Prior to the ninth century, hordes of Turks had crossed the Volga River into the Black Sea steppes. Originally, the House of Seljuq was a branch of the Qinik (Kınık) Oghuz Turks who in the 9th century lived on the periphery of the Muslim world, north of the Caspian and Aral seas in their YabghuKhaganate of the Oghuz confederacy, in the Kazakh Steppe of Turkestan. In the 10th century the Seljuqs migrated from their ancestral homelands into mainland Persia, in the province of Khurasan, where they mixed with the local population and adopted the Persian culture and language in the following decades.
The House of Seljuq ( Persian: سلجوقيان Saljūqiyān; Turkish: Selçuklular; Turkmen: Selçuklar) was a Turkish Sunni Muslim dynasty that gradually adopted Persian culture and contributed to the Turko-Persian tradition in the medieval West and Central Asia. The Seljuqs established both the Seljuq Empire and Sultanate of Rum, which at their total height stretched from Anatolia through Persia, and were targets of the First Crusade.

When Seljuq, the leader of the Seljuq clan, had a falling out with Yabghu, the supreme chieftain of the Oghuz Turks, he split his clan off from the bulk of the Tokuz-Oghuz and set up camp on the west bank of the lower Syr Darya (Jaxartes). Around 985, Seljuq converted to Islam. In the 11th century the Seljuqs migrated from their ancestral homelands into mainland Persia, in the province of Khorasan where they encountered the Ghaznavid empire. The Seljuqs defeated the Ghaznavids at the battle of the Nasa plains in 1035. Tughril, Chaghri, and Yabghu received the insignias of governor, grants of land, and were given the Persian titles of dehqan. At the battle of Dandanaqan they defeated a Ghaznavid army, and after a successful siege of Isfahan by Tughril in 1050/51, they established an empire later called the Great Seljuk Empire. The Seljuqs mixed with the local population and adopted the Persian culture and language in the following decades.
After arriving in Persia, the Seljuqs adopted Persian culture and used Persian language as the official language of government, and played an important role in the development of the Turko-Persian tradition which features Persian culture patronized by Turkic military rulers. Today, they are remembered as great patrons of Persian culture, art, literature, and language and are regarded as the partial ancestors of the Western Turks – the present-day inhabitants of Azerbaijan, Turkey and Turkmenistan." - Wikipedia (Seljuq dynasty)

The Seljuqs (also Seljuk or Seljuq Turks) were a Muslim dynasty of originally Oghuz Turkic descent that ruled parts of Central Asia and the Middle East from the eleventh to fourteenth centuries. They set up an empire known as "Great Seljuk Empire" that stretched from Anatolia to Punjab and was the target of the First Crusade. Increasingly fractured by fighting among independent Seljuk principalities, the once great Seljuk Empire was weakened during the first two crusades, gave way to the Ayyubid dynasty under Saladin, and finally crumbled during the Mongol invasions. It was ultimately succeeded by the Ottoman Empire, which inherited much of his cultural foundation.
The dynasty marked the beginning of Turkic power in the Middle East. The Seljuks are regarded as the cultural ancestors of the Western Turks, the present-day inhabitants of Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Turkmenistan.

The break up of the Soviet Union has led to the opening up of one of the world's most extraordinary archaeological treasures.
Now an international archaeological team is excavating Merv, one of the most significant capitals on the ancient Silk Route.
But just as the world wakes up to its existence, Merv is in danger of being lost.
Rising damp from the Karakum Canal, created by the Russians in the 1950s, is disintegrating the ancient mud brick buildings.
Today there's not much more than a few disintegrating mud brick monuments.
But at one time Merv was one of the major capitals on the ancient Silk Route between China and the West.
It rivalled Damascus, Baghdad and even Cairo as a trading centre.
Nowadays, few people live here... most trade is done outside the city.
Perestroika and the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1992 led to the opening up of Merv to archaeologists for the first time in 70 years.
Following this period of openness, the International Merv Project was established with a team of archaeologists from around the world.
The I-M-P is co-ordinated by the British Museum, University College London and the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan.
Team members include Georgina Herrmann, from U-C-L, and Kakamurad Kurbansakhatov from the A-S-T.
During the Soviet period Herrmann knew about Merv only from occasional publications from her Soviet counterparts.
When Herrmann first saw Merv she says she was overwhelmed by its sheer size and the fact that the mud brick buildings had survived for more than a thousand years.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Merv is a very special site, among many things because of the way it developed, there are a whole series of cities not built one on top of each other as lets say Jerusalem, but side by side, so each of them is a sort of time capsule offering you the chance to look at it archaeologically right on the surface. And this of course is very exciting, so we can look at the different periods and create the history of the city through the millennia."
SUPERCAPTION: Georgina Herrmann, co-director of International Merv Project
During the 11th Century under the Seljuq sultans, Merv was one of the world's largest and most cosmopolitan centres.
Merv was the eastern capital of the Seljuqs, a Turkic tribe whose rule ran from Central Asia westward to Anatolia and southward to Arabia.
It was also a famous centre of learning, attracting mathematicians and astronomers from all over the world.
The 13th Century saw the end of the Seljuks. Mongol hordes attacked Merv three times - resulting in the death of over a (m) million citizens.
Merv was later revived in the 15th Century - when Timurid ruler Shah Rukh, a distant relative of Gengis Khan, built a new city a few kilometres from the ruined Seljuk capital.
The Timurid city grew and prospered - but never reached the significance of the Seljuq dynasty.
For a time Merv was used as a military base for the Soviet Union's offensive in Afghanistan, and so was completely out of bounds to ordinary citizens - and more importantly archaeologists.
In the 1950s the Soviets diverted water from the Oxus River to create the Karakum Canal to enable cotton to be grown in the region.
The Karakum Canal caused a double environmental blow. The draining of the Oxus River not only resulted in the drying up of the Aral Sea, but may have condemned Merv's monuments to death.
The raised water table has led to a "greening" of the desert.
Formerly dry barren land is now covered in grass.
Rising damp is eating away the monuments, and large chunks have already disappeared.

And this of course is very exciting, so we can look at the different periods and create the history of the city through the millennia."

In which John Green teaches you, at long last, about the most exceptional bunch of empire-building nomads in the history of the world, the Mongols! How did the Mongols go from being a relatively small band of herders who occasionally engaged in some light hunting-gathering to being one of the most formidable fighting forces in the world? It turns out Genghis Khan was a pretty big part of it, but you probably already knew that. The more interesting questions might be, what kind of rulers were they, and what effect did their empire have on the world we know today? Find out, as John FINALLY teaches you about the Mongols.

Beautiful, 5 Amazing Places in Iran. It might not be on everyone's travel radar, but Iran has a well-worn tourist circuit, encompassing attractions in the ancient cities of Shiraz and Isfahan.
For those wanting to get off the beaten path, the country has a wealth of lesser-known destinations that rival the stunning beauty and historical significance of their more famous counterparts. Here are five of the best: beautiful places in iran, best places in iran, best places to travel in iran, best places in dubai, best places in the world, best places to travel around the world, best places to visit in the world, beautiful place in the word, travel,
Rudkhan Castle
Hidden in the humid green forests of Iran's northern Gilan province is Rudkhan Castle, a medieval military fortress whose origins predate the rise of Islam in Iran.
Few foreign tourists have visited the site, which is a popular attraction among Iranians. Work started on the castle during the Persian Sassanid era, between A.D. 224 and 651. Followers of the Ismaili sect (the infamous "Assassins" or "Hashashin") are believed to have renovated and completed the fortress during the late 11th to 12th centuries.
Bekhradi Historical House
This 400-year-old inn built in Persia's Safavid era features four tastefully decorated multiroomed guest suites and is the oldest house to be restored in Iran.
Its renovation and artistic restoration took local interior designer and restoration specialist Morteza Bekhradi five years to engineer and complete.
Peppered with stained-glass windows and original artwork from the Safavid and subsequent Qajar eras, the house sits between two gardens replete with fruits and wildflowers.
Soltaniyeh Dome
A UNESCO World Heritage site in the northwestern province of Zanjan, the mausoleum of Oljaytu at Soltaniyeh is topped by one of the world's largest domes.
Built between 1302 and 1312 in Soltaniyeh, the capital city of the Mongols' Ilkhanid Dynasty, the monument is a mausoleum for Il-khan Oljeitu, the Ilkhanid's eighth ruler.
Though much of the structure's exterior coloring and tiles have faded through the centuries, the intricate brickwork, tilework and vibrant designs inside the mausoleum have remained largely unscathed.
Laleh Kandovan Rocky Hotel
About 30 miles outside the northwestern city of Tabriz lies the troglodyte village of Kandovan.
People here live in cone-shaped caves cut out of volcanic rock at the foot of Mount Sahand, a dormant volcano.
Nestled within the 800-year-old village, the Laleh Kandovan Rocky Hotel has been literally hand-carved into the rocky landscape, with each of the luxury hotel's 16 modernized rooms encompassing a cave, or "karaan."
Toghrol Tower
Toghrol Tower is a Seljuk-era monument situated in the city of Rey, on the southern outskirts of Iran's capital city, Tehran.
Often overlooked by visitors who tend to stick to the higher-income northern and central areas of the Iranian capital, Rey is the oldest county in Tehran province and is speckled with historical monuments, including a 500-year-old Safavid-era bazaar.
The tower is said to serve as the mausoleum for Seljuk king Toghrol Beg, who established Rey as a major administrative center of the Seljuk Dynasty until its destruction by Mongol armies in the early 13th century.

A collection of theme songs from the Seljuks of Iraq / Seljuks of Rûm campaigns in the historical Broken Crescent mod for Medieval II: Total War.
"The Seljuqs originated from the Qynyk branch of the Oghuz Turks, who in the 9th century lived on the periphery of the Muslim world, north of the Caspian and Aral seas in their Yabghu Khaganate of the Oghuz confederacy, in the Kazakh Steppe of Turkestan. During the 10th century, due to various events, the Oghuz Turks had come into close contact with Muslim cities.
