Looking to add a little spice to her life, host Felix Fang heads to Guelaguetza—a Oaxacan oasis in the middle of Los Angeles—to explore the amorous pairing of sweet, smoky mezcal and rich homemade mole. The Lopez family shows her how to work the metate and grind all 21 ingredients into a complex, traditional mole sauce before heading to the bar to sip mezcal and munch on crunchy chapulines (spicy toasted grasshoppers) before dinner. Subscribe to Munchies here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-MUNCHIES While you might think that college food is nothing but beer and microwavable macaroni and cheese, most frat houses in the United States actually have a personal chef—so rest assured they’re eating way better than we were in college. Host and Chef Lee Tiernan travels to Chicago to meet up with friend Chris Buccheri, the personal chef for the Delta Tau Delta fraternity at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Despite his formal training and keen palate, Chef Buccheri’s frat house menu is usually made up of the four basic food groups—chicken fingers, pizza, burritos, and cereal—but under Lee’s watch that’s all about to change. Watch as Chris and Lee take these bros on the culinary journey of a lifetime with dishes like tripe skewers with pickled cabbage, blood pudding-coated Manchester eggs, and salted rockfish salad. Subscribe to Munchies here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-MUNCHIES In this episode of The Politics of Food, Ben Ferguson investigates the UK’s growing illegal trade in "smokies,” a West African delicacy that has been outlawed in Europe since 1987. Journeying through an underground economy that operates between rural Welsh farmers and urban African communities, he uncovers how black market traders are risking prison to buy and sell blowtorched sheep carcasses. Ben also meets the sheep farmers and families who are fighting to change the law, as well as the scientists who warn that smokies can kill. At the center of this whole debate is Carmello Gale, a black market gang boss—or a food freedom fighter, depending on who you talk to. On the face of it, this trade is a remarkable clash of traditions, and one that paints an accurate picture of modern Britain. As the smokie trail winds its way through rural livestock markets to the homes of African expats, we see how the politics of food is shaping our laws and—as some believe—criminalizing certain cultures. In this episode of Soul Food, our host Kiran Deol heads over to LA’s Kosher Corridor to get wise to the ways one can keep it kosher. She gets schooled by the local butcher, and discovers that today’s kosher food and drink is much more than just matzo balls and sweet, syrupy wine. Kosher cuisine can be contemporary, or really any style of food—be it burritos or a lamb belly “bacon” sandwich with homemade sriracha—as long as one follows strict kosher guidelines. Kiran’s exploration of where the spirit meets the stomach ends with an insightful invite for a Friday night sampling of a Shabbat dinner. Watch Part 2 now - http://bit.ly/Dog-Days-2 Southern China has always had a tradition of dining on dogs—people from other parts of the country even joke that Southerners will eat anything with legs but the dinner table. But despite becoming more prosperous in the 1990s, Yulin has maintained the unique tradition of holding a canine banquet every summer. Animal rights activists across China and the rest of the globe have increasingly condemned the Dog Meat Festival, calling for an immediate stop to eating man’s best friend. They say the dog meat trade is illegal, unregulated, and cruel. Many claim that numerous dogs that end up in cooking pots are stolen pets or diseased strays. In 2013, the Yulin festival gathered so much negative press that this year, the local government denied the Summer Solstice dog-eating tradition ever even existed. But that hasn’t stopped locals from celebrating—nor has it stopped die-hard activists from flooding the town to try to rescue dogs before the slaughter. VICE Reports headed to Yulin this year to get to the bottom of the most controversial festival in China. Click here to subscribe to VICE: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE Before Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution, citizens weren't required to wear the Islamic cover known as the hijab and the country's fashion was almost identical to that of the United States and Europe. After the revolution, though, the hijab became required by law. Although the standard black hijab is still commonplace—especially in rural areas in the country—Iran has recently seen a fashion renaissance, and cities like Tehran are becoming home to new and innovative designers. The clothing may still have to respect the Islamic dress codes, but the bright colors and designs would never have been seen a decade ago in Iran. Last summer, VICE went to Tehran to attend the third annual Fajr Fashion Show and speak with some of Iran's new designers. The country's top officials—responsible for granting permission for the show—were all seated in the front row to show show their support. And to make sure the models were adhering to the country's law. Watch Part 2 on VICE.com now - http://bit.ly/Reoffenders-II In this episode of Rule Britannia, VICE meets "Saky's Finest"—a gang of young reoffenders based on the Saxton Road estate in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. Locked into a cycle of reoffending and going to jail, some of these guys have spent so much of their childhood in Young Offenders' Institutes that they'd rather be back inside than in the real world. 20-year-old Coopz is looking at a serious stretch in adult jail after being recently bailed in connection with the attempted robbery of a local shop. Ross and Nathan, who at 27 are considered the "olders" of the group, both try to stop him from going down the same paths they did. We also meet Pitts, arguably the most institutionalized member of the gang, who has only seen the outside world for a matter of weeks in the last six years. Now out, he just wants to have fun, get pissed and fight—as well as settling an old score with Reggie, the local store owner, for something that happened 12 years ago. Mail Guardian South Africa 2015-04-10Islam (English /ˈɪzlɑːm/;Arabic: الإسلام al-ʾislām IPA: [ʔɪsˈlæːm] ( listen)) is a monotheistic and Abrahamic religion articulated by the Qur'an, a text considered by its adherents to be the verbatim word of God (Arabic: الله Allāh), and by the teachings and normative example (called the Sunnah and composed of Hadith) of Muhammad, considered by them to be the last prophet of God. An adherent of Islam is called a Muslim.
Muslims believe that God is one and incomparable and the purpose of existence is to love and serve God. Muslims also believe that Islam is the complete and universal version of a primordial faith that was revealed at many times and places before, including through Abraham, Moses and Jesus, whom they consider prophets. They maintain that previous messages and revelations have been partially changed or corrupted over time, but consider the Qur'an to be both the unaltered and the final revelation of God. Religious concepts and practices include the five pillars of Islam, which are basic concepts and obligatory acts of worship, and following Islamic law, which touches on virtually every aspect of life and society, providing guidance on multifarious topics from banking and welfare, to warfare and the environment.
A home is a place of residence or refuge. When it refers to a building, it is usually a place in which an individual or a family can live and store personal property. Most modern-day households contain sanitary facilities and a means of preparing food. Animals have their own homes as well, either living in the wild or shared with humans in a domesticated environment. "Home" is also used to refer to the geographical area (whether it be a suburb, town, city or country) in which a person grew up or feels they belong, or it can refer to the native habitat of a wild animal. Sometimes, as an alternative to the definition of "home" as a physical locale ("Home is where you hang your hat"), home may be perceived to have no physical location, instead, home may relate instead to a mental or emotional state of refuge or comfort. Popular sayings along these lines are "Home is where the heart is" or "You can never go home again".
There are cultures in which member lack a permanent home, such as nomadic peoples.
