Doritos (play /dɵˈriːtoʊz/) is a brand of seasoned tortilla chips created by
Arch West and produced since 1964 by the
American food company Frito-Lay (a division of
PepsiCo, Inc.).
"Doritos" were released in the
United States in 1964, the first tortilla chip to be launched nationally. The word "dorito" sounds similar to "doradito," which means "little golden" in
Spanish.
According to
Information Resources International, in
1993, Doritos earned $1.3 billion in retail sales, one-third of the total Frito-Lay sales for the year. This made the chip the leading seller in the snack category, which also comprises cookies, crackers, cakes, and candies.
Nevertheless, in the costliest redesign in Frito-Lay history, in
1994 the company spent $50 million to redesign Doritos to make the chips 20% larger and 15% thinner.
Roger J. Berdusco, the vice president of tortilla chip marketing, said a primary reason for the change was "greater competition from restaurant-style tortilla chips, that are larger and more strongly seasoned". The design change was the result of a two-year market research study that involved 5,
000 chip eaters.
The new design gave each chip rounded corners, making it easier to eat and reducing the scrap resulting from broken corners. Each chip was also given more seasoning, resulting in a stronger flavor. The improved chips were released in four flavors beginning in
January 1995.
A contest is an event in which at least two teams or individuals compete. There may be an award to a winner or awards for multiple top performers, but a contest may be imposed for training. A contest may occur naturally, or be planned by the participants, rather than organized by another party.
A television advertisement or television commercial, often just commercial, advert, ad, or ad-film (
India) -- is a span of television programming produced and paid for by an organization that conveys a message, typically one intended to market a product. Advertisement revenue provides a significant portion of the funding for most privately owned television networks. The vast majority of television advertisements today consist of brief advertising spots, ranging in length from a few seconds to several minutes (as well as program-length infomercials). Advertisements of this sort have been used to promote a wide variety of goods, services and ideas since the dawn of television.
The effect upon the viewing public of commercial advertisements, and mass media in general, has been the subject of philosophical discourse by such luminaries as
Marshall McLuhan. The viewership of television programming, as measured by companies such as
Nielsen Media Research, is often used as a metric for television advertisement placement, and consequently, for the rates charged to advertisers to air within a given network, television program, or time of day (called a "daypart").
In many countries, including the United States, television campaign advertisements are considered indispensable for a political campaign. In other countries, such as
France, political advertising in television is heavily restricted, and some, like
Norway, completely ban it.
The Super Bowl is the championship game of the
National Football League (
NFL), the highest level of professional
American football in the United States, culminating a season that begins in the late summer of the previous calendar year. The Super Bowl uses
Roman numerals to identify each game, rather than the year in which it is held. For example,
Super Bowl I was played on
January 15,
1967, following the regular season played in 1966, while
Super Bowl XLV was played on
February 6,
2011, to determine the champion of the 2010 regular season.[1]
The game was created as part of a merger agreement between the NFL and its then-rival league, the
American Football League (
AFL). It was agreed that the two leagues' champion teams would play in an AFL--NFL
World Championship Game until the merger was to officially begin in
1970. After the merger, each league was redesignated as a "conference", and the game was then played between the conference champions.
