When asked about the Wharton Effect, most Wharton alumni look at their careers and point to connections made and positions earned in part thanks to the Wharton network. However, Gerardo Hamilton WG80, director of sales at MX Promo, sees the Wharton Effect when he looks at his two children and his wife. Originally from Mexico City, Hamilton came to Wharton in Philadelphia in 1978. During his second semester as an MBA student at the Wharton School, he was invited to a party in Manhattan with a group of stockbrokers. There, he met “a beautiful young lady” who later became his wife and the mother of his two children.

Jacob Kaplan-Moss: The Talent Myth at The Wharton School.
Jacob Kaplan-Moss is known for his work on Django, but, as he would describe in his PyCon 2015 keynote, many think he had more to do with its creation than he actually did. The theme of that keynote was something that software development organizations—and open source projects—may be grappling with: a myth about developer performance and how it impacts the industry.
Jacob drew on his early experience with Django, his own accomplishments as a long distance runner, and talent acquisition and retention challenges that he’s observed throughout his career, to illustrate how the talent myth sets an "impossibly high bar for entry". The fact that an

UR2014 Ignites - Thinking fast and slow - Why catastrophe risks lead us to behave differently
Session Lead and Ignite Presenter: Dr. Howard Kunreuther, Co-Director, Wharton Risk Management and Decision Processes Center, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania
Abstract: Building on 30 years of experience in risk perception and behavioral economics, this session explores how we make choices in the context of low-probability/high-consequence events. We make decisions differently in this uncertain disaster environment than we do in our day-to-day activities. For example, we often fail to invest in protective measures, until after catastrophic losses occur, as a result of relying on oversimplified decision rules and misperceiving the risk. We will explore these behavioral biases and ways to overcome them – in the spirit of Nobel Laureate Daniel Kahneman’s intuitive (thinking fast) and deliberative (thinking slow) approaches – by proposing strategies that encourage long-term thinking balanced with short-term considerations. The panel will also discuss with the audience a check-list that can be applied to individual decision making, actions taken by firms, NGOs, and government entities in developed and developing countries alike.

Shabbar was concerned after hearing her neighbor Toney is charged with five counts of an improper relationship with a student and 11 counts of sexual assault of a child.
“I'm worried for my son because sometimes you open the door and he'll just go outside. I'm watching him, but still, it's kind of scary,” she said.
Authorities arrested the former band director last week.
"I believe the school already had information about the allegations before this tip even came in," said Wharton County District Attorney Ross Kurtz.
Kurtz said a Crime Stoppers tip in April led to the investigation. The tipster claimed they saw Toney and the 16-year-old girl holding hands and sharing a blanket during a movie in the band hall. Investigators also learned students saw the two kissing in a hallway.
"We've spoken to the child in this case, we've spoken to other people, we examined his electronic equipment," Kurtz said. The defendant was also spoken to."

WHARTON, Texas -
A former band director at Wharton High School was charged with having an inappropriate relationship with a student.
Wharton ISD confirmed Jason Toney, 29, worked at the school for five years. Prosecutors said it's where he met his victim and they had a sexual relationship for more than a year.
“Everybody wants to live in a safe environment for their kids, but it's shocking to me,” said neighbor Alia Shabbar.

“If you ask my daughter and my son was it worth it that I came to Wharton they would definitely have to say yes … because if I had not come to Wharton, they would not be here,” Hamilton said.

Trump: I went to Wharton, I'm too smart to have implied Megyn Kelly was on her period
Trump: I went to Wharton, I'm too smart to have implied Megyn Kelly was on her period
Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union With Jake Tapper,” Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said he was talking about Megyn Kelly bleeding from her nose and not referring to her menstruation cycle in his comments Friday night to CNN that have caused a firestorm of controversy.
Trump said, “She was very angry because I bested her with a question that was a very unfair question. So she was very angry, and when I was speaking about it on a CNN show, by the way, which was interesting, but I was speaking about her – I said blood was pouring from her eyes or out of her eyes, which is a very common statement, and by the way, I said the same thing about Chris Wallace.”
He continued, “I said — no, blood was pouring from wherever. I wanted to finish the sentence. I wanted to get off of the whole thing and get back on to the subject of jobs or whatever we were talking to about right after that. So, I didn’t even say anything because I didn’t even finish the thought. I was going to say, nose, and/or ears. Because that’s a very common statement. Blood flowing out of somebody’s nose. It’s a statement showing– and remember she had great anger when she was questioning me, especially since I mentioned something, that was the Rosie O’Donnell statement which everybody said was by far the loudest applause of the entire day of all of the speakers. I think you would agree. She became very angry. All I was doing was referring to her anger. I said nothing wrong whatsoever.”
“Only a deviant would say that what I said was what they were referring to. Because nobody can make that. you almost have to be sick to sort of put that together.”
When host Jake Tapper pushed saying, “You’re saying that you did not mean to suggest that Megyn Kelly was having her period?” Trump shot back,” Of course I didn’t! Who would say that? I went to the Wharton school of Finance, I was an excellent student, I’m a smart person. I built a tremendous company. I had a show called ‘The Apprentice’ that NBC desperately wanted me to do another season. I do all this stuff. Do you think I make a stupid statement like that? Who would make a statement like that? Only a sick person would even think about it.”

New School Community Meeting at Wharton Dual Language Academy
Watch David Irwin WG95, vice president and U.S. market leader of Fiserv Global Services, share with Wharton Magazine how the Wharton Effect has equipped him with the connections to drive his technology career.
Irwin has been working at Fiserv, a company that offers technology solutions to financial services companies, for the past 12 years. He recalls a turning point in that tenure 10 years ago, when Irwin was connected with Arun K. Maheshwari G70 GRW73, a Wharton alumnus 25 years his senior based in India. According to Irwin, Maheshwari is “a legend in the whole growth of the Indian IT services business.”
Irwin and Maheshwari worked together to build a business that today has grown to about $150 million in revenue.
“The whole time I was able to work with Arun on this [project], it was all the more sweeter because we were able to share those common Wharton experiences, talk in the common language of having been educated at the Wharton School,” Irwin says.
When he looks back, he realizes how the Wharton Effect has created more opportunities and experiences in his career than he could have ever imagined.

The fact that any of us are here at all, "is kind of shocking given this myth". It needs to be dismantled and a community that recognizes that "average is actually pretty awesome" should be built in its place.
Jacob self-identifies as a mediocre programmer and invites others to join him; "together we can do our jobs perfectly adequately".

Former Wharton High School band director accused of sex with student
WHARTON, Texas -
A former band director at Wharton High School was charged with having an inappropriate relationship with a student.
Wharton ISD confirmed Jason Toney, 29, worked at the school for five years. Prosecutors said it's where he met his victim and they had a sexual relationship for more than a year.
“Everybody wants to live in a safe environment for their kids, but it's shocking to me,” said neighbor Alia Shabbar.

Without Wharton School, Without Family
“If you ask my daughter and my son was it worth it that I came to Wharton they would definitely have to say yes … because if I had not come to Wharton, they would not be here,” Hamilton said.

Trump: I went to Wharton, I'm too smart to have implied Megyn Kelly was on her period
