With an estimated death toll of 273,400 casualties, the Haiyuan Earthquake occurred on December 1st with a reported Richter magnitude scale of 7.8. This earthquake brought 7 entire Chinese provinces and regions to its feet as it caused nearly all houses and buildings to collapse. Residual waves from the Haiyuan Earthquake were observed as far as Norway in 2 lakes and 3 fjords.
4. 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami
At just after midnight on the day after Christmas, an undersea megathrust earthquake occurred just off the west coast of Sumatra. This triggered a series of devastating tsunamis along the coast of 14 different countries with waves up to 30 m (100 ft) high. These tsunamis were responsible for 280,000 deaths, while the earthquake caused the entire planet to vibrate as much as 1 cm while triggering other earthquakes as far away as Alaska.
3. 1970 Bhola Cyclone
On November 12th , the deadliest tropical cyclone ever recorded struck East Pakistan--or known today as Bangladesh--with a death toll of half a million people. Its peak winds blew up to 185 km/h (115 mph) while wiping out entire villages and destroying many offshore islands. The Bhola Cyclone was responsible for killing 45% of the 167,000-person population of Tazumuddin.
2. 1976 Tangshan Earthquake
The Great Tangshan Earthquake occurred on July 28th in Tangshan, and industrial city with approximately 1 million inhabitants. The tremors from these seismic waves--which lasted 14 to 16 seconds--came in with a magnitude of 7.8. Sixteen hours later, another 7.1 magnitude aftershock occurred, which was responsible for 255,000 of 655,000 total deaths. Also, an additional 164,000 people were reported as severely injured.
1. 1931 China Floods
The Central China Floods of 1931 was the deadliest natural disaster ever recorded in the 20th century with up to 4,000,000 deaths. These floods occurred from the months of July through November, when heavy rains and spring thaw from a heavy snowstorm the preceding winter--along with heavy cyclone activity--caused the Yellow River, Yangtze River, and Huai River to flood. Not only did millions die from downing, but waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhus were also widespread. In some cases, infanticide and cannibalism were even reported during these times of despair.

10. Nevado del Ruiz Volcano Eruption 1985
This 1985 eruption is regarded as the second worst of its kind in the 20th century. It’s also known as La Mesa de Herveo and it took 25,000 lives. The sheer scale of the eruption is phenomenal, releasing over 35 million tonnes of material. In comparison, the eruption from Mount St. Helens in 1980 only released approximately 3% of the material released from Nevado del Ruiz.
9. Cyclone Nargis 2008
Official figures show that Cyclone Nargis took the lives of 84,500 people when it made landfall in 2008. Areas affected by this cyclone include India, Bangladesh, Yangon, Sri Lanka and Myanmar.
8. Tangshan Earthquake 1976
China experienced the worst earthquake of the 20th century when it was struck in 1976. Ultimately, over 240,000 lives were lost and an estimated 164,000 were injured.
7. Haiti Earthquake 2010
On January 12th, 2010, Haiti was rocked by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake. This was the worst earthquake Haiti had seen
since 1770 and over 200,000 people lost their lives as a result of its devastation.
6. Aleppo Earthquake 1138
Although it occurred nearly nine-hundreds of years ago, the Aleppo Earthquake in Syria is still regarded as the worst in history. It caused 230,000 deaths and completely wiped out what is now Habab, on October 11, 1138.
5. Haiyuan Earthquake 1920
Over 240,000 died after this 1920 earthquake in China. This horrific earthquake is also referred to as the Gansu earthquake and is the 4th worst recorded earthquake ever.
4. Indian Ocean Earthquake 2004
Although it lasted only 10 seconds, a 9.15 magnitude earthquake caused unimaginable tragedy on December 26th, 2004. Between 200,000-300,000 thousand people from countries including Sri Lanka and Thailand were killed as a result of the tsunami this quake caused.
3. Antioch Earthquake 526
In the year 526, between 250,000-300,000 people in Antioch and Syria were killed from this earthquake. It is considered to be the third worst earthquake in world history.
2. Bhola Cyclone 1970
Bangladesh experienced a cyclone so powerful in 1970 that it wiped out entire villages. Winds reached 185 km/h and about 500,000 died as a result.
1. Yangtze River Flood 1931

Song for a Cause ~ George Harrison "Bangla Desh"
"Bangla Desh" is a song by English musician George Harrison. It was released as a non-album single in July 1971, to raise awareness for the millions of refugees from the country formerly known as East Pakistan, following the 1970 Bhola cyclone and the outbreak of the Bangladesh Liberation War. Harrison's inspiration for the song came from his friend Ravi Shankar, a Bengali Hindu, who approached Harrison for help in trying to alleviate the suffering. "Bangla Desh" has been described as "one of the most cogent social statements in music history"[1] and helped gain international support for Bangladeshi independence by establishing the name of the fledgling nation around the world. In 2005, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan identified the song's success in personalising the Bangladesh crisis, through its emotive description of Shankar's request for help.
"Bangla Desh" appeared at the height of Harrison's popularity as a solo artist, following the break-up of the Beatles and the acclaim afforded his 1970 triple album All Things Must Pass. It was pop music's first charity single, and its release took place three days before the Harrison-sponsored Concert for Bangladesh shows at New York's Madison Square Garden. The single became a top ten hit in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe, and peaked at number 23 on America's Billboard Hot 100. The recording was co-produced by Phil Spector and features contributions from Leon Russell, Jim Horn, Ringo Starr and Jim Keltner. The Los Angeles session for the song marked the start of two enduring musical associations in Harrison's solo career, with Keltner and Horn.
Backed by these musicians and others including Eric Clapton and Billy Preston, Harrison performed "Bangla Desh" at the UNICEF concerts, on 1 August 1971, as a rousing encore. In a review of the Concert for Bangladesh live album for Rolling Stone magazine, Jon Landau identified this reading as "the concert's single greatest performance by all concerned".[2] The studio recording appeared on the 1976 compilation The Best of George Harrison, which remained its only official CD release until September 2014, when it was included as a bonus track on the Apple Years 1968–75 reissue of Harrison's Living in the Material World album. Artists who have covered the song include Stu Phillips & the Hollyridge Strings and Italian saxophonist Fausto Papetti.
