News' Will Marfuggi after becoming the first black woman to win the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. In her powerful acceptance speech, Davis said, "'In my mind I see a line, and over that line, I see green fields and lovely flowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line, but I can't seem to get there no how. I can't seem to get over that line.' That was Harriet Tubman in the 1800s. And let me tell you something, the only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there." She thanked those who work behind the scenes—Paul Lee, Peter Nowalk, Shonda Rhimes and Ben Sherwood—as they all "redefined what it means to be beautiful, to be sexy, to be a leading women, to be black." News, "In my mind I just wanted to give that Harriet Tubman quote and I would have been really good, because for me it says everything. PHOTOS: Stars at the 2015 Emmys As the How to Get Away With Murder actress, 50, took to the stage for her truly inspirational acceptance speech for her Best Actress in a Drama award (a speech which reduced half the audience to tears and earned her a standing ovation), a host of big name celebs jumped right onto social media to make their thoughts known about Davis' important win. "Wow , WOW! Another proud to spell my name W.O.M.A.N. Moment," talk show host Winfrey wrote via Twitter in the moments that followed Davis' speech. "Thank you @violadavis #EmmyWinner." Davis, who plays sexy lawyer Annalise Keating in the hit ABC show, was careful to namecheck a host of actresses who had paved the way for her win, including Kerry Washington, Gabrielle Union and fellow category contestant Taraji P. iola Davis made history at Sunday night's Emmy Awards when she became the first black woman to take home the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series trophy. Her acceptance speech, which touched upon the lack of opportunity for women of color, was poignant, emotional and empowering. So it's a serious wonder why "General Hospital" actress Nancy Lee Grahn used that moment to criticize Davis. "Im a f**king actress for 40 yrs. None of us get respect or opportunity we deserve. Emmys not venue 4 racial opportunity. ALL women belittled," she wrote in a since-deleted tweet captured by BuzzFeed. She also took issue with Davis quoting Harriet Tubman ("In my dreams, I see a line. Over that line, I see green fields and lovely flowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line, but I can't seem to get there no how, I can't seem to get over that line"). After receiving backlash for her comments, Grahn attempted to apologize and respond to her critics. She wrote a lengthier response in an extended tweet: I apologize for my earlier tweets and now realize I need to check my own privilege. My intention was not to take this historic and important moment from Viola Davis or other women of color but I realize that my intention doesn't matter here because that is what I ended up doing. I learned a lot tonight and I admit that there are still some things I don't understand but I am trying to and will let this be a learning experience for me.
