The British Raj - Hindi Documentary Rare Hindi Video The British Raj rāj, meaning "rule" in Hindi was the rule of Great Britain in the Indian subcontinent between 1858 and 1947. The term can also refer to the period of dominion. The region under British control—commonly called India—included areas directly administered by Britain as well as the princely states ruled by individual rulers under the paramountcy of the British Crown. The region is now less commonly also called British India or the Indian Empire. The Empire of India was officially created by Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli for Queen Victoria in 1876. As India, it was a founding member of the League of Nations, a participating nation in the Summer Olympics in 1900, 1920, 1928, 1932, and 1936, and a founding member of the United Nations in San Francisco in 1945.

A shoe box full of 178 photographs capturing how life was in British ruled India has been discovered in the archives of Scotland's national collections. The glass-plate photos were found inside a size-nine shoe box by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland. The negatives, believed to be dated back to 1912 were found in a fragile condition.
