Dili (Portuguese: Díli) is the capital, largest city, chief port and commercial centre of East Timor.
Dili lies on the northern coast of Timor island, the easternmost of the Lesser Sunda Islands. It is the seat of the administration of the district of Dili, which is the administrative entity of the area and includes the island of Atauro and some cities close to Dili city. The city is divided into the subdistricts of Nain Feto, Vera Cruz, Dom Aleixo and Cristo Rei and is divided into several sucos, which are headed by an elected chefe de suco. 18 of the 26 sucos of the four subdistricts are categorised as urban.
There is no city administration beside the district administrator, who was appointed by state government. The East Timorese government started to plan in 2009 to change the status of districts into municipalities. These will have an elected mayor and council.
The 2010 census recorded a population of 193,563 in the areas of Dili district classified as urban, with a population of 234,331 in the whole district including rural areas such as Atauro and Metinaro.

East Timor (i/ˌiːst ˈtiːmɔːr/) or Timor-Leste (/tiˈmɔːr ˈlɛʃteɪ/), Tetum: Timór Lorosa'e, officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (Portuguese: República Democrática de Timor-Leste, Tetum: Repúblika Demokrátika Timór-Leste), is a sovereign state in Maritime Southeast Asia. It comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecusse, an exclave on the northwestern side of the island, within Indonesian West Timor. The country's size is about 15,410 km2 (5,400 sq mi).
East Timor was colonised by Portugal in the 16th century, and was known as Portuguese Timor until November 1975, when the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN) declared the territory's independence. Nine days later, it was invaded and occupied by Indonesia and was declared Indonesia's 27th province the following year. The Indonesian occupation of East Timor was characterised by a highly violent decades-long conflict between separatist groups (especially FRETILIN) and the Indonesian military.

The capital city of Asia's newest nation,Timor Leste is Dili. Dili is a coastal town with a welcoming and friendly village atmosphere and an almost mediterranean flavour. With many things to do and see in Dili, travellers should schedule a good few days to explore. www.EastTimorNow.com Producer/Presenter: Caroline Pemberton (www.carolinepemberton.com t:@CarolinePem) Camera/Editor: Morgan Touvron (www.lightscamerasold.com.au)
East Timor is home to Dili, one of a few cities where coral reefs are just steps from the city center...and where traces of a Portuguese colony remain amidst the vibrant Asia-Pacific ethnic culture.
This area, that not many tourists actually know about, just at the western outskirts of DIli comprises 3 small picturesque lakes surrounded by mountains withing 1 km from the sea. During the rainy season they become more like 1 big lake (rather shallow though) with water coming close to people's houses especially after abundant rains. The area is famous for numerous birds, migratory and indigenous, staying there all year round, living in peace, because local people don't touch them. The mountains around them are topped by several cult monuments which are an object of pilgrimage in days of religious holidays. The white traditional style chapel just at the main road is a quite famous religious sightseeing as well, but very few people would advance further into the local Tasitolu neighborhoo...

After a long flight from Amsterdam, Mom arrived in Thailand. We went to Ayutthaya to see the ruins of the old city, which is located an hour above Bangkok. Next, we took the nighttrain from Ayutthaya to Chiang Mai for a jungle tour. During this day we went to the elephants in the Mae Tang area, in order to feed en bath them. After that we did the whitewater rafting, which (unfortunately) is not on video. The visit to the Karen Longneck Hilltribe was breathtaking, in several ways..

Cristo Rei of Dili (Christ the King of Dili) is an 88.6-foot-high (27.0 m) statue of Jesus located atop a globe in Dili, East Timor. The statue was designed by Mochamad Syailillah, who is better known as Bolil. The statue was officially unveiled by Suharto in 1996 as gift from the Indonesian government to the people of East Timor, which was at the time still a province. The statue is one of the main tourist attractions in East Timor.
