Scientists have long speculated about the possibility of life on Mars owing to the planet's proximity and similarity to Earth. Fictional Martians have been a recurring feature of popular entertainment of the 20th and 21st centuries, but it remains an open question whether life currently exists on Mars, or has existed there in the past.
Mars' polar ice caps were observed as early as the mid-17th century, and they were first proven to grow and shrink alternately, in the summer and winter of each hemisphere, by William Herschel in the latter part of the 18th century. By the mid-19th century, astronomers knew that Mars had certain other similarities to Earth, for example that the length of a day on Mars was almost the same as a day on Earth. They also knew that its axial tilt was similar to Earth's, which meant it experienced seasons just as Earth does — but of nearly double the length owing to its much longer year. These observations led to the increase in speculation that the darker albedo features were water, and brighter ones were land. It was therefore natural to suppose that Mars may be inhabited by some form of life.
David Bowie (/ˈboʊ.i/BOH-ee; born David Robert Jones on 8 January 1947) is an English musician, actor, record producer and arranger. A major figure for over four decades in the world of popular music, Bowie is widely regarded as an innovator, particularly for his work in the 1970s. He is known for his distinctive voice and the intellectual depth and eclecticism of his work.
Bowie first caught the eye and ear of the public in July 1969, when his song "Space Oddity" reached the top five of the UK Singles Chart. After a three-year period of experimentation he re-emerged in 1972 during the glam rock era with the flamboyant, androgynousalter ego Ziggy Stardust, spearheaded by the hit single "Starman" and the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Bowie's impact at that time, as described by biographer David Buckley, "challenged the core belief of the rock music of its day" and "created perhaps the biggest cult in popular culture." The relatively short-lived Ziggy persona proved merely one facet of a career marked by continual reinvention, musical innovation and striking visual presentation.
Michio Kaku(加来 道雄,Kaku Michio?, born January 24, 1947) is an American theoretical physicist, the Henry Semat Professor of Theoretical Physics in the City College of New York of City University of New York, a co-founder of string field theory, a futurist, and a "communicator" and "popularizer" of science. He has written several books about physics and related topics; he has made frequent appearances on radio, television, and film; and he writes extensive online blogs and articles. He has written two New York Times best sellers, Physics of the Impossible (2008) and Physics of the Future (2011). He has hosted several TV specials for BBC-TV, the Discovery Channel, and the Science Channel.

Mars, our dear old friend and elusive spectacle, has finally delivered some astoundingly good news for the future of mankind. According to a paper published in the journal Nature Geoscience, scientists have discovered "definitive signs of liquid water" on the surface of the notorious red planet. This means that, in addition to its boastful status as the most expensive advertising campaign for a Matt Damon film of all time, Mars has actual water. As expected, our nation's leading theorists on the future of space travel have already made their Martian thirst strikingly apparent.

Biggest Mysteries of Mars
End of the earth and new Life on Mars
http://www.advexon.com
Mars was known as the "fire star" to ancient Chinese astronomers, and scientists are still burning with questions regarding the Red Planet. Even after dozens of spacecraft have been sent to Mars, much remains unknown about that world. Here are some of the biggest unsolved mysteries we have about Mars.
Why does Mars have two faces?
Scientists have been puzzling over the differences between the two sides of Mars for decades. The northern hemisphere of the planet is smooth and low — it is among the flattest, smoothest places in the solar system, potentially created by water that once flowed across the Martian surface.
Meanwhile, the southern half of the Martian surface is rough and heavily cratered, and about 2.5 miles to 5 miles (4 km to 8 km) higher in elevation than the northern basin. Recent evidence suggests the vast disparity seen between the northern and southern halves of the planet was caused by a giant space rock smacking into Mars long ago.
Still, there are ways to produce methane without life, such as volcanic activity. ESA's ExoMars spacecraft planned for launch in 2016 will study the chemical composition of Mars' atmosphere to learn more about this methane.
Does liquid water run on the surface of Mars now?
Although large amounts of evidence suggest that liquid water once ran on the surface of Mars, it remains an open question as to whether or not it occasionally flows on the face of the Red Planet now. The planet's atmospheric pressure is too low, at about 1/100th of Earth's, for liquid water to last on the surface. However, dark, narrow lines seen on Martian slopes hint that saltwater could be running down them every spring.
Were there oceans on Mars?
Numerous missions to Mars have revealed a host of features on the Red Planet that suggest it was once warm enough for liquid water to run across its surface. These features include what appear to be vast oceans, valley networks, river deltas and minerals that required water to form.
Nevertheless, astronauts seem eager to find out. For example, this year six volunteers lived in a pretend spacecraft for nearly a year and a half in the so-called Mars500 project, the longest spaceflight simulation ever conducted, aimed at replicating a manned mission to Mars from beginning to end. There are even numerous volunteers for a one-way trip to the Red Planet. Tiny rock-eating microbes could mine precious extraterrestrial resources from Mars and pave the way for the first human colonists, and farmers could grow crops on its surface. The mystery as to whether or not humans will ever go to Mars may rest largely on whether or not the powers-that-be can be convinced to go there.

"This, I think, gives a focus of where we should look more closely," Dr. Alfred S. McEwen, the principal investigator of images taken by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, tells the New York Times. Dr. McEwen and his team of Matt Damons scientists revealed the discovery of waterlogged molecules, a type of salts known as perchlorates, using readings from orbit. Jim Green, NASA's Planetary Science Director, kicked off NASA's official announcement festivities on Monday morning with a brief overview of these discoveries.
"That’s a direct detection of water in the form of hydration of salts,” Dr. McEwen confirms. "There pretty much has to have been liquid water recently present to produce the hydrated salt.” As for how recently that water was present, McEwen's estimates point to some time within the last few days, or "something of that order."
So, anyway, let's all move to Mars now. Judging by the snaps below, it has a very Seattle vibe this time of year.

The Martian Official Trailer #1 (2015) - Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig Movie HD
During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.

Humans may only travel to Mars in sci-fi films such as 'The Martian' right now, but Nasa aims to put a man on the red planet in the 2030s.
The space agency has now summarised its ambitious three-phase plan in a report named 'Journey to Mars: Pioneering next steps in space exploration.
It says that the journey crosses three thresholds, each with increasing challenges as humans move farther from Earth.
'NASA is closer to sending American astronauts to Mars than at any point in our history,' said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.

Three years after landing in a giant Martian crater, Nasa's Curiosity rover has found what scientists call proof that the basin had repeatedly filled with water, bolstering chances for life on Mars, a study published on Thursday showed.
The research offered the most comprehensive picture of how Gale Crater, an ancient, 87-mile (140-km) wide impact basin, formed and left a 3-mile (5-km) mound of sediment standing on the crater floor.
Early in its mission, Curiosity discovered the gravel remnants of streams and deposits from a shallow lake.
The new research, published in the journal Science, showed that the crater floor rose over time, the r

Curiosity rover finds crater it is exploring was once a giant Martian LAKE
A Martian crater now being explored by the Nasa rover Curiosity once contained lakes that remained for up to 10,000 years at a time - long enough to support life.
Scientists estimated that over time individual lakes at this location may have persisted for between 100 and 10,000-year-long periods.
This is potentially long enough for primitive life to establish itself in the crater, said the Curiosity team led by Professor John Grotzinger from the California Institute of Technology at Pasadena.
Writing in the journal Science, the researchers concluded: 'One of the key criteria for planetary habitability is the duration for which water might hav

Ancient Mars Had Long-Lasting Lakes, Boosting Chances for Life
Ancient Mars harbored long-lasting lakes, boosting the odds that life could have existed on the Red Planet billions of years ago, a new study suggests.
A series of freshwater lakes within Mars' 96-mile-wide (154 kilometers) Gale Crater likely persisted for hundreds or thousands of years at a time, and perhaps even longer, according to the new study, which is based on observations made by NASA's 1-ton Curiosity rover.
While these individual lakes were apparently transient, drying out and filling up repeatedly over time, the overall lake-and-stream system inside Gale Crater existed for a quite a long time, researchers said.

How Close are We to a Real-life Mars Mission, À La 'The Martian'?
It's no secret that NASA wants to get humans to Mars. At the moment, the space agency's guiding star is the dream of landing people on the red planet sometime in the not-too-distant future. But Hollywood already has them beat. In The Martian, Matt Damon plays astronaut Mark Watney, a NASA botanist who gets left behind on Mars after a dust storm forces the rest of his crew to leave the planet. In the film, Watney and his five crewmates were brought to Mars by a huge rotating spaceship called the Hermes, which was built in low-Earth orbit using a space station backed by the real-life private company SpaceX. So, just how different will NASA's re

Mars rover finds clear evidence for ancient, long-lived lakes, say scientists.
New study reveals ancient lake beds on Mars, bolstering chances of discovering signs of life on the Red Planet.

STORY: Three years after landing in a giant Martian crater, NASA's Curiosity rover has found what scientists call proof that the basin had repeatedly filled with water, bolstering chances for life on Mars, a study published on Thursday (October 8) showed.
The new research, published in the journal Science, showed that the crater floor rose over time, the result of sediments in water settling down, layer after layer, for what may have been thousands of years, California Institute of Technology geologist John Grotzinger said.
"We knew that we had a lake there, but we hadn't grasped just how big it was," Grotzinger said.
Water from north of the crater regularly filled the basin, creating long-lasting lakes that could have been a haven for life. Scientists suspect the water came from rain or snow.
"If one discovers evidence of lakes, that's a very positive sign for life," Grotzinger said.
Eventually, the crater filled with sediments. Then the winds took over and eroded the lakebed, leaving behind just a mound at the center. That mound, named Mount Sharp, is why Curiosity was sent to Gale Crater to look for ancient habitats suitable for microbial life.
Scientists have learned that Mars had all the ingredients thought to be necessary for life.
Exactly how Mars managed to support long-lived surface water is a mystery. Billions of years ago, the planet lost its global magnetic field, which allowed solar and cosmic radiation to gradually blast away its protective atmosphere. Under those conditions, liquid water evaporates quickly.
"If you have a body of standing water that lasts more than hours to days without boiling off, that is a huge surprise," Grotzinger said.
Current computer models of Mars fall well short of an atmospheric blanket thick enough to support the long-lived lakes, the researchers noted.
Grotzinger suspects that Mars may have had greenhouse gases or some other chemistry that so far has gone undetected.
Last week, another team of scientists published research showing that trickles of briny water seasonally flow on present-day Mars, carving narrow streaks into cliff walls throughout the equator. The source of the water is not yet known.

NASA lays out three-phase plan for putting astronauts on Mars
Humans may only travel to Mars in sci-fi films such as 'The Martian' right now, but Nasa aims to put a man on the red planet in the 2030s.
The space agency has now summarised its ambitious three-phase plan in a report named 'Journey to Mars: Pioneering next steps in space exploration.
It says that the journey crosses three thresholds, each with increasing challenges as humans move farther from Earth.
'NASA is closer to sending American astronauts to Mars than at any point in our history,' said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.
'Today, we are publishing additional details about our journey to Mars plan and how we are aligning all of our work in support of this goal.
'In the coming weeks, I look forward to continuing to discuss the details of our plan with members of Congress, as well as our commercial and our international and partners, many of whom will be attending the International Astronautical Congress next week.'
William Gerstenmaier, associate administrator for Human Exploration and Operations at Nasa Headquarters said: 'Nasa's strategy connects near-term activities and capability development to the journey to Mars and a future with a sustainable human presence in deep space.
'This strategy charts a course toward horizon goals, while delivering near-term benefits, and defining a resilient architecture that can accommodate budgetary changes, political priorities, new scientific discoveries, technological breakthroughs, and evolving partnerships.
The first step in getting astronauts to Mars, some 33.9 million miles (54.6 million km) from Earth, is already in progress, with astronauts and Russian cosmonauts living aboard the International Space Station (ISS) for a year to collect data on how their bodies and minds cope.
Technologies are also being tested on the ISS, such as 3D printers for making parts, which could prove useful for replacing broken research kit on the red planet, for example.
This phase is called 'Earth Reliant' exploration.
It's hoped this information will help scientists plan a manned Mars mission, which would entail a minimum 245-day journey to reach the red planet.
There are no details yet about how this might be achieved, but it's possible astronauts may make a pit stop on a Martian moon.
The report says: 'These challenges are solvable, and Nasa and its partners are working on the solutions every day so we can answer some of humanity's fundamental questions about life beyond Earth: Was Mars home to microbial life? Is it today? Could it be a safe home for humans one day? What can it teach us about life elsewhere in the cosmos or how life began on Earth? What can it teach us about Earth's past, present and future?'

Writing in the journal Science, the researchers concluded: 'One of the key criteria for planetary habitability is the duration for which water might have been accessible to enable microbial origination and evolution.
'The Gale crater floor today is the lowest topographic depression for over 1,000 kilometres in any direction, including the northern plains.
'Our results show that water pooled there, in surface and subsurface reservoirs, for a geologically and perhaps biologically relevant period of time.'
'Observations from the rover suggest that a series of long-lived streams and lakes existed at some point between about 3.8 to 3.3 billion years ago, delivering sediment that slowly built up the lower layers of Mount Sharp,' said Ashwin Vasavada, Mars Science Laboratory project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, and co-author of the study.
The findings build upon previous work that suggested there were ancient lakes on Mars.
Last month, NASA scientists confirmed current water flows on Mars.

There are so many similarities to living on Mars (or outer space) and living full time in an RV. You have to manage your energy consumption, energy generation, food, fuel, and waste disposal, and you live in an a small climate controlled environment! And you explore new areas....

Three years after landing in a giant Martian crater, NASA's Curiosity rover has found what scientists call proof that the basin had repeatedly filled with water, bolstering chances for life on Mars. The research offered the most comprehensive picture of how Gale Crater, an ancient, 87-mile wide impact basin, formed and left a 3-mile mound of sediment standing on the crater floor. Water from north of the crater regularly filled the basin, creating long-lasting lakes that could have been a haven for life. Scientists suspect the water came from rain or snow.

"Even if the lake goes away, there's still going to be a groundwater table," study lead author John Grotzinger, of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, told Space.com.
"If life had evolved on Mars, you now have a habitat which is perpetually wet that would allow microbes to be sustained," added Grotzinger, a Curiosity team member who previously served as project scientist on the $2.5 billion mission. "Those environments would have existed probably for millions, if not tens of millions of years throughout the rocks that we see."
Curiosity has been exploring the spacious interior of Gale Crater since August 2012, when the car-size rover landed on a mission to determine if the area could ever have supported microbial life.
Curiosity succeeded in this main task quickly, finding evidence near its landing site that a habitable lake-and-stream system existed within the crater about 3.5 billion years ago.
The new study, which was published online today (Oct. 8) in the journal Science, further characterizes that system and its duration. Grotzinger and his colleagues analyzed photos taken by Curiosity near the robot's landing site and throughout its 5-mile-long (8 km) traverse to Mount Sharp, which rises 3.4 miles (5.5 km) into the Martian sky from Gale's center. (Curiosity set out for Mount Sharp's foothills in July 2013 and arrived there in September 2014.)

So, just how different will NASA's real mission to Mars be?
"By the 2030s, we want a human presence in that area [Mars], perhaps a flyby like we did to the moon... or perhaps going to Phobos and Deimos, which are two moons of Mars," Jim Green, NASA director of the planetary science division, tells Mashable.
Green added that the current plan is to get "boots on the ground" by the 2040s or 2050s, according to the strategy President Barack Obama has laid out for the agency.

I think I may have just proven there's life on Mars with the same levels of circumstantial evidence. Watch the entire thing to see if you really believe there is no life out there, on 'any planet.' Did Mars long ago develop far enough for life to arise? If so, does anything still live within Mars' dusty plains, beneath its ice caps, or somewhere underground?
In 1964 the Mariner Four spacecraft flew by Mars and got a good look. What it saw looked more like the Moon than the Earth. Then, in the mid-1970's, two lander-orbiter robot teams, named Viking, went in for an even closer look. The landers tested the soil for the chemical residues of life. All the evidence from Viking told us: Mars is dead. And extremely harsh.
The mission recorded Martian surface temperatures from -17 degrees Celsius down to -107. We now know it can get even col

From Wiki : Spirit, MER-A (Mars Exploration Rover -- A), is a robotic rover on Mars, active from 2004 to 2010. It was one of two rovers of NASA's ongoing Mars Exploration Rover Mission. It landed successfully on Mars at 04:35 Ground UTC on January 4, 2004, three weeks before its twin, Opportunity (MER-B), landed on the other side of the planet. Its name was chosen through a NASA-sponsored student essay competition. The rover became stuck in late 2009, and its last communication with Earth was sent on March 22, 201

Recent extensive exploration of Mars by the US and Europe has provided a wealth of new information about our neighbor and has significantly changed our perspective on the red planet. Mars is sometimes called "a frozen water planet," but it almost certainly experienced a warm and wet climate in the past. The question, "Why and when did Earth and Mars diverge?" is essential for understanding how the the development of life depends on environment. Here we discuss our attempts to find evidence of life on Mars using dedicated instruments on Haleakalā.

Some of our friends at the Lakeview Museum of Arts and Sciences in Peoria, Illinois, wonder whether there is life on Mars. This is an idea that has intrigued people for centuries, and one that I, perhaps like you, have wondered about for most of my own life.
Earth is the only place that we know for certain supports life. Many claims have been made by observers who thought they saw evidence of life on Mars, but we now know they were tricked by the very difficult measurements. From Earth, even with our most powerful telescopes, we just cannot see enough detail on Mars to answer this question. We need a

Was there a Nuclear explosion on Mars back in 1941? Famous Astronomer Clyde Tombaugh certainly thought so. This notable genius who discovered Pluto in 1930 witnessed the very bright flash on Mars in 1941. He also advised the US military on the matter.
Quote.
"Although our own solar system is believed to support no other life than on Earth, other stars in the galaxy may have hundreds of thousands of habitable worlds. Races on these worlds may have been able to utilize the tremendous amounts of power required to bridge the space between the stars..." Tombaugh stated that he had observed celestial phenomena which he could not explain, but had se

Extreme Environments - Hydrothermal settings for early life on Earth (and Mars?) - Kathleen Campbell
It is well known that New Zealand hosts spectacular hot-springs associated with a live super-volcano. Less well known is that these geothermal systems are rapidly mineralizing, entombing within silica a biota adapted to high temperatures, and thus serving as an extreme environment analog in the continuing search for the earliest signs of life on Earth and potentially other planets, such as Mars. This hypothesis stems from the following observations – the deepest roots of today’s “Tree of Life” constitute heat-loving microbes in hot springs; some Precambrian settings for early life were silica-rich and hydrothermally influenced; and siliceous
Do you need them to come knocking at your door 'as proof?' When it comes to this video, many will just view the first few minutes and jump off the boat... but all my video's hold information that relates to one another. Think of this: If they can slam people into jail based on circumstantial evidence for the rest of their living lives, until they are deceased? I think I may have just proven there's life on Mars with the same levels of circumstantial evidence. Watch the entire thing to see if you really believe there is no life out there, on 'any planet.' What more proof do you need that there's intelligent life out there? What more proof do you need when it comes to life on Mars? Where will we be in 2023 when it comes to Mars? The answer is in this video. Where will we be in 2016, when it comes to Mars. The answer is in this video. Alien life on Mars? It sure looks like it. How did we see Mars decades ago, and how do we see Mars decades from now? All answered in this video. I hope you enjoy. After watching this video? What with water now being discovered on Mars, I believe there is life on Mars, or nearby, or underground, and was, particularly if you consider all of the odd structures that 'are' in photo's / images.

Did Mars long ago develop far enough for life to arise?
We now know it can get even colder than that at the poles. The atmosphere is 95% carbon dioxide, with only traces of oxygen. And it's extremely thin, with less than one percent the surface pressure of Earth's atmosphere.
And it's bone dry. In fact, the Sahara Desert is a rainforest compared to Mars, where water vapor is a trace gas in the atmosphere. On Earth, impact craters erode over time from wind and water... and even volcanic activity. On Mars, they can linger for billions of years.
Earth's surface is shaped and reshaped by the horizontal movement of plates that make up its crust driven by heat welling up from the planet's hot interior. At half the width and only 11% the mass of Earth, Mars doesn't generate enough heat to support wide-scale plate tectonics.
Nor does it have the gravity to hold a thick atmosphere needed to store enough heat at the surface to allow liquid water to flow. Nonetheless, some areas that looked to Viking-era scientists like craters and volcanic areas, were later shown to be riverbeds, lake bottoms, and ocean shorelines.
If water once flowed on Mars' surface, where did it all go?
This was the scene at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab in 2004. The twin rovers Spirit and Opportunity had just bounced down on the Red Planet. When the excitement died down, the rovers were set off on one of the most remarkable journeys in the history of planetary exploration. Missions like this could one day pave the way for a day when we'll view images from a real astronaut's camera.
Opportunity had come to rest in a small crater near the equator, at a spot called Meridiani Planum. Here, in plain view, on a nearby crater wall, its camera revealed exposed bedrock, the first ever seen on Mars. Not far away, the rover found layered rocks on the face of a cliff. On Earth, they typically form as sedimentary layers at the bottom of oceans.
And at every turn, Opportunity rolled across tiny, smooth, round pellets. They became known as "blueberries" because they appeared purplish-brown against Mars' rust-colored surface. Initially thought to be volcanic in origin, they turned out to be iron-rich spherules of the type that form within cavities in the mud at the bottom of an ocean.
Drilling into rocks, the rover inserted a spectrometer to read the mineral content. The readings showed significant amounts of sulfate salt, a tracer for standing water. That wasn't all. Spirit's broken wheel, dragging behind it, exposed soils saturated in salt.
Clearly there once was water on Mars' surface, but how long ago? And, if there is anything left, where would you find it? One possible answer: the North Pole. From orbit, this region seemed to be covered in frozen CO2 - what we call dry ice. But was there water ice below the surface?
Enter Phoenix, a lander that touched down near the North Pole in early 2008. Radar readings from orbit, taken by the Mars Express mission, hinted at the presence of ice just below the surface.
The Phoenix lander's descent thrusters blew away the top layer of soil, allowing its camera to snap pictures of what looked like ice. Scientists instructed the robot to conduct a simple experiment: reach out and dig a trench, then watch what happens.
As expected, clumps of white stuff appeared. A couple of days later, it was gone. Vaporized. That means it can't be salt or frozen CO2, which is stable in the cold dry temperatures of the Martian pole. So it had to be water, the first ever directly seen on Mars.
There are indications that the North Pole was actually warm enough in the recent past for water ice to become liquid. The Mars Reconaissance Orbiter, or MRO, used radar pulses to peer beneath the surface of the ice cap. These data reveal that the ice, just over a mile thick, formed in a succession of layers as the climate alternated between warm and cold.
Our planet avoids mood swings like this in part because its spin is stabilized by a massive moon. Mars' spin is not, so it can really wobble, with the pole tilting toward the sun for long periods. New observations by the MRO spacecraft show that these wobbles can lead to dramatic releases of CO2, and warming periods due to an increase in the greenhouse effect.

Universe Documentary 2015 - Landing on Mars in Search of Life - Space Documentary 2015
The rover became stuck in late 2009, and its last communication with Earth was sent on March 22, 2010.
The rover completed its planned 90-sol mission. Aided by cleaning events that resulted in higher power from its solar panels, Spirit went on to function effectively over twenty times longer than NASA planners expected following mission completion. Spirit also logged 7.73 km (4.8 mi) of driving instead of the planned 600 m (0.4 mi), allowing more extensive geological analysis of Martian rocks and planetary surface features. Initial scientific results from the first phase of the mission (the 90-sol prime mission) were published in a special issue of the journal Science.
On May 1, 2009 (5 years, 3 months, 27 Earth days after landing; 21.6 times the planned mission duration), Spirit became stuck in soft soil. This was not the first of the mission's "embedding events" and for the following eight months NASA carefully analyzed the situation, running Earth-based theoretical and practical simulations, and finally programming the rover to make extrication drives in an attempt to free itself. These efforts continued until January 26, 2010 when NASA officials announced that the rover was likely irrecoverably obstructed by its location in soft soil, though it continued to perform scientific research from its current location.
The rover continued in a stationary science platform role until communication with Spirit stopped on sol 2210 (March 22, 2010). JPL continued to attempt to regain contact until May 24, 2011, when NASA announced that efforts to communicate with the unresponsive rover had ended. A formal farewell was planned at NASA headquarters after the Memorial Day holiday and was televised on NASA TV.

Thomas C Van Flandern (June 26, 1940 -- January 9, 2009) He attended Yale University on a scholarship sponsored by the U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO),joining USNO in 1963. In 1969 he received a PhD in Astronomy from Yale, with a dissertation on lunar occultations. he was an American astronomer and author specializing in celestial mechanics. Van Flandern had a career as a professional scientist, but was noted as an outspoken proponent of non-mainstream views related to astronomy, physics, and extra-terrestrial life.
He also published the non-mainstream Meta Research Bulletin. He died in Seattle, Washington after a brief battle with cancer.
Tom Van Flandern Quote:
"We've shown conclusively that at least some of the artifacts on the surface of Mars were artificially produced, and the evidence indicates they were produced approximately 3.2 million years ago, which is when Planet V exploded. Mars was a moon of Planet V, and we speculate that the Builders created the artificial structures as theme parks and advertisements to catch the attention of space tourists from Planet V (much as we may do on our own Moon some day, when lunar tourism becomes prevalent), or perhaps they are museums of some kind. Remember that the Face at Cydonia was located on the original equator of Mars. The Builder's civilization ended 3.2 million years ago. The evidence suggests that the explosion was anticipated, so the Builders may have departed their world, and it produced a massive flood, because Planet V was a water world. It is a coincidence that the face on Mars is hominid, like ours, and the earliest fossil record on Earth of hominids is the "Lucy" fossil from 3.2 million years ago. There have been some claims of earlier hominid fossils, but Lucy is the earliest that is definite. So I leave you with the thought that there may be a grain of truth in The War of the Worlds, with the twist that WE are the Martians.
Van Flandern graduated from Xavier University cum laude with a B.S. in Mathematics in 1962 and was awarded a teaching fellowship at Georgetown University. He attended Yale University on a scholarship sponsored by the U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO), joining USNO in 1963. Dr. Flandern helped us look at Mars a different way. He make us think about the possibility of other answers to the formation of the universe. And of the surface of Mars. Remote Sensing of Martian Life: Evidence from Mt Haleakala by Dr. Hiromu Nakagawa

Is There Life on Mars? Space Documentary
We need a close-up look at the planet.
Futuristic human outpost on Mars.
While robotic spacecraft have given us wonderful views, no humans have ever tried to journey to Mars, and no such missions will be attempted for many years. In fact, whoever will turn out to be the first people on Mars may be your age today, and when you are an adult, perhaps you will watch -- or even participate!-- as people make the first voyage to that planet.
In the meantime, NASA is working hard now to discover whether there is life on Mars. The United States and other countries have been sending spacecraft to orbit or land there since the 1960s, and each mission teaches us more about this fascinating planet. We have learned that even though Mars is more similar to Earth than anywhere else in the solar system, and therefore is a good place to look for life, it is still different from Earth in many ways.
A compass points to the north pole on Earth because our whole planet acts like a giant magnet, but Mars does not act this way. Besides turning a compass needle, Earth's magnetic field turns away dangerous particles of space radiation. Without a magnetic field on Mars and with much, much less air than on Earth, more harmful space radiation reaches its surface. Although some measurements tell us there probably is water on Mars, there is far less than on Earth. And it is so cold there that most of the water is probably not liquid but rather is ice. Overall, Mars would be a pretty uncomfortable place to try to live!
Viking 1 takes picture of itself and Mars landscape.
In 1976, NASA landed robotic spacecraft named Viking 1 and Viking 2 on Mars. One of these landers worked there for nearly 4 years and the other lasted more than 6 years. Think of spending that much of your life studying another world! Among their scientific experiments were the only ones so far specifically designed to discover whether there was something tiny (like bacteria) living in the soil.
Viking 1 scoops up Martian soil.
Most scientists agree that the results do not reveal any signs of life. The spacecraft had cameras that returned thousands of images of the surface, showing the changing seasons and details of the rocks and dirt near the stationary landers. While not officially part of the life experiments, the cameras did show us that there weren't any large creatures wandering around! Future landers will probe underneath the surface to try to find out if there is anything living below ground.
Water feature on Mars.
But where is the best place to look for life? Although Mars is smaller than Earth, it is still a very, very big place, so where should scientists aim landers to give them the best chance of finding evidence of life? All life on Earth depends upon water, so spacecraft in orbit and the next few landers will search for more signs of water to help guide later missions to promising locations.
Even if there were no life on Mars, it would be exciting to know whether there used to be life there. So in addition to looking for living bacteria, NASA will be searching for tiny fossils that might indicate life got a start early in Mars' history but, unlike on our home planet, it did not survive and evolve into larger life forms.
Many of the studies of Mars will involve robots, like the ones that have gone there before, but getting more advanced with each flight. Someday a spacecraft may pick up samples from Mars and bring them back to Earth where they can be studied in our best laboratories. Eventually, humans may make the daring journey, but many important problems have to be solved before trying such an expensive, difficult, and exciting voyage.
Is There Life on Mars? Space Documentary
Races on these worlds may have been able to utilize the tremendous amounts of power required to bridge the space between the stars..." Tombaugh stated that he had observed celestial phenomena which he could not explain, but had seen none personally since 1951 or 1952. "These things, which do appear to be directed, are unlike any other phenomena I ever observed. Their apparent lack of obedience to the ordinary laws of celestial motion gives credence."
In 1949, Tombaugh had also told the Naval missile director at White Sands Missile Range, Commander Robert McLaughlin, that he had seen a bright flash on Mars on August 27, 1941, which he now attributed to an atomic blast.
Tombaugh also noted that the first atomic bomb tested in New Mexico would have lit up the dark side of the Earth like a neon sign and that Mars was coincidentally quite close at the time, the implication apparently being that the atomic test would have been visible from Mars.
---------------
I have also gone into some detail about the Nuclear war on Mars theory proposed by Dr John Brandenburg. A theory that is backed up by my extensive finds on the Mars surface.

This hypothesis stems from the following observations – the deepest roots of today’s “Tree of Life” constitute heat-loving microbes in hot springs; some Precambrian settings for early life were silica-rich and hydrothermally influenced; and siliceous deposits recently found by Martian rover Spirit are interpreted as hot-spring related.
The problem in trying to peer back into “deep time” on Earth is that the very old rocks which may contain the earliest traces of life also tend to be very “beaten up” by later geological events. It can be difficult to prove both biogenicity and original environmental setting in altered rocks billions of years old. Hence, Kathleen Campbell’s research examines siliceous hot-spring deposits to track the integrity of their fossil preservation through time. This method allows us to follow microbes as they “turn to stone” and to examine their history far back into the geological record, thereby fine-tuning studies on the recognition of early terrestrial life. The research has led to discovery of giant, Yellowstone-style, paleo-geothermal systems in the Late Jurassic (150-million-year-old) of Patagonia, Argentina. It also has confirmed hydrothermal signatures in fossil microbe-rich, 3.33 billion-year-old shallow marine rocks of South Africa.

NASA’s “Curiosity” rover on Mars has found potential evidence of former life on the red planet. The spacecraft has sent data back to Earth indicating large methane spikes, leading some to believe they are close to finding long-awaited Martian life. RT’s Lindsay France details the findings.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. What would it mean for a human to set foot on Mars? Astrophysicist and Mars One Candidate Joseph Roche looks to the near future, and describes the likely experience of the first Martian settlers.
As a candidate for the Mars One mission, astrophysicist at Trinity College Dublin, Joseph Roche, could be one of the first humans to set foot on the Martian landscape.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

STORY: Three years after landing in a giant Martian crater, NASA's Curiosity rover has found what scientists call proof that the basin had repeatedly filled with water, bolstering chances for life on Mars, a study published on Thursday (October 8) showed.

The Martian was an interesting movie and it made me think of the odd similarities (metaphorically and practically speaking)....

Mars Ancient Aliens
In 1969 he received a PhD in Astronomy from Yale, with a dissertation on lunar occultations. Van Flandern worked at the USNO until 1983, first becoming Chief of the Research Branch and later becoming Chief of the Celestial Mechanics Branch of the Nautical Almanac Office.
Mysterious Mars Tom Van Flandern
Dr. Flandern helped us look at Mars a different way. He make us think about the possibility of other answers to the formation of the universe. And of the surface of Mars. Although he has past away, others carry on the work. UFO Media Matters blog highlights photo from Mars of possible surface animals. All photos have been found by Skipper who's tireless research over at the Mars Anomaly Research Center" has produced form the Mars Rovers photos some stunning examples of possible Mars life.

Remote Sensing of Martian Life: Evidence from Mt Haleakala by Dr. Hiromu Nakagawa
