Kashmir (Kashmiri: كشهير kaśhīr, Urdu, Shina: کشمیر kaśmīr, कश्मीर, Hindi) is a geographical region in the north-west of the Indian subcontinent. Until the mid-19th century, the term Kashmir geographically denoted only the valley between the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal mountain range. Today, it denotes a larger area that includes the Indian administered territories of Jammu and Kashmir (which consists of Jammu, the Kashmir Valley, and Ladakh), the Pakistan administered territories of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit–Baltistan, and the Chinese-administered regions of Aksai Chin and the Trans-Karakoram Tract.
Although Jammu is part of the disputed Kashmir region, it is not geographically part of the Kashmir valley nor the Ladakh region. The Jammu Division is inhabited by the Dogra people who are historically, culturally, linguistically, and geographically connected with the Punjab region and the Pahari regions of the former Punjab Hills States that now comprise the state of Himachal Pradesh.

The Indo-Pakistani War of 1947, sometimes known as the First Kashmir War, was fought between India and Pakistan over the region of Kashmir from 1947 to 1948. It was the first of four wars fought between the two newly independent nations. The result of the war still affects the geopolitics of both the countries. Before and after the withdrawal of the British from India in 1947, the princely state of Kashmir and Jammu came under pressure from both India and Pakistan to agree to become part of one of the newly independent countries. According to the instruments of accession relating to the Partition of India, the rulers of princely states were to be given the choice of either acceding to India or Pakistan, or remaining independent. After the Independence of Pakistan, 1947, the first war arose over Kashmir. Pakistan's eyes are set on Kashmir due to two-nation theory, Kashmir regarding being Muslim majority, a state which was supposed to accede to Pakistan. Unfortunately, Kashmir was being ruled by barbaric oppressive curropt dogra dynasty led by Maharja Hari singh, who was placed under tremendous pressure from Indian government to accede to India. The Founder of Pakistan , Mohammad Ali Jinnah declared this war authorised military action. Both Pakistan Army and Tribal Warlords promised to seize it for Pakistan. Due to Pakistan Military victory capturing half Kashmir, India referred the dispute to the United Nations on 1 January. In a resolution dated August 13, 1948, the UN asked Pakistan to remove its troops, afte...

Comprising a region north of the Ganges flood plains, to the east of Nepal, over the foothills and high mountain passes all the way to the former Buddhist kingdom of Ladakh and the fabled earthly paradise Kashmir, the Himalayas represents the least populated and arguably most beautiful region of all India. So, what are the main highlights? Well, heading out of Delhi the first place you'll probably come to is Shilma, former summer capital to the British Raj echoing the history of that era, before moving on to Dharamsala, the home of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetans in Exile. Close to here there are some wonderful walking trips to do staying with local villages...

The Indian army observes Teetwal Day in northern Jammu and Kashmir state to mark the country's victory over Pakistan in their first war in 1948.
Hindi/English/Nat India extended a deadline on Friday giving Pakistani fighters an extra day to withdraw from Indian held northern Kashmir. Meanwhile, Pakistan admitted for the first time that its troops had crossed into Indian territory during a bloody two-month conflict over the Himalayan region. The admission came even as Islamic fighters continued their withdrawal from the Himalayan peaks that have seen the worse fighting between India and Pakistan since their 1971 war. India claims to have recaptured nearly all the positions it had lost to the enemy. The guns may have fallen silent but the Indian Air force has not. Indian war planes are continuing their reconnaissance missions to monitor the withdrawal of Islamic guerillas and alleged Pakistani army regulars from t...
Eng/Hindi/Nat India says commandoes have stormed a building at an Indian military camp in Kashmir where Islamic militants were holding twelve hostages, freeing all the hostages. The militants attacked the camp on Tuesday, killing three soldiers and a civilian - the first attack on a base of India's Border Security Force in ten years of militancy in the region. The incident came as forces backed by Pakistan appeared to be continuing to withdraw from the Indian side of the line of control. India says it will only consider resuming peace talks with Pakistan after the last intruder has left Indian territory. The militant attack on one of its key bases in Kashmir shocked India, but the nation is now treating its freeing of the hostages as a national victory. A small number of...
Pakistan has a tendency to rant the Kashmir issue here and there. But with the decisive Modi government India is all set to act offensively and asking Pakistan to vacate POK and hand it over to India. Azad Jammu and Kashmir abbreviated as AJK or Azad Kashmir ("free Kashmir"), is an autonomous administrative territory of Pakistan. The territory lies west of the Indian-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir, and was previously part of the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, which ceased to exist as a result of the first Kashmir war fought between India and Pakistan in 1947. Azad Kashmir is part of the greater Kashmir region, which is the subject of a long-running conflict between India and Pakistan. The territory shares a border with Gilgit–Baltistan, together with which it is ref...

Though other regional conflicts may capture more headlines, none reaches as deeply into the past nor haunts the present as ominously as Kashmir. The region, divided between India and Pakistan in 1947, is today perhaps the most militarized place in the world. At this Open Society Institute event, four panelists discuss the remote origins of the Kashmir conflict, as well as its longterm consequences, including its incalculable human costs, its effects on Indian and Pakistan polities, the American role in the dispute, and the prospects for a resolution. In addition, they will trace the tentacles from Kashmir that have extended to other regional conflicts, from the mountains of Afghanistan to the streets of Mumbai. 22/11/11 The former Princely State of Jammu and Kashmir, is seen by many as South Asia's Palestinian counterpart. Bordered by Pakistan, India, China and Afghanistan, each country has laid claim to the territory that lies in the foothills of the Himalayas. It has been caught between continuous contestation of borders and autonomy since the partition of British India. With India unwilling to acknowledge the demands of the people for freedom, and therefore avoiding debate on resolution, Kashmir's future looks like it will remain in limbo for years to come. But with the recent Jan Lokpal protests and the Arab Spring, will India take note and give the people of Kashmir the right to self autonomy? Or will it continue to arm itself with Israeli weapons and training in the name of counter-terro...
