Hundreds of supporters of the religious Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) party marched through the streets of Karachi on Thursday to observe "Kashmir Day". Protesters held banners and chanted slogans against India as they marched to show their solidarity with the residents of Indian-administered Kashmir, a disputed territory between Pakistan and India. Among those addressing the rally was Syed Salahuddin, chief of Kashmiri separatist group, Hizbul Mujahideen, who called on Pakistan's leadership to "raise the issue of Kashmir on the international forum with courage". "Inform the world of the struggle of unarmed Kashmiri people and highlight Indian atrocities," he said. Protesters burnt the flags of India, France and the US during Thursday's demonstration. The disputed Kashmir region has been a source of sharp tension between Pakistan and India since they both became independent in 1947. Two of the three wars they have fought have been about Kashmir, a region they both claim. Tensions spiked in late December and early January with both sides accusing the other of firing across the de-facto border that separates the two sides of Kashmir. India has long accused Pakistan of fomenting conflict by arming and training anti-India militants in Kashmir. Islamabad says it only provides them moral and diplomatic support.
