The X Factor: Incredibly nervous 16-year-old Janet has flown over from the depths of Ireland to be at her audition. Living in a tiny village in the middle of nowhere has meant that she spends a lot of time on her own, using her songwriting abilities as a form of escapism. She's not sung in public before due to her lack of confidence, but she's managed to summon some courage to perform today. One look at the judges' faces proves that her trip to England wasn't wasted. David Niven looks stunned - he just got slapped at "Sardi's" restaurant in New York by Janis Paige. You see, Janis became angry when drama critic David indicated in his column that Janis' only talent was that of shaking her fanny - and that did not warrant her appearance upon the Broadway stage. Sympathetic wife Doris Day looks on - while continuing to eat her Eggs Benedict and cheesecake.
This is one of the funny scenes in the bright M-G-M comedy "Please Don't Eat The Daisies" (1960). This film was a big hit for Doris Day, and her recording became very popular as well. The film was based upon the book of the same name which chronicled the real-life experiences of mother, wife and author Jean Kerr, and her real-life husband, drama critic Walter Kerr - dealing with life in New York City and the suburbs, fixing up a ramshackle old house, and coping with 4 little "monsters" (sons). Janis Paige provided spirited support as the Broadway actress who first slaps - then flirts (shamelessly) - with David Niven. When Niven tells Janis that he is married and not available - Janis replies "Everyone is available who isn't dead!" (one of the very funny lines in the film).
This title song was recorded on January 7, 1960 in Hollywood, CA. - as it was heard in the film sung by Doris and a group of children. The orchestra is under the direction of Bill Marx (son of Harpo Marx). This is a mono version as released on the 45 single pictured above.
wn.com/Doris Day Please Don't Eat The Daisies (Mono 45 Version) (From The M G M Film)

Perez "Prez" Prado leads his Latin orchestra in a rendition of one of the big hits from the Broadway production "The Pajama Game" - the lively number "Steam Heat". This show was a huge success, and starred Janis Paige, John Raitt, Eddie Foy, Jr. and the dancing sensation Carol Haney. When the show was made into a film in 1957, most of the same stage cast was recruited for the movie - with the exception of the casting of Doris Day as "Babe" Williams, taking the place of Janis Paige.
During the run of the Broadway show, a talented, spirited (and unknown) young dancer from the chorus named Shirley MacLaine was understudying Carol Haney - whose big number in the show was "Steam Heat" - danced with two male dancers and involving much tossing up (and catching) derby hats throughout the dance. Shirley had only one line in the show and was in some of the dances.
Carol Haney was a dynamo and a workhorse - so Shirley never expected to have to go on for her. However, in the best "cliche" tradition of the movies - Carol sprained (or broke) her ankle, and suddenly, Shirley had to go "on" for Carol. Shirley knew the lines and dances pretty well, but was scared to death that she would drop her derby during the "Steam Heat" number - and sure enough, on her first night substituting for Carol Haney - she DID drop it! Shirley said "SH*T" under her breath when she did so, (and was sure the folks in the front row heard her) - but in spite of that, she got through her first performance in fine style! Fate took a hand here, because during Shirley's time substituting for Carol Haney, Hal Wallis from Paramount pictures and a man named Alfred Hitchcock came to see the show - were quite taken with gamin Shirley - and she was given a long-term Hollywood contract with Wallis, and slated to star in Hitchcock's next picture - "The Trouble With Harry" (Hitchcock wanted an unknown for the female lead role). And...as they say, the rest is history! However, Shirley confesses that every time she hears the melody "Hey There" - the song from "The Pajama Game" that started the overture - she still gets a queasy stomach, recalling her stage fright before each performance!

John Lennon 75th Birthday - Stephen K. Peeples on KCSN-FM, Pt. 3/4
Stephen K. Peeples, the original award-winning writer-producer Westwood One’s "Lost Lennon Tapes” radio series (1988-1990), was guest DJ on “Saturday with The Beatles hosted by Les Perry (The Saturday Club),” broadcast on KCSN-FM 88.5-Northridge/Los Angeles Saturday morning, Oct. 3, 2015.
The program’s focus was what would have been ex-Beatle John Lennon’s 75th birthday, as well as the 40thth birthday of Sean Taro Ono Lennon, Lennon and Yoko Ono’s son. Both were born Oct. 9 (1940 and 1975, respectively).
Oct. 3, 2015 was also Peeples’ 64th birthday. The guest-DJ stint was a special gift arranged by Ruth Peeples, his sister and fellow Beatles and Lennon fan (also a California State University, Northridge alum, and Golden Mike-winning KCSN-FM news reporter).
Peeples was accompanied on the air by David C. Kephart, the original “Lost Lennon Tapes” engineer-producer. Many of the elements heard in this birthday celebration first aired in “LLT” in its first two years on the air, 1988-1989.
The “Saturday with The Beatles” broadcast was the very first to originate from KCSN’s brand-new satellite studio at the Village at Topanga Plaza, in Canoga Park, Calif.
Also in the studio: Ruth Peeples; Nadine A. Peeples, Stephen’s wife; and Paige Hagen, his associate producer and videographer.
