Adam Pearson is on a mission to explore disability hate crime - to find out why it goes under-reported, under-recorded and under people's radar. In this documentary, Adam challenges people into questioning their attitudes towards disability and disfigurement, to uncover the roots of the issue.
Adam has neurofibromatosis type 1, a condition that causes benign tumours to grow on nerve endings - in his case, on his face. He is disfigured and disabled and has experienced disability hate crime first-hand, like a number of his friends, some of whom he meets with in the film. Their stories may differ, but their disability as the motivating factor is constant.
Just days into his investigation, Adam becomes the target of some grossly offensive online hate speech. While this isn't unusual for him, for the first time Adam decides to take action, reporting it to the police - with some unexpected outcomes.
Undeterred, he looks to understand the laws specific to disability hate crime, and finds that a mixture of ignorance and inequalities mean that these crimes often don't make it to our courts, or are sentenced less severely than other hate crimes when they do.
Adam looks to uncover what attitudes and influences may be causing people to commit disability hate crime in the first place, questioning whether the portrayal of disfigurement and disability in the media, for example, could be leading us to associate them with being 'the bad guys'.
With help from Miles Hewstone, professor of social psychology at the University of Oxford, Adam conducts an experiment measuring peoples' innate prejudice towards disfigurement that gives some shocking results, and leads him to question if he alone can hope to affect a change - and if so, how?

She wears designer dresses, dons Louboutins, and dates men all over New York City, documenting her life every step of the way. What starts out as a story analogous to that of a Sex & the City character quickly elevates in its complexity - what would have happened if Carrie Bradshaw had also been disabled? In this TEDx Dr. Danielle Sheypuk gets real about sex and disability, unabashedly exploring sexual satisfaction writ large. She encourages curiosity and invites you to shed your preconceived notions of sexual norms in favor of a new reality that just might pique your interest.
Wheelchair-dependent since childhood, psychologist Dr. Danielle Sheypuk once described her NYC dating and relationship experiences as “Sex and the City, disability style.” After snagging the title “Ms. Wheelchair NY 2012,” Sheypuk found herself in demand from a variety of media focused on her particular area of expertise – the psychology of dating, relationships and sexuality among the disabled community. Her "walk" down the runway as a model during the February 2014 New York Fashion Week has been deemed by some as a "Rosa Parks moment" on behalf of women living with disabilities.

Whether someone’s disabled or not, if you’re invited back for 'coffee' you're probably not going to get much sleep. So let’s hope you’ve got your best undies on.
C is for 'Coffee' is part of Scope’s A-Z of sex and disability.
About the campaign:
Scope research shows that just 5% of non-people have ever asked out, or been on a date with, a disabled person. So this October, we're celebrating dark, drawn-in nights and long lie-ins under the covers with our vibrant and racy, illustrated A to Z of sex and disability.
http://www.scope.org.uk/a-z
The A-Z is the lastest offering from Scope's #EndTheAwkward campaign which aims to change attitudes to disability by shining a light-hearted spotlight on the awkwardness people feel around disability. Scope hopes the campaign will help people feel comfortable when talking to – or dating – a disabled person.
http://www.scope.org.uk/awkward
About Scope:
Scope exists to make this country a place where disabled people have the same opportunities as everyone else. Until then, we'll be here. We provide support, information and advice to more than a quarter of a million disabled people and their families every year. We raise awareness of the issues that matter. And with your support, we'll keep driving change across society until this country is great for everyone.

‘Windows to Our World’ is a series of videos featuring the personal stories of parents with children who have disabilities. The parents in ‘Windows To Our World’ share their experiences about what happened when their child was born, when they had concerns in the early years, their experiences with health and medical professionals, with education and therapy providers. They speak about their grief, their hopes and optimism, and their aspirations for their children.
Families who have a lived experience with disability very often gain great support and strength from other families in the same situation. They have shared their stories so that other parents know they are not alone.
The ‘Windows to Our World’ project was facilitated by Development Disability WA with support from Therapy Focus, Early Childhood Intervention Australia and School for Parents (based at Carson Street School). The project was funded by Disability Services Commission.

Barbara Arrowsmith-Young was born with severe learning disabilities. As a child, she read and wrote everything backward, struggled to comprehend language, and was continually getting lost. But by relying on her formidable memory, she made her way to graduate school, where she chanced upon research that inspired her to invent cognitive exercises to “fix” her own brain. The Woman Who Changed Her Brain interweaves her personal tale with riveting case histories from more than thirty years of her work with both children and adults. People with learning disorders have long been told that such difficulties are a lifelong condition. In clear and lucid writing, The Woman Who Changed Her Brain refutes that message, demonstrating with fascinating anecdotes that anyone with a learning disability can be radically transformed: Arrowsmith-Young is a living example. She founded the Arrowsmith School in Toronto in 1980 and then the Arrowsmith Program to train teachers to implement this effective methodology in schools all over North America. This remarkable book by a brilliant pioneer deepens our understanding of how the brain works. Our brain shapes us, and this book offers clear and hopeful evidence of the corollary: that we can shape our brains.

Catalina Devandas Aguilar, UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, emphasized that, since the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, there is a growing recognition of the rights of persons with disabilities and greater engagement by governments to deal with disability issues in a systematic manner. The challenge now is how to translate this into concrete change in the quality of life of persons with disability.
All relevant actors (including international organizations, governments, UN agencies and DPOs) should agree on a coordinated agenda for the implementation both of the CRPD and the 2030 Agenda - which should reinforce each other.

What does the future mean for people with disabilities? Learn about the Past, Present, and Future of the Chromosapien in this chronological education presentation.
Celeste Adams is a senior at Greenhills School and is a first-year participant in TEDxYouth@AnnArbor. Since being bound to a wheelchair at age seven, she has been particularly active in disability rights, along with gender equality, and efforts to stop elephant poaching throughout Africa. Before going straight to college, Celeste plans to take a gap year in which she hopes to travel, work on her portfolio, and collaborate with artists in many different fields. In her free time, Celeste can be found drawing and reading with her cat, attending reviews at the Taubman School of Architecture, or downtown enjoying a coffee in the sun with friends.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Kalki Koechlin recently played 'Laila' in the film 'Margarita with a Straw'. Laila is a young middle-class Indian girl with Cerebral Palsy, but this is a story that shows you never before insights into the identity and sexuality of a girl living with a disability. And there are so many such Lailas amongst us in India. Take Deepa Narasimhan, for example. She has a condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy which has left her with severely restricted mobility. Yet, with the aid of computers and her motorised wheelchair Deepa is a successful working professional who travels the world. Yes, amazing!
So, how about if I showed you Deepa's life? What if I got Kalki talking about playing the role of a girl with Cerebral Palsy and living in a wheel chair for a few days? What if these two young women - the same age - asked each other questions? What if I changed the way you look at people with disabilities? What if I shared with you whether today's youth are willing to date people with disabilities? Yes, I do all of this and more in the first episode of The Lakshmi Rebecca Show.
This is a never-before candid conversation between an abled star and a differently abled heroine. Watch it and it will either inspire you or hit you like a bolt. And when you are done watching this, leave a comment and tell me what you thought of it, tell me what else you would have liked to hear and share it for a reason that you believe in.

The purpose of this training is to provide emergency planners with information and best practices that will ensure the safety of people with disabilities during emergency events. Special consideration will be given to the importance of including people with disabilities and disability organizations in the planning process.
People with disabilities may have functional needs that will require accommodations during and after emergency response. In your role as emergency planner, you make plans to meet the functional needs of a wide variety of people in case of an emergency. One of those groups of people, people with disabilities, constitutes a large portion of the general population. In fact, roughly one in five Americans has some kind of disability. With careful and inclusive planning and coordination of agencies, the functional needs of people with disabilities can be successfully met during emergency, disaster, and sheltering situations.
This training is divided into five sections:
1. Introduction to Disability
2. Communication and Notification
3. Evacuation and Transportation
4. Sheltering and Recovery
5. Inclusive Planning for Disaster Mitigation and Response
Training Aids:
Additional disability resources for emergency planners, including a list of statewide and regional disability organizations, can be found at: www.go.osu.edu/emergencyplanners.
