is either flat or merely undulating, and a culture strongly committed to two wheels.
2. New Nordic Cuisine
The New Danish Cuisine is a component of the New Nordic Cuisine which has been developed since 2004 in an attempt to promote natural produce as a basis for new dishes both in restaurants and in the home. As a result, a number of Denmark's restaurants have introduced new ingredients combined with traditional foods prepared in new ways.
1. Copenhagen
Copenhagen is the capital city of Denmark and forms the moderate conurbation that one million Danes call home. This "friendly old girl of a town" is big enough to form a small Danish 'metropolis', with shopping, culture and nightlife par excellence, yet small enough still to feel intimate and be safe. Although mixed in its urban scene, the city is easy to navigate.

13. Danish Design

WHAT TO DO IN SWEDEN
1. Stockholm Archipelago
If you do not get out of the city of Stockholm and see some of the Archipelago you are really missing out. I visited Dalarö, it is a quaint little village that is pretty easy to get to. I headed out there, had a walk around and found somewhere to eat and just took in all the atmosphere. You can take a train and then a bus. I got a day ticket for $115Kr.
2. Stockholm Underground System
The Stockholm subway system is said to be the world's longest art exhibit - 110 kilometers long.Traveling by subway is like traveling through an exciting story that extends from the artistic pioneers of the 1950s to the art experiments of today.Over 90 of the 100 subway stations in Stockholm have been decorated with sculptures, mosaics, paintings, installations, engravings and reliefs by over 150 artists. The Kungsträdgården subway station looks like an archaeological excavation, with the remains of the old Stockholm Makalös palace. At Östermalmstorg the artist Siri Derkert highlights women's rights and peace and environmental issues.
3. Gamla Stan (Old Town)
Gamla Stan, the Old Town, is one of the largest and best preserved medieval city centers in Europe, and one of the foremost attractions in Stockholm. This is where Stockholm was founded in 1252.All of Gamla Stan and the adjacent island of Riddarholmen are like a living pedestrian-friendly museum full of sights, attractions, restaurants, cafés, bars and places to shop. Gamla Stan is also popular with aficionados of handicrafts, curios and souvenirs. The narrow winding cobblestone streets, with their buildings in so many different shades of gold, give Gamla Stan its unique character. Even now cellar vaults and frescoes from the Middle Ages can be found behind the visible facades, and on snowy winter days the district feels like something from a story book.
4. Photo With a Supermodel
Yeah.... The model's name is Alexandra Friberg and was crowned Ms Universe Sweden 2013.
5. Go Off Track
Swedes, and Stockholmers in particular, love their coffee. In order to really experience the life of the locals, you need to find the places where Swedish dads hang out during their parental leave to enjoy a fresh brew; where quintessential hipsters go to get their inspiration; and where relaxing is taken more seriously than anywhere else in the world. This guide will help you find the more off-neat places you need to visit in order to become a real Stockholmer!
6. Help a Ted X Speaker

7. Southern Archipelago (Gothenburg)
The really great thing about the southern Goteborg Archipelago is that you can get there cheap without car! The tram goes all the way to where the boats take off, and for the same ticket (and fee) you carry on by boat to one of the islands. Vargo is an hour away, and the boat ride itself is a treat. On Brännö and Styrsö you can have a meal, but the most genuine way to experience the archipelago is to bring your own picnic and stay out all day.
8. Ride a Bike
Scandinavians love bikes, bikes love Scandinavia.
9. Try Fika
Asking someone to fika with you is a way of meeting informally, without pressures. While every konditori (pastry shop) will offer a full range of treats to choose from, during a fika the sweet bun or “bulle” reigns supreme. There are cardamom buns, vanilla buns, pistachio-filled buns and some cafes have developed their own special recipes, like Vetekatten in Stockholm where they created a mjölnargårdsbulle containing a buttery steamed custard.
10. Don't Miss the Ferry!!
There are only two ferries daily that leave the Island, miss one and you're stuck there for the rest of the day.
11. Street Party! - Gothenburg
The Gothenburg Culture Festival is one giant street party attracting some 700,000 festival-goers to its downtown party area – and is all for free. Expect live music, dance, design/fashion, film, street artists, handicraft, history, comedy, poetry and theatre. Phew. This 6-day party takes place in August and Gothenburg wants you to come.
14. Appreciate Street Artists
They play day in day out, through rain through shine, for your free entertainment - spare them some change! BUT don't get scammed by the fake artists though (normally two middle-aged men playing violin and cello.
15. Swedish Fine Dining
Save up enough money to indulge for a signature Swedish beer with a beautiful seafood scampi and mushroom risotto.
16. Øresund Bridge
The Øresund Bridge is a 16 km direct link between Denmark and Sweden.Øreund Bridge opened in 2000 and since then thousands of cars and trains have crossed the strait between Denmark and Sweden. The bridge consists of both a bridge, a tunnel and the artificial island Peberholmen. Combined it adds up to a total length of 15.9 km.

Today it's the longest combination road and rail bridge anywhere in Europe, and allows travelers to pass between the two countries usually without passport inspections.

The wonderful colours of northern jutland, Denmark.
00:00 Skagen Odde (or Skagens Odde) sometimes known in English as the Scaw Spit, is a sandy peninsula which stretches some 30 km northeast and comprise the northmost area of Vendsyssel in Jutland, Denmark.
Skagen Odde is one of the largest spit systems in Europe, created by a continuous process of marine sand and gravel deposition, moved in a north-east direction by longshore currents. The width of the spit varies from 3 to 7 km.
02:24 Grenen is a long sandbar at Skagen Odde (the headland of Jutland), north of the town of Skagen.
Grenen is the junction point between the strait of Skagerrak (part of North Sea) and the Kattegat sea and the powerful turbulence of the colliding seas, have created a 4 km long curved sandbar above and below the waves stretching east. The reef is still active and have grown about 1 km northeast towards Sweden over the last century, resulting in a mean annual growthrate of about 10 m. The currents and turbulence are very strong and it is prohibited and can be fatal, to take a swim in the waters around Grenen.
03:04 The Sand-Covered Church (Danish: Den Tilsandede Kirke, also translated as The Buried Church, and also known as Old Skagen Church) is the name given to a late 14th-century church dedicated to Saint Lawrence of Rome. It was a brick church of considerable size, located 2 kilometres southwest of the town centre of Skagen. During the last half of the 18th century the church was partially buried by sand from nearby dunes; the congregation had to dig out the entrance each time a service was to be held. The struggle to keep the church free of sand lasted until 1795, when it was abandoned.
03:44 Råbjerg Mile is a migrating coastal dune between Skagen and Frederikshavn. It is the largest moving dune in Northern Europe with an area of around 1 km² and a height of 40 m. The dune contains a total of 4 million m³ of sand. The wind moves it in a north-easterly direction up to 18 m a year. The dune leaves a low, moist layer of sand behind it, trailing back westwards towards Skagerrak, where the Mile originally formed more than 300 years ago.

Golden Gate Bridge - California - U.S.A.
It opened in 1937 and was, until 1964, the longest suspension bridge main span in the world, at 4,200 feet.
The bridge is popular with pedestrians and bicyclists, and was built with walkways on either side of the six vehicle traffic lanes. Initially, they were separated from the traffic lanes by only a metal curb, but railings between the walkways and the traffic lanes were added in 2003, primarily as a measure to prevent bicyclists from falling into the roadway.
A visitor center and gift shop, dubbed the "Bridge Pavilion", is located on the San Francisco side of the bridge, adjacent to the southeast parking lot. It opened in 2012, in time for the bridge's 75th anniversary celebration. A cafe, outdoor exhibits, and restroom facilities are located nearby.

HMS Hood, a 42,100-ton battlecruiser built at Clydebank, Scotland, was completed in March 1920. For more than two decades, she was the World's largest warship and, with her long, low hull and finely balanced silhouette, was to many the embodiment of "big-gun" era seapower. During her travels in European waters and far away, Hood actively represented Great Britain throughout her career. Her first cruise, in 1920, was to Scandanavia.

The strait you can cross without getting your feet wet / Copenhagen, the Venice of the North / Two countries, two currencies, but only one shipping authority / The pilot who guides Russian tankers and Danish royal yachts through the sound / Lighthouse keepers in «No Man's Water».

Today it's the longest combination road and rail bridge anywhere in Europe, and allows travelers to pass between the two countries usually without passport inspections.
